I live right down the road from this place so obviously I have tried it a few times. Each time it was literally the worst customer service I've ever experienced. The food is also very mediocre. I wanted to like it, I really did but I felt super uncomfortable each time I was there, as if I was inconveniencing the staff. The kitchen staff seems professional but the front of house waitresses( a couple in particular) are always super rude and lack people skills. Perhaps the hiring managers could have higher criteria for personality types of who they hire. read more

I agree with a prior review about the chips and salsa. It all tasted store bought. For what you pay I could have gotten a whole bag and a bottle of salsa. I did have the burrito and it was good. This little place is a hidden gem. It's off the beaten path but the food is simply delicious! We stopped for a late lunch and ate on the back patio. The special sandwich was a grilled cheese with jerk chicken, avocado and bacon. Awesome! The sweet chili lime shrimp quesadilla was the best I've ever eaten. After a long hiatus came back to give B40 another try. Food was good, service was good. Very friendly and helpful. Burritos are huge. Taste was decent, not bad, not mind blowing. Lots of places to sit, art on the wall for purchase if you're into that. Lots of law enforcement coming in for lunch so it must meet their requirements, whatever that is. Really good. When we first pulled up it looked a little sketchy, but it's the complete opposite! So inviting on the inside. My family ordered the nacho's for an appetizer it was amazing, but for a family of 7 we should've ordered 2. I ordered the jerk chicken Caesar wrap and it was amazing. You get the choice to add a side, I chose rice and beans - I was not impressed with the side and did not finish it - the chips were better. WLS Review! The place is out of the way and in a residential area which was weird at first but once you sit down it was a great atmosphere. They also have outdoor seating. We got soup of the day which was buffalo chicken and blue cheese which was fantastic. We shared an appetizer and got the Jerk chicken and pineapple Quesadilla. It was fantastic. The spice of the chicken was complimented perfectly with the sweet of the pineapple. Was only able to eat one quarter of the meal due to having the soup before hand. The waitress was wonderful and super helpful and they did not mind us splitting the meal. Did not even need to explain ourselves. That is always a positive. We stopped here to have a late lunch and kill some time before our rental check in. We weren't sure what to expect as the place looks like it might be a divey bar from the outside. Wow, we were pleasantly surprised. Our server was excellent, super friendly, and helpful when we had questions about the menu. Went in with four adults, a three year old, and a one year old, and the vibe was very relaxed, and definitely family friendly. The server pushed some tables together to fit us all in. All the adults in our group got tacos. The jerk chicken, steak, shrimp, and pork chimichurri tacos were all awesome. Only two on the plate, but they were over stuffed with goodies. Sides were generously portioned as well. The chimichurri sauce was tasty, and the salsa was a great blend of sweet followed with a spicy kick. My cousin and I both tried a local IPA that went well with the tacos. All in all this is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat while on the way into St. Augustine. What a disappointment! Went to this restaurant today with my wife and daughter. I ordered a hamburger (one of their signature dishes) and was pretty shocked when it arrived. What I got was a slice of meat loaf in some kind of house made flat bread. The meat definitely had bread or cracker filler inside as it had that mealy taste and it had been microwaved to warm it up. I tried to order it with a slice a raw onion and the server told me that they don't have onion in the place (huh??). It came with some mediocre potato salad, similar to what you can buy at a Publix. I don't understand the other ratings for this restaurant, as I think I can get a better burger at Five Guys. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. Service was OK but the food....meh. read more

Tiny house-like, casual place just a bit off the path. Took family of 4. Chicken nachos to start were on point. Only complaint on the main dishes was the amount of red onions in the quesadillas (neither kid likes onions so make sure to ask for it without onions if you are the same). I heard about The Back 40 Urban Cafe after they re-opened under new management. This place is only known by the locals and is truly a hidden gem. Tourists often frequent the downtown restaurants only because they are visiting for a short period of time. The Back 40 has a very cozy atmosphere just like most places in the area. We chose to sit outside during our lunch. I was enjoying the nice 62 degree weather while the locals were all bundled up. It is quite a site! After looking at the menu and seeing food come out as people ordered I knew I was in for a good meal. I ordered the 'wet burrito' and man it was enormous! Everything here is extremely underpriced. My burrito was $9. Way more filling and tasty than anything you would find at Chipotle. After we finished our meal, the owner came back to check in. Everything was amazing and he even mentioned being a Patriots fan. I mean this is a win win! The food was so good we went back again a few days later. read more

Our first visit and we were very impressed. Very casual restaurant, an awesome staff, very pleasant servers and delicious food. We were in St Aug on a rainy Columbus Day and found a lot of restaurants weren't open for lunch. The Back 40 Urban Cafe was high on the list of lunch spots on Yelp so we gave it a try. I thought the GPS was giving me some weird directions as this old house is located in a residential/not so desirable area. Someone had fun decorating this place, using lots of bright island colors. Most of the artwork is local and for sale. They offer Tex-Mex and Caribbean foods. Only two other tables were occupied when we arrived so we basically had one room all to ourselves. This was perfect since my Orlando friend was spending the day with us. I had a jerk chicken/pineapple quesadilla that was served with a tasty salsa. The jerk chicken was a bit bland but the salsa gave it some much needed kick. My son and friend liked their tacos (buffalo chicken and shrimp I believe) but felt the rice/beans were bland and dry. We tried the brownie cheesecake and mud pie for dessert. Very good, especially the mud pie! We asked the waitress if we could just chill since it wasn't busy and she was great to check on us, refill drinks occasionally. Great little lunch spot! The Friday before Memorial Day weekend, Adam got his wisdom teeth taken out. All 4 of 'em. 3 were impacted. We spent all of Friday relaxing on the couch while he enjoyed his meds and drooled in his pudding. The next day, he bounded out of bed looking for something to conquer after being cooped up for an entire day. There's really no other way to describe his desires to get.out.of.the.house.asap. He was like a new man... he just couldn't drink from a straw. I'd been dying to check out a restaurant in St. Augustine so we jumped in the car and headed that direction. On the way down, he pulled up their menu and realized he couldn't actually eat anything on their menu. He's not a picky eater, but the problem with wisdom teeth, or the lack of wisdom teeth, is chewing is a b#@$%. Dang it. So since we were almost to St. Augustine, I told him just to pick some place and QUICK. Oy. What WAS I thinking? He found a place scary quick using Urbanspoon. It was called Back 40 Urban Cafe. Uh.. what? Me: "Honey.. babe.. maybe it's your meds.. you want to go to an Urban Cafe"? Him: "100% of the people like it on UrbanSpoon" Me: "So... the owner, his wife, his girlfriend, and his relatives all clicked 'like'. Big woop" Him: "Uh.. so he has 280 relatives because that's how many reviews they have, and it's still at 100%" Me: [internal voice] Crap... we're really going to have to go to this place... So we navigated away from downtown and even farther away from the beach which was where I wanted to go..[major pouting going on here while I drive]. We turn down some side street into houses and drive past this. Yes, we drove past because I was panicking. "That's where you want to go??? What? That little shack??" (Ok seriously, I was being a butthead, because it's totally cute in the picture.. but let's continue...) Adam stuck to his guns (as he SHOULD). I swung the car around, and we headed back to the "urban cafe". (From the other direction it seemed more inviting. Maybe it was the big parking lot on the one side..) I pulled around back. Gave myself a mental pep talk, turned off the car, stepped out...and was surprised.. it actually looked...cute? I may have been swayed by the cute menu board stating $2 tacos and Coronas.. Then we walked inside. Immediately I saw the cutest 3 chair bar. It instantly reminded me of a cute restaurant/bar in a house I used to enjoy back when I lived in Indianapolis for that hot second. (It kills me I cannot remember the name of this place!) Such a cozy feel. I could see Adam and me and maybe a friend just relaxing there. We took a quick scan of a few of the rooms and picked the middle one because it was empty. All the rooms are different colors with different paintings on the walls. This is the part when my day got flipped-turned upside down and all delicious. $2 Corona? Yes, please. We scanned the menu. They were offering a specialty menu for the holiday which meant I couldn't try the Pineapple Jerk Chicken Quesadilla Adam had read from Yelp & Urbanspon. Aww shucks. We have to come back again? Twist my arm. Then the delicioiusness happened. Adam having not really eaten anything but mashed potatoes, smoothies-in-a-bowl, and mac n cheese for the past day of COURSE ordered the Wet Burrito. It seriously was huge. I went with the Island Bowl which was avocado (you can also get jerk chicken) over a bowl of black beans and brown rice with shredded cheese and tomatoes topped with a dollop of sour cream, green onions, cilantro and jalapenos served with a side of fresh house salsa. It was like all my favorite things all in one. We were starving when we showed up and The Back 40 Urban Cafe did not disappoint. True, I had to get over my fears of going somewhere "off the beaten path," but I survived, left stuffed, AND found a cute little place we'll definitely visit again and again.. especially so we can try the Jerk Chicken Quesadillas! read more

Specially for those looking for vegan or vegetarian options. We were there waiting for the place to open at 11:00am. Service was spot on. Cute place. Lots of quirky charm. I ordered the black bean hummus. It was good and well presented. I liked the dusting of spices on the pita bread and the cut carrots and celery added a nice cool crunchy contrast. Now is it better than regular hummus? I don't think so, but I liked it was different and I did enjoy it. The kids ordered the Cubans and indeed, these may be some of the best cuban sandwiches around. Black beans and rice on the side were good. I think the chips and salsa on the side not as much, as a side. I ordered the red pepper and avocado tacos. Wife ordered the wet burrito with avocado, no sour cream. I forgot to mention the vegan option on the tacos, but there was very little shredded cheese in it, so that was good. The tacos were amazing. A little bland but add some spice with the salsa or sauce and it was perfect. The burrito I thought not quite as good, but will certainly appeal to those who value size or bang for your buck...or those very hungry. :) Great place. Walking into this place was a little bewildering. It's a renovated house with three entrances, but none of them really feels like the 'front' or the 'right one' ..as soon as we were inside, i got the weirdest feeling that we had walked through the wall like a ghost- or Shadowcat- and were suddenly standing there, looming over some diners' table.. but just wait a beat and someone will escort you past walls of interesting local art to a table of your own. At my friend's recommendation, i had the avocado and red pepper tacos. I asked for no cheese or sour cream and the server promptly picked up what i was putting down and said, "vegan avocado tacos, got it." I appreciate this every time i go somewhere new and this happens. The food came out quickly and we ate it quickly. Everything was pretty dang good. I had a very good experience here. It's definitely different, being a renovated house that is easy to miss. I have driven past it many times and never noticed it. The decor is just okay...not sure if they are going for that "rustic" look...many cracks in the wall, and could certainly use a fresh coat of paint. We ended up getting seated in the second "room", where there were 4 tables. I loved it, it was like we had our own private dinner! Black bean hummus was DELICIOUS. Fresh, warm pitas for dipping were a welcome surprise from the usual bagged tortilla chips many restaraunts serve. I ordered the upside down pot pie and the puff pastry was delightfully light and crispy. Perfect for my comfort food craving. My boyfriend ordered the wet burrito which was the length of his forearm...awesome. Very very generous portion size for a great price too. Like others have said, save room for dessert. That night their cheesecake was blueberry pie. Best I've ever had. Hands down. If you go just for the cheesecake it's completely worth it! Staff was very friendly as well.
