Been an OG back 40 customer since they opened, and have always had great service, yummy food and snazzy drinks. We seem to make it to Back 40 more often on Sundays for Brunch than any other time. The boozy coffees are delish and you cannot go wrong with any of the Benedicts they offer. My guy likes the hash benedict and I enjoy the Nashville bennies or the pulled pork. (Side note- took a star off for the two separate times Ive asked for poached hard and they come out runny- sorry guys. I cant do runny eggs!!) The truffle homefries are great as well as the hollandaise sauces that come with it. Each one has a different vibe. Cereal shots are always tasty, but honestly the bloody mary's go best with the bennies. Staff is always usually attentive and friendly, unless they are too busy like they were last Sunday but management made a full recovery and of course we'll be back. Tried Back 40 for the first time recently and thought it was just ok. When we walked in I was immediately hit with a smell that smelled kinda like sewage and when I went to the bathroom later I realized that is where the smell was coming from. The smell went away as we moved away from the entrance and to our table. The staff was very friendly, professional and attentive. Our waitress even came around and refilled our drinks without us having to even ask. We ordered nachos for the table which were amazing. I ordered the stuff portobello mushroom which was not at all what I expected it to be or like any stuffed portobello mushroom I've had before. That was good but not great. The pasta dish I ordered for my meal was tasty. The meatballs you could tell were homemade and fresh. I like the atmosphere minus the smelly entrance way. While I wasn't wildly impressed I wouldn't write this place off. It's a great space with great staff and decent food. read more

We spent a week on vacation in North Kingston. A lot of the places in the area offer the typical American/Comfort food. Back 40 is no different. However, their food is a step above all of the others. We were skeptical at first as it is a western-themed bar/restaurant in Rhode Island, but we were pleasantly surprised. When we are on vacation, we always try to go to a different local restaurant every night. We ended up going to Back 40 twice! During the first visit, 3 of us tried the Philly cheesesteak, the chicken gyro, a really great side salad ($3 upcharge), sweet potato fries ($3 upcharge), and the hot pretzel appetizer. I had a delicious NE IPA called "Haze Ho!" from Grey Sail Brewing. The second visit brought some repeats, including the same beer, gyro, and salad. We tried the regular fries this time. They were good. The highlight, however was the meatloaf platter. Delicious homemade food piled high! I gave Back 40 four stars because it wasn't the best food I have ever had, but it was definitely the best food we had this week. read more

We landed at this spot after long wait times from 2 other restaurants. Walked in and the atmosphere and vibe of the place was pretty cool and chill. They had plenty of seating indoor and on the patio. The 5 of us were starving after a day at the beach and the menu caught us off guard for a bar spot off the freeway. We all had such a hard time deciding what to order because everything sounded so good but everything tasted mediocre. We ordered the charcuterie board for the table, a Caesar salad, turkey blt, Mac and cheese w/ pulled pork, Nashville chicken sandwich, and I had the carne asada tacos w/ parm truffle fries. The charcuterie board -7/10, was good but we have had better and a bigger portion for the price. Carne Asada tacos- 2/10, all I saw was the braised short rib and thought I was in for a mouth full of flavor, but what you get is a soggy mess. Not sure how the tacos became so soggy, I tried to eat 1 taco before I gave up on the plate. The short rib was not tender, it was a tough and on top of that, there was no flavor. The salsa verde didn't add anything, it's suppose to be tangy and zesty and all I tasted was watered down muted parsley. The ingredients just did not compliment each other, when you took a bite, you tasted a little of the cabbage, the salsa, the cotija cheese, and the meat separately. I should of tried the fish tacos. Parm truffle fries- 10/10, this was the only thing I really ate during our meal. They were perfectly crisp and it was a big portion that we took some home and they were still delicious. It came with a Mayo dipping sauce, perfect combo. Mac & cheese- 5/10, was very bland and pulled pork yet again had no flavor or marinade, not even a hint of salt. Had to ask for bbq sauce to try to make it bbq pulled pork Mac and cheese. The Bbq sauce saved his dish. Friend who got Nashville chicken sandwich was so excited at first but expressed how it was an odd spice that didn't not work well. Can't rate the rest of the group's order, but we all discussed how the menu is a catfish lol, we all expected delicious flavorful food and everything was mediocre. It was shockingly difficult finding a restaurant to host us - we had a lot of places tell us they couldn't work with what we had in mind, and a lot of places who were willing but would have charged us a massive venue fee (it would have been like paying for a 2nd wedding!). We held a lunch after a burial at Exeter cemetery. The staff at Back 40 made everything so easy. We didn't know how many people would come -no problem. We didn't know exactly when we would arrive-no problem. They reserved the whole dining area for us and it was perfect. I think we ended up having 50 people and we were all able to talk to each other and sit with different people and enjoy some delicious food. Welcoming and comfortable space for a bittersweet event. Should have read the reviews before we went. Very mediocre food. Fries were cold, the fish in the fish and chips was mushy and tasted off, not rancid but not great. Just want to say we have been going there for years, our daughter and family live right up the street. We went t there tonight , 4 adults and 2 children. We were seated, ordered drinks and I believe our waitress s name was Breck, not exactly sure. The kids were going back and forth over what they wanted to drink.. which I assume our waitress didn't appreciate. . Once they decided she brought the drinks and then the next thing we knew, a new waitress came over and stated she was taking over because " Breck" had to leave. Well it seems as though Breck never left, was waiting on other tables. A short time layer I heard our new waitress say" that's ok " I like kids.. my point is .. Back 40 is a FAMILY restaurant so, if you do t want to wait on kids .. go to work at adult restaurant. The waitress that took over was wonderful.. just think management should be aware of this. Children are part of a FAMILY. Sooo To make your customer feel like they are a " problem table" is not cool. so the waitress that took over our table name was Arien, not exactly sure if the spelling but she went over and above to take care of us. Stopped here for some lunch on our way to Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The restaurant itself is situated in a great location. The decor inside is cozy and wide open with a lot of wood features. The service staff here were very friendly and kind enough to go ask any questions we had about some dietary conditions for my group. They made great suggestions about how to change ingredient options on some of the food choices. The food that we got was well seasoned, good portions and very fresh. One of the people in my group got the naan chicken sandwich and she said it was wonderful. The other person in my party and myself got the pulled pork tacos. I highly recommend them. They were packed with well seasoned pulled pork, slaw and pickled onions. They had a few sauces on them that really complimented the ingredients. read more

I love this interior of this restaurant. It is very warm and inviting and the staff is extremely friendly. The hostess was nice enough to let my boyfriend and I sit where we wanted. Our waitress was Julia M and she was very nice. We ordered appetizers which were the naked chicken wings and the Tater tots. The chicken wings were very bland and did not have much flavor. They would have been better if they were breaded but we weren't given the option to do so. For entrees we got the meatloaf and the fried chicken and they were delicious but they came out about 5 minutes after or appetizers. Working in the restaurant business I know that there should be a gap between appetizers entrees. Overall it was a good experience but we definitely felt rushed. read more

Stopped here on the way home from some breweries for dinner. We went on a Sunday and there was no wait, which was great. I had the buffalo wings and the Mac n Cheese. Both were delicious! The wings were so good, I could have definitely ate more. The decor in there was pretty cool. There is a nice fire place in the middle of the restaurant. It is very open inside with plenty of seating. They have a porch outside with some rocking chairs as well. Definitely would return and try other things on the menu. read more

I thought this restaurant was really good. They have a big food and drink menu. The rose sangria was really tasty and refreshing. For food we got some wings and the old bay tots. The wings were cooked well and both the buffalo and teriyaki sauces were solid. The tots were excellent as well and came with two different sauces. One was a cheese sauce and the other was an herb aioli. My friend got the Mac n cheese which looked good also. I definitely want to go back to try some of the entrees. It's really big and spacious inside. We visited on a Sunday night around dinner time and got right in. You can't miss the restaurant driving by and they have a big parking lot out back. We came by for dinner recently and were impressed with the renovations (I had been here when it was under a different name a few years ago). It looks very nice, and the servers were all very helpful. This being said, it was absolutely FREEZING inside! I kept my jacket on for the whole meal. On top of that, their menu is a bit limited when it comes to healthy / vegetarian options. I've been to Back 40 a number of times now and have really enjoyed it. I held off on going due to bad reviews and after they had the quick closing but after deciding to finally give it a try, I'm glad I did. First off, the space is beautiful. I know it took a long time for them to open while they did renovations but that time was clearly well spent. I love the wide open floor plan and the farm to table vibe. The staff have all been very friendly and personable which is always important. I've tried a few things on the menu and they've all been good. The Mac 'n Cheese was great and had a really tasty cheese sauce, the meatloaf was delicious and the pulled pork sandwich was awesome. There's also a nice beer list with a lot of regional offerings; some great IPA's and some sours on there as well. I understand the initial reviews of this place weren't very good but I think there's a lot to be said of a place that can take that criticism, turn around and make the improvements necessary. I am glad I finally gave it a try and look forward to return visits to see this place continue to progress. read more

The other people I was with reviewed the food as awesome too. The amount is worth the money! The Mimosa flight is awesome and so are the alcoholic coffee drinks. Great menu (based on my group of 4's experience) but a bit over priced. I would give this place a 3.5 if Yelp had half stars! My boyfriend and I shared the tots, which were flavorful and crispy. I got the arugula salad with goat cheese/pistachios/raisins/brussel sprouts, which said it came with "roasted winter vegetables".. but there was only 1 small cube of squash. Besides that, I loved the salad! My boyfriend got the mac-n-cheese with pulled pork; he liked it and ate the whole thing, but the menu said it had crushed crackers/some sort of crunchy topping.. which it didn't come out with. We shared the donut dessert and chocolate cake dessert with the couple we were with, and the chocolate dessert was delicious! My boyfriend thought the beer prices were very over priced, especially compared to the local restaurants. I was surprised at majority of cocktails for $12- that's a price you usually see in the city, not in South County. I did enjoy my cocktail (High Fashion) but it probably could've been $10. read more

It was just ok, the breading was bitter, not the best I have had but not the worse Either! I enjoyed the crabcakes for my entree, they were very good.
