Went to this place on Friday night for the first time. I had seen it driving by over the years, but never captured my attention. Fast forward to Friday, 5/29, when I saw a deal on my credit card's portal with restaurant.com. After seeing the deal and clicking on the site, I decided to look into what restaurants they had in Lubbock. Back 40 was one of about 4 restaurants in Lubbock on this site. I was able to purchase gift cards at a discounted rate to redeem at the restaurant. We go and, in short, we were told that the new owners, Jeff and Tina McCreight, had no clue what we were talking about, but IF it was legit (excuse me?!?!?) then they would NOT be honoring it. To add insult to injury, all communication was done via the waitress, even though Mr. McCreight was visible on the floor the entire evening we were there and even approached at least one table next to ours multiple times. As a result, I contacted the credit card company after we left. Credit card company asked me to contact restaurant.com, which I did earlier today. The website gladly refunded the gift cards ($100 worth) and stated they would be in contact with Back 40, as they were in violation of their contractual agreement. As a result of all the above, we will not be returning. Two stars are for the attentive waitress and pretty good, yet overpriced cuisine. Unlike the proprietors, we're being generous.

There being about 20-25 people there, how was our meal prepared with no culinary attention to detail? For example: my wife ordered the chicken fried steak, mash potatoes and salad. Her steak was so "bland and lukewarm" that it literally removed all sensitivity of taste from our tongues..., no seasoning or flavor whatsoever. On our drive home that's all me talked about. Mash potatoes were likewise "lukewarm and bland"..., then factor in the gravy..., exactly the same. Her plate obviously sat at the window too long or perhaps her food was simply "sitting there" waiting for us to order it. Her salad: there was nothing "green" about it, it was "all the white stalks" of the lettuce, literally 4 olives, a sprinkle of shredded cheese, 3 half slices of tomatoes with "gigantic croutons (that was interesting)". My "blackened chicken salad"..., salad was the same as my wife's; double-dang because I love salads and being type 2 diabetic and having high blood pressure this would have been the perfect meal for me. HOWEVER; the chicken was the worst ever because it was saltier-than-a-1820's-sailor..., horrible..., and drier than a camel's hump in the Sahari. I never knew that a chicken breast could be abused like that on purpose. So, how does such a nice looking place sell someone "absolutely ridiculously horrible food".

It's brand new, so it's clean and fresh inside! Our server was very attentive and did a great job…read more The food was just AVERAGE and the kitchen still loaded my wrap with ranch when I asked it be kept on the side. This isn't to say this is the worst food in existence, but for the price point I can't recommend this place. Let me start by saying this restaurant seems to have a massive variation in the quality of its dishes. I imagine the positive reviews probably ordered some sort of specialty signature dishes as what I got was just reprehensible. Do not order the tomato soup and grilled cheese, don't even consider it. For $9 I got a small cup of soup and HALF of a sandwich, must of been pretty good for the price right?.... I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that when I accidentally burn grilled cheeses at home, they are still better in every category than what I received here. Zero flavor. The tomato soup looked really good, but also had such little flavor that dunking the grilled cheese in it actually made the grilled cheese worse. This meal would've been a tough sell if my 5 year old cousin made it for me when I was sick. My friend also gave their green beans cause they didn't want it... and I can see why, it was also horrifically bland. Also nabbed a few tater tots from the chicken steak and they were super breaded, not bad but not impressive. The "shining" star of the experience was the mulita I got as an appetizer, quite good, like a 3/5 good though, still rather dry and covered in cilantro, came with some sauce, but overall the best thing I had. The decor of the place was just baffling. High ceiling, high chairs, white walls, random TTU alumni adorning the walls, tvs with sports running. Seemingly trying to be a nice place, but the kind of nice place where you can watch the latest football game while having an overpriced beer and the worst grilled cheese of your life. The service I got was fine, on the lower side of quality (especially for the price point). I did like the brown overalls they were wearing, very steampunk. When I saw this place had an overwhelmingly positive reception, I was excited to go there, but this was one of the most disappointing places I've visited in Lubbock which sucks cause it's local. For $20 i got half a grilled cheese, worst than canned soup, and 3 mulitas (which I shared). Maybe to some they would say this was a middling experience, but have some standards for yourself people. I sincerely hope that I just had rotten luck picking the worst item on the menu, and this place is actually quite good, but that's all optimism and no reality. What I got was one star, please fix your grilled cheese. 3/15 (+ brown overalls, + mulita, -everything else) Fails in pretty much every category, I'm sure some dishes are good, but I won't revisit in some futile attempt to find one

Never having been to Bubba's before, I wasn't quite sure what to expect when my brother's girlfriend suggested it after we went to view a drive-thru Christmas light tour. The sports-themed restaurant features a full bar, loudish music, and a variety of high-top and regular tables and booths. The women's restroom was mostly clean. Our waitress was attentive and kind. My drink took a while to come. I had the BLACKBERRY SMASH (Crown Royal hand shaken with a hint of Bubba's 33 sweet & sour, DeKuyper Razzmatazz Liqueur, and fresh blackberries - $9). The Monte Cristo was pretty delicious. It entailed "Roasted turkey, ham, American and jack cheese on wheat bread, batter-dipped, deep-fried and dusted with powdered sugar served with raspberry preserves" ($13.99). The fire fries (Habanero seasoning) paired well with it. My oldest had a really delicious looking club sandwich with regular fries ($13.99). My youngest had the bacon guacamole burger with fire fries ($14.99) and a Tropical Breeze mocktail ($5). She enjoyed her food, but wasn't drinking her mocktail and I asked why, then I tried it. It didn't taste like it should have. It wasn't good at all. Overall, I'd eat here again if friends wanted to meet up.
