Chicken shawarma plate and chicken Lunch special
    Aliz A.

I've came here twice now, first time for take out and I ordered the Lamb Plate. The rice and the lamb was very dry, so I thought because I took take out ill give them the benefit of the doubt to try again for dine In during lunch. They do have an outdoor seating near the English bay which I do like, the staff was not welcoming nor rude though. I ordered their chicken lunch special and my partner ordered the chicken plate. The only difference is Pita, salad and tzatziki added to the Plate for $4 more. The chicken and the rice was dry but they had added a dolmathes and that was VERY dry and not at all tasty. Overall, I don't recommend this place. I would say save your money and try another place near English bay!

They now have a bar section and the first time trying their food is not bad. Great service and vibe.

Three stars. No more than three stars. We tried a chicken wrap in the late afternoon. Nothing was special about it. The price was ok but the wrap was dry and there was not a lot of chicken in the wrap. Fresh vegetables were the only good thing about the wrap. If I really wanted a delicious wrap, there are many other choices in Greater Vancouver. The restaurant was small. Spaciousness was not an issue, but the environment or ambiance inside the restaurant did not make me feel that I wanted to go back unfortunately. It was dirty on the counter. To my impression, any restaurants in downtown Vancouver should be at least having an average or above average standard in terms of ambiance, price, service and etc. I don't see any in this restaurant.

Open and inviting cafe on a busy and crowded street with cafes and restaurants along west end of Denman Street in Vancouver. I tried falafels today. They were fresh, tasty, soft and generous in size. Humus was made fresh today, however, could be better. Owner is from Baghdad and extremely polite and friendly. Eating at the sidewalk table on a chilly fall evening was a new experience. Just for asking me to put my images and review here, I was treated with freshly made baklava by the owner. I admire to see immigrants working hard to make a living operating from a small real estate in expensive city

My vegetarian plate in the making.

Best falafel/shawarma spot in Vancouver. Grab a generous plate here and sit by the sea wall and feast on the delicious goodness! Their veggie plate includes a taste of everything- potatoes, rice, a little spanakopita, a dolmates roll.. each bite has a new flavour. And topped off with fresh falafels of course. The guys who work here are super friendly. My partner goes here frequently, and I just love how they greet him with a warm "how are you my brother?!" A wonder West End staple.

Since we're going with the thanks - I want to thank both Kath R and Marc D for pointing me in the direction of Babylon! A musical diddy dedicated to delicious chicken shawarma. [insert music icons here] Oh chicken, chicken - you filled my tummy so full of flavours that I have been raving about you all day. You put every lunch this week to shame...to shame! And you do it on the cheapo- on the cheap-cheap-cheap-o. Like $5.70! Raspberry soda-oda- whose brand name I've lost- I've lost in the bubbles of the fizzy sweetness - sweetness-sweetness Here comes the lahmajeen filled with meaty goodness-goodness (they were out of vegetable fill for the record). How can you go wrong? Although I'd spritz a little bit o tatziki on mine for next time! [next time with jazz hands] Oh, the love affair just keeps growing stronger and stronger...[insert music icons here]

This place has great energy and great food! Shawarma wrap was busting with flavor and bursting at the seams it was so big. Best in town, hands down.

    Wow! $7.50!

We went fairly late and found out that their last call was at 8:30 PM--something to keep in mind if you're planning a visit. Overall, I enjoyed the food profile, though the service could definitely be improved. It was challenging to get the server's attention, and some cutlery was missing until we asked for it. My friend and I shared the Mezza Sampler - Hot ($32), which included 2 falafel, 2 kibbeh, cauliflower, and halloumi fries. Each dish was quite good, but the highlight for me was definitely the fried cauliflower. It was served with tahini, tzatziki, and pita bread. I'd recommend this more for sharing, as it can get a bit greasy. Our other friends ordered the Lentil Soup (small - $5), served with bread crisps, and the Batata Narra ($10), which are potatoes in a tomato chilli sauce. They said both dishes were good, though the Batata Narra wasn't spicy at all.

We were greeted by what I assume was the owner (as I also saw him featured prominently in the YouTube video) and took a seat at a table in this relatively small seating area. I kinda had an idea of what I wanted so I started to order.. that is, until the owner told me that he recommended something else on the menu instead. I'd be lying if I said this didn't catch me off guard a bit and even rubbed me the wrong a little, mostly because I had my mind set on what I wanted but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and accepted his recommendation. Again, I'll admit that I was a little pessimistic during the wait. I told my girlfriend that I hoped the Philly was as good as he thought it was because if not, I was going to be severely disappointed and my review would highlight that. I gotta say, great call from the gentleman. The Philly wasn't the most traditional I've ever had but it was a very yummy variation with nice textural differences that made it an abundantly enjoyable experience. The meat was cooked very well, the cheese was gooey, the fried onions gave it a great crunchy bite and that sauce was a scene stealer. All in all, what started off as a bit of an uncomfortable experience ended in one of our favorite dinner outings of our trip. The only extra detail that I'd like to share to the owner is to update his menu highlighting his personal recommendations so people lean towards those more. I like to take recommendations and ask for them consistently but maybe others wouldn't have appreciated it and could've taken it a bit out of context.

Their space is pretty big and can easily accomodate a big group. Most of their items are also family-style shareables, making it a perfect place to go in groups! We started the meal with their special Yemeni coffee, it was so different! It had a light caramel colour, wasn't too sweet but more on the acidic side. It was presented in a gold tray with their traditional Yemeni coffee kettle and dates. For starters we got their Yemeni bread (super soft and HUGE) with hummus and a fava bean dip. Both were pretty good! For mains, I got their spicy beef with hummus and their Yemeni bread. The beef was cooked very well and was certainly flavourful. My partner got their falafel platter with bread and salad. The falafels were so crispy! Last for dessert we got their khunafa, LOVED IT! Reminded me of home. Their service was very nice, they took the time to explain everything to us. I would definitely come again but maybe in a bigger group so I can get their mandi or other big shareables!

The interior of the restaurant was also very nicely decorated. I do think Saba Foods is fancier than other places I've been to while exploring new cuisines and I personally prefer a more casual dining experience. As for the food, the portion sizes were very generous (though I did see other diners ordering individually). I shared the haneeth and saltah with a friend as well as got the kunafa and bint al sahen for dessert. The lamb was very tender and fell off the bone and the saltah came in a bubbling pot. I think the presentation of each dish was beautiful and was representative of its quality. My favourite dish was definitely the haneeth; it had a good combination of meat, rice, and vegetables. My reason for the missing star would be price point (total came around to $55 per person) as well as flavour as I'm used to having very flavorful dishes from other cuisines. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who hasn't tried Yemeni food before though!

My wife and I came here for our anniversary dinner and we were delighted. We ordered the Chefs Special Sampler for 2 - basically giving us a sampler of everything on the menu for $90 per person. We were really really full and couldn't finish it all. Highlights: - Chickpea Fetteh: warm delightful mixture of ground meat, chickpea sauce, with soaked pita at the bottom and crispy stuff in it. It just explodes with flavour and texture. - dip sampler: the hummus and eggplant mutabbah were really good but that pocket pita bread was out of this world good. Even the tabbouleh was good and my wife normally hates that. - the lamb tartare was AMAZING. It was kneaded so soft that it was practically a paste. When you combine it with the nuts and red spicy sauce and eat it with bread the combo is winning. - grilled Kibbeh and regular kibbeh - both really delightful - the grilled meat plate was great. In particular the chicken with the garlic tahini was really flavourful. The kabob mushrooms and peppers on top of smoked baba ganoush was soo good. Loved the smoke flavour. But I'm sure glad we did. The flavors here are at a complexity level above any Lebanese food that I've had elsewhere. Even the common dishes, such as hummus, baba ghanoush, and tabbouleh, all contain ingredients and spices that make them stand out and add a terrific level of complexity. For example, the tabbouleh includes not just interesting seasonings but also pomegranate seeds. It was not the only dish that was served with the addition of pomegranate. There was also a delightfully spicy sauce that seemed to be comprised of both pomegranate and harissa. The chef's tasting menu is a terrific way to sample most of the dishes on the menu. Our favorites turned out to be most of the cold course dishes that were served in the first of three rounds. This included: - Hummus - Baba ghanoush - Tabbouleh - A spice tray with a selection of olives As you would expect from a high-end Lebanese restaurant, the pitas are perfectly puffed and delicate. The hot dishes included lamb and chicken and were served on the traditional garlic sauce. The tasting menu concluded with an assortment of bite-sized pieces of baklava. If there was one shortcoming, it was the wine list. The white wines seemed to be of a singular note, although they were offered from four different countries. Unfortunately, they were out of the French Chardonnay, so I might be inclined to bring my own bottle the next time, assuming they have a corkage fee.
