Stealth Foodies landed and expanded in Maynard, MA this weekend and stopped by BABICO'S CAFÉ, just in time for both breakfast and lunch. Reminiscent of an old school family diner with a mom & pop feel, we slipped into a cozy booth and decided on the Greek Omelet and Turkey Club. The omelet (spinach, feta, olives, tomato) was nicely done and the home fries brought me back to some of the best truck stop dining experiences that I've ever had. The taste and feel you can only get from a big flat iron grill, with potatoes heaped up in the corner. Not greasy or overdone, but just right. As we were ordering the Turkey Club I was about to ask if there was a healthier substitute for the fries that came with it, but when the owner said they were the best fries in town I put my Waist Management Program on hold and decided to give them a try. The owner was right! Buttery, crispy, just kept on picking at them even after I was full. Two Yums Up for both our meals. If you don't own a GPS buy one, you'll need it to find this gem tucked behind a building, in a parking lot, near two one-way streets...next door to the Laundromat. Babico's is basically a diner. Not bad food, at all. They serve ice cream, too. Coffee's kinda weak. Nice staff, huge portions. What's not to like? Well, the pink very loud pink and aqua decor. It's really not conducive for anything but giving you a headache. Funny note: if you go back to the bathroom you experience a weird optical illusion effect. 10am on a sunday: The service is poor. We had a party of 5 and it took us about half an hour after being seated to get menus. We were not offered drinks and had to ask. I think they were training or something because the manager made us repeat the entire order back to the waitress, who wasn't native English.. our coffees were left empty for a while as we waited another half hour for the food, again the manager had to step in... I think this place is going downhill with the staff. The food was reasonably good but my egg whites were not completely set on an overeasy which is weird since we waited so long. I think the waitress was ready to check out or just had no idea how to serve. I say skip this place. We didn't make a scene or say anything, but you know when you get bad service. great atmosphere for sure! really stuck in time...their food might be as well. the food tasted like dishwashing soap, in particular the sausages and potatoes. the eggs and toast were amazing, cooked perfectly. but the chocolate chip pancake was cold...and the syrup was worse than school lunch syrup. coffee was good. but overpriced for the lack of flavor, food temperature, and overall experience. read more

I don't eat here very often, as I'm not a fan of this type of diner breakfast. If that's what you're looking for, you won't be disappointed. The prices are pretty good too and it's very cute inside, nice atmosphere with the pink and teal decor. Cons- basic diner fare, no real imagination to it. Came here for the first time this weekend and loved the old school diner feel upon entering. Greeted by friendly and attentive staff and our waitress was delightful. Quality of food was average and a bit overpriced in my opinion. 6.00 for a side of corned beef hash out of the can is overboard. If you are "cash only" you should trim the prices a bit. I've been going here since I was a little kid and it's always been the same. The atmosphere hasn't changed, comfortable and relaxing. The owner is always there and committed to his business. I live in Maynard and this is the small local breakfast place, yet every time I come here I've been disappointed. We consistently have to wait 20-40 min to have our order taken and it's never done with a smile or any sort of hospitality. They always seem understaffed for busy weekend mornings and the 2 waitress that do work there move slow and look mad at the world, not exactly an inviting atmosphere. Once you do get your food it is usually cold and unappetizing. We have lived in Maynard for 4 years and even on hungover mornings when I don't care to be rushed, I refuse to go here. I've been here 4-5 times over the first 2 years and it never gets better. It's always terrible food, terrible service and now I've just refused to go. read more

I ate here this morning. Unbelievably awful service. The server handed me a sticky menu and walked away without saying hi. She comes back in a few minutes and I place my order. She asks what I want to drink and I asked for an orange juice and a water. A couple minutes goes by and she says: "You wanted coffee, right?" I reminded her I wanted orange juice and water. She gives me orange juice, no water. I get my food promptly but she puts the plate about three away from me and starts walking off without a comment. As I'm stretching across the counter to grab my food I remind her I'd also like a water. No comment from her. No water, either. She never checks back to see how my food was. (It was so-so.) And I never got my water. I take my check and go the counter to pay. The dishwasher is right near the checkout counter. The guy washing the dishes stopped what he was doing to take my money. Inexplicably, he did not bother to dry his hands. I hand him the check and my money. I get a very wet $5 bill and a quarter in change. At least he was polite. I drop the wet quarter in the tip jar as my tip and leave. No one there deserved a tip, and had the quarter been dry, I would have kept it. AWFUL. read more

Horrible horrible service with attitude, won't ever go back. One waitress was clueless, the other had major attitude. Brought out one person's meal at a time and then got one of our orders completely wrong and we finished our meal and then the last persons meal came out, which we took to go...food is all frozen stuff from Cisco and the two men cooking apparently dont know their own menu. I had breakfast here this past weekend. While it wasn't anything remarkable, it also was just pleasantly good. It wasn't fancy - I ordered scrambled eggs (with cheese) and bacon - but sometimes you just want a good simple breakfast - and that is what I received. The place was clean, and although I can walk there now, there is plenty of off street parking. The staff were VERY friendly and courteous. I like my hamburgers done but stopped eating them as they are always dry. I have been going to Babicos for years but tend to get what I had one time and order it every visit. Today I decided to order a hamburger. After ordering I was told that once I have one, I will never want anything else. Guess what? I was moaning out loud and happy that it was too busy. They have a grill that is so different in that when the juices drop into the grill, the smoke of the juices send up the flavor back into the burger. Babicos is probably more about the hometown atmosphere than the food, but that being said, we have had some very yummy breakfasts there...and a few lousy ones too. But we go usually at least once a week and are always greeted with a smile from the super friendly waitresses, who know us by name. A friendly place wherein the decor hasn't changed since the 1950s. The Greek omelet was scrumptious, even if it was priced a wee bit too high. It was almost empty when I visited, but if you go, then it won't be nearly as empty. And if I happen to be there too, then we can hang out and commiserate about the time we went to Babico's together. This place is cash only! A colorful diner nestled in a parking lot on the busy street in Maynard. It's a seat yourself place that it seems the locals frequent. We ordered up our food and drinks. The coffee was hot but a bit burnt - not the best diner coffee ever. My hamburger club came on wheat toast and was decent. The hamburger itself was pretty hard and dense, like a hockey puck. The fixings seemed fresh and the fries were okay. We each paid $11 each with tax and tip so it isn't super cheap but by no means expensive. It seems like a typical diner but there is nothing spectacular about it. The best place in this area is still Thai Chili. read more

Nothing special to write about the breakfast. Very very plain. Really no effort put in with the ham and eggs. It looked and tasted like canned ham. Potatoes appear to be store bought not home made. I live in the area and have been to Babico's more times than I can remember. This is a classic diner and I would not change a thing about the old timey diner atmosphere. The staff and owner strike me as hard working folks always doing their best to please an incredibly diverse mix of customers. If you come here you need to be willing to make a quick read on whether this is a good day or a bad day for Babico's. If it's the latter just walk out and try again some other time. More often than not its a good meal and pleasant experience. I always come back. read more

My 11 year old and I ventured into this cafe for breakfast on a Saturday late morning. It has convenient parking and is located across the street from the Paper Store. There was only one other customer there besides us. My child ordered milk, short stack of pancakes, and bacon. I ordered scrambled eggs with toast and a cup of tea. Our bill was over $20. Aside from the bacon that seemed old, the rest of the food (eggs, toast, pancakes) were fine. Food presentation, service, and cleanliness can be improved dramatically. It depends on who is cooking here. You can always depend on the eggs, but not so much on the others, unless there is a sandwich special. Definitely not a place for coffee and this is where they should be concentrating to upgrade. Also, in this day and age, an eating establishment should take credit/debit cards. It just makes sense because then one might even purchase more, stay around for dessert, and linger longer, instead of having to figure out their cash outlay, which are the tips the nice waitresses depend on. Townies abound here and watch your politics, because it's a very liberal community and not open to outsiders, except the area high schoolers, where their parents are paying for them anyway.
