Mixed reviews. Decent Thai food place for the price. Had the Pad Thai & Curry Noodles with no complaints. Order arrived at the table fairly quickly. On the other hand, may want to consider take out or expect some potential impoliteness from the waitress. For myself, the hostess-waitress ask if we where there for pick-up or take-out. I said no we would like to dine in. We waited to be seat for a few minutes then I asked her if we could seated. Note, there wasn't any other customers at the restaurant. She then acted frustrated and then "corrected" stating I didn't let her know we wanted to dine in. Later about half way through our meal three more people arrived for dine in. I witnessed the same waitress arguing with them while they tried to order. Not just one, but all three. read more

So I finally found the best Thai restaurant in Louisiana and it's in Covington 'Baan Thai.' They have buffet for $8.95 from Mon-Sat 11a-2.30p so I got to try everything and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed with anything. Buffet had 3 different types of soup including my favorite hot and sour soup, spring rolls, pork, chicken and shrimp toasts, soft spring rolls, steamed chicken dumplings, 2 different types of salad, papaya salad & yum salad chicken, pad Thai, mixed vegetables, Thai basil chicken, red curry chicken, 3 different types of rice, sticky rice, white rice and fried rice and desserts. Great service with courteous and professional employees. I'm from NYC so not easily impressed but this Thai restaurant will probably give most Thai restaurants in NYC, a run for their money. read more

EXCEPTIONAL. I LOVE that their lunch buffet is even open on the weekend (Saturday only), so I took my husband as a treat for going into work with me on a weekend and we made it into a little date! It's a quaint little house and the moment you walk in the front door you are greeted by the delicious, savory smells of Thai food and the buffet in front of you! The set-up is great. Literally the moment you walk in the door, you get a plate, can go down the buffet filling your plate while staff greets you, gets your drink order, and sets up a table for you! Ours was by the cute little window, and it was the sweetest little home-like place I've ever eaten. It feels super fancy, despite being casual, I highly recommend it for a date. PLUS, the food is exceptional. From the crispy egg rolls and dumplings, to pad see ew, Thai fried rice, amd pineapple chicken, which was my favorite. I loved it because it forced me to get out of my comfort orders of pad Thai and green curry and try new dishes that I loved! Forgot the name of their ground chicken dish, but it had a lot of basil, was a bit spicy, and so exceptionally decadent, too! So disappointed... Been here several times and the food was decent. But every time I went back it got worse. Totally inconsistent! This time I ordered out and for the very last time. Soft spring rolls were just bad, basically just lettuce and the shrimp tasted old, even the peanut sauce wasn't good....at all. Beef Pad Thai was the biggest disappointment as it was flavorless and bland, dry, no veggies, just served with a small container of crushed peanuts and some type of spices... never again. Now the green curry I had was bland especially when the last time I had it here it was so spicy it was barely edible. This time it wasn't even spicy or flavorable. I even mentioned this to the person who took my order and they said they have no control over this. Basically no guarantee!on how it will come out... that's bat sh** crazy. Know the food you serve. Baan Thai has amazing Thai food! My family has been going for almost 9 years and the food is always good.

Have I really missed reviewing this place? I'm not sure how that is possible since I've been eating here about once a week since I moved to the North Shore! I am a Thai food addict and have been addicted to the stuff since I lived in Boston 20 or so years ago (man I sound so old!). Anyway, I have literally tried about 100 different Thai restaurants over the years as I have lived in several states, cities and traveled pretty extensively, often seeking out Thai in places while I'm visiting. Do I have a point? Yes, yes I do and here it is. This place is good. Really good. And cheap. Why do I think this place is good? Ok, here we go...First I'd like to mention that I have actually tried every single Thai restaurant in New Orleans and on the North Shore from Mandeville through Covington (8 or 9 places), but we have made a point to try every single place in a 15 mile radius so that we could determine our favorite place to go. As I mentioned above that we tend to eat Thai about once a week. This place stands out not just because they are always friendly and accommodating to my requests. Their food has attention to detail and flavor that I have generally found lacking of Thai places in the south of the United States. I often choose the Red Curry with Tofu or chicken/shrimp depending on my mood, and this is the best place I have found this side of Washington DC ($10.95 but may be a little more for other meats). The curry has a thick sauce as curry should - and this alone is completely unusual for this area. Every other curry I have tried at area restaurants is like water. The flavor is perfection. A hint of spice but not so much that I have to drink a gallon of water while I enjoy my meal. And it's sweet with the aroma of coconut and a hint of lemongrass. It is exactly as curry should be! And the portions, oh my! Always I have lunch the next day because they really give you a wonderful huge portion. When I order the Red Curry, I very specifically ask for what I want in it and they are always friendly and accommodating. I normally ask for green beans, eggplant, broccoli, and Tofu as I love that particular combo. Also, every time we go we can not resist getting the Thai Spring Rolls ($3.95!), and the Chicken Satay ($4.95!). I am of the strong opinion that an app should not cost about what a meal does and it irritates me to no end when I go out to eat and see that the apps are priced way higher than they should be. When that happens, more often than not I will not go back because as I mentioned, it really irritates me. Apps should be an add on sale people, not an excuse to gouge customers! OK, anyway, their prices for appetizers are awesome and we always order 2. I've had the spring rolls and they are exactly as they should be. There are 4 on the plate and they come with a sweet and sour sauce. They are delicious. Their Chicken Satay keeps me going back as it is juicy, tender, flavorful and the sticks are a very good size. This is served with peanut sauce and cucumber sauce and both sauces are divine. Peanut sauce is at the top of my obsession list and the one from here is perfect, the flavors exactly as they should be. A tiny spicy, a tiny sweet....I'm making myself hungry! Moving on, we've also had the fresh rolls ($4.95 for 2) and they were very good, exactly as expected. And we've also had a chicken dumpling ($4.95) and that was also good. It came with a soy sauce based sauce. I've had the Pad Thai ($10.95) and that is perfectly flavored, exactly what you would expect. I've also had the Chicken Basil I think the dish was called ($10.95) and that was veggies and chicken mixed with basil in a light tasting brown sauce. Very refreshing. My partner always has their pineapple fried rice and he loves it ($11.95). He loves it so much that we went there on Monday night, and he had the leftovers on Tuesday and today is Thursday and he said he wanted to go there again because he was craving the rice. I told him we could do the buffet tomorrow for lunch maybe! Anyway, the pineapple fried rice is a little spicy with a bit of a curry flavor, sweet and hot and it has a ton of white meat chicken, cashews, and broccoli, peppers (though he asks for no peppers), onion and carrots. It's a nice mix and a hearty, flavorful meal. He also always gets the Tom Yum Soup ($4.95 small/$8.95 large). I've had it and for me it's just OK. This is the one dish that I felt another Thai place did better and that is the Chill Out Cafe in New Orleans. Theirs is great. One time I ordered the Mango with Sticky Rice desert and it was so good. Sweet sticky rice with coconut milk and slices of fresh mango. Yum! We have had the buffet for lunch twice and it's really good and a great value at $7.99. If they are running low on anything just ask them and they will make more fresh for you. It needs some updating with the decor but the food is excellent. When you go in, nicely suggest they get some soft lighting and paint the walls a deep Teal or Red! read more

Yummy Thai food in a beautiful atosphere. The decor was lovely and it is just a nice place. There was nice classical music playing. On to the more important issue, the food.. It was delicious. I had the dumpling soup to start. The dumplings were amazing, definitely freshly made, and had a lot of shrimp. in them. I shared the ginger stir fry with another member of my party and that was excellent as well. The service was incredible. They were very attentive about everything and even gave my mother and myself two little bonus deserts and a rose! Go here if you like Thai and want to eat in pretty surroundings. read more

I had to update my rating to 5 stars, simply to make up for the bad service I got the first time I visited. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Covington. Fresh food, a-typical menu selections along with your favorites. Thai hot is held very dear to these people and be prepared if you ask for your dish that way. I have tried several things here and my favorites are all of the curries and the mee grob. This dish is like a Thai rice crispy treat with noodles, lightly sweet, mildly sour with a hint of spice. Amazing. Their curry is literally the best I have had. I dream about it. I've started eating here more than once a week. With a 7.95 lunch buffet filled with many options that are cooked in small portions to avoid spoilage and most dinner items costing around 10$ it make that weekly visit or two easy on the pocket book and good for the soul. read more

Don't let the converted-bank exterior turn you off. The food here is spectacular. The egg roll was full of fresh vegetables, and the soup was perfectly brothy and full of even more fresh veggies. Both of those came to the table before we even ordered our lunches--because they come with all lunch orders. The pad thai was superb. Truly, it was piping hot, uber fresh and perfectly cooked--not over seasoned or greasy. And the nam pla, spicy fish sauce, is some of the best you can find: chuck full of peppers and lime juice. The staff were super friendly too. When I am in Covington, I will definitely be returning here. read more

I had the Cashew Chicken (fried chicken--they give you the option of Fried or Sauteed) and the Massaman Curry both extremely robust, memorable and flavorful with excellent ingredients and a healthy amount of veggies. We go here once a week for the lunch buffet. Good price, and fresh food. It's very delicious! The service is not as good since the new owners, and I'm sure the quality of the food has also suffered. However, this is better than any asian buffet in the area that serves all the same food off the distributor's truck. I wish they offered desserts, but other than that, I have no complaints. We would not come here every week, if we weren't satisfied! Definitely check this place out! read more

Went back recently to try this restaurant again and can now recommend it without reservation. We were thrilled to find that they now are preparing our take out dishes mild--just as we requested--and 3 times in a row, each time with a different person taking the order. Hooray!!! Now i can eat there, too. It was killing me to have to drive past them to go to places with less well-prepared and less tasty food, just because of the red pepper issue. Now I can eat the best Thai food on the Northshore, too. The pad tai and glass noodles are always delicious, full of flavor and spices, just minus the heat in my case.. I also love their fried dumplings and often order the chicken and coconut milk soup, as well. My husband likes the chicken satay, being a big fan of peanut sauce. We were a little disappointed in the mhee grob (spelling?). It was okay, crunchy and a mixture of all the right flavors, but overall much more sour than the sweet flavor we are used to. I'm looking forward to trying the curries, as some reviewers have highly recommended them. This restaurant is open every day and until very late, which is very convenient. They do a nice take-out business, but it is in a cute cottage with a porch for outside seating, as well, so it is great for dining in, too.. read more

Is it sala Thai or Sara Thai... No one knows. But this place is legit. They've changed ownership several times within the past 4 years, but their quality and flavor is decently consistent (with a few expected ups and downs due to changing ownership). Soft spring rolls are a favorite. Really enjoy the spicy thai fried rice (vegetarian) and the pad kee mow (with beef). 3 star spice is recommended if you like a good kick of spice but also like tasting other flavors. read more

This restaurant is in an old house, and it's super cute. We easily found street parking (it's in a more residential area) right in front. The food was tasty, and they do have a lunch buffet if that's your thing. The service was also super friendly. Vegetarians, FYI: they will totally do tofu instead of the meat options listed on the menu (when applicable). I don't know why it isn't listed, but I ordered a dish with tofu and they did not seem to find that problematic in the least. read more

Walked in on Friday at 1:50 after waiting 10 minutes for someone to greet us, we were asked to find our own seats when sign clearly said wait to be seated. Waitress comes to table and tells us that we can only order through the menu only when we came to try variety of the food at the Buffett which runs till 2:30. She was rude and wouldn't take out time for her guests questions, so we left. Won't return and drove past 3 competitors restaurants from Old Mandeville to give them a try. read more

Loved it for dinner. Great atmosphere. Basil Eggplant with Pork, Cashew Chicken, and Sweet & Sour Shrimp, and The Duck was what we ordered. All was great. Prices are very good for the quality and quantity of food. Make sure you get the Spring rolls for an appetizer. I LOVED all the food, always cleaned my plate, and always left MORE than a 20% tip on both buffet and takeout. The same server was always there getting our drinks. One day a few weeks ago, the curry was cold. Everything else on my plate was hot except for the curry, so I didn't eat it. The server loudcapped me in front of the entire restaurant and said, "We are going to charge you for the food you didn't eat." I said, "I didn't want to make a big deal of it, but I didn't eat it because it was a little cold." She proceeded to tell me there was NO WAY it could've been cold and that it must've been because it's cold outside and I took too long to eat it (even though the rest of my food was hot). When I checked out, she continued to argue with me and tell me that I was lying. So I left and I wrote a similar review. TODAY my friend ate at the buffet by herself and was treated very poorly. After her meal she was told, "Please tell your friends they are no longer allowed here." Keep in mind neither of these friends had anything to do with my situation, other than the fact that they happened to be with me. Baan Thai, this is NOT how you treat good-paying, regular customers. If you think I'm not going to continue posting reviews after you delete them, you're sadly mistaken. You did this to yourself. I've eaten here 3 times for the buffet. Atmosphere is good either inside or on the patio deck. Th food quality is also good, but not equivalent to the Thai Buffets in Baton Rouge. There are two BIG negatives. 1. The buffet is always empty. You open the trays, and there is nothing there. If you go anytime after 1pm, you are jacked, even though the buffet ends at 2:30. 2. The waitress is rude and mean. She is the younger one that is a bit on the large size. I believe she will be the reason I will not return again. read more

Sala Thai is my favorite choice for Thai in the area. Last week there was a parade in Covington and menu express was unable to pick up my order (totally not anybody's fault!) and I was devastated. The peanut sauce that comes with the satay is the best I've ever had, and their Massaman curry is perfection. I always also order the chicken dumplings, which cannot be beat. I still haven't visited the restaurant but I look forward to going there soon. This is the best Thai food I've had outside of NYC, and beats most places in new york. Thanks, guys! read more
