Thai curry!
Sejal M.

We went here a month ago as we were craving Thai food. We ordered spring rolls and Thai green curry with tofu. I had asked to take out eggplant from curry as my husband is allergic to it. We enjoyed spring rolls they were delicious. Their hot sauce is so tasty. As for the curry they forgot to remove eggplant. It was good we noticed it right away. They remade it. It was delicious. Their food is excellent and the staff is wonderful. I will recommend this place.

Decided to come check out Baan Thai based on a friends recommendation and I also looked at a bunch of yelp reviews so it looked promising. Here's what we ordered: 1) Chicken satay skewers 4 for $10 very good 4/5 2) Tom kha gai - chicken coconut milk soup - this was outstanding and how Tom kha soup should taste 5/5 3) Pad Thai chicken 2.5/5 the flavour didn't really do it for me. It was thick and gluey but I've had better tasting Pad Thai. Tasted like the tamarind paste they used needed to be watered down a bit and maybe add a bit of lime to balance the flavour. 3) Beef kra pow 3.5/5 - beef was tough. With minimal pieces of meat with lots of peppers. We ordered medium spice and it was too spicy for my wife. I found the spice level okay but the beef was tough. Not tender Here's where I found not to my liking. The dishes were a bit more expensive than other Thai restaurants I've had in Ottawa. The servings I found a bit smaller and for the price not as generous of a serving. For these four dishes my daughter had a sprite and the total was $78 with tax and tip. No alcohol and just water for us to drink. Service was a bit spotty as the restaurant filled up. The ladies serving seemed a bit overwhelmed. It's a smaller local Centrepointe neighbourhood restaurant maybe 10-15 tables max. Overall it was not horrible but just mediocre for me.

Loved this tea service! Lovely!! Shared it with 2 others.

Maybe only 3 1/2 stars, if I could... mostly because of the cramped seating. But we were a party of 9 which had to be seated at 2 tables back to back, and this place gets very, very busy over the lunch hour! I'm so glad I made reservations. Previous reviewers have been right-on with their comments about the location; this place is surprising because it's in the middle of nowhere in a strip mall! Having said that, the seating area is really not big: about the size of an open-concept apartment, if you can imagine that. They've put 2 sets of curtains beside a couple of the tables, but they didn't do much to diminish the noise in here. It was hard to hear each other speak! Really it's a 4-star because of the food and the presentation of it - it was wonderful and so pretty! I will try to post a picture or 2. We ordered green tea which was aromatic and flavourful ($2.50); I ordered spring rolls ($3.50) which were very, very tasty - so good in fact that a colleague requested an order after seeing this! The menu is not extensive, pages and pages. Instead, they offer a few variations of a couple of things, ie: noodles with either beef, chicken, or shrimp; and stir-fry with the same choices, and so on. They have a special of the day which gives you a cross section of samples from these choices, very reasonable at $14.00. However, I chose a plate that had cashews and chicken in it ("H" on the menu - about $10.00). The food was really very good. And everyone appeared to enjoy their meals. It was quite filling! And for our event, the service was good: attentive enough without hovering, and fast enough. There were 2 or 3 servers, who kept surprisingly good control over the crowd, considering how busy it was.

I will say it is a solid 3.5, authentic Thai food, we came a bit late at 8:40pm on Friday, they close at 10pm. We ordered duck curry and red curry pineapple shrimp. The food was as expected, no surprises on either side. Service was good. However, I did not find anything creative, new or exciting to order. If you just want good Thai food, this is the place.

BF & I decided to try out Baan Thai for our date night. He had made a reservation for 7pm on a Saturday, several days ahead of time. When we arrived, at 7pm, we had to wait because all the tables were occupied. I'm not sure what is the point of making a reservation if we are to arrive and expected to wait? The couple behind us mentioned they had also made a reservation. We weren't impressed. We waited 20 minutes for a table to leave and be cleaned, before we were seated. I decided on the chicken panang since I had heard many good comments on it. BF couldn't decide on a dish so he asked the waitress for a recommendation. She didn't seem to care and was in a hurry. We felt rushed. In the end he ordered the yellow curry. He also got a soup for appetizer. Our food came fairly quickly. The soup he had ordered was very watery, he didn't care for it. The yellow curry was good, and the panang was decent. I found the portions small for the price, and the side of rice was extra (2.50$). While the food was not bad, it could have definitely been much better. After the reviews we'd read, we were disappointed. I've had better panang and better portions for prices at other Thai restaurants in the city. Will not be returning.

We enjoyed our dinner here... it was delicious, and at the same time nothing spectacular. We found the food overly sweet. We ordered the oyster beef with additional broccoli, the sauce was a bit watery, and sweet. We also ordered the Pham Thai, the noodles were cooked perfectly, but the flavour lacked complexity. Needed more fish sauce, garlic and chillies. The service was good, besides the fact they started cleaning the floors while we were eating... and the smell of cleaning products overwhelmed my senses. I would go back for take out, if in the area.

Excellent Thai food! Hidden gem material? Probably. The location is out of the way and the quality of the restaurant was surprising for a suburban strip mall. We ordered the Kaow Ob Supparod (pineapple dish) and a shrimp and green bean curry dish. Both were excellent, almost too much food but too good to bring home anything. The food was not particularly spicy, but full of flavor, which I like. Nothing seemed over or under cooked. Restaurant is beautifully and tastefully decorated. Lots of things to look at without being too busy Seating area does not feel cramped for a small space, but best suited for couples or small groups of four. Six people would require moving tables around. Lovely dinner wear in the blue and white, and bamboo table mats, nice little extras. I did notice what seemed to be a lot of security cameras for a small place, counted at least 4. Service was quick and friendly. We don't remember waiting on food very long but we had a small order, just two dishes. We visited on a Monday evening, but there was still a small crowd finishing their meals around 7pm. Mostly older, Caucasian couples who could probably afford to eat here more often then ourselves. We sat beside a group of women talking about their pets, kids, gardeners and younger husband. Felt like an episode of Nepean House Wives. The food is not cheap, you can see their menu online, but it is good very quality and portion sizes are reasonable. We would definitely go back again. I think this is one of our top two favorite Thai places in Ottawa.

Calamari!
Mimi J.

Thai I had a craving for flavorful and spicy food, so I decided to try some Thai food. I came here as most reviews were positive and were saying this place was a hidden gem, and the photos looked beautiful and delicious as well. I was scared as some reviews said the wait for dining/take-out was very long (near 1 hour)! But I came 45 minutes before closing on Sunday night so I figured it shouldn't be that busy. There were 3 other tables wrapping up, which was a good sign! The interiors are clean and comfortable, although decoration is not as ornate as some other restaurants. I ordered the duck (red curry $17...the website prices were cheaper so it must of gone up), and the grilled calamari appetizer ($8). I was disappointed that a medium jasmine rice cost $3.50 as usually other places have a small side of rice for free. Fortunately, the wait was only about 15 minutes for the food; once we got the food, we were the last ones dining! Red duck curry: good portion, duck meat was tender, and red curry sauce was slightly spicy and had a great harmony of flavors. There was sliced baby corn, peppers, and lettuce. Really good with the sauce drizzled over the rice! Grilled calamari: tender, and charred slightly. The spicy sauce it came with was actually spicy! However, the portion for this was really small (see my pic); it should be double of what it was! Service was ok, I had to ask to have my water filled up the first time but after that it was fine. They were probably tired and wanting to go home. If you come before closing, they start to sort the washed utensils so it is loud at times. Overall, their prices are WAY too high...the duck curry would have been about $15 elsewhere and the calamari was too small of a portion. I will be trying other thai places before returning to this one!

Coconut soup with chicken

I've been going to Baan Thai for many years now with my family. Since I was in town for the weekend, we returned again and was not disappointed! My favourite dishes here: 1. Tom Kha Gai - Coconut soup with chicken 2. Chicken skewers 3. Shrimp and eggplant with Thai basil 4. Red curry with Duck Other tips: 1. Baan Thai has a devoted take out fanbase - Since the restaurant is small, you may have trouble finding a table on last minute notice. If you want to eat in the comfort of your own home then take out is a great option 2. As mentioned earlier, it is the bestttt idea to call in advance for a table. They'll have it really with menus and waters right before you walk in Baan Thai is one of the only restaurants that's survived over the years in this quaint neighbourhood. I know a ton of people who come all the way from Kanata just to eat here!

One of my favourite places to go for Thai food that is still central but not situated downtown…read more It is a decent sized restaurant tucked away in a plaza at the corner of Alta Vista Drive and Bank Street. It has a very nice ambience inside due to the mix of decor and table placement. It is intimate yet casual. Even when the restaurant is busy, it does not feel cramped nor rushed. I have come many times during lunch with a group and the service is always excellent and the food is amazing. Everything is always flavorful and the staff and kitchen are really helpful with ensuring those with dietary restrictions are taken care of. If you have a large group (10+), I would recommend calling ahead and reserving a table, but there was once when we had last minute change in plans and even though it was busy, the staff was very accommodating. Be aware that because this is a smaller plaza in a busy part of town, parking can sometimes be an issue, especially during lunch time. The pricing of the food is no more or less than what is expected of a sit-in place but I think for the quality of everything you get, it is a great deal. There are also lunch specials which is easy on the wallet but you also get good portions (they definitely don't skimp). I recommend the green curry dish (as pictured is the beef version), pad thai, and drunken noodles.

Beef Penang: the beef was over cooked and tough. Pineapple fried rice with seafood: it was good and has nice curry flavour. Pad Thai: part of the dish was salty. Papaya salad: the dressing was too spicy and lacks the sourness to balance the dish. Garlic shrimp: was supposed to be garlic fish, but the server forgot to tell us ahead they don't have fish. There was only one server at the restaurant that night and we waited almost an hour after the appetizers for the main dishes to arrive. I gave the server credit for trying her best to serve every table. Overall, the appetizers were the only highlight for the dinner.

I got the Chicken Pad Khee Mao ($12) and it was excellent. It had a lot of vegetables, which I loved. It had broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, Bok Choy and bean sprouts. The vegetables were all dente which I liked. I normally don't like bean sprouts and I forgot to ask to have them omitted, but it ended up being ok, because the amount of bean sprouts was not excessive and they tasted ok. The chicken was lean chicken breast slices. The thick rice noodles were a good texture, soft but not too soft. The flavour was also excellent. It had a bit of spice but it wasn't too hot. The noodles also weren't too oily. They fry it up in a wok when you order it, so it's very fresh. My friend had their iced tea and a few appetizers and she seemed to enjoy them. The couple working the stand were very welcoming and friendly. Note that the prices at the Farmers' Market are a bit less than on the restaurant menu. Not sure if the portions are smaller, but I think it's a great way to try their food for a bit less. I really enjoyed the Pad Khee Mao and I'm looking forward to trying more items from them.

Maybe the definition of being a foodie should include finding the food stand's brick-and-mortar store after devouring great food and drink at a market. It's exactly what we did. It makes sense if we aren't at the market on weekends. We can get our Thai fix here. I ended up getting finger food from this eatery at the market. I ordered a pork wonton and a shrimp spring roll. The man at the stand was so nice that he gave me a pork wonton on the house. It was a nice surprise and I will never say no to free food. I also got a Thai iced tea. Drinks were self-serve once you got a cup from him. I made the mistake of pouring sala cider instead. Oops! He was great getting me another cup and I made sure that I got Thai iced tea, which was cold and excellent on a hot day. It's funny that I ended up having both drinks. I loved my pork wontons. They were crispy on the outside. The filling was nicely seasoned. I could taste basil, which made them heavenly. There was decent shrimp filling in the spring roll, which had a nice crunch to it. My friend got the chicken pad khee mao. She loved it. She said that it had bean sprouts, which aren't her thing. However, there weren't a lot of them and she ate them all. I didn't have a chance to volunteer to eat them. The food was that good! I want noodles now. I hope to get some when I'm back, along with more finger food. (265)

She has a review, so if you're bored reading mine, go read hers instead. I frankly wanted to simply say in this review to read hers and skip writing one... haha! We walked in. The lobby was beautiful and cozy, showcasing the Thai culture with dragons and more. We were seated pretty quickly. This restaurant had a lunch menu. Yay, deals! I got the gang garee gai. It was yellow curry with chicken and potatoes, in coconut milk, with steamed jasmine rice. My friend got the beef kao soi, which was a curry soup with noodles. We got a constant stream of iced water. Thank goodness! We were both in dire need of cooling down being out and about on a hot summer day. It also came in handy while we were dining. Our food didn't take long to prepare. I was excited to chow down. The gang garee gai was yummy. I liked the curry flavour. The chicken was tender. There were a few potatoes that lightly thickened the curry. I loved the subtle coconut milk in the sauce. The jasmine rice was perfectly done. The downside was that the curry was salty. My friend agreed with my assessment, as her soup was also salty. At least the sodium levels were consistent here. She also made the comment that her dish was lacking vegetables, except for a thin slice of red pepper. I could tell that this meal threw my thirst level off the rails for the rest of my day. I had six drinks after this meal, without counting the iced water refills here. I downed two consecutive bubble teas that night, which I rarely do. The positive from the salt increase in my system: I was not bloated afterwards. The washrooms are downstairs. It is an older building, so it's not built for accessibility. The washroom was clean. It's street parking here. You can probably find a side street to park for free. The service was excellent. If the salt is toned down, I'd return to try more dishes off the menu. Otherwise, expect to be thirsty all day after eating here. (287)

Overall, I thought the food had good flavour, but it was too salty and didn't have enough vegetables. We ordered from the lunch menu and I got the Beef Kao Soi ($17.50). It came with a generous portion of beef. The beef was tender. The deep-fried noodles were tasty. The curry coconut milk broth was full of flavour, with the tiniest amount of spicy heat, but it was too salty for my tastes. Also the dish was lacking in vegetables. The only vegetables I got was that tiny sliver of red pepper in the picture I posted, and some green onions (which I consider more of a garnish). Maybe this dish doesn't traditionally come with vegetables? I don't know, but I did not feel virtuous eating just meat and noodles, lol. My friend got a chicken curry and she found her meal salty as well. Service was lovely. Very attentive but not intrusive. We drank a lot of iced water firstly because it was such a hot day out and secondly because the food was salty, and the servers refilled our waters regularly. The dining room is nicely decorated with traditional Thai items. The food itself I would give 3.5, but I'm rounding up for good service and nice ambiance. If they went easier on the salt, I would have enjoyed it much more because the seasoning and spices were great. Street parking only.

I've been wondering if anybody had khao soi in Ottawa since my return from a month over in Thailand…read moreand an extended portion of that in Chiang Mai. After searching around for reviews all over the place, Wandee sounded like they had some had khao soi that was as good as you find in Chiang Mai. Parking in the area is plenty but free parking might be harder to find, either way, lots of parking. It looks like it's mostly a pickup counter and they have a picnic table setup outside and a few other tables. Staff are super friendly. I placed my order oh khao soi and took it to go. When I got home and popped the lid, it smelled pretty nice but looking at the order, I felt like I might have got the wrong order. I poked around in it a little bit and there were definitely noodles in it. Did the taste test...honestly, I'm not sure what it was but it tasted like they may have taken a yellow curry dish and tossed some noodles in it and sent it to go. Wasn't a fan of their khao soi as it was lacking any depth or intensity. It was extremely thick and creamy as well. If this is just their yellow curry, I don't think it's for me. May try a different dish if I return but definitely won't get getting this again.
