Heat pumps installed alongside existing central air is not an uncommon request, but we had a great conversation with Brook on how we might update to a more modern system in the future, given our original(!) furnace's age. Side questions for him aside, we had a thoughtfully sized system outlined and quoted within a day, and scheduled within two weeks. Our experience with the installation was similarly great, with the team arriving promptly as scheduled and taking the care to put on shoe coverings moving through the house. Everyone was polite and efficient, bringing the plan to life and bringing us in early when there were onsite decisions to be made in our unique spaces. When an issue arose on the cooling not blowing as cold as we had expected, they were quick to assist with troubleshooting, and had it fully remediating within the week. Permits are still pending due to the Oakland backlog, but their lead electrician will also be onsite during the inspection process so I have no worries there. They were also able to squeeze us into their busy schedule so we could get AC before the heat wave! During installation, they ran into several challenges with placement of the new unit and some wiring that needed more attention. They worked through and around them to make everything work out in the end. I really appreciate their flexibility and expertise to navigate all the roadblocks without changing the scope of work. TIP: Measure the space where the unit is going to be placed and make sure the new unit will fit OR that you discuss this before the project starts.

On the first visit, the technician, Mohammed, didn't even inspect the system. He simply told us that older units are noisy and that our only options were to live with it or replace the entire system. Because the problem continued, our home warranty company scheduled a second visit. I specifically requested a different technician, but they sent the same person back. I tried calling their supervisor to come out or send someone else but they kept dodging my call. When I answered the door and explained the issue was still happening, he just shrugged his shoulders. I had to insist that he actually go into the attic and inspect the unit this time. After a short time, he came back down and said he had "tried everything" but never explained what he checked or what the actual problem was. Again, I was told the only options were to replace the system or live with the noise. I also never received any written work order explaining the diagnosis or repairs that were supposedly attempted. Not feeling confident, I hired another HVAC company for a second opinion. Within minutes, they diagnosed the real problem as a failing blower motor, explained everything clearly, and gave me the option to replace the motor instead of the entire HVAC system. The repair was completed that same week, and the vibration was completely resolved. I understand a 21-year-old system won't last forever, but every homeowner deserves a thorough inspection, a clear explanation of the issue, and repair options when they're available.
