Whoa, they are a non-profit organization! Good for them. I was relieved and delighted to see that…read morethey survived the pandemic. Small-town, old-school theaters like this are vanishingly rare, and this one adds a lot of value to the community. My wife and I have caught a few films here more recently, and a standup comedy show many years ago. It seems like their main shows are limited-release indie or foreign films (bless them for that). However, they also advertise a Flashback Friday feature (5pm every week) for a major discount: last month it was The Goonies for $5 and School of Rock for $2. Wow! Besides films, they continue to offer music concerts and stand-up comedy. They are also hosting a Shark Tank style event for the local high school's young entrepreneurs group; very cool. Other reviewers mentioned that this joint is run down?? I didn't see it. The theater is very comfortable and the entire facility is spotlessly clean. I'm not sure of the ticket prices, but I paid $27 for two Saturday matinees and a 16-ounce adult beverage. Yes, they have a popcorn machine and candy, plus local craft beer.

I was extremely…read moreimpressed by the almost fully horizontal, comfortable leather seats, which felt like the movie theatre version of business class (the latter being a lot more...aspirational). Inside, the theatre was a bit too hot and stuffy, but it got better as we got used to it...or someone else notified them! The hallway into the theatre smelled like BO, which was unforeseen, but the theatre itself did not, thankfully. The bathrooms were almost fully out of toilet paper on a busy Friday night! However, when I told the one person I saw working there later on, she was very nice and said she'd tell someone to take care of it (and that person did!). It isn't bad enough to deduct two stars, even with other minor issues, but the sound itself was kind of bad at times...this is one of the main things a theater should be aware of! Some loud sounds in the movie resulted in some of the speakers rattling annoyingly. I am surprised. Movie theatres should be able to handle loud sounds. But in my recliner, it was easier to stomach...

For $15 for the pretzel bites and cheese dip (you get 10 bites). Seems pretty small for the price. Vanilla milkshake is basic. The chocolate one was better. Also. But looking around love the posters and the promotional popcorn buckets. After about 20 minutes of previews the movie started. I did the Laser at AMC and the picture and sound was excellent. My only complaint is that the men's bathroom needs to be mopped more often. Aim, people, aim!

I hadn't been to this movie theater in years, and wow, does it ever need an update…read more The concession area was especially confusing. I still have no idea what the concession stand on the left was for. Then, straight ahead, I spotted another counter, but when the staff member noticed me approaching, he disappeared behind a wall. After turning the corner, I found a third concession area with an employee actually standing at the register, so I ordered from him. I wanted a drink and a large popcorn. He told me the popcorn was available in the self-service area, but I wasn't interested in grabbing a bucket that had been sitting out. I also like to add butter halfway through the movie, so I asked if I could get a fresh batch instead. He said that was fine and pointed me back to the second counter--the one where the employee had vanished earlier. I walked over with my empty bucket and had to get the attention of the staff member, who was busy on his phone. To his credit, he apologized for not noticing me and happily filled my order. On a positive note, another employee was actively cleaning the concession area, which was good to see. As I headed toward my auditorium with my snacks, the air felt humid and muggy. There was also a noticeable musty smell lingering throughout the hallway. My guess is that it was coming from carpets that hadn't been replaced or deep-cleaned in a very long time. The auditorium itself had a lot of seats packed closely together. I suppose I've been spoiled by other AMC locations with their spacious, cushioned recliners and convenient tray tables. Thankfully, no one ended up sitting directly beside me. Unfortunately, the seats weren't very comfortable. There was a noticeable lump near the back of the seat cushion, likely the result of years of wear causing the padding to shift and bunch up in one spot. To make matters worse, the cup holder on my right contained a pool of sticky slushie residue, which added to the overall impression that the theater wasn't particularly clean. The bright spot was the movie experience itself. The sound and picture quality were excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

That said, I did decide to donate this year, mainly because I really wanted the cute Arch jigsaw puzzle, and I designated my donation gift to go to the Block Museum. This place is a hidden gem. I am OBSESSED with William Blake...like, I own his entire poetry collection and two coffee table art books (one of which is from the current Block exhibit -- Age of Aquarius -- that I had to buy after visiting). The current exhibit is freaking brilliant. It's so well done, amazingly curated and organized, and is really ingenious. I admittedly don't know much about art (I'm kicking myself now for never taking an art history class during my time at NU), but I've been to The Block several times over the years working there, and I'm ashamed I never went as an undergrad. Plus, hello, it's free. Always. Super happy to support them and cannot wait for their next exhibits. In the meantime, I have a hot date with Blake at least 2-3 times more before it closes, including some of the fun special events they have planned in collaboration with other parts of the university and members of the Chicago community.

Walking in, multiple people greet you at the bar (drinks are donation-based and not fancy, per se, but you can get Kirkland brand wine or a local beer, so that's fine!). My ticket's barcode refused to print, but they found my ticket quickly. The stage itself is completely overlapping with the seating. In other words, you sit onstage: it's all one level. The seats, at least when I went, are all one row deep. It is great for short people like me, because we don't have to look over people in front of us. It is also great for tall people, who don't have blocked legroom of any sort (unless you have to pull in some long limbs if the actors are close enough to you where they might trip!). There are two large, ADA-compliant bathrooms, including one within the stage/seating area! Despite being a tiny theatre without a ton of publicity, you can still see brand new plays and similar works, as well as well established plays that have been performed worldwide. There is a personal, inclusive touch here, which is great to see. It was nice that the artistic director welcomed us all before the show started and gave us information about other upcoming productions!
