The theater doesn't even look open as there is a lot of unfinished construction outside that has been there since its opening.

There is one day of the year that's been requested as a day off every year for the past seven years…read moreand it ain't my birthday and it ain't Arbor Day. It's B-Fest. Held the last weekend in January at Northwestern University B-Fest is a 24 hour bad movie marathon spanning 6pm Friday until 6pm Saturday and has shown some of the worst films of the 20th and 21st centuries. Such heyday gems as Kingdom of the Spiders and The Magnetic Monster all the way through psychedelic 60's bombs, 70's blacksploitation, 80's classics and even contemporary used diapers like Baby Geniuses II and Battlefield Earth have seen screentime. But that's only half the story, the real attraction is the MST3K-like audience participation that takes place as well as the crowned king of B-Movies, Plan 9 From Outer Space as the perennial midnight movie at the fest. Get your tickets early as it's sold out quicker and quicker every year. Show up with comfortable clothes, a pillow, a blanket, a stack of paper plates and enough lozenges to quell your inevitable laryngitis from yelling out every quip that occurs to you. It's simply put the most fun you can have without waking up the next morning to something awkward.

B-Fest is 24 hours of cinematic mayhem - if you're coming to "enjoy the movies," you might as well…read morestay home. This is all about yelling back at the screen and making your fellow festgoers laugh. B-Fest rewards thorough preparation and caffeine consumption, so do your homework and bring a toothbrush. If you love b-movies, you don't want to miss B-Fest.

That said, I did decide to donate this year, mainly because I really wanted the cute Arch jigsaw puzzle, and I designated my donation gift to go to the Block Museum. This place is a hidden gem. I am OBSESSED with William Blake...like, I own his entire poetry collection and two coffee table art books (one of which is from the current Block exhibit -- Age of Aquarius -- that I had to buy after visiting). The current exhibit is freaking brilliant. It's so well done, amazingly curated and organized, and is really ingenious. I admittedly don't know much about art (I'm kicking myself now for never taking an art history class during my time at NU), but I've been to The Block several times over the years working there, and I'm ashamed I never went as an undergrad. Plus, hello, it's free. Always. Super happy to support them and cannot wait for their next exhibits. In the meantime, I have a hot date with Blake at least 2-3 times more before it closes, including some of the fun special events they have planned in collaboration with other parts of the university and members of the Chicago community.

I was so glad to support a local theatre. It was a terrific experience…read more The best part of this theatre is indeed how tiny it is - it feels intimate and so welcoming as a result. Walking in, multiple people greet you at the bar (drinks are donation-based and not fancy, per se, but you can get Kirkland brand wine or a local beer, so that's fine!). My ticket's barcode refused to print, but they found my ticket quickly. The stage itself is completely overlapping with the seating. In other words, you sit onstage: it's all one level. The seats, at least when I went, are all one row deep. It is great for short people like me, because we don't have to look over people in front of us. It is also great for tall people, who don't have blocked legroom of any sort (unless you have to pull in some long limbs if the actors are close enough to you where they might trip!). There are two large, ADA-compliant bathrooms, including one within the stage/seating area! Despite being a tiny theatre without a ton of publicity, you can still see brand new plays and similar works, as well as well established plays that have been performed worldwide. There is a personal, inclusive touch here, which is great to see. It was nice that the artistic director welcomed us all before the show started and gave us information about other upcoming productions!
