I was so glad to support a local theatre. It was a terrific experience. The best part of this theatre is indeed how tiny it is - it feels intimate and so welcoming as a result. Walking in, multiple people greet you at the bar (drinks are donation-based and not fancy, per se, but you can get Kirkland brand wine or a local beer, so that's fine!). My ticket's barcode refused to print, but they found my ticket quickly. The stage itself is completely overlapping with the seating. In other words, you sit onstage: it's all one level. The seats, at least when I went, are all one row deep. It is great for short people like me, because we don't have to look over people in front of us. It is also great for tall people, who don't have blocked legroom of any sort (unless you have to pull in some long limbs if the actors are close enough to you where they might trip!). There are two large, ADA-compliant bathrooms, including one within the stage/seating area! Despite being a tiny theatre without a ton of publicity, you can still see brand new plays and similar works, as well as well established plays that have been performed worldwide. There is a personal, inclusive touch here, which is great to see. It was nice that the artistic director welcomed us all before the show started and gave us information about other upcoming productions! read more

Maybe I'm just not in the know, but this was my first time in a theatre set with seats on the stage. I was amazed with the actor's ability to stay focused without being distracted by us sitting so close. It was really a unique experience. I don't know what the future holds post COVID for small live theatre, but I hope this place survives. #SuportLocal read more

Bottle Fly was disappointing. If there as a plot, we never got it. We couldn't even figure out who or what the characters were supposed to be, and there was zero chemistry between the characters. Constant screaming by the actors, something that is beyond annoying in such a small space. We go to 30 or 40 plays per year, and this has to be the most disappointing play in recent memory. read more

What a cool Chicago theater experience. I came to the Redtwist Theatre on a Thursday night to see Between Riverside and Crazy. The set of the show was a surprising thing to walk into. The set was one single room comprised of a living room and kitchen, with seating around the far edges of the room. The show itself was fantastic and the proximity to the stage allowed you to see the emotions of the actors so clearly. Absolutely something you should experience while in Chicago, and a great place to take out-of-towners who love theater. No bar, but there is a vending machines at the front. The show started a few minutes late for the latecomers, but try to be on time to get some good seats. I will definitely be returning. read more

Went to see a play that a great friend was in. Loved it. Loved it. Did I say, Loved it? Redtwist Theatre has a small seating area, so it is nothing akin to going into a large cinema. I just saw "Equus" tonight at the Redtwist Theater. They have a tiny space to work with but used it very well. I appreciated the face that they set up chairs on risers so everyone can see well, plenty of leg room, and COMFY seats, too! Good seating makes for a relaxing theater experience, in my opinion. I can't really judge the company from seeing just this one show, but the production and acting in this play were good. I had no clue this little theater existed within walking distance from my home. I just got back from Redtwist and am pretty happy! Be warned that you might miss it if you walk too fast as it is tucked away as a storefront. The theater is very small, which I actually like because you get really close to the actors. It's a relaxed environment and feels cozy...which I totally mean in a good way and not a Realtor trying to pass off a 200 sq foot Gold Coast studio as "cozy". I saw "Please Say Yes" tonight with a friend and had a great time. It was a cute play, funny and raunchy, but the actors really really made that show. Even though there were only 7 people in the audience, they OWNED it. All 6 actors/actresses were really into their roles and made the experience great. I really recommend this show for the stellar acting. You all did an amazing job. Matt B is super distracting though because of his sheer man-beauty and blue eyes that pierce your soul and weaken the knees. Dude, I would totally say yes, drop a line. Show runs until November 16th, I would recommend getting your tickets now!! read more

The mission of Redtwist Theatre is "to do white hot drama, in a tiny black box, with a little red twist." Judging from shows that I have seen and a few I have had the pleasure of working on at this theatre, they succeed in their mission. Redtwist is indeed a tiny black box theatre. It holds less than 40 people. They have produced some of the best in contemporary dramatic plays. In recent seasons they have produced, "Equus" (there is a another production of this play currently running on Broadway), "Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons)", and a gender-blind version of "Glengarry Glen Ross." In the upcoming season they will produce "The Pillowman," an intense crime drama that recently premiered on Broadway, "The Goat," which premiered at The Goodman a few years ago, and "Waiting for Godot." The acting at this theatre is often stellar. Ensemble members Jacqueline Grandt and Brian Parry are both a pleasure to watch on stage. If you get the chance to see a play that either of them is in (at Redtwist of another one of Chicago's many theatre companies), do it. Many of their productions have been Jeff Recommended. In fact, their shows are Jeff Recommended well more often than they are not, and a few that have won Jeff Awards. (Jeff Awards are like the Tonys except for Chicago theatre not New York theatre.) This tells me that Redtwist Theatre is often considered by members of the Jeff Committee to be top-notch in acting, directing, and design. As I mentioned, I have worked behind the scenes on a few shows at Redtwist, but don't take that to mean I am biased toward the place. Critics for newspapers and magazines across the Chicagoland area have agreed with me. Redtwist puts up good work. They are worth checking out indeed. read more

I also saw Waiting for Godot here. The show, while obviously rather surreal, was good, I think. But I'm going to review the theatre and not the show. The space was tiiiiiiiiny. Like half the size of a black box theatre I'm used to. And very long. Nevertheless, they use this elongated space to cleverly set up a good number of seats at increasing height levels. The lobby is kinda lackluster, just a lot of chairs around a room with lots of stuff to read about their shows, but seriously, it's the size of a bedroom, what else could they have done with it? I think the redtwist theatre is another example of a theatre which is doing admirable work with a very small space. Did I mention it was small? Kudos to you all, and keep up the good work. read more

This theatre is very very small, making it a very unique experience. I have seen two productions there (Bug and That Face) which are both still playing. The acting is good, especially in BUG. THAT FACE was also good but maybe a tad over-acted. But the entire experience as a whole is phenomenal: great atmosphere, location, and pricing. This is a great thing to do if you and your significant other are sitting there saying "what can we do tonight?" They usually don't sell out until the night of and it is a very intriguing and unique experience. You won't be disappointed! read more

Redtwist Theater is a quaint, wonderfully located theater in the History Bryn Mawr district. I was fortunate enough to see a production of "Waiting for Godot." This play is a difficult task to accept, but they did a wonderful rendition. One perk is that they partner with three restaurants in the area to offer discounted meals before the shows. The small, uncrowded atmosphere leads to an undistracted viewing. The administration of the theater are extremely kind and easy to talk to. About the play: The actors all did a fantastic job. Exploiting the subtle nuances that Beckett had in mind, as well as adding a nice small stage appeal. Each member was appropriately cast. The upcoming season looks to be promising. The prices are reasonable as well, so if you're looking for an inexpensive, entertaining, and fulfilling night of theater, the Red Twist is a great spot to choose. read more

Have seen 2 plays here in the past 4 years (Bug and 3 Hotels). Both were very well produced and acted. Seating for about 45 for Bug, less for 3 Hotels. Amazing small theater where you are a few feet from the performers. Tickets were $30.00 for Bug on a Saturday, less during the week. Street parking (metered) is convenient. read more

I attended the "Dracula" play at The Redtwist Theater on Friday night. I had been looking forward to this play all week, I am a big Halloween fan. The beginning was fine, there was an actor dressed like a zombie at the ticket counter, which made me think that this is going to be a fun group of individuals, wanting everyone to enjoy the experience. The play was O.K. but at the end of the play my friend and myself were blocked in our path by two of the actors demanding my camera and they threatened to call the police. I asked if photography was permitted when I arrived, I was told no, so I never even removed my camera from my bag. They claimed to have seen a blue light coming from our direction during the play. We were in the front row, and I was dressed up, not what you would wear to go out and do some underhanded criminal activity. Duh! so why on earth would I do something so foolish, I would not and I resent the implication. I showed them my camera and they didn't even offer an apology. I should have told them to call the police while I call my attorney. Dracula left a very bad taste left in my mouth. read more
