My car was towed from the Paterson McDonald's parking lot while I briefly stepped away to run a quick errand, fully intending to return and purchase a meal. When I got back, they were in the process of towing my vehicle--but it wasn't even hooked up yet. Despite this, the driver refused to release my car. Instead of showing any understanding or basic courtesy, they were belligerent, dismissive, and completely unwilling to listen. Their behavior was unprofessional and unnecessarily aggressive. This situation appears to be a clear violation of the New Jersey Predatory Towing Prevention Act (N.J.S.A. 56:13-7 et seq.), which mandates that a towing company must release a vehicle if the owner returns before it is fully removed, subject only to a reasonable "drop fee." I was never offered this option. I strongly encourage anyone who has had a similar experience to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs. It is very easy to file a complaint online. BDJ has been engaging in these kinds of practices for years and has already faced scrutiny and judgements from these organizations in the past. This was one of the worst and most upsetting experiences I've ever had. As soon as you leave your car at the McDonald's on 3rd Ave, they tow it immediately. The two men were extremely disrespectful and aggressive. As a woman standing there alone with two tow truck drivers, I felt very uncomfortable and intimidated. They would not answer the phone and claimed the business was "closed," forcing us to wait with no communication. They demanded cash only, gave no receipt, and refused to provide their names. They also would not allow us to remove money or personal belongings from the vehicle. The car was not even at a proper towing facility -- it was parked at what looked like an auto shop, not a legitimate towing storage location. Then he shook me down for $150 in cash promising a receipt. The driver made me leave the lot and meet him on the corner for it where he took my license and copied my personal info for a receipt he didn't end up having. I called my insurance company as my car broke down next to the highway while I had my two kids, my mom, and another child with us. They were dispatched and kept saying 15 minutes, 30 minutes and this went on until it reached nearly 2 hours. I had to call the police to be escorted safely since we were not safe at all. This is a very unethical and dishonest company. They work with New Jersey Manufacturers as a towing company. NJM provides "free" road side assistance as part of our policy. this company is located in Paterson NJ. My husband's car was in Bogota when he called for a tow to Hackensack (1.7 miles). this company charged him $150 for the tow because they were the "3rd" company NJM called and therefore we have to pay for the tow. this was not told to him before the car was on the flatbed. his car was essentially held hostage until they got their money. my husband called NJM and the dispatcher who told him he would be responsible for $75 after NJM paid their half of the bill. he was handed a charge (not itemized) for $80.25 and the driver would not release the car without payment. we are now disputing the charge with NJM and BDJ Towing. when we had AAA in the past you knew exactly what the charge would be PRIOR to the car being moved. there was a mileage grace (at least 5 miles) before the meter started ticking. DO NOT EVER let these crooks tow your car. if they show up send them away immediately. they will rob you blind. it's price gougers like this that give small business a bad name. read more
