Abusive treatment, refusal of service, and possible discrimination…read more On August 26, 2026, I brought my elderly father -- who is hard of hearing and speaks with a Latino accent -- to this Sunoco for a second-opinion inspection on his 2000 Mercedes. The dealership had repaired an air intake hose but flagged the body as heavily rusted and a possible safety concern. We wanted an independent opinion on whether the car was still safe to drive. My family has patronized this location for years. My father and I are both visibly Latino. I waited for the operator to finish paperwork and wave me forward before approaching the counter. I began politely explaining the situation. Within moments, and without provocation, he cut in with, "What's the bottom line?" He demanded specific part names. When I explained I'm not a mechanic and don't know all the terminology, he snapped, "So you're here and you don't even know what you want." I calmly asked why he was speaking to me that way. He stood up and said, "That's how I talk, that's how I grew up." I told him I was being polite and did not understand why he was yelling. He replied, "I'm not putting up with this, get out." I asked, sincerely, if it was my accent. He repeated, "Get out." I do not have a pronounced accent and had been speaking clearly. The entire exchange took under a minute. As it ended, a tall blonde woman entered and initiated a friendly conversation with my father about his Georgetown University cap. In the same moments the operator was ordering us out, he called her forward -- "You're ready, come up" -- and began serving her. Within one minute, two visibly Latino customers were refused service and ordered out, while the white customer who arrived immediately behind them was welcomed and served. A family member who grew up locally has separately described similar treatment at this location, suggesting the conduct may not be isolated. I RECOMMEND FINDING ANOTHER PLACE FOR SERVICE.

Well, today I picked up my not-so-recent Lexus, which needed a new front "under bumper" shield that was dragging, and removal of white scrapes on three corners of the car. Dave advised there was no point in replacing the bumper shield, which would have cost $1200 plus. Instead he wired it back up securely, advising it would most likely do the job..."no point spending that kind of money on this". I thanked him, asked for the bill for that labor and the touch-up painting...he waved it off and said "no charge for it...you can give a tip Bobby (who did the painting)", which of course I gladly did. WHAT???!!! WHO DOES THIS???? What an over-the-top wonderful culture and committed to customer service exists here. What a blessing to have found this establishment. HIGHLY recommend! The level of service provided by Neighborhood Roadside Assistance was night and…read moreday. Long story short, I live in Manhattan and needed a battery replacement. I had scheduled an appointment with another mobile mechanic service provider who did not show or respond to any messages. In a panic (because my car was completely dead and parked in front of a fire hydrant!), I Google searched while sitting in my car and contacted Neighborhood Roadside Assistance. The dispatcher there consulted with her team and said they could have someone out within the hour. About 10 minutes later, I received a call from their mechanic, Mitch, who said he was coming from New Jersey and should be there in 35-40 minutes. Once Mitch arrived, he saw that one of my battery terminals was badly corroded and asked if I knew of a parts store nearby. I did not, so he Googled some locations and we drove around to two different shops trying to get a replacement part! Unfortunately we could not find the right part locally, so he replaced the battery with the existing part but offered to pick one up in New Jersey and come back to replace it! Could not have asked for better service, especially in NYC. Neighborhood Roadside Assistance will be my go-to for any future needs.
