But the staff was very sweet and friendly so that all matters and handled the rush like pros. So got an Italian combo, pasta salad and a cookie type dessert. Although funny enough they thought by mistake I wanted 4 pounds pasta salad and am like laughing no 1/4 pounds not 4 pounds, got a good laugh out the mix up. I love pasta salad and their was good, but 4 pounds nah am good. My sandwich was delicious, and I love how soft the bread was. For cookie thing, I enjoyed it. Had a sliced toasted chicken sandwich on a roll with lettuce, tomato and mayo. My dining companion had the Italian on a roll-his favorite from this spot. Sandwich was very good albeit messy. The roll was soft but chewy, so everything kept sliding out. Good thing my friend didn't care that I was a complete slob. It's designed for mostly takeout but they do have a few tables. After a morning of fishing on the outskirts of Poughkeepsie NY, three of us stopped here to order lunch. I had a hot dog (5 star) and a turkey with provolone, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a hard roll. Pots & Pans had a turkey, swiss, tomato, lettuce, and mayo on a wedge (AKA a hero, sub, grinder). True to form, he was only able to eat half. Artie the Plumber also had a sandwich on a hard roll. D & L's observes all the health protocols. All employees wear masks and gloves; patrons are also required to wear masks. No indoor seating allowed, but we were able to score the 3 outdoor tables. The sandwiches were all overstuffed, although the bread was a bit doughy. As mentioned earlier, the hot dog was delicious...Boars Head with really excellent spicy mustard (you can get yellow if you want) and homemade pushcart style onions, also very excellent. Although we didn't indulge this time, their baked goods are incredible. The owner is a grad of the Culinary Institute of America. They do a great job moving the line. Don't know whats going on here lately. Been going here for years. Food was reliably great - service was excellent. NOT NOW. The last couple of times have been a disappointment - flagging quality. This time was the final straw. I didn't recognize the short, buzz cut, stubby guy behind the counter - but he's in the wrong business - rude, nasty - basically told the customer next to me to f off when they ask as very straight forward question. I shrugged it off at first. Then, dealing with the same guy, I simply asked about bread options and got identical attitude. (To top it off, it was incredibly bland - nothing like what I used to get from here) i'd be nervous what they're doing behind the scenes if they have that much contempt for their customers. We live in the area and have been going to B&L since we moved here, about 14 years ago. Everyone is very nice. The food is always fresh. Service is quick. Prices are fair. They also do nice party platters. They haven't had them available during COVID, but normally, the have a variety of fresh, small breads in the morning that are awesome, like banana chocolate chip, zucchini, and several with cheese filling that are amazing. The soups are also great - they tend to sell out early! We come here at least once a week and we've never had anyone be unfriendly in the least. Regarding some of the bad reviews, I don't think you get to pan a place because they only take cash, nor do you just go assume they aren't paying taxes. It's fair to make a comment that they don't take cash or to ask that they consider credit cards, but to give them one star is really off base-- it says a lot more about the reviewer than about the location. They are not the only place in the area that is cash only. This is a small community with a lot of seasonal business. B&L has reasonable prices. They don't accept tips. Yes, they have an ATM that charges a fee, as do most ATMs. I think they are allowed to make some money. read more

Normally this place is pretty good. Except for today. I called to order ahead so I could pick up my dinner before work. The man that answered the phone was rude and gruff. I ordered a chicken cutlet on a roll with roasted red peppers and mozzarella. I also asked for a little Mayo. Well this was a really disgusting sandwich. First of all it was cold. The mozzarella was not melted. Second of all there must've been at least a cup of mayonnaise on the sandwich. I tried scraping as much as I could off, but he chose to mix the roasted peppers with the mayonnaise, so it was blobbed together. Who does this? I am surprised this older man who took my order hasn't been called out before. I'll think twice before ordering from them again. Oh I forgot to add they don't take debit/credit cards. It's 2021! The staff of B & L have become like family to me. The consistent hospitality and delicious high quality food is hard to find now a days. I stop there every morning for the coffee of the day - Simply Sinful and Truly Scrumptious are my favorite flavors. I also want to mention that they have the best Bacon, Egg and Cheeses around. This deli is a favorite spot for the local camp staff to hit during time off. It can get kind of crowded, but the employees are always pleasant and helpful. The food is quite good, and they have a great selection of choices. The bakery counter is well stocked with a variety of yummy treats, and is always fresh. She called me "sweetheart" and condescended to me the entire conversation; her phone etiquette was quite nonexistent. Then when I got there, this new-looking business did not accept a credit card! In 2016! But they have an ATM, so you can get charged to take your own money out to pay them. I'm assuming the same rude lady was the one that, when I arrived to pick up my order, yelled over the counter "no credit cards, sweetheart!" Absolutely love the food at this deli. Living in Pennsylvania but originally being from NY, I miss delis. The roast beef heroes and all sandwiches for that matter, are always great at B&L. The cold cuts are always piled high and the veggies are fresh. Getting breakfast at B&L is very reasonable money-wise, and delicious. They definitely make some really great sandwiches. And they carry my favorite Bear Mountain Roasters coffee! They make great hot food and they cater! Plus they have some yummy pastries, what's not to love! Back in the day when I was new to the area, I felt like they paid more attention to the locals, but the food was fabulous so I didn't really care -- however, we've gotten to know most of them and they are really nice people, so maybe I was wrong or maybe I'm a local now too. Super sandwiches, and a nice sides case (potato salad, grilled veggies etc that always looks freshly made and appetizing.) Their assortment of biscotti- well it's hard to choose which is the best so I usually am compelled to buy an assortment to enjoy at home. Yum!
