I've eaten plenty of the contenders around Putnam and Westchester, and I'm sure somebody reading this is already preparing an argument for their favorite. Keep it. I'll probably just head back to B&L. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Cash only? Hate it. The hours? Occasionally maddening. The wait when everyone else apparently has the same idea? Been there. And you know what? Five stars anyway. Because this is the deli in my town, and when it comes to the thing that actually matters--making a great sandwich--B&L crushes it. Walk in and look at the specials board before you do anything else. That's usually where the fun starts. Otherwise, pick your preferred variation of meat, cheese, bread, peppers, cutlets, dressing, gravy, whatever ridiculous combination you're craving and let them handle the rest. Portions are right, ingredients are right, and I've ordered enough food from this place to stop wondering whether they're going to get it right. And then there's the catering. Forget about it. Parents' anniversary? B&L. Kid's birthday? B&L. Family gathering where I need trays of food and absolutely do not want to explain to everyone why I experimented with somewhere new? B&L. I've trusted them with enough events at this point that catering isn't really a decision anymore. I've never been proven wrong. There are slicker delis. There are places with longer hours. There are places where you can tap a credit card, order instantly and be halfway home before B&L finishes your sandwich. Good for them. I'll wait. Every town deserves one place its locals are irrationally defensive about. B&L is mine. It's convenient when it isn't inconvenient, old-school in both the charming and occasionally annoying ways, and still the deli I measure the others against. If B&L ever goes public, I'm buying stock. Until then, I'll take another sandwich.

This is one of those spots you hope no one sleeps on because it's too good to stay a secret. I stopped in during my break since I didn't pack lunch and figured a deli sub would do the trick. A quick Yelp search showed an almost perfect rating, which seemed wild at first, but after eating here I get it. I walked in and saw the owner in a chef's coat, his staff in theirs, cooking and taking orders right in front of you. The setup felt like an open-air kitchen that still fully embraced being a deli. They even have an "ocky way" sandwich section, plus regular hot and cold sandwiches on a sub or a roll. Drinks and chips you don't see everywhere. The variety and quality genuinely impressed me. The owner was super friendly, and I ordered a honey turkey chopped cheese-style sandwich cold. Mayo, lettuce, turkey, American cheese, salt, pepper, vinegar, all chopped together and stuffed into a hero. It came out to twelve bucks. The menu has range. There's a salad bar, beef patties, and the place smelled incredible. I was already planning my next order before I even left. I took my sandwich back to work, sat down on break, and the first bite was an explosion of flavor. The sweetness of the honey turkey, the creamy mayo, the hit of vinegar, everything came together perfectly. I ate half and saved the other half for Jo because it was that good. This is officially my new lunch spot when I'm working in the area. Five out of five stars.
