Azteca's Mexican Cuisine Wife and I arrived early for dinner on a Monday. We werent terribly hungry so we split the ribeye and shrimp. It was excellent. Our philosophy is that if a restaurant, any restaurant in South Louisiana cant cook shrimp well, they should take it off the damn menu. Aztecas can keep shrimp on the menu, it was delicious, fresh tasting and not over-cooked. The steak was flavorful, nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly. The steak and shrimp came with a half grilled onion with a cheese sauce on top, damn damn good. Ill come back just for the grilled onion. The food was decent but the customer service was terrible. The restaurant is understaffed and the workers there are very negative. One waitress in particularly rude. She was upset all night about being understaffed. She was very unprofessional and I hope she loses her job because no one deserves to be treated like our party was treated. She threw our debit cards at us, claimed we didn't pay for some of our food but didn't put it on our checks after we told her what we all had several times. We waited over 45 minutes to get our checks and that was after being served cold food that we waited a long time for. I will never go back to this restaurant. read more

This is the Mexican food place I've been looking for here in Baton Rouge. The fish tacos were fantastic, the grilled steak was delicious. Alcohol was a bit pricy, but the drinks were strong too, so it balances out. I'll certainly be back for more. read more

Azteca's is a very cool place. One of the nicest looking Mex places I've been to... beautiful decor, granite bar, lots of wood... and about the nicest bathrooms I've seen in any restaurant lately. Their chips and sauce are killer, as are their margaritas. For being a restaurant that bases its food on a hot climate, this place sure is cold! Freezing even (heaven's to Murgatroid). Rob always gets the burger and loves it. Robby always gets the steak soft tacos and loves it. I try to mix it up. Last time was the chimichanga with the cheese sauce on the side. Pretty good. I like that they actually put a little ranchero sauce or something inside with the chicken, instead of just plain 'ol chicken and nothing else (I'm looking at you La Carreta). Although we didn't come in for dinner, the drinks (margaritas) and the salsa (served with FRESH chips!) were excellent and the service was outstanding. I am really looking forward to coming in for dinner soon. It is in a convenient location for the downtown lunch crowd and a little off the beaten path for dinner which enhances its appeal as far as I am concerned. 4 stars cause I never ever give 5. My first thought was the salsa is pretty good these chips are pretty good. I thought I would order something traditional like chicken and beef enchiladas maybe. But for a few dollars more I could get seafood enchiladas. And there was also a seafood medley. I decided on the medley. seafood Enchilada, chimichanga and 4 grilled shrimp. I started on the enchilada it looked best. I thought it was really good. I moved to the chimichanga I thought it was better. I moved to the grilled shrimp with onions and peppers it was best. I was not expecting this. I am on business travel. I could come back here again, but I have to try some of the other restaurants. Can anything beat this? I'll post the dish to images. read more

Given the limited options in the immediate area, I feel compelled to regard Aztecas as a solid choice. I came with a friend, and we both had the garlic shrimp. I drank a couple of beers (bottled, Mexican, decent, middle-of-the-road) with dinner; my friend knocked back two margaritas. Before the main dishes came out, we were served a basket of chips (some of them colored for extra excitement) and a large quantity of industrial salsa. Everything was A-OK, especially with the alcohol. My meal earned me valuable MileagePlus Dining points. Restaurants that sign up for this program tend not to be fully booked, all the time. I ordered the steak fajita chimichanga and I must say it was pretty good and a decent size but if I had to comment on something it would be the rice and beans which are both served with it. The rice was a little dry and underseasoned, if seasoned at all and the same goes toward the beans since they weren't very pleasant. The salsa was OK, sweet and a tad spicy no complaints really on that but I do wish they would season their chips seeing how they were plain. read more

Amazing chimichanga! I ordered the steak fajita chimi which comes smothered in chili with rice and beens as the side. The rice was ok. The beens were great and the chimi was fantastic. The restaurant atmosphere was pretty modern and not traditionally Mexican. I was there on a Tuesday evening around 5:30pm. There was one other customer at the bar and maybe a couple of occupied tables. The bartender was friendly and offered a good beer recommendation when asked. Seems like a very small place to eat...the chips aren't very flavorful. I'm the only person in the restaurant at 4:00 pm on a Thursday afternoon which may say something about the place. I ordered the carne asada which is supposed to be a ribeye with cheese and grilled onions, peppers, etc on top and have two cheese enchiladas with a chipotle cream sauce on top. What I received was not ribeye at all (just cheap cuts of poorly cooked steak), a pile of grilled onions essentially beside it, and a mush of cheese and soggy tortilla covered with who knows what. I explicitly asked for the topping on the side so that the enchilada wouldn't be mush and not only was it still on, it was a different topping than advertised that I didn't like. My girlfriend got the steak and shrimp, which also came with a ribeye but she actually got ribeye. So they have it, I guess they changed what their "carne asada" comes with from what they have posted on waitr and just didn't change it. This is all bad and it's a $25 entree... I've been here twice before and really liked it, but I don't think I'll come back after this it's that bad. read more

The margaritas were so good. Perfect mix- not too sweet and not overpowering. Service was excellent, casual and timely. Shrimp wrapped with bacon were so good and the Chile pepper stuffed with mushrooms and cheese wrapped with a skirt skate was different and tasty. I went here for lunch today 10/03/15 and it was my first visit here. Upon entering it was pretty dead for a Saturday lunch and very quiet. The hostess was nice. Our server was very quiet and didn't seem to understand us very well. But he was nice. We got queso with and without ground beef and it was mediocre and a little runny. My niece got the kids cheese quesadilla and I got ground beef tacos both were edible but a little bland to me. All in all it was a decent lunch but nothing special about it that would make me want to go back. As always though I enjoy trying new places so I don't regret going. read more

First time here & the food was great. We both enjoyed our entrees. We went on a Wednesday for lunch. But our service was definitely a drawback to the experience. His closing line while giving us our checks was "oh I don't know if you guys knew but we do have $4 margaritas on Wednesday's, so come check us out next Wednesday". Now that's just cheap. it was weird that he didn't start off the service with the Wednesday specials, as we had showed interest in getting margaritas. Food was 7.5/10. Waiter was very nice but service was a bit slow at first. Made a reservation ahead of time and let them know it was for a birthday, and our table let them know it was my friend's birthday several times, and at the end we still had to ask them to do a dessert for her. Overall it's one of the few reasonably priced places downtown so I'm thankful for that. We will go back next time we are downtown. read more

I was out with friends, one of which was really hungry. I decided to order food to go, because I wasn't hungry at that time. I ordered the queso with shrimp and crawfish and the avocado salad. I should have asked for the dressing to be placed on the side, because most of it leaked out between leaving and getting home. The queso was excellent, I think i'll get it with out the shrimp/crawfish next time. The salad wasn't my thing, but I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't tried it, so that's not their fault. Ordered the grande burrito through MajorMenus for lunch. I was shocked at how big this burrito was! I could only eat half... and that's all I wanted to eat. I barely got through that much. There was little to no flavor. There was no seasoning except for black pepper and there was a TON of it. Enough of it to leave an aftertaste in my mouth and cause me to caution other coworkers who were sensitive to pepper. I wasn't impressed at all. I'd probably order from them again, but nothing with ground beef. Hopefully all of the food isn't like this. read more

I am a local Baton Rouge resident and the grease trap that expels smoke and grease onto Main Street is shameful. The grease drips directly in front of my home. I have complained many times and the management of the establishment has taken absolutely zero action. If you are an advocate of downtown Baton Rouge boycott this restaurant until the owners take action and resolve this issue. I'd give it lower if it wasn't for the food and the wonder hostess (edit: Taylor). The young lady who greeted us was incredibly polite and very excited to see us walk in (as we've been here plenty times). We sat and we're ignored for awhile after ordering our drinks. There was a gentleman, bald headed, (edit: Aaron) who was bossing everyone around, but when I asked if he was the manager, alas, he was not. Our server/the bartender (edit: Brandon) was vocally saying he could only handle so many tables and the bar. We asked the gentleman who was bossing everyone around if we could get some service and he snapped back at us. He told us that they were going in order. (We were the first people in the restaurant). We asked if we could get some water and he responded back rudely that our server was going in the back to get our water now. Meanwhile our poor server was taking care of the bar, 2 tables, and took at least 2 to-go orders while we were waiting to place our order. We listened to the bald headed gentleman complain about our table his whole way down the hallway. Meanwhile our server has been great, the food is always awesome. Trying to let this one gentleman ruin our opinion of Azteca. As someone who managers myself, I would NEVER speak to a customer the way this gentleman spoke to my parents and guests. This is a great example of how a place that SHOULD NOT be highly rated... IS DECENTLY RATED. I got take out which took entirely longer than it should have. They didn't have my order together when I was there to pick it up. In addition the servers were sitting around trash talking other members of the staff. So professional! So I went home and the salsa tasted "off". Like it had gone bad. I didn't touch it after my first bite. I ordered a simple quesadilla. Both the tortillas were grossly soggy and the vegetables were almost raw. I picked it apart and gave most of it to my dog. I never knew someone could ruin Mexican food like that. God, and I love Mexican food. read more
