The restaurant is older. It was clean and maintained well, but it's seen its better days. This place is not festive so don't look for bright colors and Mexican decor. The food was ok. The carnitas were a little on the dry side which is weird bc it is a high fat food. I think my waitress was great! She made sure to tend to my needs. I don't think I'll return. I'm only here on business every now and again and I'd rather go somewhere with established high quality meals. I would visit this place again if I lived here. I want to try their quesobirria. I was in town for a nearby conference and prepared to dine elsewhere. Ran in to some colleagues that mentioned they were going out for Mexican food. Decided to be a joiner. Our table of 7 was seated immediately on a Monday night. The waitress was pleasant and patient regarding our need for four separate checks. The noise level was reasonable and conducive to conversation. I ordered two entrees instead of an appetizer and an entree. I preferred the birria tacos over the chile rellenos but both were solid. I'm spoiled because I live near a lot of exceptional Mexican restaurants. This didn't live up to those but it did provide our group tasty food and a comfortable place to hang out. Would certainly consider returning next time we're in town. read more

It's not that the service was bad, this review is really about the food, it's just not really good. It's not fresh, it taste like cheese and sauces are used to cover subpar food, there's a lack of flavor, the salsa taste like it came out of canned tomato (Tostitos makes better salsa), it's more Tex Mex and not Mexican as indicated in the name... but I am also mindful that the next best thing around here is Taco Bell so it's on par with that... However, if you are a college student and looking for options outside the school cafeteria, I suspect this would be a nice change. read more

Very friendly service. We were there on an extremely busy night and staff was very attentive even though it took longer than normal for our food. Very delicious vegetarian burrito. It was no problem getting it vegan (left off cheese and sour cream) and it did not need the dairy at all! Great flavors from mushrooms, beans, and other vegetables in sauce. I came here last year for dinner. This place has been open since 2009 when I was an undergraduate student at SUNY Oswego. Coming back ten years later was a nice memory. I enjoyed the food and the drinks. The service was good and the margaritas were also good. It definitely brought back so many memories. The food was good and it reminded me of my time in Oswego. I remember the margaritas were really good. This is always my first stop when I am back in town. I am happy this place is still open and the food remains good. The prices did go up but it was still considerably cheap considered to prices in New York City. I got the fajitas and the amount of food given was enough to be shared. read more

We came here to celebrate my brother's graduation for SUNY Oswego (congratulations class of 2023). We were excited as it is one of my brothers favorite Mexican places away from home where we have a lot of really great Mexican food places. The food was just okay, but doesn't warrant a 1 star review. The service however was absolutely terrible and disrespectful. To start, we were a party of 5 and were walked to a 6 top table surrounded def by booths made for 4 people. As we were taking our seats, one of the managers or head person said that they are saving the tables for larger parties and that we would have to sit at a booth with a chair at the end. It was empty with only one other group of 3 at a booth. We were unhappy by this but figured whatever-we are celebrating. Next, we had two waiters stop by our table to tell us our waiter was running late and offered us drinks. We understood our waiter was late, but found this to be another point of unprofessionalism we faced. They did get us our drinks in the meantime and we truly thought this may have been a turning point for us. We were sadly mistaken. As our waiter arrived we watched another party of five seated at the 6-top table we originally should have been seated at. It was frustrating and disrespectful especially since once we got our food we struggled to fit our plates and eat comfortably at the table. Finally when the food came, the portions were very small and on one of the plates almost non existent. We asked for more just for the one dish and we're not only ignored, but not acknowledged. The waiter continued to ask "Is everything okay?" And never acknowledged the complaint we had. The salsa is not what I was used to. But it was decent... if you like the taste of tomato. Chips were yummy. Everyone be liked the food (nachos, enchiladas, fish tacos, and shrimp tacos). My wife and I, along with our kids, have eaten at Azteca for over 10 years, several times a year. It is our favorite Mexican food place this side of Albuquerque (where we lived for 10 years). The food has been consistently good and the staff friendly and attentive. Maybe it doesn't suite everyone, but this is the best Mexican food we have eaten since leaving New Mexico in 2002. Two Mexican sisters own and operate this place. Your money is well spent here. We gladly support this local Oswego business. read more

At first look, it doesn't appear to be anything special. It's next to a second hand store and doesn't have a ton of curb appeal. However, on the inside it appears to be clean and pretty similar to any other Mexican restaurant. I've been here twice, both times it was during COVID, so I can't speak to how operations normally are. But both times we were there, service was prompt and attentive. We did go in august, right near move in weekend for the college, so we did have to wait a while. No problem, we can be patient. Because of COVID restrictions, we just put our name and phone number down and got a call when our table was ready. I got chicken quesadillas, my boyfriend got a chicken and chorizo dish. The food came quickly once we ordered. I thought everything was delicious! And the food was consistently delicious both times, even though the second time were there they were fairly busy. looked for a good Mexican restaurant and found Azteca in Oswego. This is a college community so figured had to be good for the business to survive. Today's specials had 4 street tacos with chicken, chorizo, beef or al pastor pork. Neighboring table had that and were very pleased. I chose the Chicken Enchiladas Paisas which had a very nice green sauce. I like my food very hot (heat not spice) I told the waiter and he made sure it happen. Menu offers gluten sensitive and vegan options. Their menu is extensive and not the same old fair. Chicken in my dish was very fresh and full flavored. Their guacamole salad was the perfect compliment. I arrived for late lunch, but soon the tables began filling with repeat customers. The Staff greeted them warmly as if they were family. Wait staff is very accommodating. The music in the restaurant is nice but not too loud. Adds to the ambience without overwhelming table conversation. Good size restaurant, tables for large parties or booths for more private dining experience. Full bar with table service available is separated by half wall good for noise and crowd control. The service was really great. But unfortunately we found a hair in the salsa and a twist tie in the pico/taco? We weren't sure. I just didn't eat my food. They were kind enough to replace my daughter's meal. But the owner had the waitress tell us that they didn't know how the twist tie got in my daughters food because they don't use those there. (The hair and the portion of the twist tie were provided. We were not trying to get free food or scam or whatever he assumed we were doing. Was visiting from DC to see my pregnant daughter and had a terrible experience. We had four in our party and was seated in the left seating area. After sitting for 15-20 minutes without the waiter taking our order, I decided to leave. This is when things got interesting. I wanted to discuss this issue with the manager who instead of taking responsibility, thought it was a humorous situation. I'm African-american and at this point it was obvious that's what the poor service was about. I pulled out my phone to record the managers behavior and she grabbed my hands over my phone. The waiter then rushed me and knocked the phone out of my hand. This was assault, plain and simple. I'm a 6'4 African-american and if I put my hands on anyone in Oswego, my freedom and or life would be in jeopardy. The police were called and even though I explained the situation with witnesses, they refused to do anything. This review is to help people of color who might visit Oswego and be tempted to visit this 'environment'. Find another, report any racism and this should serve as documentation if someone of color is harassed by the police if they report assault. This restaurant is TexMex (not Mexican) with edible food. Nothing particularly interesting, but nothing terrible either. Like a moderate upgrade to Taco Bell. The cheese enchiladas reminded me of the frozen Amy's kitchen enchiladas you can buy from the grocery store for half the price. I appreciate that they have a separate menu section for vegetarian options and give white rice that doesn't have chicken stock or bullion. But I likely won't order from here again. read more

guess who it is... i'm back and at Azteca . i haven't been here since the last time i went and literally nothing has changed. i had high hopes for this place considering it's the only Mexican spot in oswego and they have set the bar so low. yes they have great margaritas the rest is just so bad and the service makes it so much worse. our waiter was rude upon arrival, was not trained well whatsoever, and wouldn't check up on us (a party of 8) every half an hour? they also clearly don't take food allergy seriously whatsoever either, considering my friend is allergic to guac (made it clear to our waiter) and when she received her food they made it with guac in it! not a surprise she wanted. this was just such a big disappointment DO BETTER. and a refill on chips isn't free it's like $3 extra?? horrible atrocious DISAPPOINTMENT. read more

I've only been a few times but all have been pretty nice outings. The most recent excursion I had ordered flautas and some orangejuice. The orange juice was delivered to me in two kid sized bottles which was fine. I do wish that they at least poured a glass full and gave me the one that wasn't filled. Or just offered me a cup for the juice. The flautas were simply amazing! They come as two fried taquitos (1 beef tips, 1 chicken), so four taquitos in total. It was served on the edges of my plate with a centerpiece compromises of lettuce, sour cream, and a tomato slice. On the side it came with some rice. Originally there would also be beans and guacamole which I opted out of. And the pricing was pretty affordable. My meal only cost $10 and for the portions I received I thought it was well worth it. Next time I hope that my drinks come to me in an actual cup. Aside from that I will still look forward to my next lunch date at this restaurant. read more

Had high hopes for this restaurant.. upon entering, it smelled of an old frat house. I asked to sit at the bar as I was dining solo. When I reached the bar, I could see the bar was sticky from the natural light reflecting off the uneven surface. I said, ok, sit in the restaurant area. I did so and ordered a margarita and cheese dip, I was there so I gave it a shot. Complimentary salsa was reminiscent of pasta sauce and the cheese dip was quite runny. I am literally drooling thinking about reviewing this place! I am not from the Oswego area, but I can't wait until I have to go back so that I can nom on some more Azteca!! First, I will start with the negative. The absolute biggest issue is that the margarita tasted like a mixer. It was superrr light on the tequila, too! But they were like $4 or something super cheap, so I can't complain TOOOOO much about it! Now, the delicious, delicious chorizo!! I ordered the El Sinaloense and ohhhh myyy was it good! I'm a really huge chorizo fan, and I absolutely loved Azteca's chorizo! It was pretty salty, but it was exactly what I needed after having a couple beers at The Cellar. My coworkers also loved their dishes - but to be honest, I have no idea what they ordered because I was so involved with my chorizo! The chips and salsa were very good as well.
