We booked ahead of time, and my only suggestion was to book 1/2 hour ahead of when you expect as the road going up to the lake had a few trucks towing boats so we were about 10 minutes late. We did not rent a dry bag, as we did not feel we needed it, also the kayak had a little hatch to stow a phone to key things dry.

Google gave us a number of options but we chose Cinda Howard and Flyfish Arizona and Beyond because she guides in the White Mountains of AZ where we love spending time outdoors. Boy did we make the right choice! Cinda is personable, patient, funny and more importantly, one of the top casting instructors in the U.S. We went to a private pond to learn and by the end of the day we were overhead, side and roll casting like we knew what we were doing. We caught six beautiful Rainbows, enjoyed the scenery, the lunch she provided and the company. She offered to take us to a nearby stream in the afternoon but we decided to stay at the pond and hone our skills. He gave us all a board, paddle, and life jacket and all the equipment was new and in awesome shape. The whole experience was fun from beginning to end! Gary had all of us laughing when giving us instructions and he made sure everyone felt comfortable. We took about 20 teenagers from our church youth group. With such a large group of first-time paddle boarders, we couldn't have asked for a better instructor! I could tell Gary knows the river very well, which made a big difference. The good: very easy to rent a kayak; I arrived 15 minutes early and they were fine with me starting…read moreearly. I rented for 1 hour. The price, $23, is very reasonable considering that a one day pass to go on Tempe Town Lake is $10. I am an experienced kayaker so brought my own kayaking clothes, PFD, dry bags, paddle, and cart. Moving the kayak from the store to the water was easy. The bad: the kayak was very slow , tracking was marginal,, and it handled a light chop poorly. My time was almost up and I was heading back to the dock when I realized I was sinking. My PFD kept me safe but my paddle leash, secured to my seat strap, came loose. The strap had unhooked from the gunnel. So there I was floating in the water with my paddle while the kayak floated away. I was able to swim to a nearby dock and a young man pulled me out. Then he used a life ring on a rope to pull in the kayak. My deepest gratitude goes out to him. The guy at Northshore said I might have taken a kid's kayak but their website makes no mention of this option and there were no signs on the rack. Except for asking if I was ok, Northshore has been completely unhelpful.
