Bartender was very nice and friendly Rating 1-5 5 stars to the Crispy chorizo guacamole 3.5 Birria tacos 3 shrimp wrapped with bacon 3 for the drink It's a nice cozy local spot. Parking was a little different especially with all the snow. It was nice to see the bartender (possible owner) talking to his customers whom look like regulars there. Overall a good experience
Pretty good spot! It's really dark in here, but the ambiance is nice for a date night. A friend and I were feeling like getting ceviche, so we came here. The ceviche mixto was a passion fruit based one which is different than the lime base I'm used to. The presentation was cute, and the flavor was good! The seafood also tasted pretty fresh. I highly recommend their ceviche, and I would love to come back and try more! The carne asada was good but nothing special and I didn't eat the al pastor tacos.
I went to this place cause I took the food reviewer Turks advice.. Wowww what a disappointment.. The place is small .. I can say the staff is nice but not active and quick.. I waited 1:30 min for 3 tacos and a steak.. But the worst was the food .. the steak was sooooo toughhh not even grilled.. dry .. 29$!!!!! .. it was top round steak the cheapest cut.. also had birra tacos also dry.. with and very little flavor.. Best part was the yuca fries and guacamole.. not worth the wait and the steak was in my nightmares.. sorry Turk
Surprisingly great! Came here on the recommendation of one of my favorite local bartenders. He told me that he went to a Michelin starred Mexican restaurant, and he came here, and that he and his wife actually enjoyed Ay Guey more. High praise. My wife and I came here to celebrate our anniversary and really enjoyed ourselves. The food was good, the drinks were great, and the staff was very friendly. Here's a few things that stood out and notable. -The restaurant sits on the border of what looks feels like a not so great area and a really nice area. As my wife and I crossed the street to enter the restaurant, she was screamed at specifically about her ethnicity. -The bathrooms at the place are awkwardly located and small. I could barely close the door. The sink, located outside is so small as to barely count as a sink. -The decor is unpretentious and pleasant. -While the food was plenty good, it felt like there was extra special attention paid to the cocktails. They not only looked good, but were actually incredible. I had two different drinks that both exceeded my expectations. My wife, who doesn't drink that much, had a sangria that she described as being the best she's ever had. -The owner is incredibly nice and wonderful to chat with. I honestly can't wait to come back here and try some more menu items and for sure some more cocktails.
Picked a spot at the bar and ordered a regular margarita with a salt rim. Delicious! They have happy hour from 4-7 with certain drinks for $10. The featured cocktail the "Woodside-TEA-Rita" must have been popular because it was out of stock! For dinner I ordered the chicken tacos, but there were plenty of other options that I was interested in trying. As the pictures show, GREAT presentation and even better flavor! I had quick and attentive service. The overall ambiance was fun and festive. There were several other parties dining and another one walked in while I was there.
Don't be fooled by the looks or location, you'll be transported to a little corner of Mexico here. The food is FANTASTIC. There are dishes with familiar ingredients or names, but I promise when they're actually served, it's not your typical fare. The ceviche and grilled octopus are must haves with flavor profiles unlike what you've had elsewhere. The picaditas are so yummy and unique if you haven't explored deep into Mexican regional cuisine. And the sopa azteca is a warm freshly served delight. I've tried other dishes here before that were also delicious, but I've named my consistent favorites. As for the drinks, WOW is an understatement. The cocktails here are truly superb - both alcoholic and non-alcoholic ones. The owner and bartender Artemio is super knowledgeable in spirits and can craft you something off menu in a heartbeat if your palate so desires. Actually, Artemio is usually the main staff member on the floor, so he's clearly a hands on, do it all owner and maintains the warmest most welcoming demeanor throughout. Though tucked away off the main stretches of Woodside/Astoria, you should absolutely make the effort to visit. A must try quality Mexican restaurant!
We made the 20-minute drive from Roosevelt Island after reading the great reviews, even passing up plenty of solid options in nearby Astoria--and it was worth it. The cocktails were excellent, and the food was just as impressive. My wife and I have visited some of the best-known Mexican spots in San Francisco's Mission District, and this place holds its own in terms of quality. It has that warm, family-owned feel, frequented by locals, and the service was attentive and friendly. We'll definitely be back!
My dad & I passed by for a quick brunch over the weekend - brunch is from 12-4! We came in a bit before 4 & were able to get seated quickly! The place itself is cozy, the bartender / server was funny & made sure to make us feel welcomed! There was a huge soccer game on & he gave me the remote to the tv to put it on! (Sadly it wasn't available via cable but the gesture was much appreciated!) My dad got the short ribs torta & I ended up getting the short ribs salad! We both had 2 drinks each (I had the paloma, he had the marg - I think I prefer the marg but to each their own!) I didn't know about the birria quesadilla but will def be back to try it out!
We went on a Wednesday night and there was one more family just starting their dinner. The space is intimate and small but nicely decorated. The server was friendly and welcoming. We had the chips and salsa, suerdo tacos, and short ribs enchiladas. For drinks we had a white sangria and ginger ale. My favorite were the short ribs enchiladas and it came with rice and beans. The short ribs were tender and the enchiladas had good flavor. The rice and beans had the right amount of seasoning even my daughter ate it and she usually doesn't eat rice and beans like that. The suadero tacos were okay but could have used more seasoning. The chips and salsa were could. I like that they had their own home made tortilla chips and salsa. I would definitely go back and try their other dishes like the soups, ceviche and picaditos. Presentation was beautiful.
Came here on Sunday afternoon for brunch when I initially didn't realize they would be serving brunch. It was a happy little accident as our friend Bob Ross used to say because it allowed us to try dishes we weren't initially planning on getting. The space is colorful, with artistic touches throughout. It was surprisingly empty (especially in hindsight after the great food and service) with a father and young daughter sharing a meal. We ordered drinks but they were out of the apple La Mexicana soda and Fresh Squeezed Grapefruit juice - we get the pineapple soda and fresh squeezed OJ instead both were great choices. (The manager/owner? comped the OJ as a gesture - very kind and unexpected) We started with the Crispy Chorizo Guacamole which was fantastic and super fresh. The other half of the bowl holding delicious Chorizo that was crumbled and perfectly cooked. Freshly made tortilla chips came with this and I had to stop myself to save room for my meal. I initially wanted the short rib enchiladas, but since it was brunch I went with the short rib torta as substitute. This was served on a nicely toasted ciabatta roll (the owner said later its the only torta he serves - a little different from the usual. He doesn't like the quality of the traditional Telera rolls he find in NYC). A delicious sandwich with lots of tender short rib. Fries came with this and they were nicely done, but I didn't have too many because of the guac and chips earlier. The Huevos Rancheros were absolutely fantastic. Three sunny eggs sitting on corn tortilla, Oaxaca cheese, black beans and the star of the show - a smoky tatemada morita sauce not overly spicy with such great flavor. This is a neighborhood gem that Woodside is seemingly neglecting. This is the kind of place you want in your hood! - friendly outgoing owner, great food and drinks in a nicely decorated space. I plan on coming back soon bringing a couple of friends to check out their cerviche and get those enchiladas along with those craft cocktails.
I almost passed the restaurant, they didn't have any sign on the front of the restaurant. The establishment is not big, but it's nice cute decorations. The host/ waiter was very nice seated right away. I enjoyed the guacamole nice presentation. The chips were nice and warm. The food tasted great
Went to Ay Güey again the other day and wasn't disappointed! Food (Not pictured: chorizo guacamole + shrimp & suadero tacos) Ceviche: soooo, worth the wait! It was one of the best I've ever had! Passion Fruit juice/octopus/shrimp/Mahi Mahi/cucumber. Bruh, even the chips were Dranks: (Lisssseennn! I already told Temu that I'll come and be his drank tester) Poqito Picante: (y'all! I thought I was die since it had chili! Lol. But it was actually very refreshing: cucumber/cilantro/Mezcal instead of Gin Ginger Juice + Mezcal (super fresssshhh) And, of course, Berry Berry had to make an appearance

I was devastated with Dulce Cultura closed, but this place has filled the gap in my heart for strong, reasonably priced margaritas and incredible Mexican food. Ay Guey is tucked away on an unsuspecting side street where you would not expect to find a bomb Mexican restaurant. When I walked in around 5 pm on a Friday this place was absolutely jumping. One server was not only handling the entire (albeit small) dining room, but was also serving all the drinks for said patrons. He was truly a machine, so much so that I didn't even mind that our drinks took a minute for him to get to. We sat at the bar with him which was small but cozy. He let us know it was still happy hour, so we had our fill of the strongest $10 margaritas I've ever experienced before happy hour ended at 7 pm. Palomas, sangria, and their signature watermelon drink are also included in this happy hour deal. We kicked things off with the best nachos I've ever had. Absolutely loaded with all the toppings, crunchy and delicious. Next, I had the ceviche which was fresh and beautifully made. My date had a sad cheese quesadilla because he's vegetarian - but our server let us know that next time they can throw some veggies in there if we ask so that it's not so sad looking. Our server, despite being busy AF, was in great spirits laughing and joking with us. I would definitely come back here for the food and ambiance. 10/10. read more

I almost passed the restaurant, they didn't have any sign on the front of the restaurant. The establishment is not big, but it's nice cute decorations. I like this place. It's cozy. Its hidden in Astoria though so hopefully it gets enough business to stay afloat. I went for a Sunday brunch and the menu options all sounded delicious. There are a few items off menu which the server informed us about such as the quesbirria tacos. To start we ordered guacamole. it needed a little more flavor, salt would have been fine. Next we got the elote which was so flavorful with Chipotle mayo, Mexican sour cream, cotija cheese and tajin. For the main meal I ordered the quesbirria tacos. they were yummy and cheesy. I was definitely full from my food. As for drink, I got a passionfruit margarita which was so flavorful. When I got there with my friend, it was only the two of us. Another party came half he later and then another as we were leaving. There was a strange funky smell, which I think is due to a dirty mop. The server was very friendly, he was the only one there so doing both food service and drinks and was attentive. Good spot that I'd like to try again. read more

Just got home from dinner here and we are so happily surprised. This place is fabulous. The food was killer. We ordered the ceviche which had an amazing passionfruit sauce (that balanced the dish perfectly), shrimp tacos, Al Pastor tacos, queso fundido with chorizo, and flan. Everything was absolutely delicious. The flan reminded me of my abuela's. Really awesome spot with wonderful service. It's perfect for a date night or just evening escape. Highly recommend! Side note- margaritas were fabulous too. Mango mezcal margarita was a perfect addition. read more

Bright and colorful atmosphere. I had al pastor tacos, chicken enchilladas mole, and guacomole with chips and chorizo. Everything was delicious and the presentation with the flowers was a nice touch. The people that work there are very nice. read more

Run, don't walk to this astounding hidden gem of a Mexican restaurant tucked into a quiet street on the Astoria/Woodside border. It's almost impossible to find decent Mexican food in NYC. This place blows the roof off when it comes to flavor and quality! You must get the chips and guacamole to start. Fresh made chips and the most delicious salsa and fresh guacamole I've ever had bar none. Don't miss the short rib enchiladas! The fresh, hot churros! OMG! Actually, there's not a miss on the entire menu. Make the trip if you're not local! This place is a stand out in deliciousness and excellence! Stop in and experience this place! Each time here feels like the first time and after 1 year + it continues to get better. The food is fresh always--you can taste it--not reheated or ingredients that have been sitting out or not well stored simply delicious always. Art is so humble and so sweet and funny. He is extremely hardworking and treats his guests like they are family. The vibe in here is always chill from the music to the vibrant decor you can bet on always having a great time here. read more

We had such a delicious Mexican dinner here!! Mexican food is my FAVE and they did NOT disappoint! Here's what we had: ~Red Sangria ~Ay Peachy Guey! Bianco tequila, Pisco, Mezcal Mist, Pulque, Peach, Apry, Peach Purée, fresh lemon juice, orange bitters ~Queso fundido with short rib , Mexican cheese, pico de Gallo, avocado, and corn tortillas-This was one of the best appetizers I've ever had. For cheese lovers like myself, I cannot stress this enough, this is a MUST ORDER!! The cheese pull was immaculate. The cheese was salty, stringy, and had a nice little crust on the bottom. PERFECTION! ~Al pastor picaditas- pork marinated in achiote, pineapple salad, black beans, salsa, cilantro- Def my second fave thing we ordered! They were so crispy and the pork was so tender and went so deliciously with the pineapple. They were fantastic! ~Birria tacos- braised brisket, pickled red onion, red sauce, served with consume ~Baja fish tacos- mahi mahi, corn tortillas, chipotle aioli coleslaw, red sauce. Love the texture that the slaw provided. ~Shrimp enchiladas- green sauce, Mexican cheese, crema, queso fresco, onion - The sauce was so fresh and flavorful! Not to mention, the gorgeous presentation! ~short rib enchiladas- green sauce, Mexican cheese, crema, queso fresco, onion We absolutely can't wait to come back as I'll be dreaming about that perfect queso fundido and the picaditas! A new local spot in my neighborhood, and just WOW! Don't be afraid to walk into a place just because it's empty.... Go and support your small business, even the ones with amazing flavors and service. THE BEST Birria Tacos/Birria meat that me and my husband have had in a Mexican resturant! Flavors are out of this world... everything was so good. Drinks were bomb, and everything is affordable. The place is well put together and creates such a cute and cozy ambiance. read more

Not the best Mexican restaurant in the Astoria/Woodside area, but we did enjoy the grilled octopus and ceviche. ¡AY GÜEY! has a very low-key atmosphere and footprint near Woodside Houses and Boulevard Gardens, and by car, they were initially quite hard to find. Once in, we found plenty of searing alternatives and sat at the far end of the restaurant under a cool breeze. We were served by the manager, whose English was a little limited, and we found him quite hard to understand. All-in-all a solid dining experience. read more
