Simple. Worth the wait!! This place is a cultural taste bud journey! Wow! Insider secret is to use to wait-list feature on Yelp (go yelp!) and once you're seated, you're in for an experience. We ordered the birria tacos & the Axol Benedict and we were so pleased. The Benedict came with birria and a homemade hollandaise sauce that was rich and creamy. The birria tacos were one of the best we ever had. Next time we're getting the chilquilles which were popular and recommended. The restaurant is small, busy, but not crowded uncomfortable. I met a friend here for brunch on a Saturday. VERY BUSY! They don't take reservations, and we waited about an hour (45 minute wait minimum) and there were just two of us. We arrived at 11 am, so it was peak brunch time. We did not expect the wait to be that long. It was a very cold day, so we waited indoors. However, folks must have put their name on the list and left and waited elsewhere as we noticed folks showing up and getting seated - so so my suggestion is to arrive early, and put your name on the list. There isn't a lot of seating. That's my tip for you if you're going on a weekend! They will text you when the table is ready. Or you can join the waitlist right here! I didn't know that beforehand. Backing up just a bit - it was my first time here, and there isn't huge or visible signage from the street, so I ended up passing right by and going around the block trying to locate the building. There is street parking, and even on a busy Saturday, I found street parking easily, but I'd love some bigger signage so we can easily find it. It's got an upbeat atmosphere and cozy. Besides the very long wait, we enjoyed the food. I ordered the Breakfast tacos and my friend ordered the Childaquiles Tradicionales. I'd love to sample other things on the menu. read more

Axolotl Cafe had been getting some buzz as a new brunch place in Bay View and I finally got around to checking it out. The cafe is small and gets busy on weekends. Definitely sign up for the waitlist on the way there. There were several things on the menu I wanted to try. Chilaquiles are popular. I went with the Vegetariano bowl so I could get a side of pancakes, and I upgraded to the guyaba (guava) pancakes for a small upcharge--was also eyeing the horchata. The food was good. The over easy eggs on my bowl were perfectly runny and there were plenty of delicious breakfast potatoes underneath and a variety of vegetables. The pancakes were beautifully presented and the guava sauce was something different. The server and bartender were friendly and kept my coffee filled. Owing to the small restaurant size and the crowd they're pretty strict about seating. Several people tried to come up to the bar for a drink while they were waiting and were told it was for customers on the waitlist. That said it was nice that they kept the bar open for seating so solo patrons like me could get a seat without taking up a whole table. We stopped by on a Friday around 10 a.m and there was no wait. The cafe is fairly small, so it may be difficult to accommodate larger groups. I ordered the red chilaquiles with cecina. The chilaquiles themselves were delicious, though the meat could have used a bit more seasoning. We also tried the kids pancakes, which were super tasty and a fun treat for the kids. This place lived up to the hype! It's a regional Mexican breakfast/brunch spot open 7 days a week from 7am to 2pm, and the experience was on point. We started with a Caramel Latte and Caramel Machiato, then moved to the Chilaquiles with birria added as our starter. We chose salsa verde, and it was the right call. Yes, the chips got soggy under the salsa verde, but that didn't take away from the many layers of amazing flavors this dish delivered. Next was the house-made corned beef hash, topped with poached eggs and served over pan fried quartered mini potatoes. Again, every component was perfectly seasoned and properly cooked...another hit! We think the Horchata Pancakes was our favorite dish! I prefer savory over sweet when it comes to brunch, and I never order pancakes because they often disappoint. There are two exceptions for me: Golden Nest is Wauwatosa, and now these ridiculously delicious Horchata Pancakes! They were so incredibly fluffy and absolutely nailed the horchata flavors! You MUST try them! One thing about me is that I absolutely LOVE axolotls, so when I heard that this brunch spot opened up in Bay View, I knew I needed to come check it out. The thing I want to share about the most was the friendliness of the staff. Everyone here was so kind and checking in with us. The seating here is pretty limited, so if you're planning to come at a peak time, I highly recommend joining the waitlist. Onto the food: oh my god, this was the best breakfast chicken I have ever had! I'm not a breakfast person at all, so I always try to go for a chicken and waffle if the menu has it. This item did not disappoint! Traditionally, it's served with a side of the spicy syrup, but I substituted it for regular syrup. The hot chocolate? Wow! It was so good. The whipped cream tasted so fresh and delicious. I could've had two of these if I really wanted. Join the waitlist! It's right here on Yelp! It's a small place and a busy place and with the current winter weather waiting outside is not so much fun. We joined the waitlist while texting each other to confirm gps eta and I had a quote of 35-45 minutes wait and my drive time was 18 minutes. My friend arrived first and formally checked us in we had about a 10 minutes wait outside. The app kept showing us the update on our status in line including the group sizes ahead of us which was nice. The food was good. I'm more of a savory brunch girl but had to try the guava cakes so got a short stake to share and they actually weren't too sweet so really a perfect end to brunch. Had brunch with some family and decided to meet at Axolotl. It's a small place and there was about a 40 minute wait (it didn't take that long). The place is really cute and has a nice vibe. The staff was very pleasant. While we stood and waited, they took drink orders from us. My wife and I got a rather amazing hot drink called Guava Atole. The food was great! I had an excellent corned beef hash, which had some flair to it with peppers in it. Really good. Everybody was really happy with what they got. I am definitely going to check this place out again. An amazing addition to the Milwaukee brunch scene! Smaller than I thought it would be, so it was PACKED on a Sunday at noon. Definitely check the waitlist before walking in. If you order a hot beverage, they have the CUTEST mugs. I'm obsessed with them. I would go back just to drink out of one again. Axolotl cafe is a new breakfast/brunch cafe right on KK. The spot combines Mexico and your traditional brunch spot. It's quite small inside so expect to wait. It's decorated really cute and even has some axolotl art as well. Our server was great and even gave recommendations which I always appreciate. I got a gauva mimosa but couldn't really taste the guava but it was good. For my meal I got the Axo Bowl which was two eggs any style over birria, mexican rice, black beans, onions, fresh cilantro and pancakes. I upgraded to the horchata pancakes and they are officially my favorite in all of Milwaukee. Overall great service and food. Since it's a newer spot I've been hearing a lot of buzz about, I wanted to make sure we got there early to avoid a wait. We showed up shortly after they opened on a Sunday, and there were only a few other people, so we were seated right away. There is a good amount of seating inside, but I can see it filling up quick. Cute decor with nod to the axolotl. Everything on the menu sounded great it was hard to decide, we ended up getting the Breakfast Tacos, short stack of the Horchata Pancakes, and the Axo Burrito. The tacos were mad with homemade tortillas and all the ingredients tasted fresh and homemade. The horchata pancakes were delicious and made with their homemade rumchatta. Absolutely love this new Cafe on KK in Bay View. We came around 1:30 on a Saturday and it was about a 20 minute wait to be seated. The inside is warm and welcoming. The staff offered great suggestions and was very helpful. I tried their Carmel latte, Spicy Chick sandwich, and horchata pancakes. All of it was fantastic, but the pancakes were my favorite. They were perfectly fluffy and delicious. Service was prompt and our food came out way quicker than expected. You wouldn't think they had just opened a week ago. I went with my sister for their soft opening. The place had filled up quickly by nine so we snagged a couple seats at the bar. Service was great at the bar, my coffee cup was bottomless. I was happy my sister wanted to split breakfast so we opted for the savory curnito sandwich and the horchata pancakes. The sandwich was served on a croissant and we really liked the ham. The horchata pancakes stole the show. Our server shared that syrup is generally not needed as it covers up the flavor but it is available. Syrup was indeed not needed. How cute is this new cafe tucked into Bayview! Had a recent brunch here with a friend and enjoyed the overall experience. It's cozy in size, a handful of tables along each side of the cafe, and a bar with seating at the center. We sat at the windows for some welcomed light. Our server was very quick to take care of us. Here you'll find a taste of hispanic food & drinks. I ordered an iced latte, and my friend got a hot chocolate which came in the cutest ceramic mug and topped with whip/choco drizzle! For food I went with the Axo breakfast bowl and it was damn good. And very filling, so I took half of it home! The birra meat was so flavorful and it came topped with two eggs, plus rice, beans, onions and cilantro. Tableside hot sauce was also added by me! For the price, the axolotl toast was disappointing with minimal avocado spread. We were delighted with the food and options as well as the friendly staff throughout. I got the Molletes (Cecina) for my main after seeing them being brought out to another diner. I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I ordered them, but I enjoyed the crunchiness of the toasted bulillo rolls and the soft inside with the plentiful beans and cheese, and how fresh the pico de gallo was! I ordered it with the Cecina meat that was tasty and seasoned well, but I don't think I would have ordered it again for the price. The protein made it the most expensive item on the menu and I just don't think there was enough for what I paid. My pookie ordered the Avo'lotl Toast, a classic! The toast had some crunch to it and the eggs were nice and runny. The pico de gallo was nice and added some more acidity than what we were used to, but the corn with it was not for us. The corn was kind of dehydrated and also mushy and sticking to our teeth, so it was a bit of an odd feeling with each bite. Additionally, there didn't seem to be much salt mixed into the avocado mash, but there was some at the table for our own preference. This visit was nice and we enjoyed our options and the friendly staff that accompanied it! The space itself was also cute and though we didn't order any drinks, the jarrito mugs were awesome to look at and I think we even saw someone purchase one to take home! I kind of expected for there to be more fun drink options and could totally see there being a rotating drink menu, maybe an idea for a later time. The waitlist process was not the best experience, especially with a belligerent host. An open discussion with a customer in the middle of the restaurant was not the best experience to endure. The food was standard quality for the price they charge for it. The restaurant doesn't have its own parking, so trying to cross KK Avenue is AYOR of getting run-over. The ambiance of the restaurant is not a place to savor the food or the highly priced (bitter) coffee. There's even a sign on the tables encouraging customers not to linger any longer than needed. The noise levels inside the restaurant can easily produce a headache, therefore promoting a fast departure after paying the bill. As a positive comment: the orchid flanking the pancakes was a beautiful detail. read more

I've visited twice in the past month and am looking forward to the next visit! First, make sure you put yourself on the online waitlist on weekends!! We learned the hard way on the first visit and they had about a 45 min wait. Still worth it! The second visit, we put our party of 4 on the waitlist while getting ready and the timing worked out great. I've ordered the Axo Benedict and would highly recommend. My friend ordered the chorizo sausage biscuits and gravy and she said she would order it on her next visit too. I like to try new things so on my second visit I ordered the chicken and waffle and LOVED IT. All 3 others in the party enjoyed their meals as well. For drinks, I had an iced latte and a bloody and both were great. All in all, you'll have a great time here. Service is great and the restaurant itself is so cute. I read about this place and sent my BF and his friends there to try it. They are early birds and are thrilled about the 7am open time. He came back saying it was their new favorite place and I was filled with envy. They all loved the food. He really enjoyed the corned beef, which is his barometer go-to dish. At the earliest opportunity I suggested a visit for brunch to a friend. We went around noon and were sadly unaware of the wait list, hosted here on Yelp. So of course we waited, for about 75-80 minutes. Was it worth it? I'm happy to say that it was. I will join the wait list next time, since there is little to do around there except browse one pretentious used clothing store, but this is a good breakfast/brunch joint. When we were eventually seated our server was Simon, who was very friendly and peppy. The space is very cute and intimate. I wish it were bigger so they could seat more people and have a waiting area, but they have a nice bar, a designated coat hanging area and charming decor. I'm not sure where they would put a large group. We started with brunch cocktails - their menu has both virgin and alcoholic versions as well as numerous juice options and hot drinks. My bloody Mary was fresh and tasty and a bit spicy, but the menu should say what the accompaniments are - the big bacon dipped into it would be such a treat for a meat eater, but not so cool for a vegetarian. My friend enjoyed her boozy coffee drink. Our food came out fast. The portions were overall generous. Friend's breakfast tacos were good. Her potato side was excellent, but she wished there were more. Having tasted one, I wished she had more as well. My chilaquiles were so much better than most places. The house made chips were big and fresh. The green salsa has excellent flavor. (You can choose red or green.) The black beans were subtle, but flavorful and tasted scratch-made, not like generic canned beans. I'd ordered extra avocado on the side, since most places are stingy, but I needn't have done so. You get plenty here. The scrambled eggs (again, you choose style) were big and fluffy and yummy. You can add meat to this dish. I brought home leftovers, which BF enjoyed very much. This will certainly be a new go-to breakfast/brunch destination for us. We'd request a second Riverwest/Shorewood/Eastside location stat. So very good! read more

I saw 3 parties get turned away at the door because they didn't have reservations. The chilaquiles were delicious with the proper amount of spice. The beans were a nice flavorful addition too.
