Just moved to town just a little over a month ago and decided to check this place out. First off the owner Bart is a real kind and down to earth fella. Really nails that small town vibe. One of the Bartenders, Jennifer is a real sweet gal and she works hard to make sure everyone is taken care of. I wasn't planning to eat but the feller sitting next to me ordered a good looking burger, but I was feeling chicken so I tried the blackened chicken sandwich and by golly it was sure fantastic. The tater tots are seasoned up real well and the chicken was full of flavor, layered with bacon. The bar itself is clean, well organized, with plenty of space. The stage hosted a man with a guitar that evening and he put on quite a show. Dart board upstairs is a fine addition . This is a smaller town watering hole done right. A great place to wind down after a long work week. read more

This place should honestly count their days. It's gone so far downhill. The prices are absurd. That's not why though. We went there as a group and ordered grilled cheese from the kids menu for the little ones. The food came out maybe an hour later and it literally looked like they just put slices of cheese on bread. No grill. Nothing. The best part was when I went to the bar area to ask them to actually grill it..... a RAT ran under my feet and quickly ran behind the bar. It was unbelievable. read more

I enjoy the ambiance from the minute I enter; friendly staff, locals, etc. Cottage Grove only have a couple of 'restaurants ' not fast food, drive thru, nor another Mexican food joint. It's a legit meet up with friends, take a date venue. The menu and specials are always a thought out treat. Myself I look for a seat at the bar and order my usual Pork belly tacos, Prime Rib on Fridays or one of the fresh salads. I'm an early diner therefore, I haven't stayed long enough to listen to any of the live music. 5 stars read more

Hubby and I went on a Tuesday a little after regular dinner time. Hubby's steak was good but the rest of it was mid and expensive for what you're getting. Not much flavor to my burger at all. The salad was pretty good as it had a lot of toppings but when I asked for tomatoes, they said they didn't have tomatoes. And not just ran out for the day. They don't have tomatoes at all! That was baffling to me and quite a disappointment. Drinks were okay. But they had a large selection of liquor and I appreciated the break down of what they offered on the drink menu. The rest of the old building was very unsettling. There was only 1-2 other tables and maybe a guy at the bar at the time and the vibes felt very unnerving. Hubby went to the bathroom and said it felt super weird and creepy. It was enough to convince me to hold it until we got home. I'm sure its a cool venue when theres music and more people but this time, it didn't win me over. read more

My boyfriend, best friend and I came here. We got sat, they took our drinks, brought us our appetizer and then took our order. We sat at the table for an hour with no service and no food, we watched multiple tables with the same amount of people come in, get their food, eat and leave before someone even checked on us. After an hour we eventually got up and left. They gave us our food in boxes but when we got home (maybe a 3 min drive) everything was soggy. My steak that's supposed to be rare was most definitely not, my boyfriend burger is extremely undercooked and the french dip was soggy and cold and they didn't add the sauce or the cheese. They put my salad in the same exact container as my steak and fries so it's extremely soggy and warm. I heard good stuff about this place but unfortunately was extremely disappointed and still had to pay $80+. I will not be coming back to this place and I am extremely worried about eating this food. It's completely un-edible. read more

This is such a fun Main Street watering hole..they have live music and that wonderful old timey feel you want in a restored Main Street bar. The food is higher end pub food with a nice range of choices and prices with fun bartenders. Will most certainly be back. read more

The service was spot on and the cocktails were well made. The house salad was delicious and very well presented. The dinner however was lacking. I had the prime rib and it was overcooked and dry. The mashed potatoes were tasteless and the green beans were just ok. I know they can do better than this. Better luck next time. read more

What a pleasant surprise. We ordered a small ceasar salad, small bowl of macaroni and cheese and two pork belly tacos. Everything was amazing and delicious. The Ceasar salad had delectable house made croutons, the mac & cheese had house made tightly rolled egg noodle pasta, and the pork belly was crispy with tender meaty portions. The flavors were perfectly 5 star and the portions were generous. There was not a single taste, preparation or presentation area that was lacking. We got $$$ quality at a $ price. read more

23/11/23 Day before Thankgiving. We wanted some quick dinner and my in-laws highly recommends their clam chowder. First & foremost, service was outstanding, a great pair of hostess and bartender running the whole show. My hubby & I ordered their very scrumptious clam chowder which included 2 slices of wonderful Sourdough bread. We also love the side order of sweet potato tots. While visiting Cottage Grove we decided to walk old downtown and have a cocktail before walking around to find a good dinner place. The Ax & Fiddle was a great find! Our hostess, Abbey was amazing! She told us a little about each food item while we were waiting for our cocktails and decided on the Cornmeal Crusted Artichoke Hearts. THEY.WERE.SO.YUMMY. Its a big serving so we were glad we are splitting their Bear Burger. Perfectly cooked with great taste the tillamook sharp cheese really added to it! Part of this building & restaurant is a huge bookstore. You could literally wander through this area for hours. Awesome set up! if you are visiting Cottage Grove this is a great place for dinner and drinks. read more

Well, yes indeed I payed Axe and Fiddle a visit today and ordered up a Mushroom Swiss Burger and fries. The burger was really great and done to perfection but the fries, not so much. In my opinion they were well over done. They were so crispy they were hard to chew and had a slight burnt taste to them. There are those who might like their fries done like that but I'm not one of them at all. The place with really clean and homey and I really liked their choice of background music. Then there was the bathroom. When I walked in I was overcome with a strong smell of urine then I found that the urinal wouldn't flush. Sorry guys, that will be another gig. Dang it, I wanted to give them 5 stars but my experience today just wasn't that great. read more

We were visiting the small town of Cottage Grove and needed a place to eat. We entered Axe and Fiddle and were seated quickly and kindly. We had both a black berry Old Fashion and a Sazerac. Both were delicious but the Sazerac knocked my boots off :). Food around the table included fried pickles, BLT and a burger, sorry I don't remember which burger was ordered, and blackened shrimp and grits. Everyone enjoyed their meals and my shrimp and grits was awesome and everyone had a taste of it. The only slight criticism is that the French fries that came with the burger were a bit soggy. The fries tasted ok but could have been great with a double fry! Our servers were very nice and answered all our questions. It was a great little place and I would recommend to anyone. read more

Stopped in after the art walk (which was surprisingly fun, good job Cottage Grove. People were super fun and engaging all over) for a couple of drinks and to listen to whatever happened to play onstage. No expectations going in, and I'm glad after reading the less complimentary reviews. It's like some of these people have never been in a bar... the food was great bar food! Do not eat here if you're gluten free, but otherwise, dive in! Tasty selection of eats, someone put some love into it, and while I wouldn't call it healthy, I would call it indulgent. The drinks were poured heavy enough to be worth what we paid for them, and I liked sitting up at the bar except for it being a narrow walkway. But from the bar you can see everything and still chat folks near you up, unlike the tables that keep you kind of to your own group. You'll find comfortable seating for whatever suits you. There are tables at both ends so you don't have to be where the noise from the stage is assuming they ever have rowdier music than we had the night we went. The music we saw was a single chill dude singing nice songs, and you could hear him and still hold a conversation, so that was just what we were looking for. Service was bar service, depending slightly on how many people poured in. If you're looking for a great bar atmosphere in a lovely building, with tasty things, friendly laid back people, and solid drinks, it's a good place. If you want something bougie... probably shouldn't be in Cottage Grove at a bar. Seriously. read more

Decided to skip the fast food options and go here on our trip north. Very happy with our decision. Very comfortable pub atmosphere and great beyond pub food - you can get that if you desire. Shrimp and grits for my partner and blackened shrimp tacos for me. Creamy grits with a spicy shrimp topping was excellent. My shrimp tacos were excellent. Fresh veggies, great crema and fresh shrimp. The combo of beans, veggies, sauce and shrimp really hit the spot. Served with corn tortillas and choice of red or green sauce - I chose red. Ample portions and well prepared all around. The burgers were honestly the best burger I have ever eaten! Just enough char and a little pink on Brioche buns. Next night was Taco Tuesday and open mic. Double delight. We came to town for Buster's, which was packed, so we came here reluctantly. We left thinking this place will give Buster's as run for its money. Bacon wrapped French Toast! Fried Chicken with biscuits and gravy! I didn't think I liked gravy, or biscuits and gravy until this meal. It changed my mind. They do something magical with that gravy. It might be crack, or butter, not sure. Spicy Bloody Mary to boot! Next time we're in town, we might come here instead of Buster's. Stopped in for a concert with Pacific Roots and Perfect by Tomorrow. Was a little nervous based on some reviews here but we gad a great experience. Just great! The atmosphere is nice and the people are great! I bought a groupon for this place way back when and I finally redeemed it on the day it expired and after a friend of mine suggested this place. I like this joint. It's awesome. The bartender, Josh, and the cook, Derrick, are awesome. Two of the best guys in Oregon. My friend and I went on a quiet night. We hung out and played pool. The setup of this place is unique. There's the bar, stage, upstairs area with seats and a pool table, and then next door is a bookstore/ cafe-reading room. It was also pretty interesting to learn about the special currency they use in Cottage Grove. I didn't know about it until I saw one of the other patrons paying with funny looking money. It was really nice to get out of Eugene for a night. Also, I recommend the garlic cheese potatoes! I love garlic so it worked well! Just enjoyed this place - the flip-side (so-to-speak) of Backstage Bakery - last week. We'll definitely be back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to friends/family. Our waitress was friendly & relaxed, with just the right level of attentiveness. A band was setting up; we missed their performance but like that live music is a frequent offering. The food was great, too. We got the nachos (huge portion that was well-layered) and a steak (my husband almost didn't want to share); both were fabulous. read more

This place is so fun, good food, & freaking amazing! & if you're in Cottage Grove & the world is sleeping, & this place looks closed--it's probably not. Just walk right in lol! Beers were amazing. I love cider. I love their local brews. We had their burgers & onion rings. They have an entire library in the back! They are super community-oriented, always in the know about what's happening around them. Some of the workers here are also involved in local plays that are amazing & hilarious. Stopped in yesterday for about the 5th or 6th time. I love this place...friendly folks with great food and drink, and a fantastic atmosphere in Historic Downtown Cottage Grove. We went for an early "dinner". I had the smoked salmon chowder and a pretzel, and washed it down with a couple of nitro infused stouts. Delicious! The chowder is a "must try". I ate here for my first time the other night. I was with a group of 6 people. I ordered the salmon chowder. It was okay. My husband got the reuban with fries. He was really happy with it. The fries were really yummy. I tried and bite and liked it too! Two of our friends got the mac and cheese and the other got pork tostadas that aren't actually on the menu but were delicious. The only problem was that our food didn't come out at the same time. One mac and cheese came out after a few minutes. Then the cook worked on a to go order. The tostadas came out and then maybe 15-20 minutes later the rest of the food came out. When I go out to eat with a group of friends I kind of expect that we will eat together, at the same time. Instead my friends felt awkward. They wanted to be polite and wait for the rest of us but at the same time didn't want their food to be cold. I am excited to go back and try something else. The food was good. Maybe it was just an off night in the kitchen. read more
