As the name states, Avon Prime Meats is a purveyor of USDA prime and a few other selections, but you cannot go wrong with any of the prime cuts (and frankly, based on what I have seen at this point, the other cuts are just fine as well). So far, I've had prime NY Strips, ribeyes, picanha (top sirloin cap) and Porterhouse steaks here and all were absolutely divine. They even may have a few cuts that don't make it on the shelf but you can ask for them and they might make your day even better. This store has quite a bit more than an impressive array of butcher cuts. You'll find all sorts of meat and seafood swimming in a number of different marinades. They have deli meats, and you'll probably prefer them here to anywhere else in Avon (and really anywhere in Hartford and its surrounding cities). Are you looking for some fancy tri-colored pasta? They got that. Natalie's Juice? It's here. Elk and venison? Maybe some other exotic cuts? They got quite a few in here. They even have a decent beer selection. And I haven't even started talking about all of their prepared food which is far better than what you'll find in most high end grocery stores. In any event, along with the Fresh Market chain's Avon location, you can pretty much source all of your non-basic wants and needs at these two shops. read more

I know it's Avon, but prices here are outrageous. I was looking at the ground venison & elk, neither one had prices listed (on the product itself or anywhere around the fridge). So the counter person took them back up to the register to check the prices, they were in the $23 & $24 range for 14 ounces. That's double the price I pay for ground venison and ground elk at the Litchfield Locker, the prices there are $11.99/lb (venison) & 10.99/lb (elk) respectively. So, needless to say, I just wasn't interested in being fleeced, no thanks. I won't be returning. read more

I live in CA, so naturally I wanted to do Santa Maria Tri-Tip roasts, thinly sliced, medium rare, in toasty Bolillo rolls, with my Salsa Fresca, Zab's hot sauce (Goleta CA), and my twist on an Apple Horseradish sauce (recipe improved and borrowed-from liberally from the BBQ aces at Cold Spring Tavern, in Santa Barbara!). Avon Prime!! Great service and vibe in the shop as well. Also, additional shout out to Zab's hot sauces in Goleta, CA, shipped a couple St. Augustine sauces out to CT only to find they sold them on the butcher counter at Fitzgerald's Grocery in downtown Simsbury! NICE! I dry brined with Jake's Famous Pure Santa Maria Dry Rub, and Meat Church's (hi Matt!!) Garlic and Herbs blend, dry rubbed over night. Wish I had more pictures. I was a one-man show on the grill, so had no time. AVON PRIME MEATS (Thanks Jeremy and the crew!), killed it sourcing my Tri-Tips (we did 9 of them - 15 lbs), and with the Bolillo rolls I ordered from Mana Bakery in Meriden, the food was a massive hit at the party! They also have a great selection of cheeses in there and the back have a good selection of different meets including venison, bison and others. They are always friendly and willing to help with any questions about any of the items they have. there soft pretzels which i believe come from Hartford are also amazing! Sadly, ducklings bought frozen, and thawed in the fridge, smelled spoiled when unwrapped before cooking. Returned them to store and owner failed to offer appropriate customer service. Instead, she attributed the spoilage to my handling of the product, and did not believe me that I thawed them only in the fridge. However, she was wrong. She should have just accepted return and refunded my cost. Eventually, she reluctantly decided to refund half of my purchase price. All in all a disappointing experience from a special store, that should excel in customer service. read more

I asked my husband to pick up chicken cutlets that were trimmed up and had all of the fat cut off of them. I wanted them ready to go into the pan for Christmas Eve dinner. He came home with 4lbs of the most expensive, fattiest, thickest cutlets- still attached at the center, that I have ever seen. One of them even had a bone sticking out of it! Because I am disabled my husband has picked up cutlets for me at other places, so I know he knew exactly what to ask for when getting them. This means that he was ignored by the staff or it was done on purpose because by the time they were trimmed ( bone and all) about 1/4lb was in the garbage! The company that I work for had its Christmas party catered by this place. Everything was amazingly good! I especially liked the short rib and cheese spring rolls and steak skewers. I was afraid to eat the skewers at a party where I had to stand and talk to a lot of people but they were so tender and easy to eat. Some of the other items were chicken skewers, pulled pork, pork belly squares, crab cakes, Mac & cheese balls. Everything was a hit! If you are a carnivore then this is pretty close to heaven. A wide selection of prime beef, chicken, pork, and even some fish is what Avon prime meats concentrates on. The selection of similar protein in the grocery store doesn't come close to what APM offers, albeit at prices higher than the grocery store. They will custom cut your selections, just like the old days. Try it out you won't be disappointed with the selection and the service is excellent. read more

Cute place for locally-sourced goods and fresh meats but obscenely pricey for fresh produce. APM originally marketed itself as a niche butcher for rare and expensive cuts - it opened under the name The Meat House and since then changed ownership/rebranded, and expanded into produce, desserts, pastas, you name it. They also have fresh sandwiches that are made-to-order and a bunch of sides that you can buy by the pound. Could not recommend the steak tips more strongly - they are phenomenal. Over the years we've probably tried every flavor they've had to offer and I haven't had a complaint with any, although the teriyaki and the pepper ones have been my favorite. They have a honey bourbon (?) flavor too that my dad really likes. My mom is a big fan of the balsamic vinegar they have for sale (save your bottle and get a discount on refills) and I opt for the fresh salsa. They always have samples on display too so you can try some of their other products. Plus, they sell Tulmeadow Farms (Simsbury) ice cream! I've been a little disappointed by some of the sides before; they're not bad, but you can get stuff that's just as good from the display case at Big Y down the road. And for fresh produce, as aforementioned, forget it - it's so obscenely expensive that a combination trip to a regular grocery store is mandatory. All in all, will return. For a birthday dinner, I contacted several meat markets in CT looking for domestic lamb. Avon Prime Meats were one of a few meat markets who actually carried it. We proceeded to the store (1.5 hr away) and bought 2.5 racks of lamb and two pieces of the prime filet mignon. Both meats were fantastic and people couldn't stop raving about it. If there's one thing my son and I are ALLLL about, it's fancy and exotic meats. We'll pretty much try anything once and have never turned down an opportunity to experience something wild. The problem is that there is really nothing local that challenges us in that carnivorous way we love. While discussing the Christmas dinner menu last November, he decided to just go ahead and Google "fancy exotic meats". The idea was to find a place that had a whole Goose, but if it had OTHER stuff too...DOUBLE WIN! Luckily this place came up near the top of the list and after some brief investigation and a bit more Googling, we found it wasn't super far from us (~30 minutes) and that they did indeed have the Goose, and...other stuff. We planned a Saturday afternoon trip for the upcoming weekend. Coming from our part of the state, it was actually a really awesome drive. Super scenic, small town after small town. It wasn't until we actually turned the corner onto the street it's located on that it actually seemed like an actual busy town. Quickly found the place in a quaint little plaza and grabbed a parking spot. On a side note, this whole area seemed really awesome. It was our first time through and we were impressed with the variety of shops, eateries, etc. Very cool. As soon as you walk into the place, the smell hits you and you know you're in for some belly love. The main deli counter was over to our right and we went right up to check out the menu. The plan was to get a few sandwiches and the Goose and maybe browse around for a bit. We ordered an Italian Stallion and an Ultimate Black and Blue Steak sandwich. The polite gent behind the counter let us know that it would just be a few minutes and to have a look around, we obliged him! Let me just say that this place has like EVERYthing. I mean something for everyone. Fancy hot sauces, a whole charcuterie section, LOVE!!!!! It's just a really cool store with more cool stuff than we could have even covered. And the back freezer with exotic meats was literally exactly what we were looking for. Kangaroo burgers? YES! We started small and grabbed some duck wings and a big hunk of marrow bone. We also took the time to peruse the fresh meat selection, I mean...It's a meat market so you gotta right? Everything was on the pricey side as expected, but visually it looked absolutely amazing. I couldn't resist grabbing a NY strip, just on principle. The sandwiches were ready in 10-15 minutes and we were on our way. Being that we were starving and 30 minutes from home we decided to indulge in the car and that was a good call. Really amazing sandwiches to the point of no matter what you're there for, you almost have to get one. They ended up not having any whole goose in the freezer as it was still a month or so away from Christmas and the guy told us to come back in a week or so. Busy schedule prevented that, but we will be back regardless. Grilled the steak that night and it was absolutely amazing. It tasted like steaks I've paid 3 times as much for in fancy restaurants. I can't believe I've lived in Avon 3 years and never been here. It was suggested by someone at work that I go and get the steak tips. First, it's so much more than a butcher shop. The collection of unique groceries, Fresh produce and cheeses is quite impressive. When I was checking out I told the cashier that I had never been and she gave me a sample of their famous steak tips. I was excited to take them home and grill them!! I was there for filets and got the prime ones. The meat didn't disappoint. It was sooo tender and delicious. The steak tips were divine. So tender and flavorful. I can't wait to return. read more

Name change alert !! The same great stuff, but the store has a new name. In April 2014 , the various franchises of the Meat House ran into some financial difficulty, and the chain closed down to reorganize. The owners of the Avon franchise have decided to go it alone, and renamed their venture "Avon Prime Meats". Because their stock was locally sourced, they are in effect selling the exact same stuff they were as a Meat House franchisee. We popped in Saturday and the store looks exactly the same, including the freebie meat samples in the back of the store and the salsa and chip samples in the front of the store. We picked up two pounds of their wonderful maple bourbon steak tips and grilled them up at home. They were just tremendous. So bottom line, nothing has changed, except the name. They have new signage over the front door and a new advertising logo on their catering truck read more

This is a small gourmet shop. This place has a lot of interesting products. Shop is neatly arranged, but small. One thing I must say is, this place is expensive. I went to see if I can find venison or anything else that is exotic. They have an exotic meat section, but it didn't have what I was looking for. It had some kind of lamb, pork, turkey and duck, definetely not what I wanted. I found some interesting sauces including spicy wasabi. Adorable store! I was really craving a sandwich so my friend and I stopped just to check it out. It's an adorable store with beautiful meats and tons of prepared meals, deli, and local delights. I ordered a BLT and some Mac and cheese from the deli. It was perfect!! It was delicious. This store is fun and cute and adorable and if you ever need a quick and fancy meal, this store is it! I will say it's obviously more expensive than a grocery store but they have sales during the week. I might consider my splurge once in a while place. Everything here is fantastic, but they need to do something about their sandwiches. The last five/six sandwiches I have gotten have just been not good. Each time I get one I hope it was a fluke, but it seems that there is a lack of care being put into the the prep of any of their pre-selected or custom combination sandwiches. The bread can be very hard/borderline stale, the wrong lettuce is being used (it's salad lettuce, so it falls out), the meat isn't properly placed, etc.. and it's just not as good as it once was. I know APM has all the ability to make the best sandwiches in the area, but it seems like this area of the store is not getting the attention it deserves. Please fix, I love sandwiches. read more

What was AVON Meat House became AVON Prime meats and more importantly a local institution. They have a fantastic supply of local meats and other grocery products. It's our go to sunday BBQ grill place too. They are super friendly and very responsive. And importantly they are very involved in local charitable endeavors. I like this place, just definitely overpriced. You get what you pay for but I found a hair in my chicken salad from them. Definitely wasn't what I paid for... they refunded me without a hassle but I wish I hadn't experienced that in the first place. It makes me not want to risk eating prepared foods from here again. I've driven passed this place numerous times but never thought to go in. My friend was craving a sandwich so we finally decided to try it out. The store is small but packs a lot of foods! It has breads, fresh focaccia from First and Last, pre-made meals, a variety of meats and cheese, plus a deli. There are also fancy condiments and desserts. The roast beef sandwich is amazing! I would highly recommend it and it's huge! I saved half for lunch the next day. It piled with roast beef and I liked that they wrap it in such a way each bite, I get meat, cheese, and veggies (lettuce, onion and tomato). It comes with a horseradish cheese and an herb spread. I also got the pasta salad which was delicious! At first I was put off by the large macaroni but it turned out to be great! It has chopped up carrot and onion, plus dill! 1.) Just to warm you up: Butcher shops either seem few and far in between or phasing out due to scares on red meat and the newest culture of eating more plant based foods. I believe red meat isn't that bad for you if you do it in moderation, drink water, eat veggies and fiber. 2.) What your eyes may see: More than just steaks. They have a cold cut deli, and they even sell produce, eggs, chips, and alcohol. 3.) The meatiness: I bought Filet Mignon, Sirloin Tips and Short Ribs. The Filet Mignon was $11.99 for one. Basically the same size at Ruth Chris, except they sell it at that restaurant for $30 JUST for the steak itself. So I spent less than half for this quality meat. But I felt the quality of meat was subpar. I feel Whole Foods tasted better than this one. 4.) Service: The guy who helped me was pretty helpful. He knew the grades of fat to protein ration for each steak. I was new and they gave me a sample of their marinated sirloin steak to take home and cook for myself. 5.) Extra Info: The cows come from one farm and that is in Litchfield, CT. Cattle is raised on a vegetarian, free range farm. 6.) Impressions: It's okay for quality. I might get a little hate for this, but I wasn't blown away by Avon Prime Meats. It's a super adorable market with great stuff, but nothing out of the ordinary. It's a smaller locally own version of fresh market or whole foods. There's something to be said for shopping small, and they do carry a good selection of smaller batch, local items (honey, syrup, etc) but the prices seemed really high to me. I can't bring myself to spend $9 for a small container of pasta salad. I just can't. If you don't mind the cost, and let's pretend you don't, then is a great place to go if your hosting a wine and cheese night, looking for prepared foods, or interesting jams, jellies, and marinades, or looking to satisfy your sweet tooth with yummy little personal size desserts. We go to Avon pretty often because my partner lives in West Hartford. I've always driven by Avon Prime Meats but never stopped in. This time we did, and it was just before the 4th of July. The store has a ton of other items - seasonings, side dishes, and other barbecue fair. We went to the meat counter and got chicken and steak tips, pre-seasoned. Everything was obviously fresh and seasoned incredibly well. Even with flavors my partner doesn't usually like (lemon) he devoured them. We also got some balsamic vinegar and a few other necessities and signed up for their loyalty program. We'll definitely be stopping in again, just be prepared to pay for what you're getting - they definitely aren't cheap! read more
