I came here for Brunch and it was a really cute spot. The bottomless brunch was only $30 and included a variety of drinks. Their backyard space is really nice, spacious, and decorated really nice. The service was really good, they kept the drinks coming and brought the food out in a reasonable time and we were a group of 10 or 12. The tres golpes is actually really good, I wish I had ordered that. The portions are large so you can share it. I ordered the french toast and I didnt love it. There was an overwhelming amount of yogurt on it and I could not eat it. Otherwise, no complaints. I recommend if you want good music and cute pictures. read more

This was our second visit in five days. We went at first because we heard it was dog friendly-- but went back because it's also VERY customer friendly!! Our server, Emily, is a lovely, articulate young woman who was so generous with her time and conversation. (I'd rave more about her but this is a review of Avoca after all) We had the Eloté for the second time because it's awesome! Seasoned to perfection and full corn cobs! No gloppy sauce (I know some like that but we preferred the cheese-crusted corn cobs-- lighter and easier to eat) The Caesar salad was also delicious; the croutons were crunchy and added a nice kick to the dressing, which had a hint of sweetness--another culinary innovation. It so happened that Tuesdays are taco nights, so we had three street tacos each: "Al carbón"- steak--and shredded pork (barbacoa). So much food!! We have snacks for tomorrow. But we must add, that not only is Avoca a lovely eatery/ pub, with a nice patio which provides dog friendly service, but the dog menu is epic!! Our Frenchie enjoyed the doggie meatloaf... (we saved some as a treat for tomorrow) and we felt good about letting her have a healthy entree of her own. All at very reasonable prices!! I came here for a "private" party on a weekend. The set-up was weird (I was not the host of the party); the party was in a back terrace space, but the party had to stand in a cramped middle space and try to order drinks while other guests sat at tables around us and had full meals. I don't know why anyone would set up a restaurant this way and especially an "event space." Due to the number of people, it was very crowded and loud. The service was also bad, as the waiters were more concerned with getting food and drinks to the tables on the back terrace and not with our party standing around. We were told to just order on an app and hope our drinks would come 20 minutes later. I will say that the terrace area was cute to look at, but there were bugs (I guess that's what you get for being outside). The drinks were just okay - not anything special or inventive given the price. I didn't experience anything at Avoca that would make me want to return. read more

Have been here a couple times and can say the food is good- recommend their smash burger if it is still on the menu. More importantly booked a bigger party table and the organization and logistics went smoothly which is a big plus for this place, in that they are reliable. My husband and I came here to try their Happy Hour deals. It was a sweltering 90+ degree day and we walked into a hot restaurant. They had the doors wide open, but there was no breeze and they didn't have their A/C on. I can understand if it was a nice breezy day, but it was so uncomfortable to dine in there. The HH drinks are reasonably priced with specials on beer, wine and margaritas. Unfortunately, the margaritas were weak and not worth it. The taco deal (3 for $10) they have is good and we actually enjoyed them so much we ended up ordering 6 tacos each. The veggie taco was surprisingly my favorite and I enjoyed the texture of the taco shells. In an area where there are a ton of great restaurants, I don't think I would return for HH. I would come back to try their other cocktails, but if their margarita is any indication of the alcohol content...I'll pass. read more

This place is probably great on non-rainy, warm days. For some reason, even though the whole front of the restaurant was open, we were sat in the back, which is enclosed but with many openings in the ceiling. The roof is tin and the rain hitting it was so loud that we couldn't hear each other talking. And because it was cold outside, we were cold. That being said- the food and drink were delicious and very reasonably priced. I'd come back on a nice day. Our waitress did go kind of MIA at the end and it took over a half hour of waiting and us finally flagging someone down to get the check. Really wanted to like this place. It's very cute inside and there's a great outdoor area in the back for private parties. I've been twice now, once for dinner and a cocktail about a year ago, and again recently for their all day Thursday happy hour. While the happy hour is decent with $10 margaritas and $9 glasses of wine, I have never had a good food experience here. Everything is extremely overpriced for the portions and the flavor is lackluster. I ordered truffle fries ($12) and received a measly side bowl with luke warm fries and barely any truffle flavor, despite paying more for it. The chicken sandwich looks very impressive yet the flavor is not there. I would recommend popping in if you want a $10 margarita on a Thursday but wouldn't recommend any of the food items. But the food is overwhelmingly overpriced, to the point of being ridiculous...Cesar Salad unremarkable, soggy, the zucchini sticks were very good but 16 or 17 dollars (for a bunch of zucchini cut in long strips with shaved parm). Avoca is known for having a great rotating happy hour in the UES, and its been on my list to try for a while now. Today I dropped by for $10 signature cocktails and live music and was disappointed to see the live music hadn't started yet (advertised to start at 5pm, and we arrived around 6pm). While I was disappointed about the music, the $10 cocktails met expectations. I got the passion fruit mojito and friend ordered the paloma. Both of our drinks were good and while we didn't get food, the plates passing by to go to other tables looked incredible. We chatted and enjoyed our drinks on the back patio which was beautifully decorated with plants and was a quiet oasis that felt removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. I would recommend coming here to take advantage of their drinks specials and get a burger. I wouldn't come back for a sit down meal again. Wish I had gotten to see the cute outdoor area out back that's heavily featured for this place on Yelp and Google Maps. Unfortunately it's not covered, so it was closed off on the rainy day we came in. They had a live singer doing covers. He seemed so sweet but to be honest he was a below average singer and it did not help the ambiance. Props to him for keeping pretty good timing and doing a decent job with the guitar covers, but the singing was so flat and made us cringe. When he would take breaks they would switch to blasting music from the late 90s to early 2000s. My older sister loved the music they picked to put on speaker. Even though my parents would never really vibe to the music they played on speaker, they were so grateful for breaks from the live singer that even they perked up and jammed out to the old school R&B. Food was pretty good, although I wish the menu had more options. It's strange to me that their burger is on there twice, with the only difference being that one option is a triple while the other is a double. We came in on a rainy day with a reservation and got seated at the booth nearest to the bar and the door. They have doors that were also open right in front of our booth, and when it started pouring, my mom started getting wet in our booth. When I asked our server if the doors could be closed, she told me that someone would probably not want to go outside in the rain to deal with the doors. She didn't offer to move us to a different table, didn't apologize, and seemed unconcerned with the fact that water was clearly starting to get on the booth. In fact, she seemed peeved that I was asking. When I pushed her to ask, she clearly had attitude on her face, but she finally agreed to ask. We later saw the host outside with an umbrella closing the doors. She came by often enough to start, but once we got out mains we stopped seeing her. I had later gotten up from the table to ask for our bill and some to-go containers, and she told me she wasn't handling our table anymore. She did not convey this to our table at all, and it explained why someone else had started coming by. We did not understand that he was our new server since there were also several others who had come by to help with the same sorts of tasks. The Thai mussels were good, but they only came with two pieces of mini naan and we were charged for two more pieces. I thought the naan was kind of an odd choice, but probably done to keep in theme with the Thai flavors. I'm used to being given bread that can actually soak up the sauce, and naan is better for scooping up food. The sauce for the mussels was flavorful, and very rich. It was a starter, but quite large. If you wanted to order this for yourself as a main you definitely could. The burger was solid. Good size, well done, hot, and the right amount of lettuce/onions/tomatoes. My mom seemed to enjoy the salmon and carrots for the most part, but I saw her wrestle with the broccoli rabe. It was clearly not tender at all even though she was only trying to eat the tops. My sister loved her zucchini sticks. I got a taste of them and understood why. It was an unexpectedly good flavor combination. The only downside is there's not a whole lot of variety there. I think I'd probably feel like I was hungry again not much later without a carb or protein. The chicken fried mushrooms were delicious. So crispy, and the sauce on the plate paired well. Our cocktails were good, and only $10 since it was after 5 on a Sunday. I wish they had been a touch stronger, but appreciated the price point. All in all, again, I'd recommend coming here for drinks. Clearly all the other patrons here got that message. They were somewhat rowdy, and excitedly sang along with the live singer, blissfully unaware of how off-key he was. read more

New restaurant in the UES, well opened in October. It is LOUD during the Saturday brunch and with the younger crowd in attendance this isn't surprising and is not a complaint. It's great to feel like things were "before". The plates are not lacking food when they come out and the taste and quality are excellent. They have bottles of wine for sale too if you do not want to have a craft beer or a handcrafted cocktail. Great spot for a birthday experience. Hosted an event in the back patio. The back patio's heaters are extremely warm, especially during a cold December night! Rory was amazing answered every question prior, gave recommendations and coordinated everything. The preordered platters came out at the exact time we asked and we were able to order other items as well throughout the party. The general manager and waiter for our party were exceptional!
