I rarely write up any yelp reviews but I had such a great experience last night at Char that I needed to give them kudos! I was there for dinner with a coworker who has a lot of allergies. Our server was so accommodating, patient, and so friendly that she really upgraded our overall experience! The food was phenomenal. I got the special which was a lobster carbonara. I was worried that it might be too rich, but just as our server informed us, it was just perfect. The cocktails and wine selection were fantastic. We came late on a weekday, well after the dinner rush, so we received great service in a timely manner. The one page menu is rather basic with burgers, salads and side dishes. We were all very pleased to see how seriously Char is taking the post-COVID reopening protocols - tables are well spaced, sanitized, and employees all wearing masks. Great drinks, OK food and maybe OK service. We live in rocky river and were hoping to have some new options rather than more of the same. The menu is pretty common- grass fed burger, fairly heavy sandwiches and Mac-n-cheese. Appetizers were fairly heavy considering the entree options that they can be paired with. First, we saw some friends sitting at the bar and got some attitude from the hostess for making her wait even tho it was a very slow night in the restaurant. Then, once seated, we had to flag down a busboy to get our server to come over- probably 10 minutes waiting to be acknowledged. It's still new so easy fixes there. We did really enjoy the drinks and in this town that goes a long way. We'll try it again someday but it won't be in the weekly rotation without a service improvement and or tweaks to the menu. This was my first time at this restaurant, and WOW. It was absolutely phenomenal. Staff was wearing masks and social distancing was enforced. They were kind about safety measures and had everyone's best interest at heart. A *huge* variety of whiskey and unique drinks. The Char Sour and Hey Jealousy (cocktails) where beautifully presented, and they tasted unique and bold. The menu prices were great and the food superb!! This is our second time visiting Char. The first time was pre-COVID-19. It was actually the weekend of the opening and the experience was uneven. Tonight we got takeout - strip steak, potatoes mac & cheese. Everything was outstanding. It was so good my wife and I said nothing as we ate our meal-partly because we were hungry but mostly because the food was so good. Steaks were delicious. We asked for them to be cooked 'medium' and they were perfect. Potatoes were baby red skinned potatoes and they were delicious. Mac N Cheese delicious as well. The first time I ate here (when it first opened) the food was amazing. I would have given them a 5 star review. But, I've eaten here twice since and felt disappointed both times. The most recent time, I tried the berry salad with goat cheese and it was basically a plate of finely chopped romaine lettuce. It had few pieces of chopped walnuts and very little goat cheese. Not well portioned for the amount of lettuce. The balsamic dressing was very acidic and it was drenched. My son got the pretzel appetizer and I also got the yum yum shrimp appetizer which weren't awful. I guess I expected the shrimp to come tossed in the sauce (bc that's how it is at other places) but instead it was large breaded shrimp with a side of sauce for dipping. It tasted good though. To drink I had a margarita, which cost the same as my appetizer in a small rocks glass, and my son had a soft drink. The bill was more than $70 after tip which made it all the more disappointing. Service was nice, the waiter was friendly but didn't come back to offer refills so he could have been more attentive. read more

My wife and I drove into town late on a Wednesday night and found Char on Yelp. It sounded right up our alley so we hurried there as it was to close in 15 minutes. We got in there and the bartender told us it was last call. We asked if they were still serving food and she said they'd turned off the stove but she'd ask to get it turned back on. They were great about it and we ordered quickly. We had an amazing salad and burger and a couple of beers that we really enjoyed. My girlfriend and I were passing through the area on a long road trip and we are SO glad we found this place! We called ahead to make sure the patio was dog friendly and the man on the phone said that it fills up fast but he was able to take a reservation. When we arrived we were sat and greeted quickly. Our server Victoria was awesome. She was very knowledgeable about drinks and food. We settled on the poke as a starter, the filet (cooked medium rare-- perfect!) and the scallops. Char cheese was good, so good in fat that we ended up ordering a side to dip our fries in when we got the classic burger as an entree. $3 seemed a bit steep for a side of cheese sauce, but we ate every bit of it. The menu has a Black background and in a somewhat dark atmosphere is very hard to read. Service was OK but not great, food was just OK too.
