We purchased our car rental package with American Airlines. In Indianapolis, we were shocked at how long & slow line at the Avis counter with only 2 employees. We waited just over 2 hours & at the counter. The lady at the counter couldn't check & see what we would be charged. There was one $300+/-charge that came up on the credit card machine that she explained was a security deposit & to call Avis with questions. The charge should have been $200, but came up $300 and she couldn't explain why. In the parking garage, Josh was the employee working. There were marks on the hood & front area around the hood of the car he was giving us. I was worried about being held responsible for this "damage". Josh explained it was a new vehicle & we wouldn't be charged. When looking inside the vehicle, the car was full of trash, we asked about where charging ports were located & Josh told us to go to a gas station & pick up an adapter. At the garage gate, the wonderful female employee (not being sarcastic, she was great), notated the hood & front-end marks on the "pink slip". She notated that the car only had 4000 miles & that "Josh" hadn't even taken the time to put gas in the car! It had less than 1/8th of a tank of gas. This sweet lady explained to us to take a picture of the "pink slip" that most likely when we return the vehicle, the employees will make that "pink slip" disappear & we would be charged for items that we should not be charged for. We were given a dirty rental car, with trash (cups, sunglasses, receipts, & used band aids), hood & front-end marks, & NO FUEL! Terrible customer service. Upon the end of our trip, we made sure to put more fuel in the vehicle than it had when we picked it up. Later that day two separate charges came through on our credit card. One over $300 & another just under $50. Since returning the vehicle I have had daily emails with Avis disputing these unexpected charges, some of which are for fuel. This has been the most disappointing and frustrating transaction of our trip & we won't be using Avis again. To say we are frustrated is an understatement. My advice is to look into other car rental companies. It seems like such a racket with all these crazy fees and surcharges for everything. The absolute worst! I had rented and paid for a rental from Payless, which is owned by Avis and budget and when I arrived at the airport, I was told by the lady at the counter that they ran out of cars! It was almost 1 AM so I had no choice but to Uber to my hotel and then Uber to my meetings the next morning! I spent more on Ubers that morning than the rental had cost! After Uber back to the airport, they finally had a car for me and when I turned it in the Avis counter clerk told me that I could get some compensation and gave me his manager's card! I wrote Miss Espinosa an email and included screenshots of my bank account and Uber charges. She wrote back to ask me for my contract number I sent it to her and she GHOSTED ME! My boyfriend and I rented a car for our visit to Indy and this middle aged woman wearing a Morgan wallen shirt and drinking a venti Starbucks (not a diss just trying to be descriptive so everyone knows who it is because we didn't get her name) charged us around $300 more without our consent because we picked the car up at 10:21 instead of 10:30, and asked if we wanted insurance, neither of which we were informed would incur additional charges. We are not dumb, we signed nothing lol she just said "do you guys want insurance" and nothing about picking the car up 9 minutes early. I feel like I should once again emphasize that we are very nice, smart, and understanding people who have customer facing jobs as well but this was such a huge oversight and inconvenience that I am leaving my first ever yelp review. Why bother making a reservation if they're not actually reserving anything for you?? I made a reservation for a compact car, showed up 5 minutes before my pick up time (office opening). Turns out the staff had gotten there early that day and there was already a line of people being processed (presumably being given the car that I had reserved!). By the time it gets to me, she says all that's left is a huge pick up truck - otherwise I can wait a couple hours for something else. I had no choice but to accept it, and literally couldn't fit into a parking garage reservation I had for later in my trip (too tall). Also had no trunk to hide my luggage in. Having this huge vehicle was a huge inconvenience multiple times on my trip. 1 star for Budget/Avis and their apparent policies. vacation disaster! they told us we didnt have to pay until pick up. they took out full payment a whole 2 weeks before the day to pick up the car rental. now, they wont give us the car that they charged us for and we have to wait up to a month to get that refunded. thanks avis for ruining my first family vacation! and that $750 you stole (they did not have permission to take the money out of my account on june 26th when i registered pick up on july 7!), my 3 kids now have to see their parents work harder to fix a mistake cause by a multi million dollar company! i will never recommend avis to anyone and i will show up with picket signs and a bull horn if i am not refunded immediately! read more

These dimly lit Avis people have an unusual business plan. It seems their goal in business is to avoid making money by inventing reasons to NOT rent you a car. Not boasting, but I live in a paid-for house and literally haven't borrowed money for over 15 years. Zero debt whatsoever. But apparently the cardinal sin among low-IQ rental car companies is for a customer to walk into their business without credit card. I called ahead and clarified that I needed a vehicle for one day, but that I only use debit cards. The woman at the office said it wasn't a problem. "All you'll need is the debit card and a driver's license, and sometimes they do a credit check but I've never seen anyone rejected", she said. "Excellent!", I replied. "See you on Wednesday, and have a great day." Today when I show up to rent the car I was told by a little boy that I'd need a credit card instead of a debit card, and that my credit score wasn't acceptable. As an added bonus, he said I couldn't even make me the driver of a car if someone else rented it because my credit was rejected. (If you don't borrow money, you don't have a credit score.) Ok, so maybe the kid wasn't the brightest. Maybe he sits there each day dreaming about how many tide pods he can fit into his mouth at once. But I doubt it's totally his fault. I'm guessing he can't make a judgment call on something without getting permission from everyone between his mom and Avis headquarters. His hands are tied. He's powerless and incapable of making a common sense judgment call if his empty little life depended on it. His role at Avis could literally be performed by an orangutan. But the real gripe here is that I called ahead and even offered to let them see my checking account balance that would prove I'm not a dead beat like the hordes of bums sleeping on the Indianapolis sidewalks. Yet even after that, they don't reveal until the moment you try to rent a car that you're out of luck. They make you wait until you're beyond ready to go home that you're not getting a car from them. Most of the planet lives paycheck to paycheck and there's even a lot of car thieves out there. But come on Avis, grow some brain cells. A credit card wouldn't stop someone from stealing a car. When it comes to customers, shouldn't you be just as willing to rent to someone with enough money in their checking account to buy 5 cars as you are someone with a $500 credit card limit? Just because someone isn't living on payments doesn't mean they can't rent one of your dreary cars. Just ask Dollar Rental Cars. They gave me a car without a hassle. Dollar made money from me today. Avis didn't. So if you've cut up your credit cards and make a habit of staying out of debt, avoid Avis like the plague. There's no intelligent life there. read more

I rented a car from Avis for a business trip to Chicago. Fortuitously, the car I got had Illinois plates and came with the EZ Pass for tolls. Picking up the car was easy enough. Dropping it off was another matter. Unlike every other time I have returned a rental car, I couldn't just drop off the keys and go. I had to park the car in the garage, figure out how to get OUT of the garage on foot (seriously, it wasn't easy), walk around the block to Avis and then wait for nearly 15 minutes with only one customer in front of me. The employee walked out to the garage to inspect each car. Considering I had to park on the third floor, this wasn't a quick task. He also had no sense of urgency when it came to the paperwork. My fiance was waiting outside to take me back home, so it was especially irritating as we both had to get to work. Honestly, it would have been quicker and easier to just drop the car off at the airport and take a cab home! read more

I hate to give negative reviews and I rarely leave s review, but I'm very unhappy with this location. I rent vans for work and have done so about 30 times a year. I called and talked to the manager of this location after making a reservation online. I was informed that they do not allow after hours drop offs due to the size of the van in their small parking garage. I told her that I need to cancel my reservation then and she convinced me not to based on the idea that they can set out cones to hold a space for me. So I agree to keep my reservation. When I arrive to pick up my van, she (the manager) tells me that under no circumstance will I be able to drop after hours. Now inside of the cancellation window I'm forced to take the van and add a day to my business trip. That's hotel and other costs. It was easy to rent the car online, and really helpful that the office was walking distance from our hotel. But when we showed up to pick it up the front desk person was painfully slow. He was helping another customer for at least 15 minutes and never acknowledged us. While we waited two more people came in and he ignored them as well. We had a rental vehicle reserved with another company, however when we went to pick it up, we were told we could not without a major credit card. Larry at Avis, set us up with a vehicle for the day so we could take our son to visit the campus of Notre Dame.
