Renting a car can be as thrilling as joining the Mordor swim team but thanks to Alysa my experience was like finding something so precious that I'll never let it go! If I could leave a zero star review I would. Worst customer service possible. An extremely likely case of false advertising. Avoid this company at all costs. I decided to use this company because it was about $20 cheaper than Avis and the Payless website stated that the airport counter is open 24 hours. The airport counter is not open 24 hours.. I should have went with Avis or enterprise. Uploaded images of the complaint I submitted. You should read them before making a decision. read more

I will NEVER book with these people again. Terrible customer service and wouldn't give us back our money said we had to call them. I sent two of my employees to Indianapolis for training, booked car weeks in advance. Everything was ready to go. They get there and tell them they rented all there cars and had none for my guys. I have NEVER had this happen with enterprise. Absolutely last time I book with this WORTHLESS company. read more

I would rate them a zero if possible. I arrived at the rental counter 30 minutes before my pickup time of 1 AM. Nobody was working the rental counter to rent a car to me. I waited until 1 AM but nobody showed up. I called their customer service phone number but it was closed. I had to arrange alternate transportation at additional expense. When I called their customer service number the next day, nobody cared. No help. Terrible service. I travel regularly but I will never rent from this company again. read more

I blame our corporate travel agency who always looks for the lowest-priced rental, without bothering to check Yelp or other review sites. First of all, there's no signage at the airport directing you to a Payless window. We had to ask one of their competitors at the rental car kiosks inside the airport who gave us a sad look and directed us to the curb outside the baggage carousels. Eventually, a van showed up and took us for a ride, After about 15 minutes, we began to wonder whether the lot was in downtown Indy (our ultimate destination), but a quick glance at the Yelp map showed we were merely circumnavigating the airport. We finally arrived at the rental lot, which reminded me of an impound lot -- a chainlink fence surrounding a pitted gravel lot filled with cars in various states of repair. (Before stepping out of the van, I cautiously looked around for a junkyard dog). Seeing none, I quickly stepped into the trailer that served as their office. The clerk gave the option of a prepaid tank or an onerous filling surcharge - I opted to to fill the tank myself, although when I got behind the wheel, I noticed the tank was only 3/8 full! (I took a pic of the fuel gauge and trip odometer before and after for proof). As their old dot-matrix printer chewed out a copy of the rental agreement, the agent proudly said that our car was being cleaned and was being brought around, but when it finally pulled up, there was bug splatter all over the grill and hood, although the car was dripping wet. The agent looked at us and said, "What do you expect? It's summer in Indiana!" The driver, however, apologized and said that the only equipment he had was a hose and a squeegee, although he hoped Payless would eventually install a washer. The inside of the car wasn't much cleaner -- it could have used a burst of air freshener to eliminate the residual cigarette smoke and a thorough vacuuming to remove tangled human hairs. One star for the condition of the vehicle, the distance from the airport, and the location, which is on an older commercial strip leading into downtown Indianapolis. However, the staff were eager and enthusiastic, rescuing Payless from the abyss and earning them a second star. read more

This is horrible... 20 minute ride from the airport brings you to a ratty old dirty "office" where you stand in line forever while the line clerk does his best... If you have time and are traveling for leisure, maybe this works. For work... not at all. I look for efficiency and ease of doing business and this place has neither. read more

Really far away from the airport. Ghetto. Old beat-up trailer with nowhere to sit while you wait. And you will wait a long time because the customer service is slow and barely competent. Cranky old lady who doesn't want to deal with customer questions. Scuzzy. Ran out of cars and downgraded us. But didn't make a price adjustment. Whatever. We just wanted to get out of there. I told Payless I wanted to decline all coverage. They had me initial a bunch of "Declined" items but buried an "RSP" fee that I didn't notice until after I signed. I didn't even know that RSP meant roadside service plan. They did not ask me if I wanted a roadside service plan. Horrible customer service. We returned our car on time and waited 30 minutes+ for one of the many available drivers on site to shuttle us to the airport. One employee notified a driver that we were waiting and she replied "I don't want to, [other employee] just clocked in didn't she?" So we waited longer until someone finally pulled around to drive us. As she pulled up we went outside to get in and she yelled "not ready yet!" Then pulled around the corner to wait for her shift to officially start. Very unprofessional group who aren't responsive and sit around on their phones. Rental car was good though, and it was affordable so there's that. ‍ read more

Car was really scratched up and smelled like nothing but smoke. I'll attach a photo for example of one set of the scratches. The heat in the car was horrible. Got a reservation thru Expedia. The only website I can find a one-way ride. Everything went smooth with the reservation, everything fine at the counter. A guy from budget assist me with the process. Got the car (clean one), and went with my trip down south. Was SUPER scared about this company because of all the bad reviews but everything was going super nice. BUT JOKES ON MEE!!! They charge me $333 for the trip, and the $200 deposit (which was supposed to get refunded when I returned the car). The amount charged ($533) was erase from my credit card and guess who got charge $6,154!?!?!?!? Now I'm waiting for them to answer the phone. OMG!!! WORST EXPERIENCE EVERRRRRRRR read more

They do not care about your business. Worst service ever and the most run down office!!!! Do not rent from these people unless you want to be abandoned at the airport. They kept us waiting at the airport for an hour. Luckily another car rental company took pity on us and brought us to the location 10 mins away from the airport. It's true, they are slooooooowwwwwww. When we pull into their parking lot, two of their shuttles are sitting w their legs propped up on their phones idle. Apparently their job is not to run the shuttle but to sit playing on their phones. Guess that's why we didn't get a pickup. Thanks read more

Bad news. Avoid this business. Pay extra for onsite airport car rental. Old vans that you have to wait on transport you 3.2 miles to the trailer where you pick up vehicles. By far the best rental prices, but be aware rental lot is about 10 minutes away from the terminal. There is a frequent free shuttle. Drivers and staff were fast and friendly, I forgot something in the car when I returned, and they were able get another shuttle driver to drop it off for me. Will definitely rent from again next time. read more

Too bad there isn't a negative star. Never again. One of two car rentals at IND that has to shuttle you out of the airport. Got there and the computers were down. Told the car had a full tank. It did not. Had to go back in and tell them and they said they had ran out of gas too. Awful location. Also on the form, I told her I didn't want insurance but she circled the box so I initialed agreeing to insurance. Very unprofessional. Not worth saving any money. This place legitimately has the worst customer service, rudest representatives, and most hostile environment I've come across in a long time. Do not waste your time or money...stay away all together. The car was fine. Pickup was confusing and they don't answer their phone when people call to find out where to get shuttle. Pushing it for 2 stars since when we dropped off vehicle we waited 40 minutes to get a shuttle back to the airport and finally called Über to get a ride so we would catch our flight. The 11 other people were probably glad we did since we were the 2nd ones in line for shuttle. This is by the old airport, poorly maintained and poorly staffed if the have 3 vans and one driver in a busy Sunday afternoon. I heard the phone ringing over and over without anyone picking up, probably people looking for a ride to get their cars. read more

I will NEVER rent from Payless again! The customer service was non-existent and the hassle is not worth any minimal savings you may get. I waited at the airport for the shuttle for a half an hour. During this time, I made several attempts to call the customer service number only to be disconnected after waiting for an available representative. Once I finally got through I was scolded like a child for not following the instructions on my confirmation to call for a pickup at the phones provided. After reading her the confirmation email that made no mention of needing to call rather told me to walk to zone 3 where the shuttle will pick you up the representative was very short and finally indicated the shuttle was on the way. There were several other customers also waiting, one of whom said he had attemped to call customer service over 20 times with no luck. Upon arrival, employees were much more concerned with socializing in the parking lot or on their phone in the other shuttle than assisting customers. I will say our shuttle driver was polite once he arrived and safely got us to the off site location. Finally, caution with pick ups after dark. I was sent alone to find the car myself in the dimly lit parking lot. It was difficult to properly inspect the vehicle with the minimal lighting and a cell phone flashlight does little good. Since i was sent alone to check out my car, I was left running paperwork back into the office while staff stood on the deck. There are so many other options and worth any additional charge. This whole process took over an hour getting me to my hotel at nearly midnight! read more

Do not rent from Payless. Two months after returning the vehicle we rented, we got a claim in the mail for damages we did not incur during our time driving it. When we asked Payless to email photos and documentation substantiating the claim, they assured us they would and never did. We finally were able to see the documentation months later, which showed Payless was seeking payment from us for damages incurred a WEEK AFTER we returned the vehicle. In addition to being asked to pay for damages we were not responsible for, we also had about a 30 min. wait at the airport (with an infant in tow) when we picked up the vehicle because Payless had rented the car to two different customers at the same time. From start to finish, this was a terrible experience and evidence that Payless' fleet and administrative management is incredibly poor. Do not trust this company. Rent elsewhere. read more

I booked a rental car for my mother, who was visiting from AZ for 5 weeks. I booked through Expedia. She was supposed to have the car from Jun 17-Jul 20th; but, when she went to pick up the car, they told her she had to rent it for the month, then come back and rent it by the day, after that. It would have cost her approximately $100 more, than the rental had been quoted through Expedia. Upon hearing this, she changed the time to Jun 17-Jul 17th. She & I were going to travel to OH to visit family, from July 13-16th; so, she intended to turn the car in on July 12th, since she wouldn't need it. Again, Payless was going to charge her an additional $50 to turn the car in EARLY?! She returned it on July 17th. I definitely won't rent from these folks again. TERRIBLE!! read more

They will nickel and dime you to death!!! Booked thru hotwire and was quoted 44 total for 3 days. Final bill was 154.. I did agree to basic protection which was $30. But the guy pretended that he would sneak my girlfriend on as a second driver. Guess the going rate for 1 sneaking is $36.. and she drove 10 min during the weekend. While the staff may seem friendly, never assume they are doing you any favors. If my mortal enemy wanted to punish me by sending me to rent another car from this location, I'd ask how much everything costs cuz they'd prolly charge you $3 to borrow a pen to fill out the paperwork. The location is also terrible. It's a 20 min shuttle ride from the airport. read more

Overbilled by $484. Beware that your "estimated total" that comes with the reservation confirmation means absolutely nothing. My estimated total was $243 and yet my final bill came out to $728. Why the difference you ask? Two reasons: #1 - I, along with everyone else I left with, was charged a "Roadside service out of area" fee. Why wasn't this included in the original estimate? Because Payless knows people would never rent from a crappy, offsite no-name brand if they knew the bill was actually going to be 30% higher. #2 - When I showed up I was asked, as usual if I wanted car insurance. I declined and the gal behind the desk followed up by asking me 1) if I had my own and 2) who it was through. I said yes and told her my carrier. Subsequently when I got my bill it had a huge $300 extra charge and when I called in they said it was for car insurance which I told them I declined. The guy said he looked at the contract and I definitely signed for it. I asked to be sent a copy of the contract, which they never sent. Either A) they are lying and are just flat out thieves, or B) the gal at the desk after I explicitly told her I DID NOT want insurance instructed me to initial a ton of boxes and one of them said yes to insurance coverage. If option B, shame on her for duping me, and shame on me for not noticing. So aggravating. This not a budget option folks. If it looks to good to be true... read more

Rating should be minus 5 stars ! Absolutely the worst car rental company and the worst customer service personal. Rented a full sized car and upon arrival was told we had an upgrade .... what we got was a dirty smokey car that was unacceptable. After an hour of waiting they finally "cleaned" a small SUV to use instead. Called customer service and when explained our situation the untrained person on the other end of the call didn't see any problem... after all we were given another car- no apologies for the long wait. Booked a car online, very easy and reasonably priced with low tax/rates. However, when I went to pick up my car, they aren't located at the airport like it states on my reservation. I had to ask someone where they were located and was told they would come pick me up if I called. I'm glad I didn't. I'm from the area, so I got directions. Tried searching for them but they don't exist on a map. Apparently they recently changed their name. Once I got over there, I wad then told my card couldn't run as credit, only debit, and they have a hard time qualifying people with debit. This, after asking for a utility or bill with my name. I ended up walking out and going someplace else. Sad because my previous employer uses this company. I won't be sending people here anymore. read more

This is an update. I contacted Payless about the issues I experienced and they very quickly refunded me for the erroneous charges. Hopefully, counter personnel will get some better training in the future, but from reading the other reviews, they are and have been doing this for a long time. It's their business plan: Overcharge everyone and refund only those that complain. It's a recipe for being shut down, eventually. Found some really Dishonest people in Indianapolis. read more

I am very disappointed this rental service. I rent cars often and have never had such the run around to get an explanation / refund for the extra $91.00 charged to my card. I called several times to get information on the extra charges and no one gave me information. I returned the car on 9/31. It's now 10/14. I finally got an explanation today the extra 91 charge was gas. I signed an agreement to fill the tank if I brought it back needing gas for $2.10 per gallon. I brought the car back 1/2 full. I asked why I was being charged for 43 gallons of gas in a car that hold a maximum of 20 gallons (it would have only needed half of that). I was told that I would get a response in 3 business days....again. I don't usually write reviews, even if I've had a negative experience, but this is a extremely frustrating. Not to mention- as I returned the call someone was in the office complaining about unauthorized/extra charges on their account. I hope to rectify this situation soon. Until then, I most certainly will never use this company again. read more

I came to Indianapolis in May (sorry for the late review) for my niece's wedding. Basically, it took a long time for them to get me a car (maybe lots of cars were being used by business customers on a Friday morning- I don't know). The location didn't have any exciting sports or luxury cars, and the full-size car was a Hyundai Sonata. Not a bad car, but not flashy. Unfortunately, I had to wait for them to try, unsuccessfully, to clean some caked-on mud or crud from the driver's side fender. The car'd been smoked in, and their efforts to deodorize the car weren't successful. All in all, not so horrible; maybe I should have asked for a smaller car in exchange for a price adjustment. I know they can't control what people do with the car, and the mud and cig smell was no big deal. BUT, the desk clerk lied to me about the price of gas, which, fortunately, was easy for me to tell, since I heard her quote a different price to the customer in front of me. You know the drill - they try to sell you a full tank of gas, telling you "We charge this much, and the average gas price around here is that much... if you don't buy it, we charge you a LOT for filling it up if you don't return it full.." I bought the tank of gas, but only because I was able to check the local gas price on my phone and do the calculations. I did get a free bag of trail mix for waiting for my car, but I'd rather deal with someone who's honest than have a bag of trail mix. The guys cleaning the cars and running the shuttle to and from the airport were AWESOME - they made sure I got to the airport on time early in the morning, and generally did the best to make things as good as possible. They're the only reason this review is two stars and not one star. Basically, Payless looks like you "pay less," but they try to get you to upgrade, buy insurance coverage you don't need (I had to argue with the clerk that my credit card covered the collision, in addition to the insurance on my car), and the like. At the same time, the counter service is slow, and there aren't any "fun" cars to rent at their Indy location. Given my experience with Payless in Las Vegas (see review), I'm going to pass on any further interactions with Payless. It costs about the same as other rental car agencies, and while you may or may not "pay less," you certainly get less. read more
