After reading all the horrible reviews I was reluctant to book with Avis but needed a van for company that we were showing around the island and the other car rentals were either out of stock or higher priced. I usually book with Hertz but they did not have ANY vans in stock for the time period I needed. I was pleased with the van we rented - I think it was a Chrysler, it was easy to drive and a very current model. Pick up and drop off was not an issue at all. The only problem was that we had reserved infant seats and a booster seat and they only had booster seats and gave us 2 of those instead. The new rental location is also very convenient. Absolute LIARS. I've rented cars many times and this was my first experience with Avis, which I booked through Costco Travel. The first car they gave me was a Dodge Durango. Three of the seat belts were DEFECTIVE (belt could be pulled but very slowly retract), rendering it completely unsafe. We exchanged the car the following day and were given a Chrysler Pacifica. The van was TRASH when we received it. Dents, scratches all the way around. A leftover empty plastic water bottle was still in the back. There was sand in the car. I'm not sure how this even passed "servicing." They said it was the only van they had left, so we went with it and got through the rest of our trip just fine. At return, while we're still going through the terminal, we receive a damage claim. What a joke. Their car already had all of these damages before we even left the parking lot. The mileage they claimed wasn't even correct. On their report, they claimed we drove 13,412 MILES during the NINE days we had the car. That is how many miles I put into my car over a WHOLE YEAR. Run far away from Avis Honolulu! They are ripping us off after the fact. We rented the car for an agreed-upon cost of $800. We returned it, and upon getting home got charged an additional $1,100!! What?! Have spoken to them at length via phone, and it's due to picking it up early (due to our flight changing) and dropping it off early (again, due to our flight changing). We had it for the agreed-upon duration. And if it wasn't meant to be picked up when our flight arrived, why were we able to pick it up? Regardless, getting charged more than twice as much is absolutely bonkers. Additionally, the key fob was wonky the whole trip. Sometimes the car wouldn't unlock. Sometimes the car wouldn't start. Sometimes we couldn't lock the car. We told the employee this at drop-off and he shrugged in a very uncaring way. We have been extremely loyal Avis customers. When I made the reservation, I gave a debit card number, and no mention was made that I might need a credit card instead. So I Uber to the pickup location with my driver's license and debit card. First glitch is that I need a credit card. After trying to find out why, the agent tells me it's the location policy. So I know the amount I need on my credit card, right? I call my card customer service number and they work with me so that they will honor that amount. Should be ok, right? Not much to say but very simple and easy checkout process. Imelda who assisted us was very friendly and helpful. There was no pressure or hidden add ons like I had with Budget. The SUV that we got upgraded to was perfect for our short trip and ran smoothly. I was worried about returning because our tire pressure was low and I had no where to go to fill it but it was no issue returning it anyway. When I called i was first told that since I did not ask the manager to put it in writing there was nothing I could do. Avis at HNL wasted my time on a tight 24-hour reservation (because rental cars and parking are so expensive in Honolulu) by upgrading me without warning to a crossover SUV even though I specifically booked an Intermediate size sedan. I wanted a vehicle with an enclosed trunk to reduce my chance of a break-in while carrying my baggage, due to Honolulu's high crime rate. In my experience, Thrifty, Hertz, and Enterprise have always had the common courtesy to warn me when they are doing an upgrade. Avis does not. This is the second time this has happened to me in two years. The Avis branch at LAS did the exact same thing in April 2023! This means you have to expressly demand a vehicle with an enclosed trunk, ask the clerk up front exactly what vehicle he or she is assigning, and then challenge the clerk and specifically refuse an upgrade. My guess is that other drivers are probably doing that, so there is less demand for crossover SUVs and the company is trying to balance out the burden on their overall fleet by giving out crossovers to anyone whether they want it or not. I was racing to get the rental car to reach Ko Olina and Kapolei before sunset, where I have never been (and was promptly disappointed). Therefore, I didn't have the time to go back downstairs from level 4 to the Avis counter on level 1 of the rental car center and fight with the clerk for a sedan. This was a problem the next day because I was planning to visit the lookout at Makapu'u Point, which is notorious for its high crime rate. I also wanted to visit the beach access at Turtle Bay (where I stayed with my parents as a teenager over 30 years ago) and Dole Plantation. Because I was saddled with a vehicle where the cargo space is visible from the outside, I had to circle the island clockwise rather than counter-clockwise as originally planned, in order to return to HNL to safely store my baggage in the on-airport facility. Despite that delay, I was able to reach all three key sightseeing destinations, returned the car on time, retrieved my baggage, and got to my flight with plenty of time to spare. But because I lost a half hour in the morning detouring to HNL, I ended up getting lunch at Zippy's (for the second time on this trip) rather than Paia Fish Market in Kailua or Waikiki as originally planned. I did a prepaid reservation and Avis still underestimated the final fees by $3. That's a small discrepancy, but considering how expensive rental cars are nowadays, it's annoying. The only reason I am giving Avis three stars rather than one star is that to be fair, they got the basics right. There was no line when I arrived at the rental car center, so I was on my way quickly. The vehicle worked great, smelled fine, and got me to everywhere I wanted to go. I got the vehicle with a full tank and returned it with a full tank (from the Shell gas station at the airport), and apart from that $3 discrepancy, Avis did not try to hit my credit card with any additional charges. Because the vehicle worked fine, I might use Avis at HNL again in the future if they again have the best price. But I will have to be much more assertive at the counter to make sure they are honoring the original reservation. read more

At Avis Preferred Honolulu Intl Airport, it took over 35 minutes to simply add a second driver and extend the rental two days, service was an utter display of repeated incompetence. After watching the CSR work the computer for over 15 minutes, I asked if there was anything I could do to help. She mumbled with an anguishing expression and continued pecking. After 25 minutes I asked another CSR if she could help her. Within a few minutes the second CSR printed a new contact and handed it to me to sign. I read the contract and handed it back to Rose because the return date had not changed. On her own again, she came up with a second contract; however, it was also wrong again as she only added one extra day. After 35 minutes, Rose completed a third printed contact that was correct. Oddly, as I reached for a pin to sign, Rose took the pin and said... "No, you don't have to sign, that's your copy." Baffled and annoyed I walked away to join my waiting family and encountered the manager. Not angry but frustrated, I described this encounter. She immediately displayed an arrogantly dismissive expression and took no interest as to what I was describing, simply saying several times "she is new" as though that totally justified the unnecessary delay and contract corrections. When asked... Don't these circumstances give you any concern, and isn't it a problem that I didn't sign the new agreement - Her response was to walk away while stating "No, you don't have to sign and she is new. She's only been here eight weeks". Honestly, I found the managers behavior to be more egregious than the 35 minute delay. If Rose is new, she apparently hasn't received adequate training and the manager is a poor supervisor and mentor to her employees, allowing them to flounder with obvious consequence to customers. read more

I'm like to inform anyone who may use Budget rental car. That customer service is very bad. When I arrived to pick up my car at the Honolulu Airport location the attendant asked me if would I like a truck or Jeep? I said a Jeep and he told me to go out find my car, the space # provided. I found the Jeep Wrangler and did a walk around inspection to make sure there were no previous damages as I always do. I took a few photos with my phone because there were many scratches. I drove the car to the exit check out station and I ask the girl in the booth if she could verify the scatches, she said they are not scatches it's dirt, there was also mud all over the tires and running board. I said to her, don't they wash the car before they rent it? She said, no they don't. I was suprised. I have never gotten a dirty car rental ever. The next problem was when my husband and I returned car on Thursday 2/6/2025. I had originally put our bags and my jacket in the back area of the Jeep. When my husband loaded the luggage into the car he put it in the the back seat instead. He dropped me off at the curd with the luggage and he returned the car. He did not check in the back of the Jeep. Unaware of my jacket that I never wore, it just stayed in the back the whole time, the weather was to warm in Honolulu to need my jacket. As soon we got home I realize my jacket was left in the Jeep. I call Budget immediately and we began the run around process of trying to find my jacket through the lost and found. This is when I realized that the customer service and customer care was a Joke!! They obviouly do not have a system for items left in their cars, so if who ever takes it out and wants it, they just take it home to their house instead of contacting the lost and found. I have called over 10 times with all my rental car information and created a reference #21177187 number, for follow up calls. I also sent my friend, who lives in Honolulu, to the airport inperson to check on the jacket and to try and find out where the lost in found was located. PURCHASE Compact Category - Nissan Altima Silver Sedan For 9 Days ($633.68... or approx. $70.41/day): Although this was relatively the off-season, I felt due to the COVID supply-chain issues that occurred during the past couple years that apparently continued to this day, the price was a bit shocking for this low-rung car category. The initial base rate was $452.43 ($50.27/day) with unlimited mileage as long as you returned the vehicle full with gas, but the various fees and taxes that totaled $181.25 seemed really excessive. Plenty of natural lighting came through all the surrounding openings during the day while plenty of soul-sucking fluorescent lighting filled in the rest at night. OVERALL Avis Rent A Car's Honolulu International Airport location worked perfect for me and my needs and would definitely consider them again. The seamless and nearly hands-off service won me over; however, the rates had very little to be desired. It was fun buzzing around in "someone else's" car for over a week! Person at counter sold us on the gas prepay option. Said it locked in rate of $4.50 per gallon. I asked him twice if we have to pay for a full tank even if we don't use it all. He said NO both times and said we only pay for the gas used. Also even said if we find it cheaper and fill it then we don't pay at all even though it was "pre paid". So I assumed that means you get a refund. Well we didn't fill it and used 1/2 a tank. On a jeep wrangler half a tank is about $50... Well we just got charged for the full tank so the person fully lied. Wasn't about to read their 10 pages or fine print after 10 hour flight either. Will never use them again. I have a feeling they do this on purpose knowing they are lying as they were really pushy with other customers on insurance as well. The 4th floor agent who checked me in added an extra charged item (liability) that I did not accept nor initialed. I tried to call daily to resolve it. This is coming 2 weeks late but I promised myself not to forget to leave this review. I first would like to give a BIG thank you to agent Maelany and the driver who was able to retrieve my lost necklace Zhan dee (There was one more lady but I didn't catch her name). I rented a car at Avis and placed my necklace on the dashboard for a quick second and it quickly slid towards the front window (forever lost in a black hole now). I tried EVERYTHING I could to get my necklace out for 2 days but nothing worked for me. Once I was at the airport to return the car I had to make peace with the idea of my necklace being gone forever. I told the agent how bummed I was before I left. I turned in the keys and off I went to the terminal. Shortly after taking the shuttle to the terminal and checking in my bags I get a call from an unknown number. It was Avis letting me know that my necklace was saved!! Incredible that they even cared to try shortly after I left! But then to call me and tell me!
