I booked an economy car and after waiting over an hour in line, I was told there were no more economy cars and I was forced to either pay $10 a day for an upgrade or wait at the rental car center for an unknown amount of time until an economy was returned! I have never rented a car from a company who did not offer a free upgrade to me when the car size I paid for was not available. This is an unethical way to conduct business. I have had nothing but trouble with Avis, and today was no exception. I rented a vehicle online due to my car being in the shop and immediately headed to the site to pick it up. Upon arrival, I'm promptly told they have no vehicles available -- none -- in spite of seeing a couple dozen in the pickup area ready for customers to drive off with. (Who were those vehicles for if not for customers with reservations, which I had?) Agent didn't even offer to help me find something somewhere else. This place is a fraud. I drove 55 miles, filled up the gas tank with more gas than i used. I was running late, and didn't realize they charged me for gas. I clearly filled up gas right before i returned the car. They are frauds, and probably charge everyone for gas even when they refilled it. I travel for work a lot. I have rented with many of the car rental agencies. Including Avis. However, never from this airport. When I picked up the car it was Friday morning about 8am and I had a reservation already. There were 3 people in line and it took about an hour to get to the attendant. The attendant was courteous and apologetic to myself and the 6 other people in line. However, it didn't seem there was anyone coming to help her. The car was fine clean and drove nice. I used it for four days returning it Monday. Upon returning the car there was a massive line with three people working check-in but they were unorganized and it took 20mins to have the attendant check my car in. Once he finished he asked if I bought the fuel and I said I'd didn't. So he gave me my contract and told me I needed to see the front desk. Again at the front desk and there were 2 people in line and one person behind the counter. It took 30mins to get to the attendant. When I told her why I was there she has no idea why I was told to come in... she printed my receipt and I was done. Such a waste of my time. I will not rent from this Avis again if I can avoid it. After renting a car for less than a full day I returned it in the exact condition I picked the car up in. Two months later I get this letter in the mail telling me that I'm being charged $175 for the pet hair found in the interior of the vehicle. I rented this car for a 45 minute drive to San Jose for a work meeting. I had one weekender bag and a travel pillow inside and that's it. Unless a couple of stray hairs fell off of my clothing or bags from my dogs at home in Michigan there was zero pet hair in this car. I knew I left my phone in the rental because I was talking on it in the parking lot, and when I got home I did not have it. It was about midnight when I called the office. I was told that they would have someone check the car and call me back. They did call me back and told me that two people checked the car and it wasn't there and perhaps someone turned it in to the lost and found at the main office. This seemed highly unlikely to me I was home in less than 15 minutes and I doubted that anyone took it to a closed office at midnight. I called the next day and it was not turned in. Rental Agent lied about insurance to my non-english speaking parents. Made them purchase full coverage when I told them to only purchase loss damage waiver. Call corporate and they confirm everything is optional. Please do not take advantage of people that don't fully understand english. I rented a car from Avis at Oakland airport in October. I had myself and 2 passengers with me. We are all non smokers. About an hour into our drive we started to notice smell of tobacco smoke probably the car spray was wearing off. I planned to report this upon return of the car. When I returned the car, there was no one in sight. A woman who worked there drove by and motioned and said to return the key to the box. Days later I received a letter from Avis saying I was being charged $250 cleaning fee for the smell of smoke. I asked to talk to a mgr, was told one would call me. No one did but I received an eImail with the picture shown and a picture of an odometer that was somehow proof of their bogus claim. The email said they would reduce the fee by half. What?? We don't smoke anything! This is a fraudulent attempt to get unwarranted money out of a customer's pocket. I am reporting this to the Better Business Bureau in California and on social media. I imagine I am not the only one subjected to Avis' fraudulent claims. By the way, I paid the extra daily insurance. So you can crash the car and walk away but they can claim you smoked marijuana in the car and get fined???? Open to suggestions. Deserves 0 stars but you have to choose one. UPDATE- I received another email from Avis saying to the effect that they had looked further and found that the previous renter had been charged with the cleaning fee for "excess evidence." Oct 15 Update - over a year since I posted that last review, and I have to say, these guys consistently have the best customer service and nicest people. Oh, and the cars are good too. 7/14 - Honestly, I cannot see why anyone would give this less than four stars. I rent here at least fortnightly, and I have never not had a positive experience. ONCE, I was charged for not turning in a key. I called the manager, explained the situation and it was easily resolved. There are always good cars, even when making last minute reservations. At the turn in, I have had the friendliest people EVERY, SINGLE TIME. Compared to Hertz, across the lot, Avis wins, hands down every time. After reading other users reviews, I see why they give poor marks. They're the people who use Priceline and Hotwire. I'm not excusing poor customer service, but if you want to be treated like royalty, treat the provider like royalty. Book through the Avis site, and don't quibble over $2-5/day. We are Acis Preferred customers. We rented a vehicle at this location prior to our arrival on 9/21/2021. When we arrived at the pickup counter, out names was not on the board. We went onside to obtain our rental and was provided keys to a pickup truck with out of state tags. I requested the representative provided us with a vehicle that had California license plates. She rudely stated that was all they had. When loading the vehicle we asked one of the employees if she could provide us with a recommendation for food as qe were not able to check in to our hotel. She suggested Black Bear Diner that is located a few miles from the airport rental car location. Upon arriving to the diner, we parked at the front door, made sure our items were not visible and locked the vehicle. Within 5 minutes after walking in we heard a woman screaming. The waitress informed us that our rental truck had been broken into as well as another rental vehicle that was parked directly behind us. When we returned to Avis, the same employee informed us that where we were referred to was a bad area and that the have approximately 20 vehicles a day broken into within that area. She said that there are criminals targeting rental cars heavily in the airport area. So, if that is the case, why is she referring people to restaurants in that area and why are they (Avis) not informing their customers about the safety in the area??? I cannot believe I actually have to write this review. It is unreal. Lets just say the Avis Rental Car was returned to the Avis Car location at Oakland Airport. Lot attendant took keys scanned car in and all was set. I even called Avis to affirm final charges. That was 4.5 hours ahead of return time! Yet they did not close out the transaction and while car is on their lot or rented back out they had the audacity to attempt to charge my card for way more than a one day charge. Luckily my bank alerted me and declined overcharge attempt. We asked the lot attendant for a receipt but he said it was not necessary and since we had pre paid we ignorantly took his word. My Nephew took a picture of the vehicle at the Avis lot given there was such a big line of cars. I contacted Avis several times and they state that it can take up to nine days to resolve their mix up. I said simply look at your cameras and lot and matter will be resolved in short order. How this can happen is beyond comprehension but word to the wise .Make certain you always demand a receipt whether you prepaid or not. I am waiting on Avis to fix this highly incompetent ordeal. Good thing our picture of the car return is time stamped and on their lot!! Its pure insanity but unfortunately a reality which Avis cannot seem to resolve for days!! I told them time of return to help them along but that is too helpful I guess. So we wait for them to find the car in their lot or find out who they may have rented it out to???? What can I say? This is the worst car rental location. Period. There is always, and I mean always, a line because 1-2 people max service both this Avis and Budget location. Busy time? Expect a 2 hour wait. Booked a certain car? Forget about it - chances are they don't have it! Yes, really, they constantly run out of cars! No joke! "Oh, you booked a luxury car, so sorry, we only have 12 passenger vans left". "Okay, I'll take an economy". "No, we literally only have 12 passenger vans left on the lot". Even if you do eventually happen to get a "car", unless it's brand new, chances are it will be dirty, will have under or over inflated tires, and damage that no one will mark at the exit booth but that you will be ultimately responsible for when you return the car. Oh, and don't forget to take a photo of your gas receipt next to the gas gauge because otherwise they will claim that you didn't return the car with a full tank of gas. See my previous review first for context: Although I have car rental insurance, I also disputed the fraudulent charge with my credit card company and they reversed the charge so I didn't have to use the car rental insurance (didn't want to give these people any free money, although I have insurance). If you are one of the victims as well, while disputing the charges, asked them to provide proof pics/videos of damages to the car, their rental history for the particular car you have rented to make sure they didn't rent it to anyone after you. For my case, I didn't ask for these documents in my first dispute and the credit card company cannot help since avis/budget provided rental agreement and their bogus repair paper work, but I disputed it second time and asked for those documents listed above and of course they were not able to provide those since it was a fraudulent charge, so after my second dispute, credit card company reversed the charges. Hopefully this review can help similar victims to fight the bogus charges. read more

I decided to give this rental agency another chance, after a previous situation when I had to stand in line for more than 2 hours just to pick up my rental car. This time, the rental process and car were not a problem, however, eight (8) days after returning my rental (which I paid for in advance), an additional $314 was charged to my credit card. The Avis website is now showing in error that I kept the car for an additional four (4) days. I actually - foolishly - obeyed a little sticky note left on the dash of the car that advised that I place personal items out of sight when I parked the vehicle. I was routed to everywhere but the counter until it was after-hours and I got through to a recording that they had closed. I filed a claim online, my only recourse. And nothing. My item wasn't found. But I know it was there. And I know these people are THIEVES. Avis, you should take better care of your customers; especially your Preferred. Stay away! AVIS has thieves working for them. I accidentally left an expensive item in the rental car. Saw it before I dropped it off and just forgot to grab it. Called them as soon as I got off my plane. It was time consuming to actually speak to someone about it. I filled out a report. This was on Thursday. Today, of course, they contacted me to say they didn't find the item in the car I know was left there. Clearly whichever employee serviced the car stole my property. Stupid me for leaving it behind. I didn't have any issues getting the car. All the "Optional" Charges were a pain to figure out if I needed them or not. I did take the valet to the airport instead of waiting for the rental bus which was great but not sure if it was $25.00 worth. Be aware of gas scam at this Avis location. After leaving the parking lot, I had the chance to take a closer look at the receipt. Avis was charging me $26.09 for fuel service, claiming that when the car was rented out to me, there was 21.5 gallons of fuel and when I returned it, there was only 19.1 gallons. At a rate of $9.990/gal and including tax, I was charged $26.09. I was appalled and this is why: 1. First of all, I checked the gas tank capacity of this specific car online and the approximate volume was indeed 21.5 L. I find it incredibly suspect that the gas volume was measured to be the exact volume that was listed on the website. 2. How am I supposed to verify the volume of fuel in the car when it was rented out to me and how am I supposed to verify that the exact volume of fuel to the tenth decimal place was replaced upon return of the vehicle? 3. I wasn't aware your Avis associates were able to eyeball gasoline volume to the tenth decimal place from just glancing at the car from the outside. If that is indeed the case, they should certainly take their incredible talents outside of Avis. 4. I filled the gas tank up until it clicked and even added a bit more just in case prior to returning the car. There is no way I burned 2.4 gallons (52.8 miles according to the car's city fuel efficiency rating of 22 mpg) in a matter of minutes (from nearby gas station to rental car location). Imagine being told that you only filled 19 and one-tenths gallons of gasoline in an unsubstantiated 21 and one-half gallon tank even though you just filled the tank to as much as you possibly could. I was fortunate enough that I wasn't running late to a flight or needed to check in at the airport. I live locally and was able to swiftly return to the Avis counter and demand my refund. The supervisor did not argue, did not put up a fight, did not check the car, or explain to me how these measurements were generated. She reversed my charges without me having to say much of anything. This leaves me to suspect that this sort of thing happens often and with the intent to scam customers of their money, especially those with greater priorities on their minds like catching a flight. read more

After reading some of the reviews here, I just wanted to let people know there are good employees at this facility as well! I am not an employee of Avis or know anybody here. I did have a rental car last week and forgot my remote control in the car when I dropped it off. While I was in flight, I received a call regarding the found remote. The next day, a lovely agent, Manaima, called me again to confirm the remote was mine. We made arrangements to send it back and that afternoon it was dropped off at FedEx. Received the remote in quickly and in working condition. They could have just thrown it away, but didn't. So a BIG thank you to this team for saving me a headache and cost of buying a new remote control! On arrival and departure, the agents were very nice, greeting and guiding customers getting off the bus and when returning the car. I've been an Avis customer for years, and this location and this team were happier and more helpful than others I have experienced across the US! read more

NO BUSINESS TO YOU MORONS FROM US. Got a 'dirty' car from them after waiting for 1.5 hours (I did make a reservation). When I inspected the car, it was dirty. If I wanted a cleaner car, I had to wait for another hour. At that point I had already waited enough and just took the not-so-clean car and returned it on time (It was an 8-day rental). 7 weeks after I returned the car, I get a notice slapping me with a charge of $250 for 'smoke odor'. My friend and I who rented the car don't even smoke. It's impossible that we left smoke odor in the car. It may have been the smoke odor from the dirty car that we had received. I have been trying to contact them since I received the notice. Tried calling them 20+ times, but they hardly take the call (They just have the one number where we can call, I mean, Really? One number? Are we living in the 60s?). If by miracle they do take the call, I am put on an infinite hold. If I do get out of my way and call them during off-peak hours, AND my call gets picked up, AND I'm not put on an infinite hold, I'm asked to explain the whole story AND I'm told that the manager would give me a call back. This has happened 4 times now and the manager hasn't called me yet. I wonder if they even have a manager, coz whenever I have asked for the manager, the ONLY response I have got is the standard - "Manager is in a meeting". I also sent an email to them but no response. Overall, it seems like they're slapping customers with random charges and when the unhappy customers reach out to them, they don't attend to them. Many of my friends and I have been regular AVIS customers, some of us are even 'AVIS Preferred' members. I use this facility about 6 times a year. Always find employees to be friendly and helpful. However the shuttle busses are notoriously understaffed. Such an unpleasant way to start and end a trip (waiting outdoors and standing on overcrowded busses). I realize that Avis may not have direct control over this, but as a tenant of the facility they should demand better service for their customers.
