I first would like to give a BIG thank you to agent Maelany and the driver who was able to retrieve my lost necklace Zhan dee (There was one more lady but I didn't catch her name). I rented a car at Avis and placed my necklace on the dashboard for a quick second and it quickly slid towards the front window (forever lost in a black hole now). I tried EVERYTHING I could to get my necklace out for 2 days but nothing worked for me. Once I was at the airport to return the car I had to make peace with the idea of my necklace being gone forever. I told the agent how bummed I was before I left. I turned in the keys and off I went to the terminal. Shortly after taking the shuttle to the terminal and checking in my bags I get a call from an unknown number. It was Avis letting me know that my necklace was saved!! Incredible that they even cared to try shortly after I left! But then to call me and tell me! I appreciate them being honest with me and letting me know! Thank God I had just enough time to return to the car rental location and pick it up! Thank you, again for your hard work and honesty!! Woof! There are some really terrible reviews on this page; I'm not invalidating their experiences, but please allow me to sprinkle a little positivity in this space. I was in need of a rental car during my stay in Hawaii, and since I'm an Avis Preferred member I decided to book one with them. I also get a discount with Avis through my job, so that pretty much sealed the deal for me. I booked a couple of months before my trip, and was able to choose from a number of vehicle types. I also got confirmation and reminder emails between my booking and my arrival in Hawaii which I appreciated. When I landed in Hawaii it was easy enough to follow the signs to the rental car stations. It seems close enough to walk but there are shuttles by baggage claim which I took advantage of. I was able to go directly to the Avis Preferred counter and before I knew it I was driving off. The car was clean and drove well - it got me where I needed to go and that's really the most I could ask for. Returning was super easy - there are clear signs once you enter HNL leading to the drop off. An agent met me there and the checkout process was fast and easy. Overall, I had a completely seamless experience with Avis at HNL and will definitely utilize them again for future travels. read more

Poor communication and lack of policy transparency that had that became very costly to me. Avis did not do anything to help me resolve a simple situation. I rented a Tesla Model 3 here, and when I returned the car I realized I forgot the EV cables at the hotel. I told the attendant I could return to the hotel or have them mailed back to Avis, but she mentioned that she already checked in the car and returning the cables would not help, and to call customer service. A few days later I get a huge bill on the EV cables (MORE than the retail cost of the cables from Tesla), and I call customer service now that I have the charge to my credit card on my bill. Customer service states that if I returned the cables within 72 hours, I would not have been charged but they cannot do anything at all even if I return the cables. I was NOT told about the 72 hour policy when I returned the car and if the attendant was aware of this and would have told me, it would have saved me a lot of anxiety and over $300. read more

Did not get a run down of my bill, nor even got to ensure if we got down all the existing damages. We rented baby seats, and guess what? In context, we always, always, rent from Emtetprise- but this trip.my sister said she'd rent a car for us. She used Priceline, paid 1200, and we picked up car. Oh..they don't have the car size we needed and for only $29.95/day we can upgrade (first predatory act), then we did,.. agreed to pay the gas upfront, and were told $80, nope $128.00, and after saying NO, to collision, got charged for collision. After said and done we were charged an ADDITIONAL 800+ bucks. The math; the $79.29/day car ended up costing $215.89/day, thats a 278% increase. And Avis, is requesting a copy of the invoice for our dispute. Come on. read more

This shop needs a lot of work. Probably the worst airport rental experience I've had and that's saying a lot when compared to others such as LAX, LAS, and ATL. Ask for QR code to expedite registration but there's no wifi and minimal to no reception to even utilize this preregistration. After finally getting to the desk, the car was not ready at 12:30pm despite a 11:00am reservation. GSR would not add my Preferred Plus membership to the RSVP because it was in my wife name. He said they're behind and don't have a vehicle ready for us. GSR went to talk to a manager and we were sent to F20 which was a Budget vehicle. We loaded the vehicle up and right as we were ready to head out....the car had less than half a tank of gas. We went to ask the lady about it. She refused to provide us with another vehicle because they were all booked. She said all they could do was send someone for gas which we ended up forced to do, adding another 15-20 minutes to the wait time. So with a RSVP of 11am, we were not able to leave the parking lot until 12:50pm. Was not able to pickup my car until 2 hrs after I had scheduled it. The line was short, but as soon as we got through the line... We just sat in the parking garage, wondering if the car would ever arrive. I have "Avis Preferred" (because I have a credit cad with a ridiculous annual fee) and it seemed to do absolutely nothing to lessen the wait. When I dropped the car off I had to wait in line. At almost every rental agency I've been to, you drop off the car and hitch the shuttle or walk into the airport. Not here. Lines on both ends of the rental. Some employees typed and looked and typed for 15 minutes and eventually said "I guess this is good for us if it's good for you", and it had a $0.00 balance. I always rent via Avis. As a preferred member with a decent discount code, I find the rates and service to be a good balance. At HNL the rental cars are right across the drive from baggage, arrival and departure. After crossing the drive, there is a elevator that takes up a level to where the counters are if you don't have a reservation. Another set of escalators or elevators take you to the floors above where each rental company location is indicated via signage. For some reason there seemed to be a lot of folks without reservations. It was a bit confusing trying to figure out where preferred with reservations go. I was able to ask a person in an avis booth and they directed me to my vehicle via a parking aisle and space number. The process including agreement was all on via the app on the phone. After loading the car and getting things set up, you exit with drivers license as ID in hand, show it to the attendant at the exit gate and away you go. Have a general idea of the freeway you are taking and destination and follow the signage. I bring and plug in a stand alone Garmin GPS (updated) and my passenger uses her phone to get direction too. We found the traffics to be heavy and slow on the freeways and highways. Lots of construction too. We took our time since there was no other choice. We didn't drive much but when we did, we took Shaka Guide audio gps tours which was good fun every where we went, KoOlina, Circle island, North shore, East side, Waikiki. Upon return we filled up at a Circle K on Nimitz Hwy. Then followed the signs to rental return. You pass the airport lei stands. Did you know that most leis are able to be brought back to the main land? Orchards leis are a okay to take home. Just let the agriculture inspection people know. Return of the car was extremely quick. The receipt we emailed to me. We happened to have two collapsible bag chairs (Walmart) that we didn't want to hassle with so we asked the Avis rental return staff if they would like them and they happily accepted. Glad they are not going to the trash. I like going to the majors that are quick and professional. We rented from a low cost rental car company the first time visited Hawaii. The service was very slow and the cars were older and worn out compared to the major companies. The low cost company had a hard sell on the insurance. Made you worry that they were going to find damage when you returned. Very glad to be an Avis regular. read more

Awful experience. Won't be renting from Avis again and I recommend everyone else to stay away. The long time to the counter I don't mind as much but when we got assigned a car and have to wait until "the next car is ready" for over an hour on the fourth floor, that's too much. Also when we finally got our car assigned (after 65mins of waiting) then someone else already had the keys to the car and drove off. I came in and the desk lady was super dismissive and was on her phone texting the whole time. So my customer experience wasn't great I picked up the vehicle and a few days later I got stopped by police because the inspection sticker was expired, since February so pretty much 4 months. Thankfully I didn't get a ticket. So I tried the Avis near the zoo in Waikiki and she unfortunately didn't have any cars and sent me to the one in the international market but they also didn't have any cars at this point I had lost about 1:30 of my time and I was super upset because I tried their 1800 and they gave me a live person after 4 try's and a lot of hold time and by the time I got a live person she dropped the call. So the person at the international market sent me to the airport location and when I arrive the young lady receiving the car asked if I was returning i specifically told her I was going to exchange and then she proceeded to close out the rental ‍ so my experience honestly was the worst from the beginning up to when I spoke to RUTH at the counter inside the location. She was super helpful and nice and apologized about everything she made me feel valued and honestly she is the reason this review went from 1-4 stars because if it wasn't for her I would put this shit at 1 she definitely cars about the customer I don't know why she doesn't run this place. This Avis location isn't great and they're fully aware of it. The way they operate reminds me why I'm dedicated to loyalty programs from the other competitors (#1). Where they fall flat is really their customer service: they're either really slow or super inadequate. During my lackluster times with them, it's been both. The part where people get lured in is usually the rental rate. I've managed to get away with somewhere between $40-60 a day, which for HNL standards is solid. The other reason I've ended up here is simply because other places have limited inventory. Pro tip: Try not to travel during popular holidays. (#2) However, I've only managed to score these on last minute hot deals (#3), I am aware that weekly rentals usually merit better deals on the daily rate, only to be ruined by their miscellaneous fees. Then there are the cars themselves which I can be describe as unkept. On more than one occasion I've dealt with some questionable cleanliness, especially on the interior of the car. Whether it's a sticky wheel, smudges everywhere, or suspect odors going on, I've managed to exchange it out by bringing a manager out to point out the obvious mishaps. Their fleet is a pretty boring variety of Dodges, Chevys, and some Jeeps but some just look really beat up. If there are other options, consider them. The only thing I appreciated about the Avis experience was the friendly shuttle bus driver. Just for that, they get an extra star. BEWARE! Avis will put your family at risk and then make you assume the financial liability for their mistakes. Avis rented our family a car that had almost all service lights on the dash illuminated. We brought this to the attention of the staff and they assured us that the car was safe to drive. Their car broke down on a highway putting our family in extreme danger and completely ruined our trip. After hours and hours of waiting with the police (whom were extremely helpful) for a tow truck, we finally were able to make it to safety. We then were without a rental car for the remainder of our reservation and wasted significant time in dealing with Avis. On a recorded line, an Avis supervisor assured us that since we followed their protocols, we would be reimbursed for the out of pocket tow expense that we incurred. For the inconvenience and the fact that we paid for days of a rental car that we did not get to use, we asked Avis for reimbursement. Avis is now telling us that we are financially responsible to pay the tow fee for their car that broke down and put our family's safety at risk. We have spent hours and hours on the phone, sending the required documentation they asked for, messaged their team via various communication channels only to be told (without any sympathy or understanding) that we are just out the expense for the tow and it's not their problem. Please please, do not make the same mistake we made renting with Avis. If anything happens to you in one of their vehicles (especially when it is their fault), you will be left completely high and dry. Unless you can afford picking up any additional expenses incurred related to your rental I would definitely not recommend Avis. What's even more upsetting is the complete lack of empathy, understanding, or critical thinking used in this situation. I know that someone will probably respond saying to reach out to XYZ email but we have already wasted so much of our time, I doubt anyone will actually be able to help us which is why I'm so adamant about sharing our story. AVIS IS RUNNING A SCAM at their Honolulu location and I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO RENT SOMEWHERE ELSE or return your vehicle in pristine condition with no trash or sand to be found. Short story - I'm an Avis Preferred Plus member. Car was not ready when we arrived and we could not skip the counter. We rented a full-size vehicle and like everyone on Hawaii we visited a few beaches and got a little sand in the car and in the trunk. If you've ever been to a beach and cleaned your car afterwards, it takes (at most) about 5 minutes to vacuum up beach sand. Probably the same amount of time Avis would have spent vacuuming and prepping the car for the next renter. Well, according to Avis, cleaning the sand resulted in an additional "detailing" expense of $125 that they charged to me. This is laughable and such an obvious scam judging by the other similar 1-star reviews on here with similar experiences. In fairness to Avis, here are the photos of what they describe as "excessive sand" so you can be the judge. If you think this costs $125 to clean, please give me a call, as I'd like to start cleaning cars for a living at that price! read more

Way back when, I was a manager at Enterprise Rent a Car. Avis/Budget is a different company but the major rental companies all operate under similar business models, so I knew what to expect and how to play the game. I usually use National but they were about $300 more; also, our firm's leisure contract with them no longer includes CDW. I've been Avis Preferred for a while, so I was able to skip the lines and have my credit cards all stored. I got to the Preferred booth and there was basically no line. There was some confusion with the initial reservation (this was completely my fault) and the rental agent was very friendly and helped me sort it all out. I'm in Hawaii for over a month and wanted something cool to drive. I had a midsize booked for around $1,050 (my firm has an amazing leisure discount). Intermediate SUVs (RAV4, Escape, etc.) would have been at least $2,100 if I had booked one beforehand. When prices for better cars are that high, I usually book the smallest car I am willing to accept. I asked the Avis Preferred agent about a potential upgrade to an SUV. She mentioned they had a Range Rover on the lot and quoted me around $31/day for the upgrade. Another important thing to know here is that upgrades are usually negotiable; I was able to get it down to $26/day. She took my license and CC, printed out my rental agreement, and sent me on my way. She was very friendly and nice to deal with. The total price for this rental was around $1,732 after taxes - for a month long rental for a Range Rover in Hawaii, that's pretty decent and WAY less than if I had booked the same car directly on Avis's website. Now the not so great. The Range Rover's audio totally died out on me about 9 days in. I called roadside assistance; they told me they would contact the HNL location and have another car in the same class waiting for me. I arrive at HNL. Return agent is friendly, looks everything over, and sends me to the Preferred booth. The rental agent I dealt with was very sympathetic and extremely friendly. I returned the defective Range Rover with 3/4 tank, she assured me she would waive the charge. I want to emphasize how every Avis employee I came into contact with during this entire experience was wonderful. The slightly annoying part was the switch out. They really tried to get me to take a Yukon XL Denali. I'm sure it's in the same class as the Range Rover and probably just as expensive. That being said, parking in Hawaii is intense and I was already struggling with the Range Rover; a Yukon XL Denali simply wouldn't work. They radioed down to the lot and were able to find another Range Rover. This Range Rover took over 30 minutes to materialize. Also, they parked it in the Budget lot despite there being multiple spaces in the Avis lot, so this required a walk which seemed unnecessary. All in all, I got a super nice rental car at a really good price. And again, all the Avis employees were amazing. The switch out was irritating, but still a good experience overall. If I have to switch this Range Rover out again, this review will definitely change. read more

Gosh, we got into HNL a little early - despite a snowstorm prior to our departure from O'Hare. I thought, this is marvelous!! I get to start my hula on the beach ASAP but...I was soooo wrong. I get to the counter on the 4th floor and we wait patiently. There are about 20 people waiting, It seems. Finally, they call my name and my car is waiting on the 3rd floor!! Hooray!! However, I get down there and it's the wrong paperwork and the car is for Seth. So I go back up to the 4th floor and that's when the poor customer service started. Instead of being next, I was placed back into the queue. Mind you, at this point, my group is long gone and newly arrived folks were getting their cars before me. The reviews on here for this Avis location look horrific, but I had a fairly quick and smooth experience when renting for a week in October 2022. As a Preferred member, I was able to skip the line and the paperwork. There was no line at the Preferred desk and I was at my car less than a minute after speaking to the Avis representative. There was no apparent way to mark existing damage (a number of scuffs and one notable dent) without any paperwork, so I just took some photos and videos before departing. There was leaving the rental area, but it moved at a steady pace and we were out about 10-15 minutes after getting into the car. Part of the reason for the line may be that the express checkout with the app's QR code wasn't working, so agents were manually processing a number of cars. As I was expecting to use the QR code, I didn't have any paperwork when I pulled up but the agent was able to locate our rental record and process it without any further input from me. Returning the car the next week was simple as well. I pulled up to the return area, the agent came over and glanced over the car and a receipt popped up in my email. I took, of course, some photos after returning just in case, but everything seems to have gone smoothly and we were back into the terminal for our return flight just a few minutes after drop off. I will note that my experience was probably helped by a) having Avis status and b) picking up and dropping off on less busy days (Sunday pickup, Saturday dropoff). read more

Honestly, if i could i would give this rental car service a 0. They rented us a van with an expired safety sticker by almost a year, therefore the car could be totally unsafe. Family members have called this place with them proclaiming "outstanding customer service" but it could'nt be further from the truth with them not being able to do anything about it. I was very disturbed to how they were being treated by their manager I believe. One) Ms.Trinity with the red shirt pony tail Thank you so much for your great customer service, and I really hope you and the other employees gets a much better occupation that appreciates you and your hard work! Two) It broke my heart over hearing trinity and her co workers that their done and their not needed. I believe this person was their manager whom was also standing on the side talking in some other language. I feel it's quite embarrassing to be put on the spot , and being told "YOU CAN GO HOME I Don't NEED YOU GUYS, bye!!!" Also what was sad hearing is the manager telling the other worker they can go home you can stay sis (is that sister or cousin) just saying....That manager was wearing a budget/Avis logo on her Aloha shirt. Three) Their shuttle drivers were speeding through the parking almost getting into an accident twice with customers and other workers with orange vests, and what was very disturbing is them laughing as if it was funny putting others in risk even their own life. Four) Car smelled like cigarettes, and the convertible hood won't close all the way and trunk at times won't open. Side note: Don't get convertible if you don't know how to properly use it!!! Avis/ Budget maybe you need to watch your employees carefully and I truly hope that this manager is not abusing her position on being favoritism, because everyone deserve to be treated good especially with what I witness on how hard working they were. I rented an economy car through Expedia at the Honolulu Airport for Payless Car Rental. When I arrived at the Honolulu Airport, you merely have to walk across the street to the Car Rental Center, don't have to take a shuttle. When I arrived to the Payless Rental they also have AVIS and Budget Card Rental in one area. Since no one was at the Payless counter, the AVIS guy took care of me. He saw my reservation was for an economy car but asked how many people in the car, when I said 3, he upgraded me to a full size Dodge Charger It was an easy process, found the car on the 4th floor, very easy, it was waiting for me with the keys inside and it was clean. Absolutely great experience, car ran great, no issues except finding an open gas station near the airport at 5am when I returned the car. Fill up the night before. When we returned the car at the Payless car rental return, we just had to leave the keys in the car and they sent me my rental car receipt via email. Recommend! read more

Horrible customer service at this location. The woman was rude at the counter, she acted like we were interrupting her conversation with her coworker. We were the only customers in line. She was very snappy towards any questions it was like we were wasting HER time, would not recommend-pick another rental place regardless of the price being lower. I dont know if it was because we rented a Tesla? Either way, you don't snap at customers, she was also rudely telling us that there is only one supercharger in the aiea area, and asked what hotel we were staying at, she said I don't think they have a charger there(they did) and tried to talk us into another vehicle which was $100 more per day. Yes the charger is out of the way but you don't use much energy getting it to the airport since it's 8 minutes away from the charge station. She also lied to us, she said if it's over charged we will get charged $40, and if it's under charged we will get charged $115. We called Avis customer service 800 number, they said no you will not get charged for being over the percentage of when we picked it up. Wow, this Avis location DOES NOT represent many Avis locations that I typically rent from. The preferred section closes at 7pm, so Avis preferred means absolutely nothing after 7pm. There were only TWO people running both the Avis and Budget lines, which were VERY long. After a long flight, no one wants to stand in line for another hour! And the car I prepaid and rented was not available..of course not. I would HIGHLY recommend another rental company at this airport! Come on Avis, you can do better than this! read more

We picked up our car today first one they have smelt like smoke and 2nd one was filthy. We have an 18month old who was just not having it so we just took what was given but I was very disappointed with the cleanliness of the vehicle. What happened to the level of service Avis offers? Yikes! We've always had such great experiences w/this company but today was let down by a landslide. Car wasn't washed, you could tell it was used by tourists prior because of all the sun block on the arm rests, door, chairs, sand on seats, on floor, between chairs. Sides of chairs you could see liquid stains hopefully it was from a drink YIKES! So BEWARE if you care check your car 1st before you leave the lot. I notice rates got cheaper even for the bigger SUVS but damn is this what we should expect? If so, no thank you! I'll try another company next time. read more

Based on the reviews, I was really worried about renting a car from here. My choices were limited since my departing flight at the end of my stay was at 7am, which meant I wanted to return the car close to 5am (and I wanted them to be open, instead of just offering afterhours drop-off) Pickup and drop-off went smoothly. I reserved an economy car, and it was not available for another hour or so. So they gave me a free upgrade to a standard car. I planned 30 minutes for the drop-off process, and it took maybe 5 minutes. You drive up, and the employee comes and scans the windshield barcode and takes your keys. Super easy. The car was not super clean, and it had scratches and dings all over. But I don't mind this because it makes me worry less about the car. I always buy the extra insurance even though I have car insurance. I don't want to deal with paperwork or deductibles in case something should happen. I'm pretty sure that I returned the car with extra scratches because Hawaii parking lots are just not safe. We would come back to the car and notice a scratch, even though I parked far away from other cars and was very careful. The car also had no floor mats, which was inconvenient because I wanted to shake them out before returning the car. (I saw the extra sand fees that people were charged in other reviews.) So we ended up picking up the sand and leaves by hand before returning. (The leaves were already there when we picked up the car) Overall, I am happy with the HNL Avis location. I will update my review if they charge me extra fees later. I suggest you download your receipt right when they email it to you. I waited three days, and the link had expired. Oh, yeah. Horrible Horrible Horrible!!! Waited in a long line for an hour to sign the paperwork. Then waited another hour upstairs for them to bring the car. After waiting another hour I finally asked what's the hold up. The lady said it was going to be another hour wait. I told the lady they could communicate that with all the people waiting instead of having us wait for hours in the heat. They didn't communicate with any of us (about 40 people waiting in line for their car). We finally left and got an Uber. read more

Not a fan of their policies. I reserved my time until noon and they have a 30 minute grace period. They ended up charging me a $35 late fee that I came in at 12:23pm and claimed I picked up the rental car at 11:36am.
