I hired a car and was later charged for tyre damage that was clearly pre-existing. The damage was recorded on the rental agreement before I collected the vehicle, and I was told at pick-up that I would not be held responsible for existing issues. When I returned the car, I explained this to the staff and refused to sign the damage report, as the same damage had already been noted. The agent assured me that no charge would be applied until the matter was resolved. However, Avis still charged my card without authorisation. I emailed customer service on 16 September, received only an automated acknowledgment, and have since had no response despite multiple follow-ups. This is unacceptable service and poor handling of a clear dispute. I've now had to seek a chargeback through my card provider. I strongly advise other customers to take detailed photos of their vehicle at collection and return, and to be cautious about pre-existing damage claims at this branch. read more

I booked through Budget which I have done many times in the past with no issue. You'd think that as a returning customer they would've been more understanding and willing to work with me when I made a human error and booked my rental to begin 1 day too early. I was not contacted on the day I should've been there to pick it up, when I arrived the next day they had to void my original booking and charge me a premium to "rebook." I ended up having to pay double my original booking amount. I understand it was my fault but the car sitting at the airport one extra day should not have meant I'd have to pay double. The agent was not helpful or understanding of this and it was an unfortunate way to start a vacation. I will never be booking through budget again. read more

My KLM flight was cancelled. Since there were no other possibilities, I had to fly a day later. Avis Edinburgh airport gets this information automatically. I tried to reach Avis. All their phone numbers online didn't work. So much for a company that earns money by delivering service. When I finally did get hold of them, they referred me to my touroperator. Again no service. My touroperator in the Netherlands heard from Avis that I wasn't there to collect the car the first 24 hours, therefore I had to do a new booking. (So they can easily re-hire the car I paid for to another customer.) This kind of practice is not worthy a company that lives of delivering service, but is showing their inreliablity and is downright criminal practice. What a scam! Avis? Don't do it. Hopefully you will have better luck with a real professional company. Richard van der Poll, the Netherlands read more

Avoid this company or have regrets. Period. The worst car rental experience ever. The mafia like man who attended to me said he will give me auto against manual I paid for, at no extra cost, if I pay for extra cover which I was going to buy anyways. I took the car with many dents including alloy the front passenger side wheel (see photo). I took photos right at their car parking bays before driving off. I returned the car at Glasgow airport and returned the key through their drop box as their office was not open. To my surprise they sent me an email with a signature that was not mine indicating I accepted the damages on the car but will cost me £0. Fraud. Fraud. Fraud. No damage occurred under my care. I have proof of photos on my iPhone with date stamps. They must have been charging uninsured persons large amounts for repair they never carry out. Fraud. Run and run away from this company. You have been warned. read more

You rented a vehicle to me and my family with bald tires. You put my family in danger as a tire exploded on the side of a narrow rural road on a Saturday with no services for over an hours drive. The cell service was spotty and it took several almost half an hour calling from every phone in the car to reach AA after being unable to reach Avis for help. After replacing the tire that exploded, the tire pressure light kept going off for all other tires. We had to stop at multiple gas stations along the trip to constantly fill them with air and when we called Avis- they wanted us to drive an hour out of our way to go to their nearest service station. This after the flat tire and subsequent tire pressure issues already made us miss out on part of our plans. I have been fighting with Avis on the phone for weeks just to have them say that they are sorry for my experience and that they won't reimburse me for the tire. I guarantee you they turned around and rented that same car with the same bald tires to someone else. What's it going to take, Avis? Someone driving off a cliff after their bald tires makes them swerve or hydroplane for you to listen? Never again. Don't rent from them! And check your tires!!! Refuse to leave until fixed. Oh! And if the tires weren't enough, multiple service lights (other than tires" pressure) turned on during our trip. Avis does not care about their customers. read more

I always find it funny reading reviews which clearly come from disgruntled customers who's stories grows arms and legs lol Their poor planning is the rental cars emergency such as not bringing the correct documentation but the company should rent. Never mind the asset costs thousands oh no it's the companies fault you didn't bring the driving license. They take cars with damage excesses and don't think maybe I should throughly inspect and document with my smart phone images and videos....literally takes minutes. The amount of waiting in line complaints but they all want the cheapest price and pick up at an AIRPORT where the car rental company has no control over flight delays etc so yeah there will be lines. Plus Mr didn't bring his liense and wants to argue with the agent for an hour holds everything up but oh no it's the companies fault. The I booked a BMW 3 series sixt months ago,........ it clearly says category of car then gives you an example (BMW) or similar. Also why do they think the car sits for 6 months in a parking space waiting for them. Cars make them money like come on!!! of course it will be out on rent and maybe it will be damaged needing a service etc that's why they can't guarantee the BMW you think is waiting for you. I could go on and on I would love to hear the actual truth of these reviews from the agents cause I think these reviews are a false representation a mean why would ANY company go out their way to "SCAM" people especially reputable companies that have been around for decades lol mistakes can happen of course but come one, oh I love the ones who go on a rant about Avis as an example and say " I went with Hertz and ended up getting perfect service I advise using them" only if you go to Hertz review the same person is complaining on their page. Or look at their profiles and all their reviews are complaints. Says it all! Don't take these reviews seriously unless you can hear the other side! read more

Returned the car at Edinburgh airport (I picked up elsewhere). For the first 5 minutes there was nobody there to receive the car. When someone turned up it took me another 5 minutes to ensure they dealt with the correct reservation. Small things, but issues you can do without when catching a plane. read more

I reserved an SUV from the Glasgow location to be returned at Edinburgh airport. No SUV available. Instead was given an 'upgrade' to a Mercedes station wagon past its service date. GPS didn't work even after 45 minutes of tinkering by an employee. Instead was charged to rent a mobile device. There were several other automatic SUV's on the lot and when I asked about them was told they were reserved for others. I made my reservation in April for September. WTF? I have been battling with their customer service for two months. They 'generously' deducted the GPS charge but then jacked up the rental price from the original estimate of $1700 to $2600 and will not explain why. I've been an Avis customer for 30 years. Never again. If I could give 0 stars I would. read more

BE WARNED: Avis Edinburgh Airport operates like a criminal entity not a consumer-based business. My Fellow reviewers are not lying! I implore you to avoid car rentals from Avis in Edinburgh- they WILL rip you off! Edinburgh is a very walkable city, but if you must rent go with another provider. Upon returning our car in the dark very early in the morning a Thuggish employee all but threatened us telling us we tore the front tire. Upon looking at the tire is was clearly tire-rot. Reach out to me for pictures. Suspiciously, The three other tires on the car were almost new Michelin tires. The tire in question was an old worn out tire. Circumstantial evidence shows they put an old tire on the vehicle prior to our rental hoping some Americans would notice and end up mind buying them a new Michelin to match the others. I would not be surprised if all the new tires were added and paid for the same way! By the way, when we picked up the car, it had NO rear wiper,(I have photos). The employee said don't worry about it. So what happened? It rained in Scotland! We had to pullover several times in our trip wasting time and missing appointments due to this. But Avis did not care. We are walking dollar signs to them, not human beings. This incident crushes my trust in Avis as a company - I will not rent from them again- even though they are preferred by my employer. (Which I hope to change). Sincerely disgusted with Avis. read more

Rented a car in Scotland and got a puncture in the sidewalk of the tire. No spare, no inflation kit so Avis sent roadside assistance to put a spare then follow me to a repair shop where I had to pay for the tire. Get home from vacation and they hit me with the cost of the tire even though I already paid the shop directly for the same brand and size the car had on it. Also the car had lights on and sensors that didn't work the whole time. Terrible service and quality. Avoid and go to enterprise, I will. read more

If I could give ZERO stars I would. Worst experience ever. First off, take pictures of every angle, every side, the roof, the interior, the tires and anything else you think of. Nobody inspected the car with me before we left. I did a scan of the car, and did t see any dents or scratches. I drove more careful than ever, I'm from the US and I'm not an expert at driving on the wrong side of the road. Therefore I went slow and steady. When we turned the car in, they said there was a tire nic and I would be charged for it. I told him that wasn't because of me, I didn't hit or scrape anything. He didn't care and wrote me up. He said it was my responsibility to take pictures of everything. Second thing, take pictures of the tires!!! I'm not so sure that Avis agent didn't cut the tire himself. The tire had maybe 25% life left in it. Next thing I know, they charged my card $606.28 for a tire!!! No freaking way. That tire almost ready to be replaced. They still haven't sent me any kind of documentation for the tire, they just charged my card $606.28!!!! My wife rents from Avis for work and she usually rents 75-85 days a year. They just lost that business. The funny thing had I been in South America I would have take pics and videos of everything because I would expect to get scammed there. Never in a million years I thought I'd ever get scammed in Scotland. STAY AWAY or get scammed. read more

Awful. I was extorted a thousand dollars for a scuff Mark on the car that I wasn't responsible for. I was told the estimate was a temporary amount and that it would go down after the assessment so that I would sign. I had to catch a flight back to the US so I had to leave and sign, but I was billed the full amount for a scuff that looked like it would wipe off anyway. The sad thing is, I work extensively at their HQ in New Jersey. Not feeling the love here! Felt scammed and ripped off. Complained to the manageress on a return visit, but was only paid lip service. I now use Enterprise car club, which is much better. Be sure to photograph the car before leaving, or you might pay for someone else's damage like I did. Avoid. read more

In September I hired a car from Edinburgh airport to visit family. The staff were friendly and nice but I had problems being charged for preexisting damage to the car. The car was very muddy at the bottom of the car but when I saw extensive scratches to the car not shown on the paperwork I contacted the Avis representative. They assured me that I would not be charged for this damage but marked my copy of the paperwork to note the damage. Renter beware - this is the only place they take note of the damage. So when I returned without the paperwork I was charged over 500 gbp. Surprisingly though, when I returned the car, they photographed the damage and emailed them to me with estimates of damage invoiced. Subsequently given this thorough return process I question how this damage managed to go previously undocumented in their system. I felt scammed. Fortunately I was able to recover the paperwork from my family and after a month the charge was reversed and Avis apologized for their mistake. In future I would take more time to inspect any rental car taking photographs, and insist on having any marks recorded. Sadly I will be hesitant to use Avis again in the near future. read more

Scammed for insurance I did not need by lying employees who told me my American insurance (through Expedia) was not valid. Should have read reviews here before leaving the US read more

This Avis location exercised fraudulent behavior and I recommend fully avoiding this particular location.  Upon returning our car, the receiving agent identified a dust spot on the front, right bumper and took a photo of the spot calling it a scratch/scrape and refusing to determine the extent of the dust and whether or not any true damage existed to the car.  Upon his identification, we wiped the dust off and noticed the original photo taken was grossly misleading (see attached photo to this review) and did not warrant the assessed damage charge of £415.  We asked the agent to retake the photo and he refused.  We then asked to speak to his supervisor and he pointed to the building they were located, but refused to allow us to speak to his supervisor before charging our card for nonexistent damages.  Additionally, we found his demeanor to be combative and unprofessional when we challenged his misleading photo.  We eventually met with his supervisor, the manager of the branch, who promised to physically inspect our returned car and to send an email directly to us upon her review.  We never received an email or received a response to our outreach.  Fully avoid this location as their deceitful behavior will leave you disgruntled, disempowered, and with less money. read more

My car rental at first seemed to go smoothly, until I got home from my trip and was charged an extra $100 pounds for a tire repair. This is despite the fact that I paid for extra insurance that included tire replacement coverage. I feel that I was lied to directly by these people. Further, they refused to offer me an invoice, nor to charge the correct credit card, so now I cannot seek reimbursement from my credit card coverage either. I cannot imaging this going worse. read more

I booked online, arrived to collect my car and they had failed to say anywhere I needed my passport as a foreign driver... As it was the afternoon I couldn't pick it up until the next day, and they did not subsidise my hire at all. Round two, they added another 100 pound to the bill because I was under 25 (even though you enter this information online). They then tried to charge me extra for a GPS even though this was also included in the online quote, but eventually did add this in. I was told that, because my booking was until the Monday evening, I could just bring it back in first thing Tuesday morning at no extra charge. Best thing; the car was nice to drive and immaculately clean. When I returned, they tried to charge me an extra 80 pound for the "additional day". Only after a lot of effort on my behalf did I get this waived... I will never use Avis again. Just try to add to your bill at every opportunity. Apparently no consistent communication between staff or clients. I suggest you look elsewhere for car hire. read more

Stay away! I PREPAID rentalcars.com for a 5 day rental. When I arrived at the rental car counter after a long flight, Budget chose to ignore this reservation, and instead sold me a replacement car, which cost me an additional GBP 572.92! I was in no position to negotiate. These folks are thieves, proceed at your own risk. Note that Budget and Avis are both owned by the same outfit in Edinburgh, so renting from one is the essentially same as renting from the other. read more

Do not rent a car with budget. I rent a car at Edinburgh Airport at Budget, which belongs to Avis Budget Group, Inc. The salesman was very polite and told me that there was a free upgrade of my car. I told him I just needed a GPS and he told me that it was included. He gave me the contract and there were several items that I didn't want and he told me that it was all included in what I had already paid. I asked him several times if he was sure about that and he told me with a smile that he was sure. The surprise was that they charged me 5 times more than what I had originally paid and I can't do anything about it. So do not sign any contract with budget... ever... you'll come home and discover they charged whatever they wanted! read more

I rented a car from these people so that I could drive to the islands on my honeymoon. Putting aside the extra fees they charge once you actually get there, they gave me a car that was unsafe. I didn't find this out until I was in Fort William, when the car started to jolt and grind at high speeds. I called them, and told them they should cancel the reservation and pick the car up, so I could continue on with my honeymoon. Their response was that I had a contract and I had to go with the car to Inverness (a three hour drive each way) in order to get a replacement. They didn't care that I was on my honeymoon and couldn't take a day out to goto their repair shop for a day; they just didn't want to lose their money. I spoke to both local people and people with the (national, I assume) 1-800 number, and all of them were completely rude, uncaring, and unhelpful. Frankly, it was the worst customer service experience I've ever had---ever. read more
