I did the owner a favor and took a car that hadn't been cleaned because he didn't have what I reserved available otherwise and I didn't want a small car. The car was only on 1/4 tank of gas which he assured me he would remember. He told me to bring it back with only the same gas and that in the future he'd even give me an upgrade. He did me a favor back by charging me for the missing gas and essentially scammed me. I'll go out of my way to never use this location again. He pretends to be "friendly" like he really appreciates his customers or you but it's a lie. read more

No car available on the day after I prepaid. I would give 0 stars if possible. I prepaid for a car but on the morning of the rental I was told that there were no cars available. The local employee was of no help and did not offer any suggestions on how to get another car. Somewhere in the fine print of their agreements, they claim that they don't guarantee a car. Don't rent a car at this branch. They lie on the paperwork. They overcharged for a rental and say that the tank was a gallon short. I filled the gas tank as close as I possibly could to this branch. They didn't check the tank before filling out the paperwork saying it was short. The woman who handed me the paperwork couldn't explain to me why the amount on the receipt didn't match the amount I was supposed to be charged and threw out the initial paperwork that she said she needed to "check the car back in." She ignored my questions about why the gas tank was marked as short. This is not an honest business. I would pay more to rent from somewhere where they don't lie. read more

Booked car through 800 number after flight being cancelled and they called me when o was already on the uber from the airport to tell me they didn't have cars. The girl that was there was rude and indifferent and would not try to help. After I told her no other locations had cars, i heard her in the phone telling the same thing to other stranded passengers with the same problem that she didn't have cars and their reservations were not good. She just didn't bother calling the central reservation line to let them know they didn't have cars and not send people to this location. Car hadn't been cleaned and the gas tank was only half full. I returned it will a half full tank and was charged for gas. Owner, who works the desk I think, was very busy but she was nice but if she's too busy to make sure car is clean and gas is full, perhaps she should have help. Also, they close the business at weird hours. I'm assuming when they're not busy. When I returned the car, during business hours, no one was there so I couldn't explain the gas situation. Tried calling several times but the number is always routed to a regional switchboard. It's too bad because this location is close and convenient but I won't rent from them again. read more

Good location near UT, but if you arrive late in the day they almost definitely will not have the car you requested. You will have to pay extra for the rental if you are not 25 but if you go through UT you don't have to because it's a corporate rate. I was impressed when I arrived about three minutes before their closing time on a Sunday afternoon, fully expecting them to be already gone for the evening, but they were still there. Saved me the cost of an extra day's rent! They do offer pick-up service, but no drop-off which is a shame. read more

My boyfriend and I rented a vehicle yesterday at the 1610 W. 35th Street location in Austin. He was buying a car in San Antonio and rented the vehicle so that I wouldn't have to drive back by myself at night if we took my car. To say that this experience was disappointing is putting it mildly. 1. He reserved an economy car. The vehicle that Sheila, the operator, had available was a pickup truck. 2. The truck was parked way in the back lot of a lot used by multiple businesses. She pointed us in the direction of the back lot and said it's back that way. Honestly, it felt like the back of a junk yard and we half expected guard dogs to come out. 3. We got to the truck and it was filthy. There were bird droppings all over the truck, and leaves and garbage inside. There was also a footprint on the passenger side glove box, and cigarette burns on the driver's seat. 4. He reserved an economy car to save on gas. The truck obviously used more fuel, thus making it less economical. 5. My boyfriend had called Enterprise previously, but booked with Avis. They called him back and offered him an Infiniti QX50 for the same price. Because he had already booked at Avis, he didn't want to cancel. He should have cancelled the reservation, even with a penalty. 6. The operators in San Antonio were equally appalled by the condition of the truck and apologetic. If this is the quality of cars and operators (with exception) at Avis, we will definitely never rent from Avis again. We felt like Avis didn't care enough about us as customers to do the minimal work to get the car cleaned, give us the vehicle that we requested, or even escort us to the car. read more

BE CAREFUL! THIS IS AN UNRELIABLE BUSINESS. Get your rental at the airport: it is more reliable, you have backup options and you'll save yourself stress and money. MY STORY: I used Avis on 35th street twice to rent vans for my business and had an experience similar to what happened in Carol's review below, but worse. The second time I worked with this company, Avis on 35th street decided to give the van I that had reserved to the University of Texas for a last minute rental instead of honoring their commitment to me. (I had made my reservation a month earlier.) Not only did Avis on 35th st. have no van for me but they also didn't make any attempt to get one until my stress level got so high that I began yelling at the lady behind the desk who clearly didn't care that I had a full van load of customers who I would be picking up late (if ever) because she had given my van away to a bigger customer. THE FOLLOW UP: Avis never made any amends for the stress they caused me and damage they did to my business's reputation (by making me an hour late). I paid full price for the late van and NEVER used them again. This occurred about three years ago and my business still suffers from the repercussions of the unreliability of Avis on 35th street. read more

these guys are all crooks, they commit fraud on a daily basis and so far evidentally nobody has sued them-class action would do wonders to straighten this organized crime syndicate. they will rent you cars online-prepaid rentals and then not have cars available at any of their rental locations in all of austin! i been renting from them for a year now for business and have nothing but stress, major heavy financial losses not to mention days of lost time because of their don't give a shit we are gonna get your money attitude! they often will bill multiple credit cards for the same rental it is common practice for them to bill mulitple times during a single rental as well. i'm writing this because yesterday i went in to either extend my 2 week rental for 2 additional weeks or close the current rental and open a new two week rental (the car they gave me for the previous two weeks smelled like 20 people smoked for hours with the windows up-i had to drive aroud with the windows down or vomit). the idiot at the counter was quick to remind me he'd have to keep me in the current heep of shit because he didn't have any cars available-(there must have been 25 avis cars sitting idle at that location center of the hills, a7u, 7010 hwy 71 west, ste345, austin, tx 78735) so ok i will take the loss because i was at lunch and had to get back to work somehow, so he extends it for another two weeks bills my card $1,400 for a $250/wk rental and tells me it did not go through on his system! i call my bank and had them on speaker and they clearly told him that yes it had gone through and was approved! he smiled and ignored the whole conversation! he told me to rebook it and try again! this time i book it and the rate doubles on me and jumps to $850/wk for the same pile of smelly crap and he informs me last rental i had recieved a free upgrade because i am in the presidents club at avis-he refuses to give me the upgrade so i book it anyways and i was then charged another $1,300 and said there was a problem-after the third time he charged me it finally went through for $750 plus a $250 deposit-i left in disbelief. after going through my bank accounts i realised he charged me $1,300 two times plus $750 for current rental and he also charged me for the previous rental return on a seperate account for $560 without informing of all this. so at this point i am out $3,910 dollars for what should have cost $560 for the first two weeks and the same for the next two weeks! they owe me $2,790 and they have shut off their phone, online chat and any other contact methods and im pissed! i needed another car for the weekend flying to az and guess what? no cars available in phoenix arizona !!!!!! unbelievable shit show to the bone!!!!! read more

I made the car reservation for my son far in advance. We were supposed to pick up the Van between 9-9:30 and were meeting up with family and all heading out to Six Flags. We got a call that morning advising the van would not be ready until sometime around noon, but they could offer a different vehicle, but it would not be ready until around 10:30. We opted for the 10:30 but was very disappointed that it was not ready when we scheduled it. This put all of us very far behind by the time we got to the rental location at 10:30 and waited for the vehicle, which turned out to be what we requested to begin with to arrive and back to pick everyone up and finally head out. Let me just start by saying that I was VERY pleased to have found a car rental company in today's day and age that provided friendly, fair, and home-town feeling business that created customer loyalty. I rarely ever had any issues, but if there ever was a mix-up Drew ALWAYS took care of it in a very fair manner. Once he gave me a free 2-day due to car troubles and another time I just returned the car without filling up. DONE! I rented cars here 1-2 times a month without any worries. I even ran into people who talked about how great the service was at this location and knew Drew and Daniel by first name. HOW AMAZING IS THAT?! The previous owners have left and the quality of the service has gone down. I rented a vehicle one time since then. Let me start by saying that the friendliness has gone out the door. I reserved a sub-compact for the mpgs as per usual. I received a MINIVAN!! I'm a female in my 20's with no children. I may as well have just driven my gas-guzzling SUV!!! When I returned my vehicle a nice young man was at the desk. The total ended being an unreasonably large amount that confused the both of us. After 30 mins of both of us trying to figure it out, I told him to charge me and we can adjust the credit later when the owner/manager came in. He advised me that she would call or email in the next 24 hours. Three weeks later still no word and my charge was $125 more than we had calculated on the return date together. ~~I JUST RENTED MY NEXT VEHICLE WITH DREW! ~~ It was in the same price range as I had with Avis (although they have some nice lux cars). I knew they were opening with a new company and was able to find their number. Gave Drew a call and just booked a car over the phone with him. I set up the rental at this location with Drew ( he runs the place - I think it's independently operated at this location) because of previous good experiences with him. As it's getting to closing time, she takes the wrong bus and ends up on 38th street in some pawn shop parking lot. She called up Drew to ask him to stay open a little late so she had time to find the right bus to get her there. Instead, he asks where she is and heads out to pick her up. When he gets there, he has had another employee follow him in a second car! Does the paperwork right in the pawn shop parking lot and sends her on her way! Customer of Drew's for life. read more

This franchise seems to have changed ownership within the past few months. The current owner also works here full-time and is very customer-oriented. If you speak with him on the phone and he tells you they have a particular car, he'll have it there when you arrive. Shelia the owner was an absolute nightmare! We booked the car 5 months in advance and went at 8 am to pick up the car. Shelia informed us that there was no car for us at all, not even a similar vehicle. She had given them all away to other renters. We explained that we really needed the car and she behaved as if she really didn't care. Giving us passive aggressive remarks and eye rolls. She finally called up to the round rock location and found a car. We offered to go collect the car as it would be quicker but she said "no I'll have it brought her as I still want my commission". Which was a very inappropriate remark considering she had ignored a booking made 5 months prior. She called us letting us know the vehicle was ready an hour later than she said she would call us and when we picked it up she was rude and complained about her lack of support from budget and Avis. She acted in an unprofessional manner and was extremely rude, I would not recommend going to this location EVER! read more

We had a very poor experience at this location. We had reserved an suv 6 weeks in advance but on the day of delivery arrived and were told it was not available. No effort was made to help us find another suv at another Avis location or otherwise. All we were told was that we would get a call when, if ever, the car was available. Avoid this place like the plague! My story: We had a Premium level car reserved. When we got there, they had no such thing and just said "well that's what they brought us from the airport". The lady was unable to tell me what the value of a reservation is - obviously of no value. She could have at least checked her inventory against our reservation and notified us before going to their office. We had tried three times earlier in the day to call them, but no one answered the phone. I think they care about your money, but nothing else. We had no choice for a car, but the one car they had ready. When we got in the car the dash light was on indicating low tire pressure. Reluctantly they checked the pressure and said it was ok but offered no explanation for the dash light. With some reluctance we took the car but driving home noticed a scraping sound coming from the wheel/brakes. Obviously, there is little checking of the cars they rent. We immediately returned the car for a full refund and will never again rent from the 35th street location. The young man who had the previous franchise was the total opposite and a pleasure to deal with. A woman named Sheila is the current franchise owner. read more

I actually ran out of gas and was walking past here on my way find a gas station to buy a gas can and some gas. when I decided to see if they had a gas can I could borrow. Not only did they lend me the can, but gave me the gas inside which was enough to get me to a nearby station. If this kind act is any reflection on their business practices, I would rent from them in a heartbeat. read more

I declined all fuel service at the time of rental. I filled up the tank right before returning to the airport. However, I later realized I got charged for fuel service. When I called Avis, they told me that because I had driven less than 75 miles, you automatically get charged since people often don't fill up the tank thinking it is near "full." I was NOT happy, considering I had made a point to decline the service and had made sure to refill the tank near the airport. I can't believe I got penalized for driving LESS miles and was assumed to be too dumb to realize I had used gas. Really irritating. read more

When I picked up a minivan, the employee (though fairly friendly) did not walk me out to the car to do a walk-around or ensure that the vehicle would be OK for me. I had to go back inside and fetch him because some of the seats were folded down. That evening, I learned (when I had a van full of people) that one of the seat belts didn't work. The employee was nice about replacing it, and arranged for the replacement immediately. He also readily agreed to a discount for the inconvenience. When we picked up the replacement, I fortunately remembered the importance of a walk-around, and I requested one. It was clear that the employee was not at all used to doing this, and didn't understand that it was essential that we sign the form. As we drove off, we realized it was dirty: sticky food residue and crumbs everywhere. When I dropped it off a few days later, and gently pointed out to the owner that the replacement was not cleaned, she got defensive and said that when they have to get a car from the airport "in a hurry" they don't have time to clean it. My car ended up in the shop needing major repairs last week so I went to Avis for a rental car as it had used them in the past with great service. When I arrived to pick up my reservation, the employee Sheila was not very friendly, but I needed the car so I dealt with the poor attitude. I used the car for 5 days with no problem. The night before returning the rental, I had an emergency wih my dog and needed to take him to the vet. My dog was laying in the back seat of the car for 10 minutes on the way to the vet, in the middle of the night. I had to be at work the next morning and had to drop. Car off right after work at 5 and be up north to pick up my car by 6. There was no time to vacuum the car. I thought it shouldn't be a big deal as they clean the cars between every person and there wasn't much hair anyway. When I returned the car, Sheila made the comment " ya know, we are pet friendly but we aren't THAT pet friendly!" Ok. I didn't realize there were different degrees of pet friendly. Regardless, the attitude and rude comment were unnecessary. She then proceeded to ask me to take the car and vacuum it out. I couldn't believe it! Isn't it their job to clean their cars after use? She told me she may have to charge me extra to clean it. My response was "ok, then charge me if you have to. I have to go get my car." If the policy is to charge extra then do it, but the rude comments and the attitude was unprofessional and unnecessary. I can't even believe how unprofessional that was and how people run their companies like that. I will never again use Avis and will be calling corporate to complain about the attitude and with the pictures showing how little hair there was. It was not something I needed during that highly stressful time. I'm sure their cars have been left quite a bit more trashed than a few dog hairs! Beware of this place as they are very rude and Sheila is clearly unhappy with her job. read more
