I rented from Avis back in January. My primary issue is with the check-in agent & misleading process. I prepaid via Priceline because rates started at $60/day booking direct. I'm able to get a daily rate half of that on Priceline so I book for 3 days, still paying $150 all said and done for a kia rio or similar. When checking in, agent says "I can give you a Nissan Versa, that's what I'd take if I were you" Sure sounds fine. We breeze through pages and pages of electronic contract. I sign, believing I am checking in for the economy car I reserved. There was absolutely NO discussion of an upcharge/upgrade. Is the Nissan Versa an upgrade?/ Guess what? Apparently it IS and Avis can charge you over $20/day more for it. But the problem is I didn't find that out until I returned the vehicle. When returning the vehicle I was given a receipt for another $80 or so, on top of the $152 I already paid- I do the math: 152+80=232/3= OVER $77/day for a compact car?! I feel extremely ripped off. I ask questions. Return agents say they can't help me I have to call their manager. I'm so befuddled by this I call right away while waiting to fly home at the airport. The only redeeming part of this experience is the manager picks up his phone immediately, and agrees to remove the charge. But he warns I "should really read the contract more carefully next time" I still don't remember ever seeing the additional fee listed anywhere. In the future I will need to be extremely careful to read every single page, even when there is a line of 4 people behind me. read more

Been an Avis Preferred member for decades, but will never rent from Avis again. A month after renting a car in Albuquerque for two weeks (first trip for me post-pandemic), I received an email informing me that Avis is charging me $450 for "smoke smell." I don't smoke, have never smoked, nor did I have a passenger who smoked. There were, however wildfires all over New Mexico at the time of my rental, with heavy winds, blowing smoke into restaurants, hotels, parked cars. I spoke with a customer service rep who asked me why I was driving into wildfires (!?), I asked to speak to a supervisor, who would phone me back. Called again a week later, same conversation, but no supervisor would speak with me. Received an email a few weeks later (from a supervisor) informing me that the $450 charges were warranted (without speaking with me). By the way, there were no attendants on hand during either my pick-up or drop-off, "just leave the keys on the seat" the sign said. And I have yet to receive an e-receipt that will open. BE AWARE people, this is not a company you want to rent a car from. read more

After a change in management a few months back, this Avis location is doing quite well recently. There are sufficient cars to cover travelers, the owner actively solicits and responds to feedback, and the staff continues to be helpful and kind. Further, Avis now has a points reward system, allowing me to earn points towards free rental days. Bravo! Thank you, Avis. read more

One agent with no sense of urgency. Waited 45 minutes. Dont waste your time. Quicker to walk to town

Will never rent here again!!!! For one thing paying $120 a day for a Prius is ridiculous and secondly being 1 1/2 hour late and being charged an extra day at $120 is just absurd!!! They just kept saying that that's the rules!!!!!!!! If they would have just charged me an extra $60 for the hour I was late I would have paid it!!! For them to loose a business customer that travels a multiple times a year for a measly $60 is a poorly managed business!!!! It's never the business, but the people that are trained to run them that will either make or break them!!!! I would give them no stars if possible but not letting me!!! read more

I booked the rental car on Expedia and didn't even notice the time of rentals. While checking out my car at 1:40 they said it was due back at 10:30 which is what it was booked as. I also needed to add a few hours since I was attending a funeral and it wouldn't end at the appropriate time. They couldn't help me onsite and I had to call the "extensions" toll free number to change my times. The man that helped was rude and unhelpful. For an additional 3 hours of car rental they charged me $80 (more than my daily rate through Expedia). Amazing, I understand an additional fee but that's a rip off. I will never rent a vehicle with Avis again. read more

I was charged $192 for gas on a half-full tank. Prepaid for rental online and they came up with $450 additional charges on returning car. Emailed them and they acknowledged tank was more full than they originally thought, so they knocked the fuel charge to $152, which is still ridiculous. These guys are scam artists. None of their fuel policies were disclosed to me at the time of prepaid rental. I was "Avis Preferred" as well, which offered me absolutely zero protection. I also found out I was charged an extra day for bringing the car 2 hours late. Their response "After 30 minutes, a charge of three-quarters of the daily rate plus $0.01 is applied. At 90 minutes, a full day is charged." This means if you rent a car for 5 days and 91 minutes, you get charged for six days. Read the fine print with these guys. read more

So bad. The most important part of taking a reservation is "holding" the reservation. No cars on the lot when I landed at 11pm. A line of 7 people behind me also waiting for no cars on the lot. We had to wait quite some time to get a car... I'm sure the people behind me were there forever. AND 3 weeks after the rental I received a charge for "tolls and bridges". I hardly used the car when I rented it and I certainly did not go over any bridges or through and tunnels. I had to dispute the charge with my credit card, and luckily I won. read more

My husband reserved & pre-paid for our vehicle. He travels almost every week so has tons of points & is Elite Platinum for Marriott & same with American AAdvantage which he used for this vehicle rental. My step dad dropped off hubby & took me to Avis. I arrived 15 mins early & there was a long line (6 people in front of me!) & only 2 agents at the desk. 1 woman ran up & said she was going to be late to a mtg. I finally get to desk, have confirmation email which they find us in system But say my husband has to be there Even though I'm his spouse!! :( I frantically call him & he's already gone thru security & s boarding in 20 mins. Fortunately my dad is waiting "just in case" & drives over to pick him up. Hubby comes but agents are both working with another customer. Finally get to counter & he has to sign everyrhing read more

They truly STINK at ABQ. Avoid at all costs. It took them forever to wait on me and terrible attitude.

Terrible! Long wait to get paperwork then to get car. Will never use Avis/budget again

After tonight, I've decided not to ever rent Avis. Their customer service wasn't great when they challenged me that I got a wrong car. I knew I had the right one and the result, I was right along. I'll stick with National as usual! read more

Worst rental car experience of my life. Multiple people we spoke to in person and on the phone seemed to have NO ability to answer simple questions with any coherent or logical answers. We had multiple people in person or on the phone tell us different answers to the same questions. They made it immensely difficult to return the car at a different location and told us it would be free several times and then were later told it was a $50 fee. We had to go in person to try to resolve our issues. They were unable to explain two mysterious fees that were also added to the bill. They didn't know how to send us an email. They answered yes or no questions with long and circuitous nonsensical monologues. This is the second yelp review I have ever left in my life, and the first negative review it was THAT bad. I wish I could give 0 stars. Please avoid. read more

Had a reservation for an SUV. They rented it to someone else. They are still looking for a replacement. Did I mention having a reservation? So far, I've spent about as much time at the Avis rental counter as I did on the flight here. Way to represent this city, Avis. Next time, I plan to fly elsewhere. read more

This was the worst rental car experience of my life by a predatory company at the ABQ Airport. My flight was delayed and I told Vicki at the front desk, who was very nice but moving slowly, that I was in a hurry and wished to decline extra costs. She stated that there were only two cars available in the full sized area that I selected (and paid a healthy amount for) on Priceline- a Forester and a Jeep. I said I'd take the Forester and the word upgrade or upcharge was never mentioned once. I recruit for a university on a small salary and I'm forced to pay for rental cars out of pocket and I don't get reimbursed and my wife is out of work with a newborn. Avis straight took advantage of me and upcharged me an additional 85 on top of an already expensive rental. Because I was in a hurry to get to a college fair in the next 25 minutes, I signed where they said to sign initialing to decline coverage, etc. and the upcharge was never mentioned, just a rushed initialiing. Thinking it was standard and I had let them know that I did not wish to pay any extra and was in a hurry, I signed. I got back to the extra charge that I'll never get back with my wife out of work and the Avis manager did not care, nor did Alex in email customer service. They got me this once, but I'll make sure to avoid AVIS like the plague on all of my future travels. Read the fine print, drink your coffee, and triple check everything because you can trust no one at AVIS. read more

The Avis at the Albuquerque airport is absolutely the WORST. If i could give a negative rating I would. No stars for you Albuquerque Avis!! I rented a car in early February, 2020, and returned the car as scheduled the next day having driven less than 30 miles. I spoke with the person who checked the car in and did walk around the car before giving me my receipt. Imagine my surprise when on 3/11/20 my Amex was charged for $175.00 for "tire damage" relating to my February rental. I have never been contacted by Avis in any way - not by email, a phone call (god forbid a human would reach out), or a letter) - regarding an issue relating to my February rental. Had I not reviewed my Amex bill for something else, I would have never known I had been billed by Avis for an additional $175. Note that the total cost of my rental for the one day was about $60.00. I called Avis customer service - a likely place (I thought) to go for this type of thing, but was told that they could not help me and that I needed to contact the rental desk at the Albuquerque airport. I was given a number to call, which no one EVER answers. I called at least 6 times and nothing. I think that this is outrageous. If you have ever had Avis to something like this to you, please contact me at kpacelaw@gmail.com as I believe this intentional on Avis's part. The $175 they charged me - with no proof whatsoever - is not enough to make a huge stink about, so they probably just think most people will not object to this sort of practice. I will NEVER rent through Avis again. I have had a good experience overall with Avis, but this is the second time I have had a billing issue with the Avis in Albuquerque and it has completely soured me on using them. And the drama continues in dealing with customer service. The damage to the tire was said to be to the "sidewall", which required the car to be towed for $50 that I was charged for. The "repair bill" did not identify the company who repaired the car or the address of the repair company. And there was a $25 "administrative fee". Truly unbelievable. Sounds like a class action to me! read more

Worst car rental experience I have ever had. I usually rent through Enterprise but they had no cars available so I reserved through Avis. When we got to the car rental center, every company had long lines as it seemed that most people on our plane were renting cars. The other companies all had 2 clerks, Avis had one. Within a few minutes, the other companies had waited on all their customers. It literally took the lady working for Avis at least 10-15 minutes per person. We were in line for almost an hour when she told us we could go outside to the Preferred Customer Kiosk. When we got out there, there were no clerks there. Finally, two men came in to wait on the customers. It took us an hour to get our car. No one apologized for the long wait. They honestly could have cared less. NEVER AGAIN!!! Terrible customer service! read more

Atrocious. While I was waiting two other customers came back because their cars weren't there. And then I had someone else in my car.

Wait is so long. They make simple car renting process longer than the process of buying a new car. Don't come planning to be somewhere at a particular time. You will be disappointed. There is only one guy at the counter always efficient and quick. I am sick of this place otherwise. My company is considering changing the rental car co. read more

Stay away. They don't tell you the truth. Buyer beware. They tell you what you want to hear. Then they upcharge you for the car you want. I wanted a 4 wheel drive car or front wheel drive car. I flew into Albuquerque on business and I didn't even check the reviews before I booked my car rental because I have always had a positive experience with Avis. My flight was delayed due to weather and by the time the shuttle dropped me off at the car rental station, it was a few minutes after 1 am (their closing time). There was still someone at the counter, so I approached to see if I could still get my rental. He was very nice, despite the fact that it was time for him to go home. He quickly got my car rental set up and sent me on my way. I had trouble figuring out how to work the car since it was quite different than my own and luckily he was still there and willing to come out and help me. The car was great and drop off was easy. Like someone else noted, I was charged the $14.99 for driving fewer than 75 miles. I wasn't verbally informed of that and I didn't notice it in the agreement (though I barely looked at it). read more

Let me start by saying I travel for work and leisure on a regular basis. I'm on the road more than I'm at my own home. I had a reservation with Avis. When we arrived they pulled up my reservation. Because I travel so often I have vouchers issued from Avis with no black out dates attached to them. Since I've used these vouchers multiple times I know that the voucher CAN NOT be applied to the tax and fees so I asked to apply it to gas to make sure I use all of my voucher money. The lady was new and didn't know how to apply it. She asked her manager Ray Jacobs to help. He immediately said you can't use it because the car rental was less then the voucher. I explained I understood that but if you apply the prepaid gas it would be more then the voucher. He walked away for a minute came back and said no that's not how it works. After explaining to him that I've done it that way multiple times before he insisted that the other Avis locations that accepted my vouchers before didn't know what they were doing. I have a very hard time believing that since I've used it the way I've stated before in THREE different states!! Your telling me all three of those people had no idea what they were doing? Not a chance Ray Jacobs!! It was late and he was being super lazy and rude and didn't want to deal with anything or anyone! I will NEVER use Avis in New Mexico again and will be contacting corporate! read more

I rented from Avis just last week, April 2016. I complaint is with the check-in agent, her supervisor and the misleading statements they made about the car that I reserved via Priceline. I am fully aware, having traveled for business for 35 years, that agents are compensated for 'upselling' such as additional insurance, car upgrades, extra items, etc. The agent usually says something like, "would you like me to upgrade your vehicle for a small additional charge". But, this agent, Maggie, went way beyond this technique. She says now that she merely recommended, but what she really did was warn us that the economy vehicle we had already paid for through Priceline would never make it up into Taos. She told us there had been a 6 inch snowfall that very week and the high altitude and mountains would be impossible to do in the car we had reserved. Essentially, she scared the bejezus out of us and we reluctantly agreed to an upgrade that was even more than we paid to Priceline. She tried the same technique with the extra insurance but I flatly refused. When we returned the car, I complained to her supervisor, Laura, about the misleading tactics Maggie had used. Laura told me this was the first time she had heard this about her agent and as much as told me I was lying to her. Then she said I would need to speak with Maggie as it was her decision whether to credit me any money back. Maggie did call me the next day and flatly denied that she had in any way coerced us. She then said Laura would have to agree to any discount at which time I told her that Laura had said the same thing about her on the previous day. At that point, Maggie said, "well ,I am not going to discount this at all', and she hung up on me. I then turned to the Avis website and spoke to a customer service agent named Catherine. Within 5 minutes of speaking to her, she agreed that the tactics used were unethical and agreed to return half of our upgrade fee. I felt this was very fair as the Jeep we used was in good condition and we had reluctantly agreed to it. If I lived in Albuquerque I would invest a day standing outside the Avis desk and speak about my experience to every person who was renting a car from Avis. I believe in morality and ethical business practices and these people do not practice either one. read more

THIEVES!!! AVOID BRANCH AT ALL COSTS! The most deceptive company I have dealt with. I paid Priceline in full at the time of booking and, unfortunately, the car came from AVIS. When I got to the AVIS counter In Albuquerque, NM (ABQ), the "SWEET" agent suggested I buy a full tank of gas for $25 so I dont have to worry about filling up. I accepted that. Then she offered me an upgrade because she she said happened to have one on hand and wanted me to have a nicer car. I thanked her for her hospitality for the FREE upgrade and she said she was HAPPY TO DO IT FOR ME. SHE then TOLD ME TO SIGN THE KEYPAD acknowledging that I am paying $25 plus taxes for the full tank of gas, which I did. BUT, OOPS...SHE FORGOT TO MENTION THAT SHE WAS CHARGING ME FOR THE UPGRADE! IT MUST HAVE BEEN AN OVERSIGHT, RIGHT, BECAUSE there was NO MENTION AND UPFRONT PRICING LETTING ME KNOW THAT I WAS PAYING AN EXTRA $20/DAY FOR HER KIND OFFER OF AN UPGRADE. After signing that keypad she printed out the paperwork and folded it up neatly and put it in her nice Avis folder, gave me the keys and off I went. But again, never did she tell me that I was getting charged for the upgrade. SO, I get a credit card statement showing I paid Avis $144! What? I think it must be a mistake, SO I call Avis. Guess what AVIS said to me? "TOO BAD...YOU SIGNED THE CONTRACT". I asked her why that upgrade was never disclosed to me as being a charged upgrade, and again, she told me "too bad, you signed the contract". So I open a dispute with my citi Advantage card and I have been informed that I signed a contract which are not easy to fight so to date I have been deceived and overpaid for a NON-DISCLOSED UPGRADE! I don't know about you guys but when I have been offered a few upgrades in my past, I have NEVER been charged for that upgrade when there is no discussion of an upgrade charge. Anyway, Citicard told me that Avis said there is a contract and there is not much they can do about it. But they told me to send in my contract so they can see what they can do, but, contracts are hard to fight. SO, LIKE I SAID AT THE BEGINNING: STAY AWAY AVIS, they are THIEVES! ***They do business with Priceline so they can SCAM MORE MONEY out of us at the counter and it looks like they have done that to many other people below as well! *** When I was on the phone with Citicards, I saw this yelp page and the agent told me to print out the yelp comments showing that this is AVIS' customary practice and perhaps they can help me. I will keep you all posted to see if my credit card company pulls through for me.... read more

Late last year I reserved a long term rental car for six weeks. I prepaid the entire amount for the rental and the pick-up for the car went as expected. On the day I was set to return the car I was returning from out of state and told them I would be a few hours late. I was told to simply return the car in the morning and pay the $38 for the extra day, which I did. However, when I returned the car I was told that they had expected it back 2 weeks earlier. When I showed the employee the reservation she informed me that Avis rents cars in 4 week increments, and that for longer rentals one of their employees is required to renew the rental for the remaining time over 4 weeks. She told me that they had probably forgotten and that she would work with her manager to get it cleared up. I began receiving calls from Avis collections in January of this year, and after explaining the situation and providing the original reservation I heard nothing from them until I tried to pick up a rental car for a business meeting and was told that I have a "do not rent" associated with my name. I missed my meeting. Repeating the process with collections, I was finally told that, after 6 months of dealing with this, I would need need to go back to the local branch to have it cleared and until that time I still owe them the money. I have spent the last month on the phone nearly every day with Avis at ABQ International Airport. I have never been able to speak with a manager when I call, and rarely have they ever called me back even though I am assured they will do so. Such unbelievably bad customer service in the face of their own, self-admitted, mistake is unacceptable. This is the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life and I will never again rent from Avis. read more
