This company will charge you way more than they say . plus they keep your deposit and never return it back . I was suppose to be given a discount for using my AARP card. That didn't happen. If you need a rental car, you don't want to use this service. They rented us a car that wasn't serviced and needed wheel alignment. We notified customer service that we will be driving the car out of state. On our way, we noticed some weird sounds. Called them and they asked us to return the car to the nearest location. Only for us to be told the car needed oil changed and was not in good condition at the time of rental. You know what, they will risk your life over money. They don't care to check their cars before renting them out. read more

Had a great experience dropping off my car on July 11th despite the hurdles the pick up location in El Cajon created. They were super nice, they reviewed my documentation and listened carefully to my story. They fixed everything. Additionally, I had unloaded the car at my house and forgot my Covid Mask. They were so kind and had a whole box behind the counter. They gave me one, so I could ride the shuttle back to the airport. They were busy and it took a minute. But it seems to me that they did a great job. Another great adventure with Avis. In fact, my current car is from Avis resale and it's in perfect condition. I've had it two years. read more

The gal at the desk who I had to go to because the board wasn't working, was literally calling people monsters. She was so flustered and rude. My experience with this Avis location was a nightmare. I rented a car that was fully pre-paid online. When I got to the counter, I clearly verbally declined all of the add-ons, including gas and insurance. I get car rental insurance through my credit card, as do many people, so I always decline coverage. I asked the counter-person if everything was already paid for and she assured me that everything was paid and nothing would be owed. So I signed the contract. They have you sign a tablet at the desk rather than paperwork and the text is so tiny that you can't read it, which I think is part of the scam. I realized later that the counter person added rental insurance anyway hoping I would not notice. On top of this, it took over half an hour for our car to be brought around to the pick-up area. We walked out to meet a crowd of angry people waiting for their rentals, and Avis employees insulating and yelling at each other over the walkie-talkies. The whole thing was chaos and super unprofessional. Upon returning our car, I was shocked to see that I had an additional $300 owed for insurance when I clearly remember declining coverage. This was MORE expensive than the car rental by a lot and I remember clearly stating I did not want this. I was told to speak to a manager who was conveniently too busy to speak with me when I went to the counter. I got a call back several hours later where they basically told me that since my name was on the misleading contract, well that's just too bad for me. I asked if there was a corporate number I could call and he told me no, I shouldn't even try. I realize this is my fault for not reading the fine print, but you want to think that if you verbally declining add-ons, it won't be added anyway. I would also hope that if you have an issue that you truly believe should be heard, that a company would at least pretend to care. All I can say is that if you cannot avoid renting from Avis, READ every single word of the contract before you accept the keys because they will try to slip stuff on there that you didn't ask for. "Yeah, sure, I just want the basic." Cindy was talking about the basic insurance package, presumably. Looking at the contract I signed, it's actually called the "Loss Damage Waiver," but Cindy didn't tell me that. I thought she was just talking about the car that I had already rented AND freaking paid for days ago. Basic, compact, whatever. I was groggy and caught an awful virus on the plane. I just wanted to get my car and drive to Santa Fe. "Sure, sure. I'll sign on the line." "Oh great, I'll give you a free upgrade." "Wow, Cindy, that's so nice." I hope Cindy feels good making her bonuses on the backs of people that can't afford it. Cindy's sweet-talking cost me an extra $500. I'm an adjunct professor. That's the amount of money I had to beg my university to give me to cover my plane ticket to Albuquerque, so I could present at the conference at Santa Fe in the first place. I'll never rent with Avis again. And, yes, I know, I signed But, she purposefully obfuscated her language and took advantage of a weary traveler. Which is a pretty garbage thing to do. read more

The agent at the counter were very nice. Their computer system was down and so it took an hour and a half to pick up my car (I was #7 in line). My flight times (both arriving and departing) changed from AM to PM but the days and the total number of hours I had the car did not change. Even though I called ahead and let them know, AND they said it would be no problem or extra charge, they charged me for an extra 3/4 day. I even pointed out the charge when I picked up the car but was assured by the same nice agent I had prepaid and no extra charge would happen and it was probably due to the computer outage... Avis corporate has been completely unhelpful even though I've spent hours submitting documents and explaining the situation. So now I am disputing the charge with my credit card company. I will never use Avis/Budget again for business or personal and will warn my friends and colleagues as well. read more

This branch is dishonest and has terrible customer service. I reserved an AWD SUV (Ford Edge or similar) for a ski trip, months in advance, and once I arrived for a pickup they gave me two options: A Hyundai Santa Fe (FWD) for or the Ford Edge (AWD) I reserved, with an upcharge of $200 (so that I would have to pay $550 instead of the $350 shown in my reservation). The reason for the upcharge given by "Jose Trevino" was that they were in high demand. His "offer" was completely unfair and ridiculous because I had a reservation. I ended up taking the lesser Santa Fe because it was 5 minutes before closing and I had to leave to Taos so I couldn't risk looking somewhere else and not finding a car at all. My husband is a loyal Avis customer, I usually patron enterprise, but he convinced me to get the car I needed for my trip from AVIS. After I ordered and fully paid online for my trip I checked out Yelp and was very nervous!! My experience was NOTHING like any of the reviews from the past year. My flight was later in the evening, I arrived for my reservation at 10pm on a Sunday. At that time only one attendant was working for five different companies, people in line were being rude and impatiently making loud comments about having to wait. Despite facing this environment the attendant was so polite and cheerful in each of the interactions. After about 15 minutes workers for all of the other companies came out from a back room and the customers dispersed to their respective companies. I received such quick and courteous service! Online the cheapest option was a midsized SUV, I received a 2020 GMC Terrain. It was so clean and smelt like new car. Returning my car was equally quick, I pulled up was immediately helped and got right on the shuttle in less than 5 minutes. Would HIGHLY recommend this location and will use them again on my next trip!! read more

I made my arrangements well in advance and paid a reasonable fee online. I arrived at midnight and had a long flight. There was a long line of people and New Mexico is not known for their sense of urgency. Once it was my turn "Jose" was trying to upsell me on a vehicle that I didn't even order. I kept telling him I just wanted what I arranged for online. He gave me this long sales pitch and I was getting annoyed because It was late and I just waited so long and wanted out. He offered me a Nissan Rogue that I took with the impression that I was getting the same price. By the time I left almost an hour after my flight, I was irritated because I had spent an extra $240 that was completely unnecessary. I thought I would see if I could settle things at the conclusion of my trip and enjoy my vacation. Upon returning the vehicle I casually told that I can take it up with Jose. Wow, I was appalled to hear such an answer rather than a suggestion for a solution. This was not very helpful at all. I had a wonderful trip outside of this negative experience. I booked a car in advance, because National (my usual) had unusually high prices. I landed and went to the counter. There was one person working the counter - one customer being helped and one more ahead of me. I waited in line 20 minutes and gave up. Seriously. Because the first customer STILL hadn't gotten their keys. I was listening, too, there was nothing unusual going on, the agent was just that slow. I walked away and walked up to the National counter to see if they had a car available. They got through two customers, got to me, got me a price cheaper than my Avis reservation was, got me keys and out the door. After a last minute change of plans, our travel group from the airport went from being 2 people to 5 and we needed to make a last minute change to our rental reservation for a larger car. Tu was working the Avis preferred counter and was able to quickly assist us with getting a new car. Avis corporate should be ashamed of this airport branch. I made a reservation for a standard SUV through Costco. That part went flawlessly. The challenging part came after the airport tram dropped us at Avis. Our reservation had said that our standard SUV would be a Ford Edge or equivalent. After I showed my ID, the agent told me that an edge was not available but that she was putting me in A Subaru Forrester. I don't know about you, but I don't consider that car to be an SUV, and if it is it is a compact version at best. I guess she sensed my disappointment, because she inquired if I wanted to upgrade to a seven passenger Chevrolet. She said that the upgrade fee would be $30. Imagine my surprise, when she presented the paperwork to me that showed my forte estimate has gone from $121 all the way to -$280. She explained that the $30 was a Per day charge plus tax. I told her we go back to square one and ask that you look for another standard SUV besides the Subaru. she offered a Jeep patriot, and I reluctantly accepted that car which is indeed a standard SUV. Advantage of her several attempts to correct the paperwork, and required if defense of her supervisor. I imagine she was a training based upon her interactions that supervisor. When the paperwork was finally completed and I went out to the lot, I was surprised again when I saw signs indicating that I could "upgrade" to a Ford Edge, the exact vehicle I had originally asked before, and was told was unavailable. And, it was the original car that the reservation had said I would receive. The parking lot attendant was kind enough to answer my question: couldn't I have the Ford edge? She directed me to the Avis Premiere attendant in a booth in the parking lot. That agent was kind enough and smart enough to give me the car that I had originally been promised. So I ended up getting The car I had originally been promised but if I had not been assertive, I would have been trying to fit me and my four other family members and our luggage in a Subaru Forrester. The bait and switch tactics are the unmistakable signs of a corrupt business culture that somehow permeated this Avis branch. The only reason I gave them two stars is because of the appropriate behavior of the parking lot attendant and the agent at the parking lot booth. Very, very disappointing read more

They did not an available standard car that got all my luggage so the guy that helped me gave me a free upgrade. I absolutely loved the car and it was a lot of fun driving it. I will say this. I got the car stuck in sand while visiting a national park. I called for roadside assistance and it was the worse service I have ever received. I explained my situation and the girl wasn't even paying attention! She ended up hanging up on me. I called over 20 times and they kept hanging up. Leaving me for dead! I was so upset. Luckily a police/ranger happened to drive by and helped me dig the wheels from the sand with a couple shovels. I think Avis should switch providers. They were terrible. I have a 5 star because of the car rental and how well I was treated by the staff. I didn't think it was fair to fault them for the shitty third party road side assistance service. read more

Terrible customer service. I rented a car that smelled like a smoke bomb. Returned the same day to exchange it and it turned into a fiasco. The two women working the counter refused to take responsibility for the mistake. They both blamed me, the customer. I never got an apology for the condition of the car. I'm in the lobby RIGHT NOW waiting for a manager to get here to fix this transaction. Unbelievable. It's 2018. I'm sitting in a parking lot full of cars. I have money in my pocket. But I need to wait for a manager to come wave their magic wand and resolve this. There is no such thing as customer service. I can't believe the disgusting attitude of these employees. Avis Rental at ABQ Sunport: I paid with Priceline but was charged an extra $314.00 on top of my agreement by Avis -- for supplemental insurance that I declined. I brought proof of my own insurance with me when I picked up the vehicle, as I always decline this option. 1-800 number was no help, and informed me that it was "my fault". I realized after we got to the airport so we went back to get them Not even 30 minutes after we returned the car. They "weren't in there." They were stolen by one of the employees. The only reason I'm leaving two stars and not one is because of the kind employees that assisted me when I was having car issues. I came in for an exchange because my tire had a slow leak and the oil change light was on and the lovely agents John and Heaven were kind enough to assist me. That was until the manager Oak came in to where they were helping and yelled at the poor girl in front of not only me, but other customers that were waiting to be helped. He yelled at her to go back outside when I was struggling to find assistance to begin with and then he spent time helping someone else first before finishing help me. Heaven and John were absolutely lovely but Oak will make me never return to this location. Extremely rude and had no respect whatsoever. Somehow, Avis has managed to be the only company here with a line - the other companies must have figured out some mystical secret. Very frustrating! It's been many years since Avis used the tag line "We try harder" and it shows. However they seem to be going out of their way to be rude at this location. I'm a Preferred member renting wth Avis since 2000. Waited 20 mins for the customer service rep to get me a car all the while listening to her complaining about the computer system, paper jams, the lot attendants, etc. Finally got ,y rental agreement, went out to the space....no car matching that description anywhere in the row. It's not rock science, reserve a car, pick car up, drop car off....not sure how Avis manages to make it so difficult and turn it into a 40 min project. Moving to Enterprise I guess. read more

I had a similar experience to others who have posted reviews about getting scammed by this Avis location. I rented a car through Priceline with a pick up time of 12 noon. I arrived 45 minutes early and started the check-out process. I thought that there might be a grace period if picking up a car within an hour of the reservation time or a modest hourly charge. The agent did not mention any additional charge, but, luckily, I asked if there would be an added charge. Without telling me the added charge, he simply said that the new total would be over $1,200 as compared to my prepayment of just over $600 for the entire reservation. So, it would cost me $600 to pick up the car 45 minutes early. The agent, James, said that by picking up the car early I was negating the entire Priceline deal and had to start over and pay at a much higher rate. Fortunately, I was able to stop that from happening by sitting down and waiting the 45 minutes until exactly noon. However, I was not prepared for the next scam. When asked if I wanted insurance coverage, I emphatically said no, as I always decline car rental insurance. But, unbeknownst to me, James signed me up for insurance or Loss Damage Waiver anyway. I made the mistake of trusting the agent to follow my wishes and not sign me up for insurance. I did not read all the fine print and signed the rental agreement not realizing that insurance coverage was imbedded in the language. Imagine my surprise when I received my credit card bill with an additional $696 charge from Avis for this bogus insurance. I contested the charge through my credit card company and they were very good at following through and getting a copy of the rental agreement, which Avis did not send to me after I asked. However, it appears that there is little I can do if I "agreed" to the contract. Two lessons learned: (1) Take the time to read the rental agreement to make sure you are not being charged extra and (2) Do not rent from this Avis location. read more

I never leave comments, but I feel like I have to make sure I save the next person renting a vehicle from this place. I went there with a reservation for the amount of $286 for the week. When I got there the reservation will not let me check-in because I said I was over my time of pick up. Then had the Avis representative tell me he can get me a better deal when I arrived. He said instead of $286 for the week I can get you $28 dollars a day, me thinking it would be a total of $168 for the week. NOPE to my surprise what he did was add another $28 a day on top of the $286 for the week! My total was $511 for the week. When I notice this I went to talk to Avis and all they said was I agreed to it and that's it. There is nothing they could do. All he could say it I signed for it, which I didn't do. I ask to show me my signature and he couldn't. Me being with my family did not want to have a back and forth with them. Double check, triple check the paperwork before you leave or just stay away! read more

The car I received wasn't clean. It had a dirty back window which was difficult to see through. The tire pressure console light was on as I left, and there were large stains on the back bench seats. Kind of felt like I was borrowing a car from a friend versus spending hundreds of dollars to rent a car for the week. read more

Been an Avis Preferred member for decades, but will never rent from Avis again. A month after renting a car in Albuquerque for two weeks (first trip for me post-pandemic), I received an email informing me that Avis is charging me $450 for "smoke smell." I don't smoke, have never smoked, nor did I have a passenger who smoked. There were, however wildfires all over New Mexico at the time of my rental, with heavy winds, blowing smoke into restaurants, hotels, parked cars. I spoke with a customer service rep who asked me why I was driving into wildfires (!?), I asked to speak to a supervisor, who would phone me back. Called again a week later, same conversation, but no supervisor would speak with me. Received an email a few weeks later (from a supervisor) informing me that the $450 charges were warranted (without speaking with me). By the way, there were no attendants on hand during either my pick-up or drop-off, "just leave the keys on the seat" the sign said. And I have yet to receive an e-receipt that will open. BE AWARE people, this is not a company you want to rent a car from. read more

I rented from Avis back in January. My primary issue is with the check-in agent & misleading process. I prepaid via Priceline because rates started at $60/day booking direct. I'm able to get a daily rate half of that on Priceline so I book for 3 days, still paying $150 all said and done for a kia rio or similar. When checking in, agent says "I can give you a Nissan Versa, that's what I'd take if I were you" Sure sounds fine. We breeze through pages and pages of electronic contract. I sign, believing I am checking in for the economy car I reserved. There was absolutely NO discussion of an upcharge/upgrade. Is the Nissan Versa an upgrade?/ Guess what? Apparently it IS and Avis can charge you over $20/day more for it. But the problem is I didn't find that out until I returned the vehicle. When returning the vehicle I was given a receipt for another $80 or so, on top of the $152 I already paid- I do the math: 152+80=232/3= OVER $77/day for a compact car?! I feel extremely ripped off. I ask questions. Return agents say they can't help me I have to call their manager. I'm so befuddled by this I call right away while waiting to fly home at the airport. The only redeeming part of this experience is the manager picks up his phone immediately, and agrees to remove the charge. But he warns I "should really read the contract more carefully next time" I still don't remember ever seeing the additional fee listed anywhere. In the future I will need to be extremely careful to read every single page, even when there is a line of 4 people behind me. read more

After a change in management a few months back, this Avis location is doing quite well recently. There are sufficient cars to cover travelers, the owner actively solicits and responds to feedback, and the staff continues to be helpful and kind.
