Picked up a car today after landing in Albuquerque at Dollar. Since I'm dropping it off at a different location, I can only speak to the pick up process. The line for the counter was insane and they only had one person working. He was friendly and helpful and did keep the line moving. The quote I got through Expedia with extra protection was lower than what they ended up quoting me at pick up. I'd already had a long day and still another two hours of driving to my destination so I removed the coverage. Car was as excepted and no issues at pick up. It's a fair - average rental place. They're located in the same rental center for all companies renting cars at this airport so you'll need to take a shuttle bus over from the terminal. Overall, it was the best price around so I'm fine with the waits and pricing confusion. read more

This place SUCKS. Total bait and switch. We booked the wild card and they offered an ELECTRIC car. When we told them that would not work for our needs they told us we would need up upgrade to a regular car. What the actually fuck!!! No alternative other than a $400 upgrade, after we already prepaid 200. This was supppsed to be a 285 rental, ended up DOUBLE. I am furious. How can you offer an electric car without OTHER options. It took 2 weeks, a detailed description of the rental agreement and set of keys, many frustrating phone calls and computer clicks, and a broken lost and found site, before we asked our nephew to go to the Dollar counter and onto the Hertz counter at the Rochester, NY airport to pick up the keys that we knew were there. Upon arriving at Albuquerque International Sunport Airport with a reserved vehicle at Dollar Car Rental, we arrived at the Rental Counter to find no one there... waited about 10 minutes... counter person was snarky in his comments... car was dirty - unwashed, windows smudged, dash full of fingerprints, floorboards not vacuumed, trash in cabin! The vehicle had Florida tags... it appeared to be calibrated for sea level, it could not handle the altitudes of New Mexico. What an absolute and utter mess this place is.... I came and pulled in and asked for a printed receipt. The man told me that they don't do that they email. I said that I prefer printed as I have to voucher for work. He stated to go inside the welcome center to get it, I thanked him and asked if I needed anything. I got in there and they asked me for the contract number to which I didn't have on me due to I called and changed my rental amount and they had said they would email me an updated one (and didn't which is why I wanted a printed receipt). Inside they asked for mileage and I said I asked if I needed anything - they refused to help and said I had to go out and get it tho there were several at the counter and he was complaining that he had to "find me by my name and it's harder to get info for Dollar rentals on a Hertz computer". They can take payment easily on the same system tho.... So after walking out to go get mileage the guy literally said "oh I did know that - you should get an email tho" - almost all rental places they have the print outs when you check in as it's all electronic - but because they are so cheap they don't even have a way to give receipts without being a huge screw up. We came to ABQ for the Balloon Fiesta (Awesome) We returned our vehicle and were greeted by my new friend, Marcos. Friendly, engaging, and a joy to talk to. As we were unloading our bags, he asked if we wanted a lift to the terminal (Awesome) We engaged in friendly chat and my man Marcos gave us some of his reasons for relocating to ABQ. BBB complaint didn't go anywhere, complaint through CheapTickets didn't go anywhere either. the Albuquerque manager refuses to budge but I'm sure they would not like being paying customer and get the kind of customer service they have provided. They offered $100 voucher for a future rental. I will never rent from them again so what is the point of that. I am not done seeing this through as all of us in this country have become to complacent in thinking that poor customer service and excessively high costs of everything is normal. I booked a full size car and paid triple the price that I normally pay and when I got there, they told me we cannot give you the car because we rented it out to someone else for more expensive rate I travel to Albuquerque every two weeks for business. Arrived with a AAA reseveration expecting to rent the "Manager Special" which indicated a compact or similar size car. The desk agent said the car would be an all electric car. I told the agent we would be staying 60 miles south of Albuquerque and there would not be a charging station available. I then requested a compact car as the reseveration indicted. The agent stated emphatically that the car would be electric and if I wanted to "upgrade" to a gas powered car there would be a $400 upcharge for a compact size car. I asked if they would provide a charging cable and they said no cable would be provided. We ended up renting from another agency and got a full size car for only a little more than our price would have been at DOLLAR. DO NOT rent from this location if you are returning your VEH after hours because they charge you for fuel even if the tank is full! I filled the tank prior to returning and have the receipt to prove it. I am express member and have rented through Dollar for years, so I am familiar with the 'leave your contract and keys in the car and we will check it in once we open' process. Imagine my surprise when my receipt included a $15 fuel fee. Total BS! And then good luck trying to get a human to answer at the ABQ rental counter. I spent 40 minutes trying to chase down someone to finally get the fee removed. Total PIA for something that should have never happened. As I was looking for telephone numbers I saw other yelp/google reviews for this locaton where the same thing has happened to other renters. NOT COOL Dollar--NOT COOl! So the person that checks in the VEH needs to either put on some damn glasses or learn how to read a fuel gage. I want to believe that there isn't some master plan to make up for lost profits and rip off your customers by sticking them with minimal BS fuel charges but it is pretty suspect based on all the negative reviews. The woman working the counter when I picked up our car repeatedly tried to charge me for things I didn't want. First it was extra insurance, then it was paying an $85 surcharge to return the car without a full tank (that one she didn't even explain or ask if I wanted, she just included it on the bill). Finally, she tried to charge us for an extra driver for the entire week-long rental (we had asked to have an extra driver for only two days). She had to print out a total of four receipts because she kept including charges I had asked her to remove. I returned the car at night, which meant that the offices were closed and I had to drop it off at the lot without talking to anyone. The next day I was emailed a receipt showing final charges totaling much more than I was quoted because - shockingly - the woman who checked us out never reduced the extra driver charges. The final receipt she gave us didn't show any extra driver charges because she'd messed something up yet again and said she would make sure we were only charged for two days. I called the Dollar customer service line and the woman I spoke to was nice enough but told me that because I signed a contract, they can't reduce the charges even though it's their mistake. After some digging, I got the counter number at the Albuquerque airport and tried every single option on their phone menu. No one answered. Not at the desk, not the manager on duty, not the general manager, not accounts payable. The only extension that seemed to work was the one to book new reservations (not surprising...they want your money, they just don't want to have to deal with you when they make mistakes). Avoid this company, at least at the Albuquerque airport location. The prices might look lower online but with the extra charges they try to sneak in and the total lack of customer service, you're not saving much. read more

I rented a car for the day. When asked if I wanted to purchase the fuel option I said no, I would return the car full. They charged me anyway. When I complained about the charge they said there wasn't anything I could do about it unless I had the receipt. They saw it was full, no receipt should have been needed. I will never do business with Hertz who owns Dollar or any other car rental they own. This was an easy fix, and they chose not to do the right thing. June 2023 I rented a Kia Soul in Albuquerque New Mexico. The day we arrived it was chaos in lobby as they explained the building had lost power and none of the cars were available. The counter stated that they could not get the cars turned over because of this and there was a two hour delay. When I finally got the car, it had not been cleaned and in fact still had pink marker writings and circles around damages on the car. Everything was supposedly noted and I took the car and left. When I dropped the car off, the attendant asked if I was given the car the way it was with the pink markings and I told them yes. The attendant checked their tablet and said that everything was the same as when I got it and the previous damages were marked in the system. Fast forward 3 months and I get an email telling me that I am responsible for over $500 damages for a rock chip in the windshield. I called to clear it up and left a detailed message but received no call back. Then about a month later, I get another email telling me that I owe money for the rock chip. Called again, spoke to a lady, and told them how it was already there and had been noted. Thought it was cleared up until I got a letter in the mail now telling me that they are going to send me to collections if I don't pay for the damage that I did not cause to begin with. Dropped off car at the Albuquerque, NM Airport location at 6:30am 3/25/20. No agent available at return nor at counter deck. Sign said to leave keys in car and would be emailed receipt. Took photos of gas tank and onboard computer fuel/milage reading and a video of car to prove no damage. Received bill today and they noted fuel tank only 5/8 full and charged my credit card an additional $62.19. I am LIVID at this attempt at fraud! We reserved a toyota rav4 After going thru the procedure, which was cumbersome and unfriendly, i went to to get it at the assigned parking spot. It was not there, nor was it anywhere on the lot. I had to compromise with a Ford Escape, which seemed to be hastily delivered. It seems that it was not checked thoroughly before i got it. About 5 days later after driving less than a 100 miles i noticed the front right tire deflated. I brought it to a garage which informed me that this was a slow leak, which, because its location on the tire, could not be fixed. I needed to get a new tire. I had no choice. The garage manager told us that he saw many cases when auto rental companies put old tires on the cars. Also, based on his experience he suggested to leave the damaged tire in the car, and show it to the rental agency when it is returned, so that i will be compensated for the cost of the tire - $174 in my case. We drove for over 1000 miles with the tire in the back seat. When i returned the car at Tucson airport, the clerk was shown the receipt and the damaged tire. After consultation with his manager, he informed me that they won't refund me the cost of the tire , since the puncture could have occurred while the car wad in my possession. I feel that the negligence in checking the car before i got it could have prevented the problem, and Dollar Rentals should be held responsible for that. Definitely do not rent a car here! When we arrived, the desk was closed and a small sign said they had run out of cars and apologized for the inconvenience. Couldn't believe it! We had to scramble as most of the car rentals were sold out. Luckily, Avis was awesome and so helpful. They got us into a car that had just come in and saved the day. We rented a vehicle which went well enough. The problem came after returning the car. We left an item in the car. Dollar found it and shipped it to us at our cost thru Fedex. Fedex damaged it. Dollar HAS to file a claim for it because they were the shipper. Dollar refuses to file the claim on our behalf and will not refund our money either. I realize Dollar didn't damage it, but it's their responsibility to either file the claim or give us a waiver so we can be reimbursed. They refuse. read more

Do not rent from this company! When I received the bill i was charged $65 for satellite radio next to the word APPROVED. i never was asked nor would I ever approve an expense for satellite radio. What's more I was charged an additional $12 a day for an upgrade which I did not approve. When I talked to an agent, she said she would delete the satellite radio charge, then emailed me and said she would not. I am hopping mad. DOLLAR'S BAIT & SWITCH I had planned a photographic study of the Texas panhandle on a tight budget and needed a sturdy hatchback for the job. Dollar Rent a Car promised a "Dodge Caliber or similar" on their web site at a base price of $109.88. The price was right, so I reserved the car through Expedia. On the first day of travel, I arrived at Dollar's Albuquerque airport desk and gave the agent my confirmation number. She said the base models were all rented (however many THAT might have been) but the "upgraded" model was available for $179.88. She said a Chevy Cobalt sedan was also available for $109.88. I sweated my options: pay more for the Caliber, take the sedan, or go to another rental outfit. I had looked over the cars and prices at other companies, but didn't have that information with me. I needed a hatchback, so I decided to take the Caliber for $435 total and try to get an adjustment later. "It's loaded," she said. Hm, I thought--more like, I'm soaked. I had rented a Jeep Cherokee from Dollar a month earlier out of Oakland International- all-wheel drive, cruise-control--and it had only cost me $367 a week. En route to the airport, after I finished the job, I stopped and phoned Dollar customer service. Morgan answered. I gave her my rental agreement number, reservation confirmation number, and asked her why I had been overcharged. She told me that the Albuquerque location is actually an independent Dollar affiliate named Fleet Rentals of Santa Fe. I said it didn't matter; Dollar negotiates the terms of association with its affiliates and is responsible when they don't deliver what Dollar promises. She agreed with that assessment, promising to investigate further and get back to me. The phone rang ten minutes later. Before I could retrieve it, it kicked over to voicemail. I called voicemail. It was Morgan. She left this message: "Hi Mr. P____, this is Morgan with Dollar. Um, ah, what we can do is, we can, we'll we'll get this taken care of. Uh, just, if you can, give us a call back tonight or sometime before you get to . . . the location, or even after. Either way is okay. And if not, call us back tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. And, once again, my name is Morgan. And sir, I hope you have a safe trip. Thank you. Bye bye." I called back the number on my display. A recording announced I had reached "PRC, a leading provider of outsourced customer care solutions" and gave me some options. I punched one and got someone who said he didn't know Morgan, and, in any case, I would have to call her back at the 800 number. So I called the customer service number again (800-800-5252--you may need it). Lorenzo answered. He said he didn't know Morgan but he'd be happy to hear my story if first I'd give him my rental agreement number. We were starting over. I told Lorenzo my story and he made appropriately sympathetic mouth noises, finally telling me he would investigate further if I could hold. I held. That was the last I heard from Lorenzo. I soon realized I had been jawing with these people over an hour, and I was running disastrously late. A mad dash to Albuquerque ensued. Along the way I lost the connection. Lorenzo didn't call back. By the time I reached the Dollar desk to pay up, I could best be described as panicky. I reeked of stress sweat and my mouth tasted like the floor of a barn. Wild-eyed, I threw a credit card at them while I gave them grief over the entire mess. They gave the card back but, I would later discover, without my copy of the rental agreement or a receipt. I ran for the terminal shuttle and eventually boarded my plane exactly ninety seconds before they sealed the door. When I got back, I phoned Dollar customer service again. Darrell answered. He said he couldn't do anything about the Albuquerque outfit, because it did it's own billing. He transferred me to the manager of Fleet Sales of Santa Fe doing business as Dollar Rent a Car. The man told me in an even, patronizing way that I had rented the "all-wheel drive, cruise-control upgrade" of the Caliber, which came with a higher price, and no adjustment would be forthcoming. I didn't think to ask how many base models were actually available; my guess is: not many. So here's the bottom line: Dollar franchises are individually owned and customer service has no real pull. They're there to sweet talk you, essentially. I bit on the old bait and switch. Morgan never "took care of this." Lorenzo and Darrell didn't either. And the manager of Fleet Sales of Santa Fe doing business as Dollar Rent a Car in Albuquerque told me to take a hike. (On the other hand, Dollar, it's been five years since this review went up, and God knows how many rentals you lost because of it. Might have been cheaper to play nice.) . read more

Two and a half stars. Lots of bad reviews here. You need to be aware when dealing with car rental companies. These bozos are par for the lot. I shop around online for the best price, then when I get there I make sure the price they give me matches the one I got on the internet, then I tell them right away that I decline all of their coverages and I will fill up the tank myself. Usually have no problem. Often I will make two reservations at different companies if I anticipate any issues. Also, you are probably covered already for insurance because many insurance policies for your personal vehicle will cover rentals, also most credit cards have built-in coverage. But don't take my word for it, check for yourself. Just rented from the Dollar at ABQ. No big issues other than the tank was not totally full when I got it, which is kinda shady, since I have to return it full. Did get a nice Ford Escape which I drove all over the state like a maniac. Smooth ride, did nicely on washboard dirt roads, was fast on the wide-open, country two lane. And for a decent price ($157 for a week, plus excessive airport fees). No complaints there (especially since my work was paying for it ). The return guys were nice. I left the back of it full of trash, like I usually do. But I left them about $4 in change in the center console for their trouble. ;-D read more

We arranged a car rental online, and set a price for a midsize vehicle. When I got to the rental counter the agent made aggressive attempts to convince me to purchase extra coverage and other services. I had to repeatedly declined all such offers before he finally got the point that I wasn't buying. Then, this agent told me he was giving me a midsize car - a Yaris! I said that was not a midsize car. He said it was. The four of us could not fit with our luggage etc. Fortunately, others traveling with us, were able to assist. Basically, this location of Dollar would not honor the deal we got online and gave us a sub-compact instead of the midsize vehicle we had arranged. This is not a trustworthy business! I rented an economy car for 25 days in December and had a great experience. The car I rented was a Chevy Volt and a few days into the rental the passenger seatbelt stopped functioning and the windshield wiper fluid ran out - difficult when so much mucky water is sprayed on into the air on those snow-thaw days. Victoria who rented the car to me at ABQ airport was so friendly, accommodating, and clear in her support that I knew I could return the car for a full functioning one at any time and I did. I was upgraded to a better economy vehicle (Mazda 3 sedan) that made for a safer and fun experience. I will rent again from this location. Great experience even when things went wrong. read more

I used Dollar on my last trip to NC, and I was satisfied with the car, price, and 10% discount for paying with AmEx. So, I booked a compact here for $27 per weekend day ($41 after taxes and fees plus $20 for age 21-24 drivers = $65 total). The car was fine, actually. A cheap Kia Spectra with 5,400 miles on it. Clean, good horsepower (surprisingly), and good on gas. However, the rental process was awful. Last time with Dollar (and every other time with any of my 20+ car rentals), the rental place just looked at my license, swiped my credit card, asked me about insurance, and had me initial ten thousand places on a sheet of paper. Here, they required 2 phone numbers. When I said I only had a cell phone, they refused to rent the car to me. I ended up giving a fake number for a fake relative to get the car. They also asked me my occupation, employer, hotel, reason for staying in Albuquerque, and some other personal questions. Good for them for trying to hang onto their cars with thorough rental procedures -- maybe it is a NM phenomenon that they lose a lot of cars, but this whole experience was over the top for me as it never happens anywhere else. You never know who is getting your information or how it could be mined. If that stuff is not necessary for a 17-hour rental, then please don't ask. There's got to be some way to look at national Dollar records and see that I have been a spectacular renter with the company in the past... Also, I indicated that I would return the car at 5:00am the next morning, and that did not seem to be a problem. When I arrived, there was no one in the parking lot, attendant booths, or even inside the rental facility. I had to leave the key, gas receipt, and return voucher on the counter because I had no clue what to do. There was no drop box that I could find, and they gave no instructions whatsoever. So I ended up just praying that no one came along, swiped the keys, and took off or whatnot. The shuttle service picks up all car renters from the airport at one spot, drops them all off at one building with all the rental counters, and drops people off at the same one spot at the airport. It runs "24 hours a day," but it took me a good 15 minutes between the airport and car rental place either way regardless of the fact that I was the last person to get on the buses that had already been waiting for some time (no idle wait time). I would say "I'll never do this again," but I'll never be at ABQ again to worry about it. read more

I rented an economy car on their website in June 2018 for I think $25-26/day. On the site, you have options to Pay Now (the price you were quoted) or Pay Later (a higher price). I opted to Pay Now a total of $269.39. I get to Albq, the service is really good and the car is fine. After returning the car on time, no dents and a full tank, my card was charged an additional $119. No one there advised me they'd be doing this. Unfortunately I didn't realize this until later in the year, and the Dollar rep advised me there was no action I could take. When I asked how to avoid this happening again, she said the only thing was that I could click Pay Later on the website (the higher-priced option). After reading that they've been accused of tacking on repair fees for vehicles returned in perfect shape, I consider myself lucky (I suppose) that it wasn't worse. I've done a fair amount of business w/Dollar in the past but this may be the end of the line for me. read more

Three months after my fateful experience with lightening and Dollar Rent A Car - I got a bill from them for the damages caused by the lightening to the car. They also tried to double-charge me for the tow. Thank goodness I have awesome auto insurance (USAA) and had charged the rental to my Discover card (also awesome) so despite hours of painful paperwork and multiple phone calls all was covered and I was not out-of-pocket for the repairs. In all fairness to Dollar (not that they deserve it) their claims people were very nice and professional. Now I think I really truly am done with Dollar forever more. read more

I declined the insurance twice and they still added it. Go read the old reviews yourself, no matter what the location is, this is what they do. This is standard practice. If they deceived you too, File a complaint with the FTC. Give them a call at 1-877-382-4357. There need to be enough complaints so Dollar can get investigated for their fraudulent behavior. I filed a complaint. Also, file with your home state Attorney General as well. They have been deceiving people for years, and nothing is being done because not enough people are complaining directly to the agencies that can help us. This company has stolen so much money and time from all of us, and they need to be stopped. It does not matter if they have resolved your issues, FTC needs to see that this is not just occasional "mistakes" but a standard practice with this company. If the FTC can see the trend from our reporting, it will alarm them to investigate. It does not matter how long ago it happened. And lastly, please share it with everyone.
