I spent a considerable amount of time researching California pig hunting outfitters before deciding…read moreto book with Schmidt Guide Service, and I'm glad I did. For the price, nearly everything is included except food, making it an excellent value. Our group of four booked approximately six months in advance. I highly recommend reviewing their website beforehand, as it answers most common questions and provides a clear understanding of what to expect. About a week before our hunt, Sarah reached out to confirm our arrival and finalize details. Hunters can check into the lodge by noon the day before their scheduled hunt. Due to scheduling constraints within our group, the guides arranged for us to head out the same day we arrived at 2 PM. Upon arrival, Sarah was there waiting for us, handled check-in efficiently, completed paperwork, and provided our lodge key. The hunting lodge itself is a nostalgic home built in 1936 on roughly half an acre. You can feel the history the moment you walk in, reinforced by decades of photos displayed throughout the house. The lodge includes everything needed for a comfortable stay: a full kitchen stocked with cookware, plates, silverware, and essentials; a dining room; living room; four bedrooms; and 1 1/2 bathrooms. The bedrooms comfortably accommodate up to eight hunters. Outside, there's a fire pit, horseshoe pit, and seating area to unwind after a day in the field. Off to the side of the property sits an old-school saloon, butcher area, and walk-in meat locker, all adding to the unique experience. Now for the best part: our guides, Luke and his son Josh. From the start, both were friendly, professional, and welcoming. The ranch we hunted was about 25 minutes from the lodge. I was paired with Luke in his UTV, and his experience was immediately obvious. Having guided with Schmidt for 32 years, his skill and knowledge are impressive. His ability to spot hogs without binoculars or spotting equipment was unbelievable. We encountered our first group of hogs around 4 PM, and two members of our party successfully harvested by 4:20 PM. Luke quickly field dressed the hogs, and we were back hunting in no time. Later that day, Luke located another group, allowing our third hunter to harvest before the end of day one. The following morning, Luke and Josh were ready to go by 5 AM sharp. Not long into the hunt, Luke spotted a sizable boar, and our fourth hunter successfully harvested him just after 8 AM. After returning to the lodge, Luke and Josh immediately got to work skinning and preparing the hogs for processing. Their efficiency and expertise were impressive. By 11 AM, everything was packed on ice and our group was ready to head home. Our experience with Schmidt Guide Service was outstanding from start to finish. Luke and Josh are tremendous assets to the operation and truly made the trip memorable for our group. If you're considering a guided pig hunt in California, I would absolutely book with them again.

It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They answered every question I had and shared their years of knowledge in a way that made me feel comfortable and confident. The scenery was beautiful, and the whole hunt has had such a big impact on my life. Now I get to share wild game with my family for the first time! I highly recommend this experience to anyone, especially first-time hunters. I'd do it again in a heartbeat! P.S. The meat was delicious!

I shot my first wild boar (and a trophy for that matter) because of Tony and Ross' tenacity and passion for hunting. It's very clear they love to hunt, and they will absolutely work/hustle to make sure you get chances to shoot. I took down a 220lbs boar from 60yds. We saw boars on every outing. Just some background - I've fished my entire life, love the outdoors, but have never hunted. This couldn't have been a better introduction. If you are at all hesitant, don't be, because you would be missing out on a truly memorable experience. We stayed at the Priest Valley outpost. The accommodations are great and far from roughing it. Nice kitchen and large dining room table to enjoy a couple beers and some meat off the grill after your hunt with friends. There is also a pool table, sizeable flat screen TV, and sofa sectional. Bunk beds are very comfortable. Tony and Ross do a great job of getting you comfortable with the rifles, again safety first. After the detailed tutorial on the rifles, some target practice, and a briefing on how the hunt would go down, we were off on the truck. Not to get all soft on you - but the ranch(es) you prod for game are really pretty. You are spending a lot of time cruising around in the sun and fresh air, couldn't be better. Will spot all sorts of wild life - we saw elk, deer, wild turkey, and quail, to name a few. The cherry on top was the trophy boar I bagged on day 2. Again my hat's off to Tony and Ross - I look forward to many more trips.

Both Tony and Ross gave or group opportunities to shoot pigs. They worked hard and moved us from ranches that were not showing signs of pigs to give our group an opportunity to get a shot at a couple groups of pigs.

Knowing it was my son's first attempt the guides made sure he got first crack at the wild pigs. The staff to the guides , the butcher everyone was friendly supportive and helpful. Everyone went out of their way to help you succeed . Very confidence building. Yes the days were long but well worth it. This place is top notch . Everyone in our group got a pig . The effort and the professionalism and experience really shows. You have multiple opportunities to hunt as much or as little as you desire. The staff are experts and it shows. I would highly recommend this place and for us staying on the premises made a huge difference not having to commute to and from the facility. Give this place a try they are worth it. Plan on returning for sure .

What an amazing place! Now that I am moving, I wish I had found Bitterwater Outfitters earlier as I…read moreusually do my hunting in West Virginia and Texas. They are a 5 star operation from hunt, guide, to gutting and cleaning of animals and to skull cleaning! I only wish they did their own Taxidermy work. Tara who arranged my trip has always been kind, courteous and obliging. She scheduled me in February and I went solo looking to finish my Texas Ram Slam and Texas Big Horn Slam which I did. I took a Merino Ram ( Rambouillet) and took a Corsican. The prices for each were in line with what I have paid in Texas and West Virginia. The Merino Ram had nice horns, over full curl and a quarter which is how I like them since I do euromounts. The Corsican was also a full curl and a quarter and you can see the skull, he looked fabulous! There is a search for the rams but that comes with hunting . I took a 200yrd shot on the Merino and 50-60yrd shot on the Corsican. By the way, the property is huge!!! Apparently over 400k acres. My 40 acres that I own is nothing compared to this place. My guide was Dugan and he was a pro and I liked him a lot. I actually requested him again on a trip back this St. Patrick's Day! He knew what he was doing and where to look. He also took great pics and videos. He gutted the animals quick and professionally and once we were back at base camp he cleaned them up for meat processing fast and nicely. Bitterwater does a great job with the guides and he is a 5 star guide for sure. Meat processing was also done exceptionally well! I only took the Merino since it is the better of the two rams and yes, it was yum. The meat was packed professionally and labeled very well. The butcher is from New Zealand or Australia and is wonderful person to deal with and the sausage they made was fabulous by the way! Serious meat processing alone was worth 5 stars! Kudos to places that do their own meat processing. I had a great and memorable time! The only drawback was they use a Taxidermist called Life Like Taxidermy which is a piece of shit operation. Avoid them at all cost and wished that Bitterwater didn't use them. See my review on them...They are out of Madera, CA and should be avoided at all cost. Use Mounts Unlimited in Los Gatos, CA instead. I loved my experience at Bitterwater Outfitter so much I am taking my cousin's husband this St. Patrick's Day and already Tara has done a great job of white gloving my experience! If you are looking for a great place to go hunt hog, rams, exotics and whatever else they have on their menu, you will NOT be disappointed! I highly recommend Bitterwater Outfitters for a hunting experience that will be memorable and fabulous! Thank you Tara and staff!
