I come here randomly usually past 9pm. Every time I have visited here I got fast service. Never had to wait for a seat for longer than 5 mins. The food arrives quick even when it's busy. Avenue is a CAFE--- you go there for coffee or drinks. If you need to order something off the menu to go with your coffee, I recommend highly the nutella crepe with fresh fruit. Its excellent. "Going for coffee" in Greek culture is a multiple hour, hang out/chill out event, and this is a place where the proprietors and waiters understand that. Staff doesn't hassle you like other New York joints. If you want to enjoy this sort of Greek hangout culture in New York city, you go to Avenue, and get your Greek Frappe or Freddo, which are very popular iced coffee drinks in Greece, or some beers and hang out with your friends. This place is a modern Greek style cafe like what you'd find over there, so its mostly popular for young people and Greeks. You can get Greek iced coffees, drinks --- its really a great/trendy place to just hang out, and not overcrowded/chaotic in Manhattan, but in quiet, nearby Astoria, and at a refreshing slower pace (service too). The bad reviews are from people who went in with totally wrong expectations. As for the service, who seriously cares if they "check-in" on your meal? There's an abundance of horrible over service in NYC, you can go there if you like being interrupted every five minutes by waiters. If you need a waiters attention wave them over like a normal person would. Avenue is my favorite cafe in Astoria, needless to say. read more

The food can be better for the price you pay. Their alcohol is NOT worth it for the price they are charging. We received terrible service on a busy sunday morning.. but the manager did not just make up for it, he also gave us an incentive to come back and apologized. Sometimes this place is a hit or miss. Came here on a Saturday for drinks and dessert. Surprisingly our waitress was friendly and attentive and at the end they changed waitresses on us since it slowed down. Our 2nd waitress was not so friendly. The drinks are okay. We also ordered the veggie pizza which was good and the chocolate cake which was ok as well. The music was way toooooo loud. looking for something tasty, inexpensive, and with outdoor seating, alyvia m. and i decided to give this place a try. the menu is pretty diverse, entrees, sandwiches and paninis, pizza, savory crepes, salads, etc...many dishes sounded really good, but in the end we went splitters on the two pork paninis that were both really delicious...though, i think hers was better than mine, with grilled haloumi cheese and smoked pork loin (mine was good, too, with avocado and roasted pork)...each came with the perfect amount of french fries and a small greek salad that was really fresh and well seasoned. my only complaint is that they are cash only, and i didnt see this info anywhere on the menu (not that i was really looking) nor did the waitress tell us when we were seated...now, i could understand if this were a small restaurant, but its a pretty big place, and it was kinda shocking they didnt take credit cards, and its really annoying to have to leave my date sitting at the dinner table while i run to the nearest atm (which was at some random bank that im sure no one has an account at, where they charged $2-f'ing-75, grrr!). it would be nice if they let you know before hand i will def come back here, as the location is great, the outdoor seating abundant and the food very tasty...there is the potential for more stars after i sample some other offerings ;) read more

The place is really nice inside however we came in the middle of the winter and it was freezing inside the restaurant. I order the chicken kebab sandwich with the side salad. It was good but the chicken in the sandwich were huge chunks and it made it hard to eat and at sometimes it felt like it wasn't cooked through. This is a trendy neighborhood bar/restaurant that won't disappoint! Good for a casual night with friends. Their dessert crepes and cocktails are delicious and the restaurant itself has a lounge-y feeling that's perfect for an after-work drink or brunch! The rest of the menu, though is very simple. Not a lot other than sandwiches/ salads; typical Greek-American fare. A lot of places in Astoria rely on their established popularity but any time I've been here I have received consistent service. Although I find this place to be over priced and have a pretty boring menu, I must rave about the grilled chicken cobb salad. I actually CRAVE this salad weekly. It is the perfect mix of grilled chicken, avocado, bleu cheese, egg and bacon. The greek olives , although not a normal cobb salad ingredient, compliment the salad nicely. The lemon dressing is delicious and goes great with this salad. It's $13 which I guess is right on the brink of being an overpriced salad, but I say for the size you get (I usually get for dinner and have leftovers for lunch the next day) and how delicious it is, its worth it! read more

so. this past sunday the weather was gorgeous. my boyfriend and i originally had plans to go to brooklyn for lunch, but figured since it was so, so nice out we would go to astoria and try to sit somewhere outside, in the sun and enjoy it. we passed by avenue and there was a table outside so we quickly grabbed it, as it was the only one open and everywhere else looked pretty packed. so needless to say, i was very excited as ive heard great things. let me start by saying our service was MEDIOCRE AT BEST. our waiter was so slow, so quiet we could barely hear him, and he barely came back to check on us. i get that it was busy and he had a lot of tables, but anytime i needed anything i had to flag him down or ask someone else to get him. ok so this is what we ordered- he got a frappe, i got a bloody mary (mimosa), chicken skewers, burger, parma panini sandwich. my bloody mary came out pretty quickly but my boyfriends frappe didnt. we asked where it was and he said oh yeah, its coming. he finally came back with it about 5 minutes later which was when i told him that i absolutely could not drink my bloody mary. i LOVE spicy bloody marys just as much as the next person. but this was disgusting. could not drink it at all. so i told my waiter, he looked at me like i had 10 heads and then i asked for a mimosa, which i got about 10 minutes later. when we ordered the chicken skewers he told us they would take a while and maybe not come out before our main entrees, which we were ok with, but a little confused as to why it takes so long to grill chicken. anyway... the food finally came. let me say i was not impressed. the chicken didnt even seem fully cooked and didnt really have much flavor. my burger, which i asked for it to be medium, had these really gross pieces of congealed fat on top of it. when i pointed it out to the waiter he told me that had happened because the burger was medium. thats not true, i mean as far as i know. i always order burgers medium and that never happens. pretty sure the burger was frozen when they cooked it and thats why that happened. but what do i know? the waiter KIND of asked if i wanted something different but he didnt really seem concerned that i was unhappy with my food so i passed. my boyfriends panini was OK. finally we decided that we were done and didnt want o sit there anymore waiting for our waiter to decide that we were worthy of his time, so we asked another waiter to ask him to get us our check, our waiter finally came by and asked how we were and we told him we were waiting for the check. he acted like the other guy never told him, which is possible but really ? all in all i was really unimpressed with avenue cafe and will most likely NOT be returning or telling any of my friends to go either. their only saving grace is that my burger was taken off the bill. read more

horrible service. i mean horrible!!!!. the cleaning guys over there who clean up the tables after you are much better than those dumb waitresses. we dropped a fork off from the table and in no seconds this guy comes out of nowhere to give us a new pair of fork and knife. impressive.... the waitress didnt know the wines in the menu and i had to show her the menu to have her understand what i wanted. took forever to serve food. never came even once to ask how was the food. then we ordered coffee and cake and she took damn 15 minutes to come back and tell us they didnt have the cake which we ordered. never refilled the glass of water during 1 hour of stay. and worst of all they only take cash payments......wont go there again.. oh btw, mozerralla and tomatoe salad was stale... read more
