It's been several months since my last haircut, and I really needed it to be trimmed, layered, and thinned for the new season. I was promptly checked in for my 3:30 PM appointment. My hair stylist Sophia was very attentive to my request and careful in washing, cutting, and styling. The instructor checked constantly and made a few small changes to my layers. I recommended thinning since my hair quickly grows thick, and Sophia immediately fixed the cut. For the quality, price, and attention to detail, the haircut was amazing. The only downside is the long appointment time (I finished near 5:30), but it was understandable since the students needed to check their plan and each step with the instructor. I would 100% come back and recommend customers here. read more

Warning: I would be very cautious booking color services at the Aveda Institute. I arrived early for my 1 PM appointment and was initially told I wasn't even on the schedule, which immediately set a stressful tone. Once I was eventually taken in. It took over 40 minutes after the consultation for the student to begin working on my hair because they were still writing notes and preparing their sheet. The service itself felt inconsistent and poorly managed. I understand this is a training environment, but there seemed to be a lack of structure and time management throughout. My color turned out chunky and stripy, and it was very obvious that at least two different people worked on my hair because my original stylist needed assistance mid way through the coloring. One side came out significantly more orange than the other, and it honestly looked like I had months of grown-out color. After my hair was washed, I was told they "didn't have time" to finish with a blowout. Instead, I was given a card for a complimentary blow dry for another visit, which I was fine with and they said we'd do a rough dry. Since it was 6, which was closing time the instructor stepped in to "rough dry" my hair. There was no product and they did a few passes. I left with my hair about 90% wet. I was shocked that they allowed me to leave the appointment in that condition. Not until I went home and fully dried my hair was when I noticed that my hair cut was uneven. My original 1 PM appointment didn't end until around 6:15 PM. I later emailed them about the experience and, after escalating it with multiple people, they brought me back 2 days later for a correction appointment, which took about 3 hours. I'm still not fully happy with the result, but it will have to do for now while my hair recovers from being processed twice within 48 hours. Overall, I would strongly advise having very low expectations. I would not recommend getting your hair colored here. A simple trim might be okay, but even that feels like a gamble depending on who you get. read more

I was recommended through Tiktok! You go online and fill out a form out what service you would like and list a couple availabilities. I got a text and email appointment confirmation within 24 hours of requesting. (the actual appointment was about a week later as I requested) *note* these are students but they have a professor/senior stylist periodically checking in. The service I requested was a haircut. This is my blowout... my future stylist was super nice, although this is technically a blowout and wash, it's okay. Didn't expect too much from a student but when I got home and seen my reflection on the windows on my way home it is very frizzy and overall not such a good job. Really think it was the technique she was using. It was very small sections and took longer than expected to dry my hair from the back which my front piece dry up so soon. This is just feedback. I was in Seattle for work and found an Aveda Institute about a 20 min walk from my hotel. I booked for a treatment by phone about 2 weeks out. The school has shorter hours than some of the other Aveda Institutes I have visited so might be harder as a walk-in. I had the Dual Exfoliating Peel, 90 min, treatment with Alicia. It was a wonderful, relaxing experience. You first start with a foot scrub then she lead me to the back area dedicated to facial and massage services. It's a school so yes, not as relaxing as a spa, but the quality of the products and services make up for it. Best part was when I walked in I saw a sign that advertised for 50% off a service if you buy a full size product. My peel went from $75 to about $60 and I walked away with a shampoo! Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend Aveda Institute! read more

Horrible!!!! Never go here. I took my 12 year old daughter here for a hair trim (she wanted a wolf cut) for her 13th birthday. We are Native and hair is very important for us. I was not allowed to sit with her for her appointment. For some reason, the stylist took her own direction, claimed she didn't know how to do a wolf cut, but only mentioned it to my child and no one else. Then promptly cut SIX INCHES of her hair off!! There was very little care about the impact on her. This is so disgusting and culturally harmful I don't even know how to say. Absolutely do not go here. I've never written a review before, but this experience was so bad I felt I had to. Yes, I know it's a student salon. I expected some learning curve. But what happened was beyond unprofessional. THE PROFESSOR, NOT A STUDENT, came over to check in and without saying a word, he cut a huge chunk of about 10 INCHES from the middle back of my hair. No consultation, no checking in with me, and no acknowledgment of the reference photos I had shown the student. When I tried to stop him and ask what he was doing, he told me I "should just wait until the end" and refused to let me see the back of my head. The student got so embarrassed she ran away, and he just kept going. She came back 20 minutes later and all she could say was "sorry," after making no attempt to stop him or remind him what I had asked for. Once the lead instructor finally came over and told him to stop immediately, she ended up staying long past closing time trying to fix my hair for two hours. They gave me the haircut for free, obviously, but it didn't even matter at that point because I now have to wear my hair up for at least a month before I can chop it all off to one length. My hair was very long and thick, and I literally left with four pounds less of it. I had asked for two inches off. It would be one thing if the student was just inexperienced. For the professor to be that careless and dismissive is another level. The lead instructor was a very kind woman, but unfortunately her job seemed to be salvaging the damage done by both students and colleagues. Do not go here. I would have rather paid them to let me leave without touching my hair. read more

I want to echo the comments about the instructors who are just not involved Some of these students seem to lack the emotional maturity to even be in school, let alone entrusted with people's hair. It's inexpensive but not free. And the color, actually, is not that cheap. But you will hear, over and over, "I"m here to support my students." Bottom line: speak up frequently during the cut or the color or the consultation. Make your wishes known. Don't think that you'll automatically get a good service; you won't. Below is an example of spilled dye sludge, which no body noticed, except the students, who said not a word. The instructor didn't check at the end. I didn't see it until I got home. read more

They know some students have no business in the industry but as long as they pay tuition they don't care. Do not waste your time. Still a fan after 20+years!!! Went yesterday for a haircut. It was long overdue and my hair was looking shaggy. I had a great student name Rain who did a fantastic job. Great shampoo with Shampure nurturing shampoo & a good condition with Nutri Plenish conditioner. If I needed to buy any product I would have bought both but my toiletry closet is full. Rain took a good amount of time listening to what I wanted done. Long layers reworked, total length brought up 2", light bang trim with facial framing. The instructor Johnny consulted with her on technique and she went to work. I feel disappointed in the lack of supervisor presence throughout my experience. On the website, it was advertised that the service would be closely supervised and I assumed that's why it cost money but when the teacher only showed up for the consultation and for after the haircut, I felt a little misled. The teacher and student were so nice and I understand I was shaking a good bit as well, but my haircut was not what I asked for at all (ex. Shortened all over instead of just where I asked for). One sideburn was almost an inch above the other and I never wanted them shortened at all. I will acknowledge as well that the student didn't seem to speak English as a first language which would of course make the consultation more challenging, but this again wouldn't be as much of a problem if the teacher checked in literally even once throughout the experience. I feel so ugly and now I have to shave my head again just to look decent when I was looking forward to growing it out. I was hoping this place would be game-changing so this is so defeating . read more

I got all over color and highlights. I want to start off by saying the colorist/student who did my hair had an amazing personality and was very friendly and full of energy. The student and the teacher were absolutely wonderful people and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with them. The reason for my three stars is once I got home, I realized how much breakage I had in my hair. Honestly, when I was in the chair, I was a bit nervous because it seemed like the color was on for a very long time, and in my mind I was thinking 'I hope this doesn't damage my hair' - but I understand these are students and they are learning and I agreed and signed off that I knew that and that there are possibilities with hair damage when coloring, etc. I knew that going in, so I can't be too upset. Have been using the institute for the last year since I moved to WA. Have been an Aveda customer for 30+ years. It just made sense on my retired budget to give it a try. Have not been disappointed. We were able to use the same color formula that I have had for years. I really enjoy working for the students. The instructors are involved every step of the way. You will want to be precise with what you want and expect. It does take longer than going to a private salon, but you can't beat the price. You can ask for your favorite student when you book your appointment. They are usually at the school for at least a year. Just to be fair I was close to 4* due to the location. So sad that Cap Hill has gotten so dang sketchy. Give it a try! read more

Took me a day to calm down after the horrific experience. Arrived 12:45 for a 1pm appt. Waited until 1:45 to speak up and ask whats the issue? No one knew anything going on. I was told my stylist woukd be "right with me". Apparently the one student I was assigned was not there? The lead instructor who was the most arrogant unprofessional jerk i have ever encountered, motioned to some girl who i had been watching for 45 minutes on her phone sitting on another students lap to come be my stylist. I watched 4 girls on their phones the entire time i wad waiting. poor girl comes over and was clearly not wanting to do a haircut. It was awful and zero communication. Then to have a crappy hair wash. I was only there for a hair cut. So its been over an hour and she had not even started cutting my hair. Mentioned all this to the owner. He said very clearly it was "his classroom not Aveda". Then said he was there for the students we were the models and tough! So unprofessional i left right then. Students are not trained, unprofessional and are not being taught how to work with clients. Do not come here!!!!! read more

I've tried twice to have my hair done at the Aveda Institute in Seattle and both experiences were disappointing. The first time, they didn't have the right supplies for my appointment. The stylist and instructor suggested I contact the director about a discount since I'd paid for parking and my time was wasted. The director responded back 13 days later to offer me a discount. Another 13 days later, he updated me to let me know the supplies had arrived. I was scheduled for an 8:30 am appointment the following Monday by Lillian. I was running a few minutes late and tried to call, but no one answered. When I arrived, the front desk said everyone was in class until 9:30am. This was very disappointing since I rearranged my schedule; I agreed to return then. At 9:05, they called to apologize again--my stylist wasn't working that day after all. I emailed the director that day (10/13) and have not heard back. My experience shows their poor communications and the gap between the stylists' schedules and the schedulers. The first experience wasn't too bad but the second is unacceptable and made worse by the director not responding at all. read more

Honestly this is the best haircut I received in a long time. (The last several haircuts I had at regular salons were $100 (!!!) and ended up being nothing special.) Alright so you're paying $25. C'mon, it's hit or miss right? But do your homework. It's not the student's fault if they're learning. When you make an appointment ask if you can schedule with a student there been there for half a year already. The student working on my hair said they range from as little as one month of experience to like almost a year of experience. And what's helpful is I made sure I had pictures... lots of pictures of the Bob cut with side swept bangs that I wanted and clarified the length. They have a teacher coming to spot check occasionally so don't be afraid to speak up if something looks slightly uneven. Also the haircut will take longer than normal. Don't expect to be done in 30-45 mins. It's more like 1 hour or more but for me I was fine with them taking their time. I mean I get my hair cut like once every 6 months. Why not spend some more time on it especially if a student is cutting. Shout out to Brooke K. for doing a pretty great job though. I think I got lucky. If you're a risk taker, go for it. If not, better look elsewhere because you may not be happy with the result even if it's $25. Also there's no way to tip when you pay so either bring cash or ask for their Venmo. read more

After my last hair appointment, I was extremely anxious about coming in for my "satisfaction guarantee" appointment, but Aveda made it right. I was matched with a different stylist who took the time to carefully review my hair and listen to what I wanted, and it turned out beautifully. Came here for the 25$ women's haircut and was pleasantly surprised it comes with washing, drying, and styling! It is such a good value. The place has a lot of chairs with not much space in between, so please do take a note of that. When you walk in you are greeted, check in, and go to your chair with the student, who talks to you about what you want and fills out a worksheet that they share with their instructor. I never felt at one point that my hair was going to be in a disaster because if the students are unsure they ask the instructor. Plus, the instructor walks by periodically. I can understand why people would be upset about getting a bad cut but you should understand the risks of going to a beauty school to get a service. One big thing to note: the entire process from washing/drying to cutting to styling took around 2 hours so you do really need to budget time for this. I'm guessing a normal hair salon would take 30 minutes for the same process. I will definitely start coming here to get affordable haircuts in Seattle! read more

Amazing experience! I got a haircut from Erin and it was the most enjoyable haircut ever. I appreciated the excited curious energy she displayed. I didn't expect so much to be done for a 25 dollar hair cut. My hair was evaluated, washed, cut, and styled. I don't mind the atmosphere and longer time it took because of the amazing price. The students have such a fresh and excited energy that is refreshing. One of the highlights was I commented on how I loved the sparkly strands in her hair and she offered replicating it in my hair too! She went above and beyond for offering to do that on me. I had a terrible experience here on August 28, 2023; I felt dismissed and belittled by one of the instructors. Previously, I would go here every three months for a facial for approximately the last two years. I was diagnosed with cancer in December 2022 and this was one of the few treats I had from my previous life. I always had excellent experiences and service in the past, including my two visits in early 2023. This last time, however, was very different. It started well enough, the student was attentive and friendly. But then her instructor, whom I had never met before, came in and she was AWFUL. I didn't catch her name, because I was seeing red by the end (but she had glasses and long brown hair). She told me that Aveda could not provide any services for me, because of my cancer and,--I quote-- they "couldn't have a student working on me." I told her that I had facials since the diagnosis and I wasn't trying to hide anything. She said, in a flippant tone, "someone wasn't doing their job." She went on to tell me how she'd worked with oncology patients in the best and massages can spread cancer cells and so on; a cursory Google search would have let her know that myth has been largely debunked (and on top of she is NOT an oncologist). I also reminded her I was having a FACIAL, which is far away from my tumor site. To make matters worse, she decided that it was okay to have this discussion in front of other students and the one client that was in the room (there were no separators up that day). She made me feel like I was doing something wrong. I don't even think she discussed this with the student assigned to me before coming in. She had no tact or empathy at all. Before I left, I let her know that I did not appreciate the treatment. She gave me a pretty insincere apology, only because I was upset. She wasn't apologetic before that. I called corporate the same day to lodge a complaint, but no one even bothered to call me back. It's clear that this treatment comes from the top down these days. It's sad. It's bad enough being a cancer patient, but now I will constantly worry about being treated badly because of it. I will never step foot in there again. read more

I've had my hair colored here multiple times in the past and have always loved it. The stylists and the service this institute provides are amazing. The actual reason for this review is simply to provide feedback on my most recent interaction with a receptionist. Consider that English is my second language. I called today (4/7/21) at 10am to make an appt for my husband and me. The woman who answered my call asked some questions that were delivered quickly and I couldn't understand completely, so I asked her to repeat. I asked two times and the second time she let out a loud sigh like she was annoyed with being asked to repeat her question. I found this very unprofessional and disrespectful. These types of behavior need to be called out so that they can be addressed by management, especially when these attitudes come from a person who directly interacts with customers. The experience was unacceptable and I hope this front desk receptionist can learn to be more empathetic in how she interacts with others that may want a service there, specifically with those where English is not their native language. read more

Updated review! Unlike my last visit, this one was a dream! The new space is very fresh and inviting - I felt super relaxed even with the noisy atmosphere. Shamana cut my hair but Jahna, the master instructor, was the standout star of the day. Something about her just felt so warm that I felt comfortable to ask her questions I have not addressed in the past. She handled it with grace and gave me the best suggestions since she has thin/super fine hair like me. It was so nice to talk to someone who understands how even the slight bit of product can weigh our hair down. She also helped answer some scalp questions I had and gave me a few remedies to try.
