Im from out of state, if this is what passes as good pizza in this part of Ohio then I feel bad for yall. This is a chewy flavorless abomination. I've had better frozen pizza. On the Plus side its cheap. read more

I think (actually know) Avalanche is the best pizza in Athens. I love their specialty pies and all the choices of toppings. My littlest kids like the classics, the bigger ones like the Great Steak and Potato pizza, and my oldest son's favorite combination is artichoke and mushrooms. My friend and I like to share pizzas with lots of veggies. Their tomato sauce is organic now, and tastes great. Be sure to check out their specials, too. The three-pizza deal is great. Another thing I like is that everybody there is friendly. Avalanche is local, too! The owner makes fantastic and unusual breads for the Athens Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings, too---I love those! read more

If you come to the Athens area you need to try this place. Some of the best pizza I have ever had.

Best pizza in tow but some things they advertise as fresh ARE NOT. Some of the people that answer the phone are very nice and some are short and rude. Overall though, good eatin read more

This place has great pizza but for the second time in a row, it took over TWO HOURS for them to deliver. I know lots of people have had a similar experience. They do not prioritize delivering pizzas in a timely manner read more

Apparently I'm in the minority, but while I love the sustainable, locavore approach of Avalanche, it is rather disappointing in practice. They charge ridiculous prices for toppings, first of all, and then often don't even use that much of the topping. We once paid $20 for a vegan pizza, only to have a sprinkling of toppings. In addition, their pizzas are often undercooked, yet somehow take upwards of 45 min to arrive (and we live like 2 min. away). Their service is AWFUL, awful, awful. We once used a coupon for three med. one topping pizzas because we had family in town. When the delivery driver showed up, they brought us one small pizza with three toppings (for $30) then proceeded to call their manager and have him yell at us on speakerphone for not ordering correctly in front of our guests. Even if we WERE at fault (which I feel that we weren't!) that is a terrible customer service practice, and needless to say we were pretty furious and stopped ordering from them after that. I really hate that this is the only game in town in terms of pizza. If Della Zona were open more often, I would only buy pizza there. Avalanche really needs to step it up in terms of service and delivery. read more

Best damn pizza in SE Ohio! Love all of the vegetarian options! San Andreas Fault, Veggie Rainbow and Soilent Green just to name a few! Highly recommended!!! read more

The pizza is decent, but the customer service is non-existent. We ordered for delivery, which we rarely do because of exorbitant wait times, which unfortunately was the case with the latest delivery order. The pizza was delivered after an hour and 15 minutes (we were quoted 45 minuted when we placed the order), and when we sat down and opened the box, it wasn't even the right pizza! It was almost 9 p.m. by this time, and we couldn't wait any longer, so we told the driver there was no need to remake the pizza. I was frustrated, and hungry, so I called the shop to speak to the manager, as well, and boy, was that a mistake. He was extremely rude, and told me that he would credit our account and hung up on me when I was starting to ask a follow up question about the credit, since my husband payed cash. I sent an email as a follow up, and the same manager sent me a very rude reply. There are other pizza places in town that are equally good IMHO, and I could do without the side of attitude at this place. Very disappointing. read more

I had a personal pizza here when I was in Athens visiting OU. The pizza was scrumptious, the quality shocked me. I was surprised to find such great food in this tiny town. Avalanche offers plenty of original specials to choose from. The wings were not great, but I still managed to finish all of them. The pizza is not thin crust nor deep dish, it is somewhere between. I believe the cheese, fresh ingredients and sauce; set this spot apart. read more

We stopped here on our way back home on a Sunday morning around 11:00. We were promptly greeted and our order was taken. We were told 15 minutes and in 14 minutes we were out the door with pizza! I ordered the Royale with cheese and I have to say it was the best cheese pizza I have ever had! Just the right amount of all the cheeses. My husband had the K-2 and he loved it. Generous amounts of fresh toppings too. If we are ever back in Athens, we will definately get pizza here! read more

Amazing pizza! great service and a must place to eat while in Athens! you should give this place a chance to prove that old style pizza still exists! read more

Yes, the pizza is delicious but its not life changing. In general, whenever I order from Avalanche the pizza takes forever. My most recent order I was quoted a 30 minute estimate, and the pizza was delivered an hour and a half later. When I called to check in on an order, I was hurried off the phone saying "its coming" and 20 minutes later the pizza arrives cold and the cheesy sticks were dry. The pizza is expensive, and for the price of the product in a town like this one I think Avalanche should really put some effort into customer service. read more

Good pizza, quick-ish delivery for the most part. I'm really not as big of a fan as some people seem to be, however, since I don't really find Avalanche Pizza to be all *that* special. Anyway, it's a nice relatively local option. The vegan option is also helpful. read more

Pizza is alright. If you like different topping you'll like this place. Wings, and breadsticks weren't good. Have not tried sandwiches. Service is pretty slow. read more

Great crust. Fresh vegetables as topping. Delicious tomato sauce.

When I came here I waited at the counter for ten minutes as the staff didn't even acknowledge me and my friend as we wanted to order a pizza. O sure you can have good pizza but customer service comes first. Probably never going there again. read more

My favorite pizza in the world! Great cheese sticks, fresh sauces and the best combinations of toppings! YUM

Best Pizza that I have ever had. Dough and Sauce made daily right in the store. Over 50 toppings to choose from, but I couldn't decide what combination to go with. So I looked over their 30 some "Signature" pizzas (several of which have won awards) and went with a Batgirl. I thought I would try it because I love corn and potatoes, but have never had that on a pizza. Who would have thought, but it was amazing. The guy who made it likes to made his pies into "an edible work of art" so it looked so beautiful that I didn't want to destroy it by eating it at first but was very glad that my hunger took over. It took a little while to get the order because they were so busy, but well worth the wait. I can't wait to get back over to Athens and try another of their combinations. read more

The best pizza in Athens, Ohio (pop. @24,000), but not nearly as good as your average piece of NYC pie or, sad to say, even Bertucci's. The main problem is that the crust at Avalanche is, as a pizza-loving friend from out of town put it, "quite bready": it is not chewy with a nice crust. (The pizzas sold at the farmer's market on Saturdays compare favorably in this respect.) The cheese on Avalanche's pies is also very bland. It's true that Avalanche sells extremely inventive pizzas, but a plain cheese pizza -- and this what I judge a pizzeria by -- is just meh. read more

The pizza is typically good. Delivery time is horrible. No one should have to wait 90 minutes to get a pizza delivered, only to have it cold on arrival. And the "Sorry, we got really busy" excuse doesn't fly. Expand capacity or refuse orders if you can't fill them in a timely manner. read more

I don't see what all the hype is about? Yes, great variety and interesting toppings but not very good pizza!!! I visited yesterday and my stomach has been sick ever since. Maybe because of the endless amount of grease and brown(yuck) chicken that was on my Godzilla pizza. I was SO disappointed - was looking forward to good pizza! On a positive note -the service was fast and friendly. read more

Pretty good pizza, its reputation is what's keeping it alive at this point I would assume, a little too greasy but some times that's what you're in the mood for read more

2 hours have passed and still waiting for my delivery. At 1 hour I called, they told me it would arrive within 2 minutes. Called back 15 minutes later, am told it's just coming out of the oven. 30 more minutes have passed and nothing. HORRIBLE read more

If I lived in the area, I might order here a bit more than the other places, if the employees were a bit more personable. As far as the taste of my pie (which I shared with others), the ham was a bit tough, the dough was a bit bland, and there wasn't enough sauce to taste. Actually, the menu said that the sauce was special. I didn't taste enough to have a gustatory comparison. The price was ok, albeit on the high side. I would compare the pizza of the same kind to Domino's, although the person who took my order at Domino's took a little extra care with special seasoning in the crust and acknowledging my love for sauce and cheese. Plus, and I only waited 15 minutes for my order. Papa John's has ample sauce, and their toppings taste very fresh. I wonder how Avalanche gets the "voted #1" status. Who votes? What panel? Objectivity? How are the various accolades awarded? Perhaps if I would visit again in the future, I might have a better experience, but that would make the service inconsistent, wouldn't it? read more

Seriously folks, the Emperor has no clothes. I've yet to figure out what the fuss is all about and now have a serious mistrust of the Food Network to boot. Best pizza in the USA? Hardly. I am new to Athens and tried this place three different times, three different pizzas and each time was struck with a deep sense of disappointment and buyer's remorse. This pizza is nothing special and in reality is not very good. Tonight we tried the bbq chicken pizza and the pizza was cold and the chicken on the pizza looked old and dry. I saw the bacon on the pizza but I was unable to identify the gray lumps of mystery ingredient on the pizza. This is not good pizza, don't believe the hype. I've had good pizza, really good pizza...and this is average at best. Maybe there is a bit of resting on one's laurels going on here...I saw all the bold statements of greatness plastered all over the windows of the business, past awards granted, etc...but sorry guys, you're really only as good as the last pizza you made and unfortunately, it was underwhelming. read more

good about 60% of the time. the quality of the finished product varies depending on whos working. they are capable of making good pizza but it is a gamble on whether you will get one or not. read more
