Stan and his team helped my parents install a new media screen in their car which works great. Before leaving, my mom tried to use voice commands through her phone and was running into problems. This had nothing to do with the new screen so it would have been fair if the team at Auto Acoustics had said that they weren't experts in phones and recommended my parents go home and do some research and call if my mom couldn't solve it herself. Instead they continued working with my parents, doing some online research themselves, and patiently and politely making good suggestions and listening carefully (I was on the phone so I could hear the interaction) until they got everything working and they made sure my mom understood how to use the new setup. I am grateful for their help since I live in another state and can't be there in person to work with my parents. In a world where there are business that do not stand behind what they sell, AA stands out for super customer service. I purchased a third-party Carplay system for my BMW from them three years ago. I ran into an issue with it last week. Well out of warranty, they diagnosed and repaired the issue in less than an hour. Fantastic customer service by Stan who "listened" to what I was looking for in a car audio upgrade. Told me my amp choice (Alpine KTA-450) was perfect for me and gave me speaker choices in addition to what I came in thinking I wanted. Was very patient as I compared many of the speakers they had set up in a nice listening area. I decided to go with 4 Kickers (KSC6504) which sounded amazing in store and even better in the car! All hardware the same price as seen on Crutchfield and labor very reasonable. The install was completed in the quoted 4 hours and expertly done. The car looks exactly as I gave it to them. TL;DR: super-clean installation, fair prices, exemplary customer service Took my 2019 Corvette to AA to hardwire the radar detector and install a dash cam. The installation turned out great and really cleaned up the look of the dash. Unbeknownst to any of us, the new model Momento dash cam was leaking K-band radar and driving the radar detector crazy. Stan at AA immediately contacted Momento, had a replacement shipped right away, and made the switch in 10 minutes. Another shop might have said "contact Momento--not our problem" but instead Stan said "that's absolutely unacceptable" and made it right. read more

Auto Acoustics was recommended by a friend who has utilized them for his vehicle window tint for years. I had never had windows tinted before, so I followed his advice and drove to Durham. This place takes pride in their work, and did a fantastic job on my vehicle. They asked if I could return a few days later so they could check something which they said was not laying on the glass quite the way they wanted. They thanked me for coming back, and apologized for the inconvenience. My back window had proven challenging, and they re-did that window to make sure it was done properly. My experience with this company has been very poor. Over the course of several years I've purchase a radio, two amps and six speakers and I've had issues with the radio and speakers. I was advised at the time of purchase that if anything went wrong, I could bring it back and they would make it right. That hasn't been the case. Instead of experiencing an effortless repair or exchange, I've been given the run around. I am having an issue with one of four speakers and contacted Auto Acoustics to advise them of the issue and requested that they fix it or replace it. We've gone back and forth for weeks where I've had to negotiate them standing by what I was told when I made my purchase. I do not recommend doing business with this company unless you want to haggle with them if their workmanship falls apart. read more

I needed to improve the sound quality in my 2019 Nissan Frontier. Other shops recommended new amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers - a big investment. These guys are fantastic. Had all my car stereo speakers upgraded and got ceramic tint on all the windows, including clear film for the windshield. The stereo sounds amazing now no matter how loud I turn it up. The tint looks fantastic and helps keep the car cooler (and prevents me from getting a sunburn). One speaker had an intermittent buzz to it because of the way the Honda door brackets were designed; I brought the car back to them and they fixed it right away. Everyone there was super friendly and professional and they really went out of their way to make sure everything was done right and that I understood what they were doing. Wow. The guys at Auto Acoustics are great! Last year they helped me with installing a satellite radio in my husband's car. They didn't try to oversell me for what I was looking for, and got me in and out of there quickly, as promised. My husband had been there before with his and other cars, so, that's where I went, too.... Immediately my husband realized the satellite antenna didn't work. Alternately I forgot about it, I didn't have the time to get there, or my husband needed the car. For a year! FINALLY, this week I brought it back over to Auto Acoustics, fully expecting to pay them for a new antenna and repair, because it has been A YEAR (I know, because it was for my husband's birthday last year, and alas, it is his birthday, again!). I'm writing a review for work that I didn't have done. I have a lot of respect for this place. I spoke with them a few months ago about getting blind spot sensors put in my car. They did some research and waited for some new tech to come out. After deciding on a product they were comfortable with I brought the car in. It turns out that after market sensors don't work well for hybrids. What I respect is that they did due-diligence to test the product out before drilling holes in the car and when they found it wasn't working properly called the company and the company told them they recently discovered this problem as well with hybrids. I'm bummed I couldn't get the installation, but am happy they were responsible and didn't just try to install them. When a proper product comes on the market I will definitely go through Auto Acoustics. read more

The entire stereo system in my Jetta failed in the middle of a cross-country trip-- AAARRGGGHH!!!-- so when we got back to Durham I went over to Auto Acoustics to see what my options were. That was the beginning of the saga. The first system I chose, a Blaupunkt high-end model, meant for VWs & other European cars, looked great but was real pricey --$800. After mulling it over, I decided to go for it, and Stan ordered it. He told me he'd call me when he knew when he could get it in... a few days later, he called to say it was discontinued. Grrr. Back to the shop, and with his helpful, no-pressure advice, I chose a much more modest Blaupunkt model without all the bells and whistles. He ordered & installed it and it was a perfect fit. 5-star service all around. About a month later, as I was driving along it suddenly lost the connection and stopped playing --I'd been listening to a podcast on my phone-- and then restarted. This happened a few more times. I went back to Stan, worried that I would have a hard time explaining this crazy experience, but he replaced the whole unit without hesitation. It was 5-star service for sure. Another month went by and on a trip to the mountains I tried to tune in to WPAQ, my favorite Old-Time music station & the only thing I listen to on the AM dial, and was amazed to find there was no signal at all on the AM band. Back to Stan... he quickly found & fixed the error -- something to do with the wiring. 5-star service again! Another month went by and then one day last week the radio display went blank on the first programmed station only (???) AND the display button, which you would normally use to change the display mode, entirely stopped working... it started changing Source, not Display. Weird. Back to Stan again-- this time he swapped out the whole faceplate in about 5 minutes and so I am once again a happy camper. So I've had great service and support from Auto Acoustics and recommend them highly. Blaupunkt- not so much. read more

My auxiliary port had stopped working so I called to schedule an appointment. I don't remember the guy's name but he told me it was a simple replacement that I could probably do myself but that I was also welcome to bring it by anytime. I ended up buying the port online and making a half hearted attempt to install it. After I failed, I called these guys in the morning and they said they were slammed but could squeeze me in in the next couple of hours. They call, I show up, and they guy pulls the car around back and back out in about 5 minutes. He installed the port and didn't even charge me. Fantastic customer service! read more

I had window tint installed on my new 2014 Prius a few weeks ago. I called and set up a appointment for 12 noon the following week. My car was taken in the back with in ten min, I walked next door and got a hair cut, did a great job there too btw. Came back to the store, played on the iPhone for a little while and all done I'm guessing two hours wait time, surprised me it went so fast. I got the legal (boo NC laws) ceramic tint which comes with a warranty etc etc. It's not real cheap but I also didn't have to deal with put tint on the small front window of the Prius either or the rear window with defroster. *important note, if you ever have to take the rear tint off let the pros do it so you do not destroy the defrost system. I have had this tint now for a month maybe? Wow does it make a big difference in the internal temp when parked in the sun, combine that with a front windshield sun blocker thingy and you have a fairly cool car to get into even in our wonderful summers. As a side note I have done business with these gentleman way back when I was a teen (43 now) when they opened their first shop in hillsborough. They did high quality work on my stereo and security system way back then and I am happy to report their work ethic appears to remain in tact to this day. Clearly you don't stay in business for 25 years without treating your customers "right"! So yes I gave five stars because I have found them to be trustworthy and very well versed in their chosen field of expertise. Like many other reviewers, our experience with the crew of Phelan (sales), Stan & Rob (mechanic) was very positive. We were able to make an appt., and Phelan was punctual & friendly in waiting on us. After hearing our basic needs for a combination audio & HVAC system, Phelan & Co. recommended a relatively affordable & yet functional unit. The unit was efficiently installed, we received a brief tutorial on it, and we were out-the-door on schedule. Soon afterwards, our car's climate-control system exhibited a problem with the driver's-side A/C, and I returned to AA to have them inspect their work and see if they could account for the problem. After thoroughly examining the system, Rob concluded that our car likely coincidentally developed a driver's side A/C problem, independent of their installation process. I subsequently had our mechanic check the car, and he confirmed both Rob's suspicions and the problem being unrelated to AA's work. So, I applaud Rob's efforts in standing behind AA's job for us, and properly directing us for our needed repairs. So far, both the audio and climate control systems are performing very well! read more

We have converted our 2000 Dodge Ram Maxi van into a two person RV and the radio that came from the factory was very outdated. Auto Acoustics installed a Pioneer system with Car Play/Sirius - new speakers and while they had the van, they installed a four camera video system with front camera, side cameras and rear view camera. The work was excellent. The recommended equipment was dead on. We could not be happier. Very pleased--with service and staff and camera. Very professional, courteous, prompt. We recently had an aftermarket back-up camera installed in our Toyota Corolla. After reading reviews, we dropped by the shop to get an idea of what was possible and the price. We were very impressed and decided later that day to make an appointment for the job. We were able to get a Saturday appointment within a few weeks. The install was done in 2 hours (just like they had told us) and we picked up our car and have been happy with the results. We think the camera quality is better than the factory one in our new Subaru. The job was clean, neat & tidy and went well. The camera is warrantied for 3 years. Highly recommend this place. I had a sound system installed that randomly turning on/off and had tons of annoying road noise. I hesitated on getting it fixed because I thought it would cost an arm and a leg and was concerned afterwards it still wouldn't be fixed. It was bothering me so much I finally decided to do something about it. I worked with Stan over at Auto Acoustics and man he knows his stuff. The problem was pretty tough to diagnose, but he kept working at it until he was sure he identified the issue properly, then fixed it perfectly at a very reasonable price. I recently had a stereo system installed in my 1972 Bronco by Auto Acoustics and one of the pieces of equipment was faulty. AA offered replace the unit free of charge and while they were changing out the unit, my starter solenoid seized up. Since I was in the shop waiting for the work to be done, the guys gave me a ride to Autozone to get a replacement solenoid, installed it for me and got everything back tip top shape. i had a speakers amps i really felt like they didn't want my business owner was very disrespectful did not want to talk to me when i walked in this place is very raciest to blacks. i checked on the speakers I've purchase and was not the one i purchase took my truck back and did not want to replace the speakers until i came back a week later with receipt and i still have problems with right speaker not working went back three times still not working. they tried to get me to purchase another amp and it was nothing wrong with amp i purchase this is not a good place to purchase audio. my next step is small claims court. read more

Richard the owner answered when I first called to describe my issue (2009 Corolla radio just suddenly went out while driving), he was a friendly, integrity filled straight-shooter said it sounded like the radio was going out & quoted a very reasonable price for new radio + installation but also asked me to come on by so they could look at it to make sure it wasn't something simple like a loose wire because he didn't want me buying a new radio if I didn't need it. Got to love a business man who is in the business of treating people right over up selling! Brought my car by and Stan, who is wonderful, did a thorough review of my car before confirming the radio was going out. They ordered the part and set up an install appointment. My old radio popped on/off during the week and Stan patiently took several of my calls when I rang to update the strangeness of that & also ask if I should get new speakers. Stan recommended waiting to see how the new radio improved the car before buying more speakers, again w the customer first over up sell first attitude which was so appreciated and refreshing! Took it in today, Richard & Stan were both there & great! Not only did they have me in/out in under 45m but when I mentioned my key fob was dead and Toyota said it would be $400 to reprogram they both shook their heads and then proceeded to exchange the battery in my key fob and now after over 2-years wo being able to lock/unlock w a click my key works! Got into my car to check out the new radio and it makes the whole car feel brand spanking new: great sound and all the amenities including Bluetooth w a little dash mounted microphone. We recently bought a 2012 Prius which we love, but we find the rear visibility is pretty bad. Our other car has a backup camera so we were already a little spoiled by that and decided we would like to have one added to the Prius. We shopped around a little bit and talked to a couple of people. Richard was extremely responsive via email (the only way I tried to contact him), he asked me several questions and then quoted me a price. I felt a lot more comfortable with him than with the people at Best Buy who did not seem to knowledgeable about the options and did not have any cameras in stock. We made the appointment with Richard, (all via email which I find super convenient) and my wife took the car in. He told us it would take about 2 hours and that's pretty much exactly what it took. He did not charge us anything upfront, we paid him what he quoted, plus tax after the install was completed. We are very happy with the camera, it ties into the radio display and actually is better quality than what is standard in my 2014 subaru. We would definitely go back here if we have any other car electronics needs in the future. read more
