Aquatic therapy offers my son, who has cerebral palsy and is non-ambulatory, the opportunity to move, stretch and stengthen his body like no other physical therapies. I have run several of their races over the years. The Pacific Half Marathon (2012); the Old Agoura…read more10k (2013); and the Cheseboro Half Marathon (2014, 2017). The only race I haven't done is the 5k. All the races are very well organized and usually start at the exact announced time. You can usually pick up your bib and bag in the finish area but it's recommended that you arrive early. The alternative is to pick it up at the expo on Thursday or Friday before the race - that's a good option if you're local so there is less stress than if you had to pick it up the morning of. If you arrive early enough there is plenty of parking in the mall parking lots nearby but the later you arrive, the crazier it gets. There is a decent number of port-a-johns near the start area but the lines tend to get a bit long close to the start...so I would like a bit more of these. As for the races themselves, neither of them is particularly fast because each one include a significant number of hard hills or technical terrain. The Pacific Half is entirely on roads and has an almost mile-long hard climb between mile 3 and 4, and some hard rollers before and after that. Cheseboro is about half on dirt trails, with short sections of technical terrain, and a gradual climb from Mile 3 to Mile 8 (steepest part is after mile 7). Miles 9 through 13 are mostly downhill but there are still a couple of climbs that will get to your legs late in the race. The 10k has a gradual incline miles 2-3 and some hard short climbs late in the race. So unless you're new to running and or if it's your first race at the distance, don't expect big PRs on these races. However they are quite scenic and make for a great workout. One cool thing about this race: race pictures are free! Take that, LA marathon and Rock and Roll races... So why not 5 stars? Well over the years they have cut the costs regarding shirts and medals. For instance back in 2013, the Cheseboro Half runners got a very nice tech shirt designed solely for that race. The design, quality and color was very cool. This year, the shirt was generic for all races and it had the logo stuck on the shirt instead of imprinted - it makes it uncomfortable to wear it because of the fact that the logo is not directly "inside" the shirt. Also the medals are the same for all races - only difference is the necklaces.

I ran the Pacific Half Marathon this year and it was a spectacular race. The scenery all along the…read moreroad course is stunning! There are so many hidden gems along the run and the distraction really makes the time pass quickly. The course is quite challenging with lots of long, gradual uphills. I'm so happy that I did hill repeats as part of my training since I saw lots of casualties fall back. The water stations were supplied with lots of friendly, smiling volunteers and no shortage of water, electrolyte drink or energy gels. There were also lots of porta potties without lines. There were several volunteers stationed along the course cheering us on. There wasn't alot of community members out cheering like there are at bigger events but it was still a great event. The finish area at Chumash Park was bustling with excitement. I really wanted some Whole Foods pancakes after the run but the line was a good 30 minutes long. Pretty much all of the brunch food lines were long so in my need for some quick replenishment, I settled on a banana and an FRS electrolyte drink. The lines were so long because all of the different races end in the same location. Parking was a bit chaotic since my husband waited for me at the finish. Luckily we have a friend who let us have his parking spot in his condo complex so we only had a half mile walk back to the car. I'd definitely do this race again since it was so scenic and challenging and the staff were so amazing. Chip Time: 2:06:31

My 6 year old went to Makos surf camp for spring break and had an incredible experience! She had…read morenever surfed before but was standing up on a board, having a blast, on the first day. By the end of the week, she was confident on the surfboard and in the ocean. The instructors are awesome with kids; encouraging and positive. They reapply sunscreen throughout the day and there are plenty of options for the kids to rest and do other water/ beach activities if they get tired of surfing. We will definitely keep Makos in our camp rotation !

Tom was wonderful and got my 7 year old son in for a surf lesson same day. He then paired him with…read morea young man named Miller for the lesson. It was the perfect pairing. My son trusted him immediately. My son till two weeks prior was scared of the ocean and would not step near it. Miller made him comfortable and was playful with him. He was a great teacher and you can tell he really cared. I would highly recommend Mako Surf Club for lessons. Its a great location for learning and Tom and his team are so great. I thought they were especially safe and great with kids. Miller was so lovely to my son and even played soccer with him after the lesson. It was very generous and sweet. My son will have a core memory about this, I know it! We will for sure be using them again too.

You simply cannot understand Foxfield unless you have lived Foxfield…read more You do not take a child who, in August, was not trusted to control a nearly 30-year-old trail horse even while an adult led her, and have that same child competing at 2'6" the following July by accident. Liv had just turned 11 in June. That transformation came from her determination, extraordinary training, countless hours of work, and a community that supported her every step of the way. Foxfield has genuinely changed the trajectory of Liv's life. Katie is a Foxfield trainer and has been at the heart of Liv's riding journey. She is one of the most incredible human beings I have ever met. She meets Liv exactly where she is, challenges her, gives her tough love when she needs it, supports her when she struggles, and lets Liv drive the show. Liv asks for more, and Katie helps her earn each next step. She sees the whole child, not just the rider, and the trust between them is extraordinary. Katie has been the most important individual influence in Liv's development, while also being part of an exceptional team. Janie, Chloe, and Lara teach Liv in group lessons, each bringing something different and valuable. Shelly somehow runs everything, so outsiders may think of her only as the barn manager, but everyone at Foxfield knows she is also an incredible trainer--if you know, you know. Susie is a legend, and Liv's enormous respect for her is completely deserved. The care extends far beyond lessons. Jaime has helped all three of my daughters learn the real foundations of horsemanship--from tacking up and mounting correctly to helping Liv fit the proper bit and girth when she leased her first horse. Then there is the Foxfield kid community. Before Liv's first show, an incredible high school senior from her own school spent an entire day helping her groom both horses, organize her tack, pack the tack box, and create a checklist. On show morning, we arrived before sunrise behind a close friend's car. Two older Foxfield girls jumped out to open the gate, and I watched Liv immediately relax. She knew she was not doing this alone. We had two horses to wrap and load, tack boxes to organize, and no real understanding of the process. The Foxfield kids simply stepped in. Some were showing; others came only to help. They prepared horses, loaded equipment, set up at the show, managed Liv's transitions between horses, answered questions, and anticipated what she needed. They did not just cheer for her--they made the day possible. They were calm, competent, hardworking, and generous. I have never met a better group of young people, and Liv gets to call them her friends. I have three daughters who could not be more different. Liv would happily live at the barn. My middle daughter loves horses but wants to progress at her own pace. My youngest is athletic and fearless in most areas of life, but riding still overwhelms and confuses her. Foxfield understands that they are three different children. They meet each one exactly where she is and make her feel that she belongs. There are not enough words to explain what Katie has given Liv, or what the entire Foxfield team and community have given all three of my daughters. I trust these people with my children. There is no higher compliment I can give. Foxfield creates capable riders, but more importantly, it creates capable humans--people who work hard, take responsibility, notice when someone needs help, step in without being asked, and make the people around them better. My daughter chose her as her hero for a school essay due to the the support and guidance she has given her during her riding journey. The horses are amazing! She definitely has her favorites, but having the ability to ride the various school horses has definitely helped her become a better rider. Riding at Foxfield has given my daughter confidence and continues to teach her discipline and responsibility. The grounds are also gorgeous and it's a lovely place to sit and watch my daughter do what she loves.

On first blush you think...it's amazing that there aren't more Masters Programs in the Los Angeles…read morearea. After all, we do live in the desert. Then you realize...everyone already has pools, oh; and we live by the beach. Anyhoo...after a long three year break, I crave the thrill of victory and have taken up triathlon again. I used to swim with SCAQ when I lived in Venice (another very good program), but it's just too far for me to drive for a pre-dawn workout. The program is held in the Cal Lutheran Pool which was only recently finished. The pool is an outstanding 50 meters which will put the hurt on you if like me, you are woefully unfit. You can't fake fitness in swimming. Nancy, the head masters coach is quite accomplished...UCLA All American, Top Ten in the world in backstroke, etc. etc. She's a good coach who keeps her eye on everyone and gives regular feedback. Her workouts are tough...especially the 1.5 hour workouts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They even have another coach take the beginners in the 25 meter pool to teach noobs pool ettiquette, strokes, flip turns and all that other neat stuff. While they have a lot of items you will need...pull buoys, kick-boards, fins, you may want to invest in those AND a swim cap (if you're a lady), clear and dark goggles (if you're going to swim during the day), hand paddles (start with small ones that fit the size of your hands), wait and buy your fins from Nancy. Also I noted that people are using snorkels when doing pull drills. A couple things BRING WATER!!! Yes, you're in the water, but you still need to drink. If you're a guy and you're not used to wearing those lovely package revealing speedos, you can keep your goodies under wraps with the "down to the knee" versions at your local Sports Chalet. They have locker rooms with showers.
