I have a 1978 R100/7 that I had purchased a few years ago through auction. It came with a full fairing and some other aftermarket BS, which I immediately removed. After getting rid of the items that did not belong, I could never get the bike to run how it was supposed to, so I took it in to Steven to look at. He diagnosed some problems that I didn't realize I had and discussed them with me before moving forward. I thought his prices were very competitive and I fully trust his considerations when working on my bike. After getting this bike back I find that I am riding it more and more. It rides so much smoother now, and definitely more quickly with faster response... it seems like everything about the bike has been reset to "how it should be", which is awesome. Nice guy, but experienced several problems with the quality and speed of work First, I dropped off my bike, and it was not ready until 2.5 weeks later, even though the work was only 4 hours of labor. He did not order the tires I requested until after completing the other tasks, adding a week of delay on. Second, all of the aux power and side blinker lights were working when I dropped off the bike. But after getting the bike back, nothing worked, and he insisted that it was due to the aftermarket turn signal lights. However, it was merely that he put the wires in backwards (positive to negative and negative to positive) on the signal lights. I never got the powerlet outlet working yet. He went ahead and blamed the 3rd party lights for his error of swapping the wires, and refused to try to fix his problem, forcing me to waste time and energy trouble shooting all parts of the electrical system only to find the most simple of errors. read more

I've got an old airhead that needed some final drive refit and a fork rebuild. This is the kind of work I can't or won't do myself--I don't have a garage, and the FD refit really needs special tools and a series of heatings to get the parts in/out of the housing. I am otherwise doing all the repairs on my vehicles myself, and I am very picky about letting anyone touch my motors. On a lark I read about Austin Moto Works and realized it was only 1/4 mile from my house--sounds like a good omen. I dropped the bike off and was comfortable with leaving my beloved motorcycle in a shop that was clean and orderly--it passed the sniff test. The best part of my experience with Steven and AMW, other than the correct repairs to my BMW, was the fact that he *called me* and gave me regular updates on the progress of the bike. I've never had a mechanic do this before (usually I have to call the mechanic and "remind" them about my vehicle), and I was pleased to know that someone was staying ahead of my own curiosity about the progress of the repairs. My wife, who knows how picky I am about mechanics, was surprised by my low stress in this situation. Steven approached the work with honesty and didn't oversell me on extras. I got the bike back in good shape and everything was in order. If you've got a BMW and can't/won't try Lonestar BMW or one of the other shops, give Steven a call. read more

Needed to get new tires for my 2018 BMW Grand America. Was highly referred to Austin Moto Works. Tough to find. Absolutely felt at ease when I walked into the garage. I'd say about 95% of the bikes in the garage were stunning classic BMW bikes. The owner Steve pulled out his catalogue of tires for my bike. Bought the tires and he quoted me competitive price to swap them out. He ordered the tires and knocked out the labor. They also had a small inventory hard to get Moto Stuka gloves. Bought a pair. Guy seemed intimidated that I know a little bit about BMW motorcycle maintenance, which anybody can pick up from reading the owner's manual. I gave him a punch list straight from the factory BMW Motorad recommended service schedule. He said he doesn't work that way, that he will look at the customer's bike and tell them what it needs. He apparently does not want to listen to what the customer wants. Its his way or the highway, so I picked up my bike and took it elsewhere. read more

I own a R100GSPD and do a ride every year from Miami to California. This year I couldnt do the ride or so I thought. .. I needed to be in San Antonio on business and I found a 1980 R100RT on craigslist. It was a good deal but it had issues, a lot of them. I Googled a,d found Steven. I called him and I must say he is a little quirky. So I rode the RT up to see him. I discovered his quirkyness was that he is extremely qualified and honest and he is so clear and upfront about the bikes that it is foriegn compared to what you usually find. He tore the bike down and put it back together. Every part he changed he was thorough about the part, the reason and its interelation to the other parts on the bike. Long story short, when I started the bike again when he was done, it fired right up, idled beautifully and took me to Lubbock, Albuquerque, Sedona, Flagstaff, VEgas, Death Valley, Barstow, LA, Cambria, Slovang and back. The bike ran better than my 1150 GSA I had a few years ago. I could not have been more confident. He has a great common-sense low overhead warehouse on N. Lamar. He has many airheads both his and customers and you can tell, he will either repair it right or not touch it. He will tell you upfront ...:" if you want it running great, I will tell you what it needs, if you want to tell him, dont fix this, dont replace that....BUT MAKE IT RUN GREAT, he won't touch it and rightly so. Good shop. Steven is super knowledgable about all-things BMW, and I trust him WAY more than anyone at Lonestar. I don't know what the hell they are doing over there. Anyhow, I took my 2009 G650 GS here for a new battery, and had the front forks rebuilt as well. Look, this is a one-man show, so things don't move super quickly, he has to order most parts since he doesn't keep a huge inventory like a dealer would - but the job is going to get done well, and he's honest. When things were going slow, he called and kept me updated. This will be my regular place now for sure. read more

I had a really quirky problem with my brand new 2014 R1200R. The left side electrical switches worked intermittently. I called Lone Star and they were booked solid for a month and recommended I call Steve at AMW. I am walk in type person, and I really liked that Steve had availability the same day & offered to check it out for me. I recently changed the stock exhaust to after market and was worried there was some connection there maybe. He did check it for me and it was an electrical issue that seems to have solved itself. However, he did open up the left electrical housing and gave it a quick inspection and dint even charge me for it. Thanks Steve!!! read more

If you own a BMW motorcycle, this is the man you want. He is very direct and likes to do things his way, which I think some people interpret as him being rude; I think that same trait goes along with his meticulous attention to detail and high quality of work. Even I thought he came across as terse when I first met him, but he is a chill dude and I will definitely keep coming back. Helped me out with several issues on my '85 K100, including some weird electrical issues and replacing some parts on my clutch. Fair rates and excellent quality of work. I rode my R1100S in the rain from west Texas for several hours and it died on me. I took it to this shop. The damage was awful. Steve explained everything in detail and realizing it would be something expensive, was careful with everything he did. He saved where he could and kept me in the loop all the time, unlike others where I would just get slapped with a bill at the end. He finally got my bike running like before and it's great.
