I'll start off by saying I'm not a "fish-fish" guy but I do enjoy fresh shellfish. In that regard Austin's solidly delivers. We came by after a day at the beach and got them to steam up some shrimp for our group...and boy was that shrimp good! We also picked up some clams for our stay and they were excellent and reasonably priced as well. The place has an old time feel to it and while there we even got a local history lesson from the staff and the lady owner at the register--who is the area matriarch. Excellent variety of fresh local seafood. I've even purchased shrimp with the heads on from this place. Be advised, the kitchen will not always steam your seafood or allow you to order prepared meals. You will order only to have surly woman come from the back and yell she doesn't have time for your order cause the kitchen is too busy. The place is busy! Be prepared to cook your own or skip it. I get local shrimp from here since it is sized and take home and steam myself. My one attempt at ordering crabs was a bust, kitchen too busy. However, based on the crabs from other establishments, I probably didn't miss much. I've never been disappointed by the quality of steamed shrimp I've purchased here. We sit outside and enjoy it on the porch with our drinks. We always get there between lunch and dinner crowds, so we wait maybe 10 minutes before our order is handed to us, steaming hot. On our next visit we're planning on checking out the fried fish and scallops. Keep in mind it's not a restaurant, but a seafood market that serves some great cooked seafood on the side. We LOVE the steamed seafood. It's worth every penny. You can get two or three times the amount of food that you would get at one of the sit-down restaurants and it has amazing flavor. The people are great and there are picnic tables outside if you want to enjoy your meal with the pup. We walked in the beaches all day and hit it on the way out. Its not a sit-in type of place but there is a patio area of you want to eat there. Bottom line, if you are craving seafood, this is the place to go. Great quality and great prices. We had mahi mahi, crab cakes, crab soup, chicken tenders (well, for some non-seafood eater ), steamed shrimps, hush puppies, fries, mac-n-cheese, coleslaw. everything is good. The food was pretty good. The crab cake is one of the best I have ever had. Definitely a must try during your stay in OBX. I also tried the softshell crab sandwich which was good but kind of freaked me out because it was the whole crab...legs and all! This place is so great that we ate there for both lunch & dinner during our visit to the OBX. For lunch, we recommend the Grouper sandwich with Austin's amazing homemade coleslaw and homemade potato chips. The light breading on the fish was a splurge for us but there was not a drip of grease or oil you could see or taste. For dinner, we came back for the fresh caught Red Snapper & some bay Scallops, which we grilled back home. We took them back home to share with our family and they were thrilled that we did! We met members of the 1st, 2nd & 3rd generation of the family who owns & operates this business and got to see photos of the 4th generation, which was displayed in the store. This Place Is Awesome! Love it. If you are in the OBX, stop by. Even when we stay miles away we drive down for seafood regularly. Great prices and family owned store. They added a patio a few years back which is really nice and have awesome lunches. I usually enjoy their fresh shrimp, tuna, and salmon, but, the best deal in town are their clams. They sell a 50 count bag of fresh clams for I think around 15 bucks...I probably bought four of them over a week last vacation. Oh, there is a produce stand in their parking lot, so you can literally get everything you need for dinner on their premise and avoid the grocery store altogether. read more

Wish this was a little closer to the place we were staying in Kitty Hawk. We went there one day and got 3 types of fish, soft shell crabs, shrimp, and clams (little neck, I think--the small ones). Their fish is fresh (with some frozen, I think, but they tell you) and really good. and reasonably priced and they have an amazing selection.. They also have their own seasoning that you could buy (or get with a coupon) that is something like Old Bay (but much better, according to my daughter). We had a feast that night! Most of the complaints from other reviewers seemed to be about the cooked food. We never tried any of their cooked meals, since it seems to be a seafood market, not a restaurant, and I'm guessing the went into the cooked meal business to please people who either didn't want to cook or didn't have any place to cook. So, my suggestion is to go to Austin's for fresh fish to cook. As for the comments about the old lady being rude...she didn't smile much, I agree, but when I asked if they had any coupons out there (since I forgot to check and their are tons of coupons in the area), she pulled out a card with a coupon for a free bag of their own seasoning mix (mentioned above) and said that was the only one, but that I could go ahead and use it. So, maybe not a lot of smiles, but the customer service was over and above. The building is small, but has a lot packed in there. Manuvering around can be slow, since it has always been crowded when we've been there (we've been going there several years), but the staff is helpful when it is your turn. My husband loved the blue crab sandwich and the hush puppies (this is a whole, fried crab with little legs hanging out of the bread--a classic). My son liked the fish and sides. My crab cake sandwich was fine but I think a good crab cake (which it was) doesn't need all the bread of a sandwich. I'd get a crab cake meal next time. The side options were good and the lunch was cheap. This place was exactly what we were looking for in that it was a reputable fish market that also does lunch (rather than an overpriced sit down restaurant). This place is perfect for a quick but delicious (and authentic) lunch while at the beach or get all your seafood noshing needs met while at a nearby vacation rental. We live in California but have family in Virginia and North Carolina and we will definitely be back to Austin's Fish Co. As an aside, there was a sweet little garden market that shares the parking lot (possibly seasonal) with the fish market. Another good source for local food and a great resource for your vacation needs (garden tomatoes, corn, watermelon and peaches). read more

As someone who has lived on and off in the outer banks for 25 plus years it really stinks, but austins has fallen way off. It's a cool spot, but the seafood stinks compared to other local spots. Unfortunately it's a half mile from my house but I'll happily drive to Collington to get good (and actually local) seafood. Even Harris teeter has better seafood. Our most recent experience, some friends grabbed some cooked shrimp as a snack before dinner and they smelled so bad we only let the kids eat a few before we decided to toss out the rest. I refused to eat them but my wife's description was mealy and Bland which usually translates to frozen gulf shrimp. read more

We went to Austin's 3x in our week at the OBX. Probably would've went even more if we hadn't received a (raw) swordfish steak that was rancid. Accidents happen, but it could have been a disaster had my husband not recognized it when he was grilling it. He recommends asking to smell it before they wrap it up. They were very gracious when we informed them and apologized profusely and also doubled our money back. But we thoroughly enjoyed our steamer bucket earlier in the week. It was great that is came with lemon, butter, and (VA) local cocktail sauce that is amazing. (So thankful they didn't skimp on that detail.) The tuna steaks another night we had were excellent. The service is inconsistent especially the elderly lady who barked at me from behind the register when I asked the gal behind the counter if I could place an advance order for crabs and a steamer bucket with a loud and firm "NO ma'am!!"
