My husband and I recently reached out to Austen Plumbing to come out and do a leak detection. We found out from the city that we had a leak of 3/10ths of a gallon per minute. Now I am not a math wiz but that is a whole lotta water! The problem was that we had no idea where the water was going. There was no evidence of water anywhere on our property. Austen came out with his fancy sonar equipment and swept the entire foundation area until he found a leak underneath the bath tub. Not only was there a leak there, but there were several puddles (deep puddles) of water underneath the foundation. He was able to pump the water out of some of them. He was at our house for about 12 hours until the leak was fixed. As first time owners, we were concerned of something like this happening again. We mentioned this concern to him and he mentioned that he guarantees his work for 2 years. Aside from Austen's hard work, skill, and competitive pricing, I really liked the convenience of being able to do the invoice and transaction online. I like that his business keeps up with technology and make it easier for customers to communicate with him. The only downside I saw was that we now have two small cut outs on our wall, about 12" x 12" where he cut the sheet rock to get to the pipes and foundation. He fixed the leak, educated me around residential plumbing, and even followed up 2 days later when my tenant complained her toilet wasn't functioning. We had a pipe bust yesterday during the crazy winter storm, and we called 5-6 plumbers to try to get on a repair list. We expected to have to wait several days with our water turned off. Austen called us back within an hour, asked for details and photos, then told us how to cap the pipe ourselves until he can come fix it!! He spent about 20 minutes on the phone with me, asking for nothing, and declined when I said we'd send money for the consult. We were able to cap the pipe with his instructions and turn our water back on within a few hours of the pipe busting. I recently reached out to Austen to help with a leaking water heater (broken valve) and possible leak detection (huge water bill increase). I called him at 530 on a Monday afternoon and he was at Circle C by 630 DESPITE the terrible Austin rush hour traffic on MOPAC. He quickly replaced the leaking valve on the water heater and took a look at the meter to assess the possible leak. He explained everything that he was doing, what could be causing the problems, and how they could be fixed. After squaring away the leak, he took me to the meter and showed me exactly how to tell if there was a leak and generally what kind it would be based on the behavior of the meter. He also let me know that I could request that the city replace their 20 year old meter and their lines on their side of the meter. The previous owner of the home had nailed through the baseboard into a water pipe behind our master bath toilet and it had been leaking. We noticed it a week ago and unfortunately called a different plumber to come out and fix it - and he charged us an arm and a leg to do it since it was past 5pm. I wish I had known about Austen Plumbing before that expensive experience. Austen explained that it was likely the cause of the high water bill and everything seemed to be good at this point. What struck me about this was his blunt honesty. I was SURE that I would have to fork up for a leak detection and eat the cost of any repairs (not to mention the drywall that is still jacked up in the master bath), but I was pleasantly surprised. Any other plumber would have been happy to charge me the cost of an all day leak detection only to find nothing and move on with an easy pay day. Not Austen. In fact, he explained that most homeowners insurance policies usually cover the cost of the leak detection and that is how he can minimize the cost to the customer. That's right, a plumber minimizing the cost to the customer - let that sink in. Austen was fast, communicative, knowledgeable, and patient - he answered all of my random plumbing questions and explained it in a way that I (who knows nothing about plumbing) could easily understand. On top of that, his fee was WAY lower than what that other plumber charged me for after hours emergency service - and he was there longer and did more work. I will be calling Austen for all of my future plumbing service and recommending him to anyone and everyone who needs any plumbing work. Called on a Wednesday. The owner answered right away. Said he'd be out Friday to assess a possible leak in my slab. I felt reassured that I called the right guy. Especially since he was referred by a friend. No show, no call on Friday. Would not answer my calls or return my messages all weekend or the following Monday. That was about a month ago. Still nothing. It says a lot about a business owner that would treat a referred customer that way. Of course I would never use this company at this point and I had the problem fixed by someone who actually showed up. read more

Set up an appointment for a tub install quote on Wednesday for Friday am with Austin (or Austen?) and no one ever showed. Called the Bastrop number and left a message specifically stating I'd be around for the rest of the day and they could still come out - I know sometimes emergencies happen! I never heard from anyone until I called a twice at 5pm. No answer, but I did receive a text from a different number that said "Can't talk right now... I'm on my way." Guess what- No one ever showed. I tried to call yet again this morning, as Yelp says they are open today. Left a voicemail again attempting to set up another appointment. No answer, no call back. Worst customer service. read more

I'm sad to say I have to give 1 star here. I had Austen come out to took at what I was told was a slab leak. He was really friendly, showed up the first time and was really professional. After the problem was figured out he said he would call my insurance company. Three weeks later and after two weeks of me and my agent calling, not one call was returned. They dropped off the face of the earth. I will now find another company to help me. I hope they can improve as they seemed really professional at first. read more

I couldn't begin to explain how amazing of a job Austen did, but I will try! We recently had Austen out to fix plumbing issues with our bathtub and install a new tub. I knew going into this project that we had a mess on our hands and I was very stressed out and overwhelmed about the situation. To make matters worse the first couple plumbers to make it out to our home to do estimates made me feel like this was going to be a huge project and more of an issue then what was expected. So by the time Austen came out I was even more stressed! Not only was he reassuring that it wasn't that big of a deal he was very transparent about what kind of price point to expect, which ended up being totally reasonable. Austen came out to our house for an estimate after being recommended by a family member. He was extremely nice and spent some time looking at our admittedly terrible old water heater setup that is going to take some additional time to bring up to code. He said he would get back to me with an estimate. That was over a month ago, and he has since ignored 6-7 emails (even ones with RESPONSE NEEDED included in the subject line) and multiple voicemails. I think he maybe realized it was going to be too much work and decided he didn't want to deal with us. I just wish he could have let us know he wasn't going to be available in the first place as we have delayed the process for several weeks waiting for a response and now are right back where we started. Came home after Thanksgiving to hear water running in my floor. I could not see water and called around and found Austen. He came out that day and put my mind at rest. He quickly assessed the situation and laid out a plan to discover where the leak was. He used electronic equipment to find the leak and quickly had my repair under way. I had nightmares of floors being destroyed and my house a wreck during Christmas and Austen was able to reroute the water line with very little damage to my home. We received a water bill indicating we had used an additional 26,000 gallons of water in one month, which was our only clue that we had a massive water leak. I immediately called half a dozen plumbers and when I mentioned we had a slab, most of them either said I would need to call someone else or didn't call me back. Austen, however, answered my call and came the very same day. He was extremely professional and even though it took several days to isolate the leak, because of his diligence and fancy equipment, he did locate it. He then was able to find a work around (the leak was in the slab in the living room area) so we didn't even have to dig up our wood floors. His rates were reasonable, he helped us work with our insurance company, and he was an excellent communicator. I would highly recommend him if you have any kind of leak.
