I bookmarked this place ages ago and finally went for dinner on Saturday night. We reserved a table online and only outdoor seating was available. We arrived on time for our 7pm reservation and were seated immediately since it wasn't too busy, but it got pretty packed as the night went on. Right from the start, this place didn't scream "upscale" to me, except for their prices. The overall dining experience was pretty ordinary. For drinks, we ordered Green with Envy, Tango in Goa, and Pomelo Paani. Our appetizers were Brassica Beats, Gilroy & Punch. For mains, we had Moga, Revive, Rice, Garlic Naan, Laccha Paratha, and finished with Ghevar. The drinks and food were just okay, maybe because I had high expectations. I heard about the chef on the food network in the episode when he beat Bobby Flay. Since then I have been wanting to try the winning spinach and cottage cheese dish. So I did. It's called I'M NOT PASTA - spinach paneer lasagne and it's everything I thought it would be. Additionally we tried SMOKEY - jhalmuri This is a take on the traditional puffed rice mixture. There is some smokiness infused in the jar and the taste is enhanced with mustard oil and I tasted some hint of wasabi peas. A little spicy for me but delicious. MR. POTATO - potato spiral chaat. This is fried potato served with garbanzo beans curry. It's mildly spiced and tastes good. SIVAS - apricot kofta. This has very little sauce but the kofta dumpling just melts in your mouth. Lastly the dessert chocolate rasamalai. It was the Cherry on the top of our meal. It had some chocolate mousse, some dark chocolate and some rasamalai. All in layers. And every bite was delicious. The menu is priced on the higher side. And probably not something most of us would go every day. But for a celebration this is a great place. Highly recommend. read more

This is an upscale restaurant with creative Indian dishes and flavors. Ambience that offer cozy restaurant in downtown and Services, attentive and quick. So the dishes do lack authentic taste, but otherwise this is a must try for anyone looking for high-end Indian food. It has great selection of non-vegetarian as well as vegetarian dishes. The ambience is fantastic. Very welcoming and cheerful. In some ways it made me hungrier(?) I started with a martini and fried okra. The okra was cooked well, was crispy and the spices were just playing with my taste buds in a nice way! Followed it up with chicken biryani, which to me is always a go to dish in an Indian restaurant. Aurum made it better with the flavorful rice and well cooked and succulent chicken pieces. And then finally the jaggery kulfi. I was skeptical when I ordered it, but holy smokes!! It was an icing on the cake I cal 'experience at Aurum'!! Lovely ! I had the opportunity to go to Aurum for a work event and it was an awesome experience. We ordered several appetizers: roasted cauliflower, fried chicken, lamb chops and more. They were all delicious: the chicken literally crackles as you cut bites, but is super juicy, the cauliflower was perfectly cooked, just a little crunch, and the lamb as well as the romanesco cauliflower it comes with were great. Our mains were similarly expansive: chicken biriyani, and "spinach lasagna" were the standouts. Fun story: the "I'm not pasta" dish is the one Chef Manish beat Bobby Flay with, and it's so good. Overall an awesome experience if you are in the area and want delicious, authentic, but still unique Indian food. read more

The ambiance is nice when the restaurant is a bit more full, but we came here on a Sunday night at 6 pm and there were few customers at such a random time. read more

Fancy menu item names and fancy prices don't make food taste good or don't make for an enjoyable experience! We came here for my wife's birthday dinner and thoroughly regretted it. Drinks did not live up to the names and descriptions in the menu. Appetizers were average. The paneer tikka was dry and tough. The Nanak boxed dahi kababs taste better. The only thing above average was the okra masala. Everything tasted like it was prepared hours earlier and reheated. We are foodies and we can tell. This chef beat Bobby Flay! Chef Manish Tyagi's menu features delicious Indian food paired with local California produce. I love the "I'm Not Pasta" (Spinach Paneer Lasagne), which is the winning dish from the show. It has brown garlic, fenugreek leaves, and mozzarella and is really delicious! The "Dum Khumb" (Mushroom Pot Pie) is another favorite and includes chantrelle, shiitake, oyster mushrooms, and lababdar sauce. The sauce is savory and tasty, and it's topped with a flakey crust. When served at your table, your server will mix it up for you. It goes great with some naan for dipping! The Rockstar (Curried Lobster) had nice presentation, but personally, I wasn't really a fan of the flavor. For appetizers, I highly recommend the Cali (Artichoke Chaat). The artichoke was slightly crispy, and the sauces paired perfectly with it! Definitely get this! I enjoyed the Indian take on their Arancini. They had lentils, bell pepper, coulis, and a papaya relish. For desserts, the Toffee Pudding and Ghevar are the way to go! Food overall 3/5 The starters were really below average 1. Spiral Potato Chat - the spiral potato didn't work for me with the ragda and the rest of the dish. Looked pretty but taste was meh. 2. Cali chaat - the fried artichokes were good but again the combination of those with yogurt and chutneys didn't taste right to me. Mains: 1.Raga kofta - the kofta was decent, the gravy was ok. Nothing special to write about. The makhana/fox nuts were almost inedible. Note- the paneer spinach lasagna seemed to be the more popular choice, will try it next time. 1. Roti - no option of plain/butter naan. Roti was good. Desserts - this was the highlight of the dinner. Really well made desserts. 1. Ghevar- ghevar was delicious- light airy yet flavorful. The cream on top was also delicious with flavors of saffron. 2. Chocolate rasmalai - very tasty! The thin layer of chocolate on the rasmalai made the combination come alive. Service 5/5 The server was really patient with us when we asked about some ingredients in the dishes and was able to accommodate a change in one of the dishes. The service overall was very fast, the food kept arriving without a wait time. Ambiance 3/5 The ambiance is good but could have been great. Wanted to try this place for a while as it was recommended from few folks.There is parking near the restaurant but it may be tough to find a spot on busy days for sure. Place is small so might be tricky for larger groups so call and find out before u go. Coming to food: Mr Potato - chips with gravy in it. Nice quality food and unique contemporary combinations. Smokey - Jhalmuri, a Smokey twist to the Kolkata classic. It has a strong Smokey flavor. If you enjoy that you'll love this. Nazam - Dahi Kababs are amazing, very crispy and flavorful, definitely recommend it. Panner Tikka - Interesting dipping chutneys. And very well plated. Not so Pasta - This is brilliant, it's a curry with panner layered with spinach and topped with cheese. Very rich and flavorful. Definitely recommend this. Panner Tikka - it's a classic but well made. Okra Entree - Crispy and super delicious definitely recommend this. Parrota - Nicely made but thick. Garlic Naan - Nicely made and authentic. Most Indian restaurants have a similar, battle tested menu. Aurum breaks the mold by creating a unique list of dishes that you don't necessarily find anywhere else imo in the States. Unfortunately, the flavors are a bit of a mish-mash and don't live up to expectations. Case in point, the Maggi appetizer. The garlic overpowers the noodles rather than complimenting it. Inventing on the menu is courageous and should be commended and I hope Aurum iterates on the feedback and improves the flavors. I'm counting on them. read more

Good and attentive service. Ambiance is questionable, loud and odd arrangement of tables. Food was good, but not great. The Two Good was tasty, but very little actual chicken or mushrooms. We feel that this is the best Indian Michelin star restaurant in the Bay Area. They have brought back their "Cozy" (maggi) menu item. They had discontinued this item previously but it seems they changed their formula a little bit for this. We felt that it was better earlier. It had more burnt garlic kind of feel to it earlier. Now it's a bit more Rameny. The food is always absolutely delicious. We have tried many vegetarian options here over a period of past year. Their famous potato spiral chaat was okay we felt. Among the veggie appetizers, if they bring back their maggi with old formula that would be amazing. Among thei desserts, Ghevar is the best dessert we have tasted in Michelin starred Indian restaurants. Followed by the kulfi and then the chocolate rasmalai. Their service is always nice and always receptive to constructive feedback. They're always pleasant in their service. Chicken kebabs were cooked nicely, tender with just a bit of char on them Lamb shank was huge, definitely a dish for two. Seafood curry was interesting, not spicy enough for me. The bay area has a ton of Indian restaurants and I am usually skeptical when I see another new one. After dinner last night, I see Aurum as a good addition! They have a unique menu and tasty food. It was funny that I could smell the masala from a block away. If you are lost looking for them, just follow the smell. ;-) We sat outside to enjoy the weather and also avoid the cooties...the vid is still a concern though a smaller one these days. Our waiter was super nice and attentive. The panner tikka was good. The only disappointing dish was the ceviche, the salmon tasted very fishy and the sauce it came in was meh. The chicken biryani, kofta, and goat cheese/spinach parata were extremely good. The toffee pudding was a very good ending to the meal. Overall, a solid 4 stars! read more

I had saved this place for a special occasion meal. My expectation from this Indian restaurant was for it to have either a unique twist/interpretation of regular Indian food and/or exceptional flavor which is difficult to find in other places combined with some amazing ambiance and service. It has after all shown up on the Michelin guide. Since we went on a weekday, their office special menu seemed like a reasonable option as we could sample upto 6 dishes between the two of us. First of all the ambiance is mediocre, orange painted walls and some ceiling vents that needed cleaning. We got brassica beats and lasooni kebab for appetizers. The cauliflower bezule were these greasy little bites with a very crispy coating. The sauce it came with was fat heavy as well, it could have helped to have a lighter sauce to avoiding weighing down the combination. The chicken kebab was dangerously tethered between the fine line of being undercooked and beautifully cooked, I felt like it crossed the line into the wrong side in some places. Next came our main dishes: ghee roasted mutton and apricot kofta. The kofta was in a cream heavy curry, I could not distinguish the flavor of the apricots in the kebab, they just felt a tad bit tougher than the regular paneer/potato koftas. The mutton gravy was mild as well. Overall the appetizers and curries felt as if they were safely trying to tick off boxes rather than experimenting. Though it was difficult to find anything obviously wrong in the dishes at the same time it was difficult to fall in love with any of them. Finally we got toffee pudding and tapioca kheer for dessert. The toffee pudding was warm and not overly sweet if the brown sugar syrup was avoided, I liked it. The tapioca pudding on the other hand felt extremely sweet and had copious amount of saffron. If the expectation is to have a decent Indian meal in a relatively nice setting then this is the place for that. My expectations though were different and it failed to live upto them. read more

Table and chairs were were nit comfortable and not fit for this location and restaurant of this caliber. We choose to stay outside due to stlll COVID and nice weather. Started with appetizers Arincini and Mr. Potato, both were underwhelming, small quantity and taste was nothing special, my family commented their potato was little burnt. For the main course we had Raga Kofta and Mushroom Pot Pie and we had olive naan and goat cheese kulcha, all were delish, we needed more bread so we tried garlic naan, overall main course was great. We visited this place to celebrate Father's Day. I had seen images of potato spirals immersed in gravy, and we started our meal with that delightful dish. It offered a unique flavor, combining Channa, mint, and sweet sauce in perfect harmony. We also tried the paneer Methi tikka, which unfortunately fell short in terms of juiciness for a marinated kabab; it turned out a bit dry. However, the brassica beats, featuring crispy cauliflower, were enjoyable. The main courses on the big plates were flavorful, particularly the delicious lotus kofta and the biryani. The most memorable part of our dinner was undoubtedly the dessert--a heavenly "heaven can wait toffee pudding" that left us absolutely delighted. The service of course was very good given that it is a $$$ restaurant. A friend insisted on us meeting at Aurum. The ambience seemed rather lackluster for a fancy place. We tried the jackfruit kofta, paneer tikka sumac and the mushroom pot pie. The pot pie and kofta were very good, but the paneer tikka fell short of expectations. There was no flavor of sumac in the paneer tikka. It also seemed dry and hard to eat. I expected the food to be top notch but it was just good. There are many other $$$ restaurants that give us a much much better experience. Not sure I want to come here again. read more

As I said to Chef Manish last evening, Aurum is a destination. You taste the love in the food -- he always prepares dishes that take you back in time. Our standard order always includes the Jhalmuri, tandoori mango prawns, fire-roasted eggplant and chicken biryani, but last night we also tried the Lahori fish and it immediately transported me to my home town in North India -- the same flavors, the same aroma. The mushroom butter chicken impressed our German friends who are visiting and have been to so many different restaurants in the Bay Area during our stay -- they said "this is the best Indian food, hands down!" And, of course, the ghevar, chocolate rasmalai and toffee pudding are unbeatable! We were stuffed but we kept eating more! Aurum is our go-to for special occasions and friendly get-togethers. When we go here, we know we will be well taken care of and our souls, along with our bellies, will be well-nourished. Tip: avoid sitting outside on Thursdays when the farmer's market is on because it tends to get super noisy and crowded but on all other evenings, the outside dining experience makes the best of the small-town California vibe. read more

Came by for dinner the other night and it was a tasty experience. Made a reservation online and our table was ready upon arrival. Street parking was plentiful in Los Altos. Staff wore masks covering their mouth and nose and some wore a gaiter... Both indoor and heated outdoor dining were available. Indoor dining was definitely on the "cozy" side with minimal spacing between tables... Started off with the La La Lamb and it was quite tasty. The tandoor lamb chops were decent sized, and well presented. Flavoring was on point too. Moved on to the confit butter chicken and it was decent. Some of the meat fell off the bone while other parts of the chicken tasted better with more curry... The garlic naan was fresh and tasty and complemented the curry in the butter chicken perfectly! Ended the meal off with the ghevar which was a slightly sweet and light way to end off the meal. The ghevar was a sweet pastry-like dough topped with a lightly sweetened whipped cream. ~$75/head after tax and gratuity for dinner. read more

My family, friends and I visited Aurum today for dinner and we got seated outdoors. We were a party of 5 adults and 2 kids. My brother and I absolutely loved the food server here. We were pleasantly surprised to have such high quality tasty food in such fancy dining style restaurant in Los Altos. The portions are good and we were satisfied with all our dishes. We ordered Mr Potato for veggie and pepper chicken fry for non veg starters. Really tasty and unique flavours, presentations For entrees we got the Queen(Okra veggie dish), chicken biryani and another chicken curry on the menu. Everything tasted great. We also ordered variety of naan's and everything was so fresh hot and melting soft. The cocktail drinks were refreshing and tasty too. I believe it's pricy but it comes with the location, ambiance, food quality and presentation too. I'd say it's Worth it! Food was presented very nicely. I did find the paneer appetizer and the lamb curry to be bland in flavor. The naan bread that comes with the curry was my favorite part of the whole meal; warm and fluffy. The chicken kabob appetizer was also tasty and juicy. Closing off with a toffee pudding cake for dessert was a nice touch. The $30 lunch special (only Wednesday through Friday) gets you a decent meal at a Michelin. read more

6/8/2022 Aurum 132 State St Los Altos, CA 94022 On our recently started ongoing search in downtown Los Altos, we went for Indian and came here for a late lunch on a warm Wednesday afternoon and sat outside. The menu appears limited; no tandoori or kebabs for example. We both ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala which was curry according to our waiter. We also had the Garlic and Olive & Thyme Naans. Both were good and we preferred the Garlic. Our Chicken was tender and moist in a delicious mildly spicy orange sauce. We were told we could specify the heat level at spicy or very spicy, spicy next time. Service was outstanding. Food was great but pricey. Parking in Los Altos is a breeze. A great upscale dining experience! After being on our bookmarks for a long time, we finally went to Aurum. We reserved a table a day before and chose to sit outside. We were seated promptly and they had heaters set up for every table. It was great! For food we got these: ~ Mr. Potato: A yummy potato chaat. It was perfectly crisp and served with yogurt and chutney on top. ~ Fayro: Paneer Kebab that were well marinated, grilled and served with chutney. This is a MUST-ORDER for sure. ~ Garden: Aloo Mutter Kofta in a green sauce. This was good with naan. Would order again. ~ Garlic Naan, Olive and Thyme Naan: Both were SO good. The kids loved the garlic naan as it had LOTS of butter and tasted amazing. All the food was great and served fashionably. The taste was great and the portion size was as expected from a fine dine restaurant. The servers were friendly, gave attention to detail and helped accommodate any request. We were here for a family dinner on a Memorial day evening. This is our first time here. The service is good, we loved the appetizers mainly and different types of naan.
