I went to see, Me n U and Forester here last night. It was general admission. Got a stamp for being 21+ on my right wrist and a stamp for verifying my ticket on the left wrist. Then went through the metal detector. It was fast and efficient. They closed off the top level and only opened the floor area. There's a bar on the right side as you enter the floor. They offered complimentary cold water and cups. Next to it was the bathroom. If you go over to the left side appears to be the VIP area but only half of it was roped off. So we mostly hung out on the other half which had a great view over everyone's heads and there was room to dance. There was also a small seating area here too. The only issue we had was once in a while we can smell the bathroom which wasn't pleasant. When we left the venue, the staffs said, "good night" which was nice. read more

Have been to this venue for two shows now and its not bad! The only issue I have is can get a little tight with multiple artist having their merch stands all over the entry. The second show I did had them all in a second floor bar room which was a much better setup but it did get pretty tight in there as well. However for the same reason that it can get a little tight, you also are always close to the show! They have a top balcony area that seems to be always full, but if you can get up there its a great view! Also has a bar on both floors and the drinks weren't terribly priced. All the employees as well as security have always been nice and professional. I will definitely continue to go to shows here! read more

I'll start with the positive: aesthetically pleasing and clean venue. Bartenders attentive and reasonably pleasant. GM Scott- I noted your replies to other negative comments and hopefully you see this, because someone needs to tell you: one of the folks you have hired to do security at your venue is acting hateful and rude to your customers. Might remind you that a music venue falls unit he hospitality industry, and a modicum of decency is expected even from security staff? I have been seeing live music since the 90s in venues across the nation, and your security staff- specifically the African American woman at the door- is just profoundly and unnecessarily rude, aggressive and plain old mean. The hate is literally dripping from her voice. It's in VERY fine print on your webpage and a few clicks in that gum is not allowed. This is not a typical rule, but I see the rationale for this. Many people are going to show up accidentally carrying a "forbidden" item, as your list of forbidden items is very comprehensive! Why not let people leave forbidden items in a basket at the door and collect them on the way out? I have never had someone go through my bag, angrily snatch my personal property, aggressively throw it in the trash, then verbally abuse me over a PACK OF GUM. Totally uncalled for way to treat your patrons, and makes it a hard sell for me to ever want to visit your venue again. Tell security to settle down- enforcing a rule is fine, but being abusive and hateful to the people spending money in your business is unacceptable. As people were exiting the show, this same security worker was saying very loudly "Get out!"- and not to be the tone police, but it was said in a way that was just so obviously hostile towards people who were behaving perfectly, following the rules, and just trying to have a nice evening it's bafflingly bad behavior to be tolerating in a entertainment venue. Being a security worker doesn't entitle you to verbally abuse customers. It's a bad vibe and takes away from an otherwise enjoyable experience. read more

I love this venue! I've gone to a good number of shows here (Sinead Harnett, Jenevieve to name a few) and thought it was a very spacious venue, however can get p crowded so get there early! ADA Seating: Be sure to email in advance and provide the number of people in your party. Note that there is limited bench seating + foldable chairs towards the front corners of the stage. The line to get in can be long, so dress warm and get there early enough to wait in line! read more

Location: Located not that far away from Union Square with ample parking options throughout. Also great shopping and food options for before and after the event. Traffic can be an issue coming in but once you are parked it is relatively chill. Parking garage at Union Square has charging options!. Ambiance: Love this venue set up with the stage and standing room on the lower level. It's low key pretty quiet with drinking options up top and merchandise set on the lower level. Lighting had a great vibe for this show. I don't recall any food options but did get a couple of drinks. Venue is on the smaller side. Staff at check in was great and I didn't see any issues with any of the staff for drinks. Nothing memorable means a good thing! Saw Loveless and Honey Revenge a while back at this venue and it was a great experience. If your favorite band is here go ahead and see them!!! read more

Watched a concert here for the first time on a Sunday night and I had a blast! There was street parking down the street from the venue and luckily since it was a Sunday the meters weren't being enforced! (free parking) When we entered it was clear that there was an upstairs and down stairs. Bar and restroom both upstairs and downstairs was a plus. We didn't have to wait in a long line for either. For two mixed drinks it was about $40 together. One thing I didn't realize was there there wasn't any seating really. If you sat upstairs it was cushions along the walls but people stand against the railing and anything behind that you really could not see. As for downstairs there was a ADA section on the left side of the room and there were a bit of chairs and cushions against the wall also but very similar because everyone has to stand it makes it very difficult to see. I was able to move my way up to see the performer at the downstairs standing room section which was great! I had a perfect view so be sure to find the pockets where you can fit in. Also we tried the Photo Booth up stairs for $5 but our pictures never printed and a few other people had the same issue so make sure to ask if it works before you pay! read more

I visited August Hall recently for a Saturday night concert. Overall, this is a nice venue. I appreciated the seating upstairs - it was nice to escape the crowd. It's also the cleanest concert venue I've every visited! I observed staff regularly cleaning throughout the night. What kind of concert venue doesn't have sticky floors? This one!!! The bathrooms were also super clean. Very impressive. My only qualm is that they are very strict about what is allowed inside. I had a small packaged snack in my purse - not allowed! Security also confiscated my gum (even though I saw staff chewing gum). Good to know before attending another show here. read more

My family and I just saw a show at August Hall, and honestly, this venue really blew us away. My good experience with August Hall actually kicked off several weeks before the show. I was so excited to see my son's favorite singer was coming somewhat close to us, but when I saw the ticket page said "GA, standing room," I was worried we'd have to skip it. But I reached out to their box office about needing some accessibility accommodations for seating, and the staff answering emails (big shout-out to Melissa!) were super helpful in getting it all sorted. When we finally got there and checked in at the box office, the kind service I'd gotten via email just kept going. There was a tiny mix-up with how many folks were in our group for the special seating, but they quickly and happily helped us get it straight. Then, they walked us to our seats and gave us a quick rundown of the space. Throughout the night, staff even checked in on us a few times to make sure we were having a good time. As someone who's pretty new to having mobility issues and still learning to be comfortable asking for help, experiencing that kind of kindness and care was not just really appreciated, it actually meant a lot to me. The venue itself is just a great spot for a show! The band sounded awesome, and the line of sight was surprisingly great - even seated on the side in our designated area, I had no trouble seeing the stage, even with the floor totally packed with standing people. I also took my son up to the balcony for a bit, and the views up there were really good too. Service at the bar was quick and friendly, and I thought the prices were pretty reasonable for what you usually pay at places like this. And get this: the bathrooms were even quite clean (at a music club, no less!). I'd happily go back to August Hall anytime for another show. I'm truly so grateful to everyone there for making it possible for my family and I to have such a great evening together. read more

Went here in mid January for an Amber Liu concert, previous member of legendary KPOP group f(x), Asian-American singer that is very popular in China and the Far East, current soloist who performs in Korean, Mandarin, and English. Her SF show was entirely English. August Hall, previously known as Ruby Sky, is a smaller intimate music and dance hall with two public areas viewing the stage. First floor is primarily the dance floor and second is more like a quieter viewing area of the action or concert below. The second floor was closed for Amber's concert. Patrons go thru security to enter the facility and are checked and wrist-banded for alcoholic drinks if desired. The venue has good acoustics and the elevated stage is visible from the entire dance floor. There's a small seating area on the left side of the first floor. Bar is opposite of the stage. We had a very good time at the concert and felt safe and secure for the entire performance. Street parking can be a challenge but doable, just don't leave any valuables in the car. The Union Square parking lot is also a few blocks away. read more

Went to August Hall for the first time last week to see IDK HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME in a sold out concert. Had a blast! The venue is a 5-10 minute walk from the Union Square Parking Garage. They stamped our wrists and checked our bags as we went in. There's a bar located on the first floor and another on the second floor. This particular concert was all GA, so first come, first served on both floors. I found a spot on the balcony near the stage and had a great view for the whole concert. There were also free water stations! (Stay hydrated!) The venue is pretty intimate compared to other concert venues I've been to, but I think it makes for a more fun experience since you're closer to the performers. It was my first time seeing IDKHOW live and they were amazing! Ended up buying merch too. Will definitely be seeing them again next time they tour! read more

Guilty, I wasn't super thrilled to check out August Hall, purely based on location but to my surprise, this has been one of my favorite venues in the city! Tokyo Police Club announced their final tour and I had to fulfill my middle school dreams. I typically don't care to watch an opener and show up a few minutes before the main show but Born Ruffians was a must. Conveniently located next to bart and a few bus stops, so plenty of public transit opportunities. There was a little line to get in but moved very quickly. Ticket and bag check was a breeze. The venue is small but spacious, has lovely architecture (fun fact! this used to be a movie theater), and the air conditioning in here was lovely. This was my first solo show and it was perfect for that! Crowd control was so great. Drink lines were not long (shout out for reusable cups). I even took a bathroom break during the show and managed to make my way back to my spot, how is that even possible! The sound in here could have been better but that wouldn't stop me from coming back. I gotta check out the second floor next time. read more

Sound is great, size is great, programming is great, staff are great... So why is the lighting awful? I've been to multiple shows here where the lighting feels like I'm a department store or an awkward high school prom/talent show. Why am I able to see the details of every air vent on the multi level ceiling in the middle of Nilüfer Yanya? Why am I able to discern the color of every piece of clothing of the person in front of me during serpentwithfeet? Is it because someone in management felt it was a bigger priority to show off every mosaic, carving, and cranny of detail in this hall than create an ambiance that actually makes you focus on the musicians? It honestly feels like somebody left house lights on by mistake but it's been too many shows now to where it can't be an accident. The result is an audience that isn't able to fully focus and enjoy the music in front of them as they're distracted by that one guy head banging to the totally wrong beat in the front row or that other person who is doing tons of trips back and forth from their spot to the bar or they feel uncomfortable and aware of their body movements and less inclined to dance. The artist must feel the same way! During the show tonight if you looked up, you could see certain color lights on stage and above the audience moving to accent the songs, but their choreography was for naught as it wasn't felt or seen at all because there was so much other light drowning those ones out and making the space so unfortunately bright. This venue is terrible, smells like weed. Their policy is ridiculous - they say that you can check in and step inside and then you can go out and come back in. But they lie, they don't actually let you step out and come back in. The guy at the door and the person who claims to be the self proclaimed general manager "Josh" is extremely rude. Seemed outright racist and also intimidating, considering how he was talking to me. This is how they treat their guests, people of color anyway. They lie and they tell you that's how things are. I didn't have my physical ID on me but had the ticket and digital copy of an ID. Their argument was that they if they let me out with a reentry wrist band, I may get alcoholic drink outside and that's violation of CA laws. I could've gotten a drink before I entered the first time, they don't and can't check what you do before entering the venue. Just making stuff up, to get a power trip. He told me that "this" (meaning lying) is their policy and if I have issue with that, I am welcome to leave the venue read more

Neat smaller venue that's been getting some great acts lately. The capacity, in my estimation, would be just shy of 1000. For those familar with venue sizes, it is probably very close to Ace of Spades in Sac. We saw Cannons at August Hall on Memorial Day 2024 and since the show was sold out, we stuck to the back of the hall, close to the bar. There is some limited seating on the side of the main floor, but those spots must have been taken very early on. However, since the venue is so intimate, there is no bad spot in the house. Also, the balcony offers some birds eye view for those that like that better. On the opposite side of where we were standing, I saw the food sign and there were some other guests walking around with pizza, so I'd guess that's what they have to eat. Sound system seems crisp and clear, with no distortitons or too heavy on the bass as with a lot of venues. The only two little complaints i had are the overwhelming smell of Fabuloso lavaner (which can be waay too much), and the drink prices ($15 for a beer). Relatively close to Union Square and parking garages, this makes August Hall one of the better spots to see a show in SF. Needles to say, we'll be back...as long as they keep their part and keep on booking great acts. read more

Saw Matt and Kim here a while back. We showed up only 15 minutes before showtime so there wasn't a line to get in. We stood at the top balcony level and had a great view of everything. The energy on the first floor by the front would have been fun but I wouldn't have been able to see much because of taller people. Matt and Kim even came up to the second level briefly. Sound level was very very loud, so bring your attenuated ear plugs or regular ear plugs if you want to save your hearing for old age. Merch line was short. read more

This place is such a cool venue. Small-ish space with good sound for concerts and lots of spots to easily be able To see performers on stage. However, I have now been to two shows now and I don't think I'll ever be able to go back because the smell of cleaning product (I think fabuloso) is so strong that it's nauseating. I think switching cleaning product would make a huge difference. Also bring a coat when you come here--the AC is usually on full blast AND if you choose to stand in one of the furthest stage left or right areas, the lights stay pretty bright the entire show. read more

Most the staff is nice but the security could use some work. I went to a show tonight and they checked my sling and grabbed my gab and immediately threw it away without saying anything to me. I get it, gum is not allowed (I didn't know that) but staff should really communicate before they throw people's stuff in the garbage. The security was very unfriendly about it. I get we want to get people and the venue safe but plenty of other venues have a better attitude about it. It can create a sour mood before you even get inside. read more

I have been seeing live music for 20yr and this is the WORST venue I've ever been to. I have now been here twice and the staff is just so damn unpleasant! So first bad experience there was a girl it was obvious she had a bit to drink but they have several bars in the venue so that is to be expected. She was dancing having a good time not being overly rowdy and the bouncers kicked her out!!! I watched it all go down and she did NOTHING but dance I had been watching her (not in a creepy way she was enjoying herself and hard to miss). It was the WAY the bouncer grabbed her by the arm that was concerning, too! The set was over and I was trying to get the staff to give me the set list but they ignored me so I went around the barrier and they kicked me out. Mind you everyone was off stage and I asked nicely first. They said the band personally had to give it to me (bands don't/rarely do that). Bear in mind that stage divers were welcomed on the other side of the barrier without getting kicked out. This left a bad taste in my mouth. So second show they took my pack of gum and accused me of trying to bring in alcohol. Instant bad vibes. There's a blocked off portion for staff upstairs I was standing close by for a good view with plenty of room from their walk way and not a ton of people were up there... multiple members of staff kept bumping into me pretty hard in a rude way like they were either drunk or just did not care. So then I was standing next to this girl at the front of the stage and she kept politely asking for the setlist. All the staff was outright purposely ignoring her pretending not to hear. Finally a staff member heard her, walked straight up to the setlist, grabbed it, looked her straight in the face, smiled and walked away. I thought he was going to walk around the stage and hand it to her but he ended up back up at the top balcony staff area. She seen him from below with the setlist and gave him the praying hands asking for the setlist again and he literally crumpled it up and threw it at her!!!! Disgusting behavior! I was confused on who was headlining the show and missed the first act so I thought there was another band coming on and kept standing by the stage and a staff member came up to me and told me to leave. I still had a drink in my hand. I also felt weird vibes from the bathroom staff. There was a woman in there CONTANTLY mopping. I appreciate clean facilities but her constant presence was uncomfortable while trying to use the restroom and freshen up. It was more like she was trying to catch someone doing something than actually cleaning. It's also crazy that they block off all the street parking in front of the venue (the whole block, actually) even if there are no tour busses or people loading out front. Just bad bad pretentious vibes all around. This beautiful theater has SO much potential but honestly I'll have a hard time coming back. I tried to call to speak to someone about my concerns in hopes of a better experience moving forward but the line just rings off the hook. read more

This used to be a favorite venue of mine, but last night they broke my heart. As I was going through bag check, their security person took a piece of my property out of my handbag and threw it into a trash bin while saying, "sharpies aren't allowed." I know this sounds silly, but this particular sharpie was actually very special to me. It was my "lucky" sharpie - my favorite artists have used it to sign things for me after shows for many years - I only use it for that sole purpose. If security had given me the opportunity to put it back in my car before they trashed it, I would have done so, because it's important to me. Even though it was only a sharpie, they shouldn't trash a person's property w/out giving the option to re-enter without it. Even TSA asks people if they want to finish a bottled water before they toss it. It's common courtesy, which clearly doesn't exist at August Hall. As I walked away from the bag check, a staff saw me upset, so I explained. She didn't apologize, just said I could go through their trash if I wanted to look for it and take it to my car. Despite being heartbroken, I opted not to dig through a bin of discarded food, snotty kleenex and wet garbage. To be honest, I didn't want it after it had been in that garbage anyway. August Hall has a long list of prohibited items, do they toss selfie sticks in the trash? Strollers? Skateboards? Drones? I'm pretty sure they don't, because they'd catch hell if they did. Just because my property was "disposable" doesn't give them the right to trash it and THEN tell me it's not allowed inside. read more

Very friendly staff for the kid's concert we attended. The place has tons of space so everyone could enjoy the show. It was clean and well kept. The venue is in a safe neighborhood and their is parking with security located directly across the street. I would recommend this place in the future to other fams looking for a fun time. read more

Came here to see BandMaid perform live back in October 2022. I was really happy with this venue! I missed being in intimate rock concert environments, and standing close to the stage when BandMaid was playing was so great! This is a very lovely venue too that makes me remember why I love attending rock and metal concerts so much. It's walkable from Bart too. read more

The venue capacity is a little under 1000 people, but there is a beautiful 32-foot ceiling and 100-year architecture. I particularly like smaller venues since you can get up close to the artists during the show. The good: This place is really pretty. It's also, as far as I know, the only rock music venue in Union Square (as the area around Warfield becomes Tenderloin.) The place is clean, modern and nice, with cool artwork (a tastefully gaudy balcony and stained glass on the walls), and it's the perfect size to get some cool acts without getting overcrowded. The staff has always been super nice and sweet each time I've been here. The...not quite bad, but maybe shrugworthy: The lighting is always the same shade of blueish purple (or purplish blue). It was cool looking at first although there was a period where I happened to go to a few concerts in a row and the lighting got a little monotonous. YMMV. Also, there are some pillars near the back center that get in the way of seeing the stage if you are unfortunate to get stuck in that area. The ugly: $12 beers + tax and service charge (making the grand total $13.78) if you pay with a credit card. They used to be $9 on the other side of 2021. I know, inflation but $13.78 for a pint is excessive. At least they do always have a Fieldwork IPA on tap, but this price has sadly made me just stop buying drinks here and pre-game or after-game instead. read more

We finally had our first visit to August Hall and were very impressed. The first interaction was queuing to get in. A group of four more-or-less cut us off. It was not a big deal, but one of the security people stepped in to point out their indiscretion. We indicated it was all good, but were very impressed with the courtesy of the staff. The venue is lovely and all the vintage details have lovingly been restored. We wondered around and took everything in. The staff inside were very courteous and friendly. The bathrooms were immaculate. We opted to watch the show from the balcony, and there was great viewing from all around. The Sound was very good as well as the lighting. I would heartily recommend this venue if someone you want to see is playing there! read more

I was positively blown away by this venue!!! The staff were all very professional and friendly. The sound was luscious. The venue is pretty and clean. Free water was on offer and canned water as well for a very reasonable price. You can also bring an empty reusable water bottle with you (but no food). The operations were smooth and orderly. Overall, very well run and managed. Excellent venue. The bougie truth of it is that I mostly go to the symphony and opera these days but in my youth I went to a lot of pop/rock clubs. What I remember about those clubs is that they were seedy and dirty, back in my day. I can work around that when I go by myself but I wouldn't want to bring my kids into that atmosphere, usually reeking of bleach and beer on a good day, sticky benches/seats, missing toilet stall dividers, and all that. So when I saw that there was an amazing artist who my middle school kids would love to see coming to August Hall, I sort of braced myself when I bought tickets for us to the all ages show. I figured it was going to be like the pop/rock clubs of my youth. August Hall turned out to be a shining example of how well these venues could be run! Sending huge thanks to the many staff people who made our night amazing! The sweet guy who saw my kids' enthusiasm and invited them to the meet & greet. So grateful to you! The security guard who kindly picked up something dropped in front of the stage and handed it to my kids. The meet & greet manager who gave my kids a set list from the concert. You all made our night one that we will never forget. As far as the neighborhood, when I was single and childfree I lived in the Tenderloin so I arrived fully prepared for the mayhem of the Tenderloin just in case. However, it is much more of a Union Square feel here. There are several well lit parking garages nearby, the lights are bright, and the streets are clean. There was a short line on the sidewalk to get into the show. There were several security guards outside of the venue as well. Overall, highly recommend to everyone! read more

TL;DR - Beautiful venue, no reception I remember when August Hall used to be Ruby Skye... It was a fantastic venue then too to watch/party with EDM artists. Now, August Hall typically plays rock/alternative and I love that. I recently saw the band WET there! I love the spacious venue. I had no reception in there though - maybe its T-mobile? Also, if you are a corporate company - you can rent out August Hall to host parties or trainings. I did that for my tech company before. Also I ordered a "double" for a drink and was disappointed as hell, NOT worth the extra pricing. read more
