I've been frequenting Atwater's at Belvedere Market since the weather turned cold and I've been craving hearty soups, the soup and sandwich selection changes several times per week and the daily menu is available to view on their site mid-morning. The interior of Belvedere Market has undergone a sort of redesign very recently, and Atwater's now has two counter areas where you can sit: along the bakery area where fresh coffee, pastries and sweets are available, and the Ploughboy Soups counter that is unchanged. Add this to all of the independent tables scattered about and there are plenty of spots to relax and enjoy whatever you're craving. Around noon the lunch crowd descends, be forewarned. What draws me back to Atwater's a few times per week are their new coffee offerings, as they've recently added pour over coffee to their menu, and a shiny new La Marzocco espresso machine to boot. I pick up their fresh whole bean Counter Culture selection for home as well. Oh, and the cheddar biscuit is my guilty pleasure. read more

Really good coffee bar inside a multi-store center. I don't really know how to describe it: it's a big place with a coffee area, grocery area, juice area, and some other counters. Atwater serves Counter Culture Coffee made correctly. They make a great cup and they have for-here mugs. Their latte art is on point, their espresso is solid as is their pour overs, and this is a pretty high end establishment. They also carry a variety of scones and baked goods. In this area, Atwater is clearly the best coffee shop. It's top tier, best you can get type of coffee. Parking might be a hassle because while they have an off-street lot, when I was there most of the market was closed and yet there was only one slot left for parking, which I took. Seating, I should mention, is at tables along the front windows or in the back of the space, which is somewhat dark. Whether you sit in the light or dark, it's not bad. But it can be cold in the winter! When I was there, I wanted to wear my jacket inside and I left quickly because i was so cold. Atwater's was a favorite lunch spot when I was in college up the road at Loyola, and after a recent visit I can confidently say it never disappoints. The seating is very casual, but seconds after sitting down we were greeted by a waitress with menus. Deciding what to order was the longest part of our meal, because everything sounds delicious. Luckily, they offer cups of soup and half sandwiches, so I got to try multiple dishes. The soup, some sort of shrimp hominy, was hearty and filling. Served with a slice of crusty baked bread for dipping, I eagerly devoured every drop. I also fell in love with my vegetarian rueben, made filling with sweet roasted butternut squash. My friend and I lamented the fact that there's nothing quite as good as Atwater's near us in Philly... so we'll keep coming back for lunch when we can! read more

That chicken salad omgggg! I love this little place. The chicken salad is sooooo good! I had the kale salad with granola, pumpkin seeds, and lemon buttermilk dressing...I've never had granola on a salad but they made me so happy that I tried it! It was so good! I had a glass of rose which was pleasing as well. The only complaint I have was the $4 side salad which consisted of a plate of leaves , dressing, and seeds. Take that off the menu then they will be all set! Eventually I'll try their soups. I love watching them plate them. Apparently their menu changes because I saw different soups my second visit. I rarely go to Atwater's for lunch. Their food (and root beer) are fantastic, but honestly, I just stop by to grab their bread or milk. Their breads are probably the best I've ever brought home, and I usually stop at Atwater's the night before Christmas or Thanksgiving, and serve their bread with holiday meals. There is ample parking here, which in the Baltimore area can be few and far between. It's located in a market area, very interesting products, some specialty items that you don't come across often. I had a turkey sandwich on cheddar with spicy coleslaw on top. I felt that it came out quickly and our server was pleasant. We ate at the counter so we never had to wait for her to come around again and fill our water back up. My friend had a chicken salad sandwich and soup. How have I not review this place yet? I have been coming here for years and when I say years, I mean well before anyone knew what this place is. The Belvedere location is just another great location of Atwaters. They have great local, and healthy foods which never disappoint. Their chicken salad is always a favorite but I love their soups. You can never go wrong with anything that you get here and I also like that they sell their items to go. They have a small case to the side filled with chicken salad, prepackaged salads, potato salads and other foods. I used to work in the area and I would get food here once per week. Using local ingredients, changing the menus daily and seasonally shows you how fresh and up to date this place is with what their customers want. Not kidding, if you close your eyes and ask for a cup of whatever soup is listed first on the menu, you will NOT be disappointed. Visited Atwater's yesterday. I was at Belvedere market a couple of weeks ago and after browsing the menu, wished I'd eaten at Atwater's instead of the place I had my lunch date. -Set up: you sit anywhere in the market area, but preferably close to Atwater's if you want to have responsive table service. Once you wander a bit too far, it's hard for the staff to keep track of you. -Service: There seemed to be a shift change midway through our lunch..or maybe our original waitress went on her break. Either way, the change over was seamless. Both waitresses were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items. The one "mess up" was the fact that we'd already told our waitresses that we were only having water to drink, we reviewed the extensive (more extensive than expected) drink side of the menu. We wanted to try lattes...after we received our food, we didn't see our waitress until we finished eating. Wished she'd come back for that "how's your food" check-in that waiters usually do...we would've taken advantage and made the drink order. -What I ate: 1. I had the gumbo which came with a baguette. It had a nice flavor to it...spiced nicely, good consistency. I especially liked breaking up pieces of the baguette into the gumbo to soak up some of that broth. 2. Pulled pork with apple/sauerkraut, and melted cheese on a cheddar biscuit. Now THIS...THIS was good! The pork was nice and tender! I could tell that they know their way around their breads. That biscuit was so nice, airy, had a slight crunchy "shell," and I could actually detect the cheddar cheese that was baked into it. I wished that the brunch menu was a little more extensive in terms of options. Many of the items were very similar in terms of what was offered...there were minor swap outs or additions that led to the price differences between them. All in all, I'm glad that I finally made it to Atwater's...The food was great, vibe was nice and casual even though the food offered is gourmet (a lot of places like that are pretentious), food was yummy, and it's a great date spot. read more

So a rep from @atwatersfood reached out to me to review some of their food items. They gave me $20 to try whatever I wanted, and I can could be honest with my review! So of course I said yes! I used the $20 for my food, but I came out of pocket for my dessert. Anyway, I'm totally in love with their Mardi Gras inspired king cake! I bought it thinking it was going to be dry and flavorless, but it had an excellent texture and the flavor was on point. I actually ate the whole thing lol! I highly recommend you guys try it! Also my aunt put me on to their "Bright & Sunny" lemon cake bites, which are good too! For food I tried their new Grilled Corned Beef Reuben, and their Shrimp Coconut Curry soup. Honestly, their reuben can use a little work. They said it's supposed to be grilled but if you look at my cheese wasn't even melted. I was expecting a higher quality corn beef too, but it wasn't bad. Personally I like my thousand island dressing to be a little sweeter than what came on the sandwich. A sweeter dressing helps balance the strong flavors of the sauerkraut and swiss cheese. Overall, it's not a bad sandwich, but with a little more work they can make it a great sandwich. I really enjoyed the Shrimp Coconut Curry soup though! It has very mild curry flavor so it should appeal to most people's taste buds. The shrimp were a little soft in it, but that didn't bother me much. I recommend you guys check out! Last but not least I got their iced Matcha Latte. It was good, but it definitely needed some sugar lol. My first time at Atwaters gave me mixed feelings. We had the sweet potato pie and the biscuits and gravy. The pie was delicious! It was hard to decide which dessert to get as they all looked great. The sweet potato pie had a great balance of flavors. Cinnamon wasn't too strong and the pie crust was nicely baked which was a good contrast to the pie filling. The biscuits and gravy were just okay. Biscuit was okay, good texture and didn't get soggy which was nice. The gravy was pretty thick but not in the good way. It feels like they added too much flour/starch in it. The flavor were both were pretty bland as well. We also got pecan pie samples and those were great!! So maybe time to stick to their desserts? read more

The vendor that sold me the bad asparagus apologized profusely. He offered me a fresh squeezed orange juice and spoke to his staff right in front of me. I am pleased as to the outcome and will purchase here again. This time tried the monster finger cookies and despite the green teeth for about fifteen minutes, I loved the coffee and the huge array of baked goods. I got the vegan version of the num pang sandwich (just hold the mayo) and it was very disappointing. First, the construction of the sandwich was thoughtless. There was a giant bulb of flavorless cauliflower in the middle that all fell out upon first bite. Why not just slice it thinly...? Have they ever heard of salt? The bread was soggy because it wasn't toasted. (IMO the bread they use isn't right for the sandwich at all.) They did have some sauce but it was terribly bland. The only part I liked was the pickle on the side. Not sure where they get off charging so much for this mess of a sandwich. read more

Instead of writing a review, I'll share an email I sent to Atwater's for which I have not received a response: We gave up on the Kenilworth location many months ago. The service was just so wildly inconsistent. More than once, we walked into Kenilworth, were seated, and then walked out 10-15 minutes later after no one approached us. We thought Belvedere was the answer! Last weekend, our breakfast took 40 minutes to arrive. It was insanity. The servers were offering everyone free lemon cake as an apology. We thought it was a fluke and returned yesterday. Breakfast took at least 30 minutes to arrive. Our server never checked on us after taking our order. Literally never. We flagged her down for refills. I requested my eggs, "over hard, very well down" and asked to sub out the toast for fruit. Thirty minutes later one of eggs was runny, I was missing potatoes, and my side of fruit was an orange slice and maybe 6 grapes. It was a sad display. We finished eating and waited. She never acknowledged us. We went to the register to pay. Here's the thing: it's not cheap. I am happy to pay the higher prices because I believe Atwater's uses quality ingredients. But when I pay more for a sloppy, late meal, it makes me feel like a fool. read more

Atwater's is such a mess. This is a review born out of MANY visits to this place and finally throwing up my hands, saying, "That's it! I'm done!" To start, the food is really not that good. The soups usually fairly bland. Their sandwiches always sound interesting, but when you get them, the flavor is often strange and mismatched for the ingredients; Different for the sake of being different, not for the sake of good flavor. I think the heart of the problem is their constantly changing menu. They never keep anything around long enough to develop standout dishes. A lot of my favorite restaurants have at least one specific item on the menu that keeps bringing me back, but nothing here stays around long enough to do that. Also, this place always seems to be touted for vegetarian/vegan "options." I'm a vegetarian, and people saying this makes me seriously doubt the palettes of other vegetarians. The biggest problem though, is that no one working here EVER knows what is going on. At least not as a whole. Quite a few times after I order, I'll have a server come back and tell me they're out. There have been one or two occasions where I get a soup brought to me that wasn't what I ordered, only to hear, "Oh, did you order [my order]? We're out of that." Then I have to wait, AGAIN, for new food. The last straw was when I ordered huevos rancheros, they're brought to me sans beans. When I flag down the first server who will acknowledge me (and as usual, it takes a while) and say that it was supposed to come with beans, he says "Your server didn't tell you we're out of the beans?" I almost never send food back, but paying full price for cowboy eggs minus the cowboy is not something I'll do. So Atwater's gets one star for consistently bland food and for consistently screwing up the most basic functions. I can go to so many places that get these things right ALL THE TIME. I go to Atwater's at least twice a week, so I suppose I'm a regular. I'd like to give it more stars, as I've never had any soup, salad, or sandwich there that I did not like, but the service is so spotty. A few of the servers know me and are always attentive and efficient. But sadly, they are in the minority. The rest of the servers are hipster wannabe teenagers who roll their eyes at you when you ask them for a refill on your water or coffee. I've been told that all the employees split the tips at the end of the day, so perhaps they don't feel particularly motivated by customer service. It is not uncommon to sit at a table for 5-10 minutes before a server even notices you or brings you a menu. Yesterday my server gave me a death glare when I asked her for half and half for my coffee, and I had to ask three times to get a glass of ice water. The food being fresh, made in house, and mostly local makes it usually worth the less than stellar service. I am addicted to their iced coffee and they make a mean latte. Prices are higher than your typical soup and sandwich joint, but I think it's worth it to have locally sourced and high quality ingredients. It makes a big difference in the flavor of everything they serve. You can buy breads, soups, a few salads, cheeses, bacon, eggs, and dairy products to take home. I usually don't like sandwich / soup places, especially chain ones like Panera Bread, because they're all unoriginal, fatty, and bland tasting. Atwater's has completely changed my view on sandwiches. Their sandwiches are so full of flavor, so incredibly fresh, and stuffed with goodness. You can tell they put their best effort into making each and every sandwich. The soups are pretty good, too. Their menu boasts some of the most delicious and original sandwiches around, and changes almost every day. Every ingredient they use is of high quality, and it's all local. Right now, they have the pork / tofu banh mi on their menu. I've been looking everywhere in Baltimore for a good vietnamese banh mi. Atwater's put their own twist on it, and I actually like their version better than the viet ones I've had. Oh, and the fact that it's connected to my all time favorite wine bar, Grand Cru, is another plus. You can order whatever you want in Atwater's, and bring it over to Grand Cru and have some wine. Outside of Red Emma's, I havent found a local, independent business that can quite match the taste of what I'm looking for, and Atwaters was able to execute flawlessly. Also came in on a day where they had their amazing apple pie on sale and was able to snatch that up to make my trip complete. The chef must be sixteen years old, because fifteen year olds at Taco Bell could assemble a better meal. Shouldn't people salt a soup or at least add seasoning? The sandwiches were burnt. Perhaps that's why it takes twenty minutes to bring one out. I would recommend turning the toaster a notch down from charcoal black. I think the "salad" on my plate was stolen lettuce from my rabbit's cage. And the pot pies...well let's not even start. Overall, Atwater's is trying to act like a big fish in a small pond, but you are better off getting you sandwich, salad, or pie at another spot in the market, where it is guaranteed to taste better. read more

The service is consistently horrible. I am not giving them 1 star only because the food is so good and it is a great atmosphere. I really want to love this place and I give them chance after chance, but the service is just so bad. To start, it's confusing whether you are supposed to order at the counter or sit down and wait to be served. Once seated, someone may or may not greet you within 10 min. The people who serve dine-in patrons are the same ones that work the counter, and so they are often preoccupied with the people in line. On multiple occasions, someone has come and given me a menu, I order a drink, I never see them again and so I go up to the counter to order. I rarely get all that I order (for example if I order a side of their quinoa salad or a muffin to go with my breakfast, chances are I'll have to remind them). And forget it if you need something after your food is ordered. Finally, the staff is generally just unfriendly. read more

You can really tell about a place by how it handles problems, more so then how it handles good things. And so it is true with that Atater's. The coffee is it's wonderful as well as socially conscious: they use Counter Culture, a company you look in to. The Baristas are very skilled, and will do any coffees as a pour-over for you as well as make you any espresso drink you want. I make Turkish coffee, for those of you who don't about Turkish coffee it requires an incredibly fine grind a grind so fine that it is like confectioner's sugar. I bought a bag of New Guinea coffee. I got half ground for espresso and the rest half ground four Turkish coffee. The espresso was perfect, but the Turkish turned out not to be fine enough. Now this is no reflection on them they only can work with what they have. They used an industry-standard grinder that turns out not to be able to do that find a grind (even though it has a setting that marked Turkish). Things happen. A lot of places would be all "Buyer be ware" about something like this without a receipt). But not Mike, the manager, he was super: not only did he offer just to give me my cash back without bothering to see my receipt, I did have the package it came in and it was clearly there coffee from the scent, they also offered to give me something else in a different grind, for example for my expresso machine if I wanted to have that instead of money. You have to realize now that they carry a prepackaged coffee, no open bins of coffee. That means they waere willing to give me half of a bag and then toss the rest: in effect spending twice as much money as I had paid for that coffee just to make sure their customer was happy. This phenomena may be unfamiliar to you this is called good business. read more

Located inside the Belvedere Square Market, there's plenty of space to sit and chat if you're looking for a place to hang out. Their staff accidentally charged us for an extra chai and went to look for their manager to figure out what to do. She was gone for a long while so we just left after some time (sorry!). MMMmmmmm homemade chicken pot pie. It doesn't get much better than a pot pie chock full of veggies, potatoes and chicken, steaming hot and creamy with a side of greens to lighten things up. Delish. We were lucky enough to snag a table in the outdoor section during the lunch rush. Although it did get pretty warm sitting in the sun out there, it was really nice and almost felt like spring! Our waitress was nice, not overly attentive; she never stayed longer than 30 seconds, just long enough to get orders before heading off to other tables. But I get it, it's lunch time, it's busy. The food is fine, always fresh, and a little pricey ($12 for a turkey sandwich and a cup of coffee). I have to question the person managing the floor staff, however, based on my last two visits. On Father's Day a server who was visibly ill (I guessed hungover) was sleeping it off near the main entrance, using the high top counter as his pillow. Regardless of whether he was partying or had a virus, he needed to be sent home, not to the main area where customers are dining. The next month I saw an employee wearing an absolutely filthy baseball hat on their head. The white front panel was covered in dirt and a bird feather was sticking out of the side. At first I figured she was a farm worker delivering produce, but nope, she was serving food in that thing. Whether or not it's fair, some people consider bird feathers to be dirty. Based on the condition of the hat, I'm guessing the feather had not been washed either. Admittedly these are petty complaints that have less to do with the food or service and more to do with the professional standards management applies to employees. read more
