I'm sure on most occasions this place is great. But I was completely lied to by a female employee over the phone. I was looking for a specific shoe. Color and all. I even went into detail about the colors to be sure she had it. She told me they did and I drove over from Santa Cruz on my lunch to just hand them my money and hurry back. BEST athletic shoe store EVER! I have small, wide feet. Other shoe stores usually fit me with with a larger shoe size to accomodate the width and I end up paying for shoes that don't fit right. I truly appreciate that Athletic Performance fitted me with children shoes that fit perfectly, cost less and look great for an adult. They also stock XS socks too, which is another plus. First time I have walked into an athletic shoe store and walked out with two great fitting shoes. I am a definate fan of this store. read more

This is not the kind of business I would like to be giving 1-star: a nice little shop downtown Los Gatos. But, this had to be the worst experience I have had in a running shop, and I have been to a few. Sorry for the long story below, but wanted to make sure I was being as fair to the truth as possible. Quick summary, for those not wanting the long story: In a single pair of shoes, this shop made at least 4 big mistakes: - They recommended the wrong number after measuring my feet - They had no idea of the shoe they were selling - Went I went back to tell them my experience, they tried to convince me of unreasonable things, without hearing what I had to say - After they acknowledged their mistake, they did nothing useful to make up for it I went in on a weekday evening, when there was no one in the shop except the attendant (I actually thought that he might be the owner, but later found out this was not the case). I showed him the list of 15+ models I had looked up for my kind of foot and running. He then asked me for my size, but I wasn't sure. I have recently relocated from Europe, and I am not familiar with US sizes. So, I did tell him it could be around a 10, but I wasn't sure. He measured my foot, and said "yeah, it's a 10". Out of the 15+ models I had in the list, they only had two. He did not even tried to present me with similar ones. Just a Nike and a Mizuno model. Fortunately, I did like the Mizuno Wave Creation 12 a lot. I tried them on, ran with them a bit, and bought them. I started my weekly routine. I felt the shoes a bit stiff on the toes side, but liked them otherwise. But, after my first weekly long run, I got a black toe nail. I have run for some time now (around 30 miles/week) and never got a black toe nail, although I know they are not so strange for some people. But it did feel a bit suspicious that this happened just 3 runs after changing to the Mizuno. I did a bit of research online, and found out that all reviews talked about problems on the toes and recommended getting at least 1/2 a size more (see http://www.runpals.com/mizuno-creation.html or some of the Amazon reviews here http://www.amazon.com/Mizuno-Wave-Creation-Running-White/product-reviews/B004DKLBZG). I was not about to keep using these shoes, but needed some for my next run so I rushed to Running Revolution in Campbell (I strongly recommend). After measuring and analyzing my feet in detail, they told me that I needed at least a size 11... on any model! And for some, they recommended going to 11 1/2. What? So Athletic performance had given me one number less than I need on a show known to cause problems on the toes? You bet. The day after I called Athletic Performance and they told me to come over to "see what they could do". When I showed up some days later I talked to whom I think is the owner. First thing he did was look at the shoes and tell me he could not take back some shoes like this since they looked used (of course they did, they had about 30 miles on them, some on dirt track, and I had not cleaned them). He did not even try listening to my story and got all defensive on why he could not take those shoes back. He tried to convince me that the problem was not the shoe size, but the downhill running, the way the shoe laces were tied, or even the socks I was using. After some talking, he offered to measure my feet. After doing that, he did agree the shoes may be 1/2 number too small. He had no idea about the details of that model or the fact that people complain about being too tight on toes. He did agree that they might be "a bit tight". But all he offered was a change to a lighter insole. He also kept the shoes in the store for a couple of days to put them on a shoe stretcher. If you look at the shoes and what they are made of, you can easily understand this is a pointless procedure. But I accepted this just to see if he would change his mind after a couple of days adn offer me some other deal. Nada. After all of this, I asked him: "With the new insoles and the stretching, would you now recommend them for running?". His answer: "No, but they make a great pair of walking shoes". So, if you ever need a pair of walking shoes that can get you a black toe nail for $140, you know where to go. But if you need some professional advice for a pair of running shoes, do yourself a favor and head somewhere else (I went to Running Revolution and liked it, but I am sure there are other around.) read more

Went here today for the first time today. I called in the morning to see if the shoes I wanted were in stock. Thankfully they were and I came in after I got off work to try them on. One of the insoles to the shoes I wanted was scrunched up so the man who helped me gladly switched it out for me. On top of that, he gave me a 20% discount. Shoes that were originally 129, came out to be 113. Overall it was a great experience and I will definitely be coming back in the future for my running shoes needs! read more

I purchased a pair of running shoes from here. Within a few weeks of my purchase, a piece of the heel fell off during a trail run I did. I called the store to inquire whether I should contact the manufacturer regarding the problem, or whether Athletic Performance could help me based on the fact that I purchased them there. The young man I spoke with said he would be happy to help, and to just bring the shoes in for an exchange. When I got there, an older gentleman assisted me. I explained to him what happened, and that I had just spoken with someone on the phone regarding the return. Through our entire discourse, he looked and spoke to me as if I was trying to pull one over on him. Because of his apparent irritation, I asked him if he would prefer I deal with the manufacturer directly. He went off on this long rant saying that, since the shoe was defective, the manufacturer would definitely reimburse him for the return, but it would take him forever to get his money back. And, as a small business owner, it was not ideal to wait for the reimbursement. He was clearly not happy about it, which I guess is why he was treating me so poorly. Then it came time to pick out a new pair of replacement shoes since they no longer carried the ones I had originally purchased. He practically followed me around the store, suggesting certain shoes I should buy. Everything he suggested was on the clearance rack, and retailed for way less than the shoe I purchased. When I'd ask about non-clearance items, similar to the ones I had purchased, he'd retort with some reason why I wouldn't want the shoe. It was very odd. I finally selected a pair of shoes which ended up costing about $20 more than my original pair, and went to the register to pay the difference between my return and the cost of the new shoes. He told me that they normally offer 20% off of all new shoe purchases, but didn't feel comfortable giving that to me on the new pair. Not even sure what his reasoning was for offering up that little tidbit. I was so embarrassed and irritated by that point that I told him I could really care less about his 20% discount. I went in today & bought a pair of trail shoes from Brad. It's the 3rd pair of shoes I've gotten from this store. I really like the customer service here. They spend a lot of time with you to make sure you get the right shoe for your particular foot. Yes, the store is small but they have a ton of inventory. I have a hard to fit foot (wide & high arches) and they always have options for me. I hate going to those big brand name stores with the high schoolers working there who know nothing about the shoes they are selling. I'm always happy with the selection & service at Athletic Perfomance...I think it's worth the drive from Sunnyvale. read more

Came here looking for a crossfit shoe. I left with a crossfit shoe. The man who helped me was really nice and was very knowledgeable and interested. Apparently he also does crossfit and even did some training over at the American Kickboxing Academy. So that was pretty cool. I tried on a couple pairs of shoes, picked the one I liked the best, and it was done. The guy even gave us a 20% discount on the already reasonable price despite not being a VIP member. Been having a bit of foot pain and thought new shoes would help. When presenting the situation to the employee, I received, "Well, if you don't know what you want, I really can't help you." It's good to wander outside the norm to see what else is out there and in this case, I'm sorry to say Athletic Performance wasn't worth walking into. One star is generous! I had a terrible experience in this store and i will never shop there again! I don't recommend buying running shoes here. I was told i basically I can't run in them to make sure they are a good fit. In addition, I had to wait for everyone else in the store to be helped before I could be helped, even though I was there before the other people. ive convinced my husband that asics were the way to go in the running world. he fell in love with the GT-2130 but could NOT find his size anywhere (9.5 E)! we called at least 15 different stores before finding them here. we drove from santa clara and were extremely pleased with the service and knowledge about the shoes provided to us by the staff. they were really friendly and werent too forceful (as some retailers could be). their store IS a bit tiny but their merchandise is anything but! they get new shipments every wednesday, which is great! im glad we found this place. we will definitely be buying all of our running shoes here from now on and would highly recommend everyone else to do the same! read more

So, I originally gave a 2-star rating because of the issue written below... However, within a day, the owner has contacted me and settled the situation. I truly appreciate this level of service and commitment to keeping a positive image. I've bought my last 4 pairs of running shoes from this store and have loved them until recently. I bought a $100+ pair of Nike running shoes and after only several wears, the top sides started to rip. I went in to show them my shoes and ask for an exchange or refund. The woman I spoke to asked if I had my receipt and I showed her my bank statement, as I did not still have my receipt. I was told that she would check with Nike to see if they considered it defective and that she'd order me a new pair and call me when they were in. She never called. I went in the following week and was told that she was out and I could try back later. I left my number AGAIN and asked that she call me. She didn't. I actually think that this woman is the owner/manager. Sad. While my past experiences with other employees were fine, I felt as though this woman was doubting my account of what happened with the shoes and that I really shouldn't complain since I bought them a month ago. I'm sadly disappointed and will not be buying any more shoes here. This last experience ruined it. read more

They know what shoe is the right one for you because there are times I wanted this shoe or that shoe, but they gave me other shoes, which I am really glad that I got that pair. The customer service here is phenomenal. I have sent all of my friends to this store to purchase running shoes. They were right on with recommendations and very patient with service while I tried on different models. They were not pushy at all. Their prices are comparable to amazon.com for the same shoes, which surprised me. Los Gatos is usually a little more expensive. They are very friendly too, made me feel quite comfortable. I walked in and was helped in under 5 minutes. They gave me a shoe to try out and test and I loved the initial shoe they gave me. Just to be on the safe side I tried out different shoes that had a small difference from the original and they immediately vetoed any shoe that did not keep my running form in good condition. The guys were really friendly and gave me some advice for my future running. I recommend coming with an open mind and trusting the decisions of these employees. While I wasn't immediately greeted as I walked in the door, within about two minutes (and this during a conversation about a friend who had passed away recently none the less) one of the clerks stopped the conversation to come see if there was anything she could do for me. I've been coming here for years and love this shop. A lot of us growing up here used to switch between here and the Runner's Factory which disappeared. Since then, this shop has grown quite a bit with quite a selection. It's always a pleasure to be helped by Willy and friends. Additionally some can get 20% off here which is amazing, especially when doing larger purchases to stock up for the year! I do wish however there was a little more help with sprinting explaining the different types of plates and I do wish that some would listen to us more as we've had some folks insist on one shoe when we do already know what we're getting or we know that some shoes won't be the best of fits. read more

I went into Athletic Performance as directed by my podiatrist. A very courteous and caring young lady named Kimberly assisted me. I tried A pair of "Hodas", but they were not the correct fit for my feet. I went back on another day and was helped by a man, but did not take notice of his name. I went home with a different pair of "Hodas" and they did not work out, as I was pronating. I returned them and asked for Kimberly, as she had been so helpful and knowledgeable on my previous visit. She put me in a pair of Asic Foundation and I am happy to say that these were the ones for me. I took them to my podiatrist last week and he totally approved of them. My feet are now happy and I am walking for my health. Thanks again Kimberly and Athletic Performance. I will be buying my shoes there from now on. My family has shopped here for years. I am greeted immediately when I enter the store and they give us a discount because my husband is a member of West Valley Joggers and Striders. This is a "high end" running shoe store so you will pay top dollar. I recommend Asic gray mountain running shoe for sensitive ankles. A couple of times they let me bring my dog in the store and were very nice to him. Another really great thing is I've seen them open Sunday mornings, very early. This is the place to go if you want to buy running shoes. First off, this is the only store I have ever found that has an adequate selection of wide(2E, 4E) shoes, which serves as a testament of their excellent slection of running shoes. They had me try on a few different pairs, each time narrowing down which size shoe I need exactly. Within five minutes they found my perfect shoe. I was recommended to go to the strore by SJC fit. Went there with a friend, the lady at the counter didn't even acknowledge us...and tried to ignore us. We said hello and got our shoes. She didn't want to help us, didn't want show us any choices. We still bought from the store. Looks like my friend got the wrong size packed for her. She had to leave for vacation for 3 weeks.
