The real review: I don't know what gym these people went to. I used to be a long time member but in reality one needs to spend more than a day there to really get a feel for it. The owner is an "EX" bodybuilding competitor with an arrogant and intimidating persona. The place does have decent equipment however despite it being kept in good condition the stuff is old and showing its age. I did like the equipment for the variety and ergonomics. The cardio equipment is older which doesnt mean it isnt effective however it is and does feel dated. Most of the photos on the gyms advertised website are not photos representing the actual facility they are in fact stock photos. The gym is poorly lit with dark areas and all the equipment is painted black which in essence seemingly attracts the aggressive lower edge of our society making it feel like it is in a ghetto area. Only one of the trainers is legitimately licensed and insured and in the state of Florida it is illegal to rain without liability insurance as of 2012. There are only two agencies that are legitimately insurable NSCA and ISSA. If you pick up a business card from the front desk for a trainer notice there are no license numbers printed on them. On top of that two of the personal trainers in there carry handguns iether on them or in there carry arround bags I know this because they were shown to me. Law enforcement aside I just dont see the logic or need to have a gun while one is training or proffessional training others..in a public gym? Leave it in the car or locker. I suspect if people that trained there knew this it would not sit well with very many customers. Allowing gym bags in the workout areas is not permitted in most upscale gyms including golds worlds and others that have enforced rules and gym ediquette for this reason. My fiancee was intimidated during a workout by one of them something I told the owner several times which was ignored. There are rules posted in a couple of areas some are small pieces of paper taped to mirrors but they are never enforeced unless a complaint is made. I tried that once and given the mature of the male owner that i experienced I can understand why one would want to. That aside why there isnt a suggestion box like many similar facilities have is testment to iether not caring about client feedback or not wanting to know. Several cars have been broken into in the parking with the owners finding the side windows broken in. My car has two hit and run dents on both sides of the front from parking there. But that isnt the owners fault just means you have to be careful where you park. It was rare to see a woman using the weights in the dumbell and bench areas unless accomanpied by a trainer ..in my opinion they must feel intimidated by the over juiced thugs that are either talking on their cell phones or screaming out their routines as if pregnant. The change facilities are in need of a serious upgrade the toilet stalls on the male side are simply filthy and lined with ages of grimy filthty on the inside. The cleaners obviously only wipe down the outside of them. I would hope be finally had it cleaned properly by now especially after he reads this review. There is one tanning bed per sex and they are very old and rarely cleaned after use. I have many times had to clean it myself after noticing large areas of dried sweat. That is not to say they don't work they do just not very effectively but at 5$ a tan one cant complain much. The owner is living in denial it is old, feels dirty with grainy lighting and just has to many thug types working out there. If the place was attached to a prison it would be perfect. Horrible experience! Saw Groupon online so went to gym with girlfriend and tried gym with 3 day pass...Decided to join even though the cardio equipment is over 10 years old and feel like your running on big broken rocks. I wanted the gym for the leg equipment not cadio so I was still willing to join. When I went to join the owners wife told me and my girlfriend they would not honor the groupon because I previously had a 3 day pass??? The Groupon said you can not have a previous membership...The owners wife tried to convince me the 3 day pass was a membership making the Groupon not valid.... Why would I buy a membership before I try? The owners wife told me to leave and get a refund??... This is your classic bait and switch...This is what scam artists do to people..... So I emailed the owner Mitch Berman who was just as rude as his wife. He said I was threatening him when I told him I was going to write a bad review. He then threatened to get me in trouble with Groupon. Not only did he threaten me legally he told me to "FIND ANOTHER GYM!"...The entire gym smells like urine and the machines are older than your grandparents...Save yourself the trouble and go to LA Fitness (Brand new 55,000 sq ft gym on US1 in Pompano) or the ZOO in ft Lauderdale. I have been a member for roughly 3 years now and would hate to go anywhere else. If your looking for a gym where you can play dress up, talk on your cell, prance around with your fancy water bottles and stick your nose up at everyone....then go to LA fitness or some other local gym chain. The owners and workers promote a very friendly enviroment, and over a short time you will be on a first name basis with a lot of the members and employees. Even if your a novice lifter or expert , anyone seems approachable to me and willing to help whether it is the employees, trainers, or members. I am a powerlifter and they have everything i could possibly need to train effectively, they have more then enough cardio equipment available but i try to stay away from that as my cardio is walking from car to gym door. The facilities are always well kept and clean, and the equipment is always in working order. As i have see machines out of comission it is always only for a short time before theyare fixed. Overall the best points of this gym are the friendly members, great management, extremely fair monthly price, abundance of weights. read more

Bob M. is obviously a disgruntled former member who is choosing to bash this gym because something didn't go his way. I have been a consistent member of The Athletic Factor for several years now and have never experienced any of the issues addressed in Bob's review. If Bob had a problem with the owner, there must have been an issue involving himself he is choosing not to disclose. The owner has always been more than friendly with me and I have never experienced this "Intimidating" person Bob speaks of. As for the rest of his review... Quite Obviously, All Lies... It's so good to know that there is an amazing gym like the athletic factor, where you can get a real hardcore workout. Whether your the most serious bodybuilder or competitor or want to take a silver sneakers class, they have it all. Great shake bar. Super friendly staff, and amazing trainers. The Athletic Factor is a great facility. I have been a member for over a year now and I don't plan on going anywhere else. This place is home to a very diverse group of people. Members range from professional athletes to housewives. Everyone is friendly and there is an overall good vibe. The staff is friendly and the owners are beyond accommodating. I plan to continue attending this gym for many many years. The Athletic Factor is without a doubt, the best gym in South Florida! Don't just take my word for it. Great Staff in the Pompano Beach Athletic Factor Gym. The place is clean and the people are friendly. I have trained at the Pompano Athletic Factor Gym for the last year. I enjoy hitting the free weights at the gym after a sparing session in the MMA, & Wingchun classes. Ive been a fitness professional for 14 years and have been to more gyms then I can remember, Athletic Factor is my home away from home. A new fancy LA Fitness or 24 Hour fitness it is not but if you want a gym with class act staff, members and great weight machines and great dumbells this is spot. If you want bells and whistles go elsewhere but if you want to get in shape and be motivated from all walks of life come here. I just moved here from Boston few months ago was looking for a decent gym even if halfway ok as I can make do with most anything. I have been to a couple local gyms already that had good vibes and I did try this one out but I didn't get great vibes. The staff seem friendly but most gyms are pretty cool on that end anyways. I guess for me its just important that I get good energy from it and I didn't from this one and it wasn't in a great location for me either also kind-of stuck at the back of an older strip mall. read more

I really like this gym, i was a little intimidated to join a gym for the 1st time. i never worked out before and i wasnt sure what to do but the staff and trainers were beyond helpful. they welcomed me and made me feel like family. its nice when you walk into a place and everyone knows your name. i am no longer nervous about exercising and have actually lost over 20 lbs since ive been coming. This place is awesome!! The owners and the staff made me feel right at home as soon as I walked through the door. The first thing I noticed was how clean the gym was! I asked a million questions and they were all answered perfectly. I never felt pressured at all! I love the old school basement style gym feel. The owners and front door staff are really friendly and make you feel right at home. There are no high pressure sales tactics or long term contracts.
