Planet Fitness started in 1992, when founders Michael and Marc Grondahl purchased a struggling Gold's Gym franchise in Dover, New Hampshire. They eventually closed that original location and opened a gym called Coastal Fitness. They added a third partner, former CEO Chris Rondeau. In 2002, they purchased the rights to the name Planet Fitness from Rick Berks who had started his own Planet Fitness gym in 1993 in Sunrise, Florida. He got the name from his daughter's school project, Fitness Planet. Today Planet Fitness is chain of gyms with memberships as low as $10 a month. It has more than 7 million members and is one of the fastest-growing health club franchises in the U.S. The company has around 2,600 clubs making it one of the largest fitness club franchises by number of members and locations. The company majority is owned by private-equity firm TSG Consumer Partners. This Planet Fitness location is in the Planet Fitness Plaza on Powerline Road in Pompano. This isn't my usual gym so I enjoyed checking out another Planet Fitness to compare. Pompano seemed larger and more open than my gym. The equipment was set up in similar locations so I could find what I wanted. Some of the machines that get backed up in my local gym were more available here. They also had four of my beloved iFIT bikes compared to the two my gym has. The only thing I didn't like was it felt very hot in here. I would have appreciated lowering the AC. Like my gym, the Pompano location is also 24 hours which I love. Sometimes I like to come very late on the weekends when the gym is empty so I can feel I little more free in trying new things. This location also has the Black Card area for the $25 a month members with tanning beds, hydro beds, and massage chairs. I barely have enough time to work out never mind lie around so this has not been an appealing upgrade for me. The locker room has showers but that is another feature that I don't care to use. Overall I have been happy with Planet Fitness. I have been going on a regular basis for a few months now and can see the change in my body. The hours are great and I can pop in for as little or as long as I have. The machines are easy to use and they have videos on You Tube and QR codes on the machines so you know how to use them. There are so many ways to work out that I am never bored. I try to learn a new machine each time I come and I incorporate both cardio and weights into my workouts. Whatever part of your body that you want to work on, there are numerous ways to get there. Best of all this gym is not intimidating for beginners but is equally great for the hard core fitness fanatic. People stick to their own thing and you can feel comfortable doing yours in the "Judgement Free Zone." You can download the Planet fitness app that makes check in a breeze, tracks your progress and workouts, and where you can even find home workouts. The app also lets you know how crowded the gym is. I like that it works with the Apple Health app on my watch. So far this is the longest fitness routine I have stuck to and it has seeped into other areas of my life like a better diet and more regular visits to the doctor to keep up with my health goals and to think it all started with the first time I stepped through the door of a Planet Fitness. read more

I went there today to try it out and was greeted by a woman who spoke to me with her mouth full. She said I could look around, so I did. When I went back to the desk and said I would like to try it, I was told (with her mouth full) to download the app. The service was terrible in there for cell usage so I asked if there was WiFi, she then said with her mouth still full and spitting food and pointing towards something that I couldn't understand to the wall. There was nothing there. The WiFi info was on the desk. I tried to connect to that and that didn't work. I was so frustrated by how rude the woman was and that I was receiving no help that I left. Plenty of parking but the busy times are from 7am-9am or from 2:30pm to 6 pm. The space is clean!! I appreciate that as a patron. The bathrooms and locker rooms are attended to frequently. The link alarm rarely goes off and the spray bottles and paper towels are filled regularly. The equipment is starting to show wear and tear but the vast majority of it is working as intended with maybe 1-2 machines out of order. I'm a member of planet fitness and I go to a lot of different locations when I travel. This is the worst planet fitness I've been to. Most of the machines I used smelled like body odor. Or like they never get cleaned. Men's locker room was really unclean. The 3 sinks didn't work properly, so it was impossible to wash your hands. The bathroom stalls were dirty. I have been working out at this planet fitness for many, many weeks now doing my own mini CrossFit training. Today the "general manager" Ruth decided that she would pick on me and stop my work out and not only tell me that I could not continue to jog, which was actually a fast walk at the far unoccupied end of the gym where I purposely avoided everyone and was being very respectful but she also wanted to start telling me I needed to always wear my mask. When I pointed out 20 other people within eyesight that didn't have their mask on and she didn't say anything to them at all. I really used to love this place because they would just leave you alone as long as you were respectful of which again I always was. Anyhow when you're working out you just want to be left alone and that unfortunately wasn't possible today. What a shame such a beautiful facility that can be ruined by employees with The wrong attitude. Maybe she was just having a bad day. I am a fan of this particular location. In the time I've worked out here the lunk alarm might've sounded once. I've never witnessed any bullying or judgement because most folks come to crank out a workout and keep it moving. Generally speaking folks are great about wiping down equipment and rarely is anything out of use. The staff does a great job of maintaining the place clean and dust free including the locker rooms. Other nearby locations leave a lot to be desired, the size of this gym makes it so that you've got room to move around and the 5am crew is nothing but support and good vibes. Tip: Check the app for occupancy levels on peak days like Monday and Tuesday afternoons vs weekends etcetera. You can check how busy it is or isn't before you even set foot inside. read more

I made the mistake of joining planet fitness, and made the payments on auto pay. I moved to my new house that has a gym, I tried to cancel my payments to planet fitness but they kept on charging my account, DO NOT JOIN THIS CLUB AT ANY LOCATION!!!!! So since I have been unable to cancel my account I instructed my bank not to auto pay PF anymore. This company is the most incompetent company I've ever dealt with! I went in late tonight with my guest (bf), I started to feel unwell and went home while he stayed on for a while. I then get a call at 2am from your employee Jerry who is aggressively yelling at me that I signed a contract and I've breached it by leaving my guest unattended and he will call the cops. I've been coming in here for years with guests and no one has ever had an issue if i left early and i certainly understand but this mans contentious behavior and the fact he called me more than once at an inappropriate hour is grounds for harassment. I called him back to ask for his name and he pugnaciously said that the cops were there. I'm sorry but I'm supposed to feel comfortable with this level of combativeness from your floor people? It's crazy to say but almost half of my life ago (17 years), I learned how to workout at a Planet Fitness location. The mantra if you will is very different today than it was then. When you get the tour, it is explained that the gym is a "beginner's" and no judgement gym which of course anyone doesn't want to be judged when they are in the gym. The PF I started working out at was a gym with machines I wish others had now and it was a gym for all levels. At first I was really excited about coming here. New Year's is coming and the gyms will be packed. I thought about cancelling my LA Fitness membership and just moving somewhere I didn't have to be as bothered. There are two different kinds of memberships. A $10 a month one that limits you to the gym where you sign up with a $39 yearly membership fee, and a Black Membership that ranges in the monthly price depending on deals with a $59 yearly fee (also dependent on deals). After trying the gym for a few days, I knew there was no way I was leaving LA, but pondered adding on the $10 a month membership as a secondary option which I am still debating. I found myself looking for machines I am used to using, and them not existing here. The staff was very friendly, and the members have gym etiquette you wish people had at the other gyms. It's feels like everywhere else people forget their manners and hygiene overall. Everyone at Planet Fitness cleans off the machines after they use them which is nice. With the Black Membership, there are some perks included such as Unlimited Massage Chair usage, Unlimited HydroMassage beds, an Infra-Red Standing bed that helps with different things, usage of both a standup or laying tanning bed, and unlimited guests with you. For me the reasons I can't leave LA 100% for here is because: - There are more cardio machines than they could possibly need and lack of machines that I use regularly. - No sauna - No spin room/cycling bikes which I use almost every visit (For other people overall options such as swimming pool, basketball, racquetball, and exercise classes are not available although a trainer does workouts within the gym on equipment for body parts/areas) - Overall choice and variety of machines - No sitting shoulder benches or shoulder machines Things I liked: - Changing stalls with locks and full length mirrors by the shower area - Indents in the shower wall to put your soap, shampoo/conditioner - Lockers have coded locks so you don't have to bring one - Lots of flat screen tv's to watch while doing cardio - Lots of cleaning stations with cleaning spray/paper towels - Circuit training area with a minute time clock for each machine My husband will be getting a membership as he can accomplish what he wants to and isn't quite as picky as me. I am not sure on what I will decide in terms of a membership here because of what overall matters to me. This is a great add on for convenience, and as they said for beginners. The gym is open 24/7, and there are surveillance cameras/videos and someone always on staff on the premises so any safety concerns you may have are addressed in those regards. read more

Filthy! At least 5 broken machines for the past month. Staff indifferent to repair requests and say it's corporates problem. Missing soap dispenser for months, broken toilet seats in all stalls which slip sideways when you lean. Toilets do not flush properly. There is usually feces built up in the toilets which takes 2-3 flushes to clear. The management refuses to enforce rules plainly written. They target persons they do not like it appears. Definately NOT a no judgement zone. Way differently run than our planet fitness at home. These people seem to write new rules all the time. Going to any planet fitness with the black card is a misdirection at the least. You can go but only 10 times or they charge 5.00 a visit. Read the fine print they say! Buyer be ware. read more

DIrty gym....The help sometimes 3-4 kids at the front desk chatting and having fun. The place is full of dirt and dust around and under the machines it has not been cleaned in weeks as I have see the dust balls for 3 weeks now. Mens urinal has been broken for 1.5 weeks, a door in one of the stalls in the mens bathroom broken and off the hinges for weeks. You ask for a manger and they are alwasy gone ("in a meeting"). Didn't even have me for 6 months. This location is awful as I'm sure most are. They have NO manager so the place is rudderless and the workers are too stupid to know how to do anything I guess. Broken machines for 5-6 weeks isn't acceptable but these dopes think it is. Not being able to use a machine bc you dont have a PIN for it is just beyond stupid-they cost about $2! Any problems here, they'll blame a manager who doesn't exist, or 'corporate' but either way, nothing ever changes. Below You will see the review I did previously that I originally gave 4 stars: i come into this spa area to unwind and relax. 3 times now this same lady has been sprawled out on the couch WATCHING TV WITH IT BLARING ( in a relaxation zone). I have been coming to this gym for 2-3 years now and I've always brought my small draw string bag. Has my water, car key, feminine products, my lifting belt, gloves, etc.. All of a sudden, I get stopped by a an employee saying "Are you continuing your workout? If you are then you'll have to lock up your bag in our lockers". Pissed off I ask to talk to the manager. She doesn't budge and I cancel my gym membership. She tells me I have a few weeks left at the gym because of the timing of cancelation. Few days later, I come in with no bag and now I'm carrying my belongings. What do I see?! Backpacks, Fanny packs, massive water jugs, and little bags (fanny pack was not being worn and was on the ground). So why was it a big tiff when I bring in my bag? I don't want to hear "Oh we must've missed that." Because it was what 5-6 people you missed? Get your stuff together and stop selecting who can and can NOT bring a bag. This company is crooked. This place hires incompetent employees. It's so hard to reach the manager because she's always "busy". They stole over $100 from my account & refused to refund it all back. The gym is okay, but water fountain is always broken and water is not cold. Been that way for 3 years. The main problem I have is with the PF executives. They created a policy for no jeans in workout area. Any other fabric is acceptable, pants or shorts, but not denim. The reason I was given from the staff is it ruins the equipment upholstery. That is absurd. Anyway I showed up in "jean shorts" one day and was denied access by the manager. "It is our policy no jeans, period." The contract states jeans, not jean shorts, I checked. I was not happy as I'd ridden my bike to the gym and was in no position to return home to change. I think it's important to speak up on PF policy when it does not make sense. read more

This gym suprised me with how clean and organized everything is. I came here for the first time today. There is a large variety of equipment in the strength training and cardio section. Also the front desk was very helpful in explaining how the membership works. Very clean gym, everything is brand new. Staff is almost freakishly too nice, which I really won't complain about but management definitely has a good handle on the customer service part of this. Coming from LA Fitness, where the staff barely makes an effort to say hello and fails to keep the gym clean, this place is great. Massage chairs and beds to end your workout is just icing on the cake. Really wish they had better options for chest workouts though. Great place. I only go at night to avoid the usual "gym people" and it's fantastic. The only con I can think of is that they do not allow you to pay for a years membership in advance. This is simply because they want the automatic renewal to continue to debit your account whether or not you still live in the area. This gym opened a few months ago five mins from my house, so I decided to give it a try, since I cancelled my membership at blast fitness. The staff is always friendly whenever I go in. They have two 30 min workout routines where you go from one machine (60 secs) to the next with a 30 SEC break inbetween. They have sanitizing station around so you can spray your machine after you used it. The bathrooms are always clean. They have two membership options. The $10 which is the regular one or the black card which is $19.99 and you get to use tanning, hydromachine, chair massage and some kind of beauty light. Plus you get half off of merchandise and water. If you want to avoid the girls that put makeup on to go to the gym and look cute and the guys that take pictures while lifting heavy weights, then try planet fitness. read more

I was told I could not dance because no one else was. As a semi professional dancer I've been dancing my entire life and spend hours dancing at the gym as cardio and to cool down between sets. This is the first time I've ever been told I can't dance at a gym, because no one else was and that dancing does not count as exercise. This is the best gym by far compared to all the other gyms I have joined in the best. Everything about this gym blows others out of the water. They are inexpensive only $10.00 per month, how can you beat that?? They have free training and the trainer Vincent is Amazing, I love his positive personality, he keeps you motivated and going! They have cold water coming out of fountain and they have a special fountain that fills out water bottles (I have never seen that before). Other gyms have cocky unapproachable staff that I would feel were judgy! Not here the staff is full of smiles and they are always looking for ways to help you. They feel down to earth. I did hear from others in the community (places within the plaza) that this gym is permanently closing, and I have not been able to get a refund on my membership. On October 27th, 2019 a man watched me on the elliptical for almost an hour without working out himself. He sat on a bench and pretended to lift weights once. I hadn't intended to spend 45 minutes on the elliptical, but his blatant staring made me feel that it was unsafe to get off; he circled around me, like a hawk hunting prey, barely taking the effort to pretend to work out for 35 minutes. An employee should have been on the floor and should have said something. I stayed the extra ten minutes thinking he left and that it would be okay to finish my workout and do what I actually came there to do. I went to the tricep press and before I had finished my first set, the man who had been watching me sat down at the tricep extension across from me, and again, didn't work out; he just stared. He wasn't smiling or trying to talk to me, just staring. I finished another set with him staring at me and immediately cleaned the machine and went straight to the front desk. I'm 29 years old and the young lady behind the desk was probably a decade my junior. I told her what happened and as I described the man, she asked me "Is he wearing a blue shirt?" My blood curdled. He had followed me, at a distance, to the desk. When I turned around, he turned around and walked to the drinking fountain. I turned back to her and she asked if I wanted her to speak with him or write a report. I said preferably to speak with him, but I immediately thought about her safety, too, and just told her that I was leaving and that if he tried to follow me to stop him. I started sobbing as soon as I got to my car. I returned after a week to file a proper complaint because Planet Fitness Corporate hadn't followed through in a timely fashion. The young lady and gentlemen at the desk were compassionate and helpful, I left feeling confident that it was being taken seriously. Their manager, Ruth, who was not working the day of the incident nor the day I reported, was neither helpful nor compassionate. Rather than addressing the problem with the man in question, or even listening to my concerns about making the gym a safer place, I was told that nothing could be done. If you are a woman and safety is a concern for you, don't go to this gym because it's not a concern for them. read more
