Athena's also puts on fun events like belly dancing, Persian New year and murder mystery dinner parties. Service is good - the restaurant is small and basic with an open kitchen. I was looking for a place to eat in Astoria and I was excited to see a Greek/middle eastern spot. We plugged Athena into the GPS and were very surprised when we were expected to drive over this tiny rickety bridge to get to the pier. At first I thought it was pedestrian only, but glad everything worked out! Athena is within the building on the pier; the ambience is pleasant with nice music playing and a cozy space. I sadly had to take a star off because the food just wasn't great, it was just ok. For example, the tzatziki was just plain Greek yogurt out of a tub. I was really hoping for a rich lemony, garlicky tzatziki with dill, and we got none of those flavors. The rice was ok but not as good as any other apron rice I have ordered. All in all, if they step up the flavor, this could be a really great spot! read more

We near Tarpon Springs FL and this is hands down the best Mediterranean food we've ever had. We had the Greek fries and the Shawarma platter both beef-lamb. Can't say enough good things about it but in particular it was great to eat a quality meal with fresh vegetables. The perfect respite from endless days of clam chowder and fish n chips. I'm ranking 5 star because we are always excited to see new restaurants and different cuisines in Astoria. I had the chicken gyro ...not traditional in that the chicken was more a turmeric yellow with a different taste than what I'd expect for Greek. The French fries in the gyro are not that good and seem more like filler. Lettuce was bigger pieces and not shredded as I would typically find in a gyro. Tomatoes were good...as it is the middle of summer...I'd expect that. I also got the baklava. Also, different from what I would call traditional. It was rolled and had rose petals and rose water. It was pretty good...I'm just not a big fan of rose water. I'm left wondering if there is some other influence here ...Lebanese? Other Mediterranean? Thanks for the note, Rose....Persian influence makes sense and another wonderful cuisine. read more

This place was wonderful! We stumbled upon it while walking around pier 39 and it made for a very pleasant surprise. The interior was well furnished and very welcoming, the staff were friendly, and the food was delicious. We ordered the lamb-beef shawarma platter with an appetizer of pita and hummus. The pate was well put together and very fresh. The only thing that could have been better was the pita, it appeared to be store bought and warmed up but still tasted fine with the hummus. We give an extra point for having "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" on in the background whilst we waited. This place is definitely a good place to try if you're in the Astoria area! read more

There's live karaoke on Thursdays. Got the lamb gyro which came with garlic french fries inside. Was tasty! Also got the Persian live cake which is like an angel food cake with cardamom and rosewater. Highly recommended. Service was quick. read more

The owners are really nice and go out of their way to make sure your experience is positive, however, I think they need to work on their timing skills as my partner's gyro came out long before my shawarma plate did. I'm giving this place four stars for their attentiveness. Everything on my shawarma plate was decent except the chicken which was too salty. It was also shredded and I'm used to it being cubed. They were busy so I can't complain too much about the wait for our entrees to come out, but it did seem to take a while. All in all, they seem like a nice young couple and I hope they work out a few of their kinks. read more

I simply CANNOT begin to tell you how delicious this was! A huge plate of perfectly tender and juicy chicken schwarma with hummus, rice, pita, olive/tomatoes/pepper cucumbers feta salad. I think it was $17.00 ?!? I couldn't eat the rice because priorities people, I had to eat all the chicken hummus goodness! I also should not have ordered the baklava...I mean they said it was a large plate but I always think it's best to err on the side of baklava! Soooo baklava for breakfast! Located in the old canary building in Astoria, surprisingly very easy to find. Our server was very friendly and took great care of us. The food was not good at all. Chicken was pulled chicken, not chicken shawarma. Pita were obviously store bought. But the worst was the falafel's. They were absolutely horrible. Not even close to what a real falafel should taste like. It was like trying to eat balled up sand. I finally made it to Athena. I had to search a bunch of revues to find its location. Parking is a problem and seating can be. Athena is a food cart without wheels and that means the food is really good. I had the shwarma which is not a gyro. I never had one before. I will be having one again, soon. It was absolutely superb. The meat was done to perfection and seasoned the same. It was served with a great salad, what seemed to be house hummus and a tzatziki. Let me say again, this is shwarma not gyro. This shwarma is by a Persian woman whose mom is one helluva cook. ;o) So, I am going back. I'd suggest that anyone who likes a good meal try it. It is well worth the effort. read more

This little Mediterranean cafe is such an amazing addition to the food scene in Astoria! The food is fresh, healthy, and flavorful. The pita for the gyros is house made as are the sauces. It has everything you could want to try! There is a walk up, cafe-style counter for you to order from, so don't expect a full sit down experience- but that means faster service! Athena is located at Pier 39, so there are lots of options to sit by the water or in the very cute little atrium that the owners have decorated to give a Grecian vibe. They've only been open a month so far and we've eaten there at least 3 times! Try the Persian Love Cake! read more

Was excited for this restaurant but it was a disappointment. Food was not flavorful and for the price I would have expected a lot more. My wife left almost all of her food it was not even warm. So the food is pretty good. The service is friendly and it's a nice little places tucked away. But that's about it. It's extremely over priced Greek street food. 16 dollars for a traditional gyro. No side. Not much meat on it and gyros at Greek places are known for overflowing the meat. It's all counter service. So you go up and order. You pick up your food. You throw away your trash but of course they ask for a tip. So we pay the wages instead of the overpriced food ? Mind you I'm an excellent tipper. But that's for table side service. I shouldn't have to tip everything I buy. The wages should not fall on the consumer. If you want me to leave a dollar or two, sure. But 15 -20 percent for a 40$ meal that should be 20 bucks and I have to do all the work? Should I cook the food next ? It's not a dig. But too much is falling on the consumer. It takes the fun and joy out of eating out when it's already over priced and pressured to tip everyone doing their job. Pretty sure they don't make waitress wages either. Just another over priced, place that gives you less. But yes it tastes good. Restaurants need to make a trip to New York City or San Francisco to see what a real food scene is like. read more

The food was amazing. The service was exceptional as well. I had the lamb/beef gyro platter. So did my wife. The portions were huge. The tzatziki was clearly homemade, as was the green sauce. If they had sold the green sauce in bottles, I would certainly have bought a bottle. We will definitely be back. read more
